Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

1.) Kobe Bryant
2.) Dwane Wade
3.) Joe Johnson
4.) Manu Ginobili
5.) Ray Allen

Honorable Mention: Vince Carter, Andre Iguodala, Kevin Martin, Ben Gordon, Richard Hamilton

Strange. It feels like someone was left out.

UPDATE: After receiving an ungodly amount of angry comments, Joel Brigham has issued a retraction. Disaster averted.

"(Author's Note: Brandon Roy was originally left off this list because I was, for some reason, viewing him as a point guard. Were I doing this over, he'd absolutely be ranked #3, followed by Johnson and Ginobili, which would push Ray Allen to the top of the Honorable Mention category)."

Heh heh. This is high comedy.

And by “high” I don’t mean possessing superior intellect.

The cowards never started
The weak died along the way
Only the strong survived
They were the Trailblazers

hello

"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

Here's my favorite part.
Clearly the third-best shooting guard in the league, Johnson has done a lot for bringing the Atlanta Hawks back to credibility

Joe Johnson is “clearly” the third best shooting guard in the league? The Hawks have credibility? What?

by Nick Van Excellent on Aug 19, 2009 8:02 AM PDT reply actions

It gets to the point of comedy when you actually look at comparison statistics:

http://www.basketball-reference.com/fc/pcm_finder.cgi?request=1&sum=0&p1=roybr01&y1=2009&p2=johnsjo02&y2=2009

Of the 14 measurable advanced statistics, Roy ranks higher in 12 of them, ties with defensive win shares, and is only slightly behind Joe in assist%.

His Big 3 are Kobe, Wade and.... Joe Johnson?

Nothing against Joe Johnson, he’s got a solid game, but come on. He gives honorable mentions to Iggy, K-Mart, and Rip. It’s almost as if he just completely forgot about Roy.

Blazers get no love

on a national level. It seems all too typical, and 100% BS!

Big D from Blog-A-Bull - "Pritchard is such a genius that teams just give him players for free."

Greg Oden - The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946

by FiveOhThree-RipCity!! on Aug 19, 2009 8:09 AM PDT reply actions

That's OK

It’ll be all that much sweeter when they slap down the rest of the league. This year? Probably not. But, after that …

Duct tape makes you smart.

They may not win the chip this year

But they’re gonna cause some serious damage in league. The Blazers are ready to take off….

Roy had to have slipped his mind

I mean come on, not even honorable mention? The JJ thing is perplexing as well……

I like all of the WTF? Where is BRoy? comments below the article. And I thought Andre Iguodala was a SF?? I’m pretty sure the person who wrote this article doesn’t watch basketball.

by jenstcy on Aug 19, 2009 8:15 AM PDT reply actions

Kind of a lame retraction/excuse if you ask me.

Kobe & Wade are just as much point guards at the end of games as Roy is.

"Ain't nothin' in this world for free."

by Arby on Aug 19, 2009 8:54 AM PDT reply actions

True.

But I understand why he would think that. Wade gets a lot more exposure than Roy so people don’t confuse him for a PG anymore. If you didn’t watch a lot of Blazer games I could see how someone could make that mistake. Roy does initiate the offense an awful lot.

by Nick Van Excellent on Aug 19, 2009 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions

If he had any credibility at all he wouldn't mistake Roy for a PG.

It’s one thing to be a casual fan in Vermont and think Roy is a PG, it’s another to be writing basketball articles and think he’s a PG.

by Bskey on Aug 19, 2009 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions

There are a ton of Blazer fans who think Roy is a PG.

It’s been suggested a million times on this very site. There have been a numerous fanposts like this that argue Roy should start at the one with Rudy at the two.

I guess people only get really mad when an outsider says it.

by Nick Van Excellent on Aug 19, 2009 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions

suggesting he could play PG is different than thinking he is one.

The person who wrote the article is supposed to be a professional.

And either way, I’m not mad nor was I ever. He already admitted his mistake anyways.

by Bskey on Aug 19, 2009 8:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I know.

I wasn’t saying you were mad, but there were some overly harsh comments on there.

by Nick Van Excellent on Aug 19, 2009 9:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I feel bad for the guy, but he totally deserved it.

Sites like that cater to commenters who love to flame each other over their fanhood.

It is “mind blowing” (to quote a another fanshot) that an NBA writer would ‘forget’ Roy. Even more ridiculous that he would think Roy is a PG. Michael Jordan could bring the ball up and initiate the offense. Will I forget that, even though he could’ve played PG, he was a SG?

Some of the things those guys are saying seem like a bit too much, but the writer did something enormously dim when his job is knowing these things.

I guess my point is, you are correct, but that is the environment they let in there.

Yeah...

It seems more embarassing to say “I thought Roy was a point guard” than to say “I forgot about Roy”.

Oh well. For all of 10 minutes he spent researching and writing this, I’m sure it generated plenty of traffic.

Yeah, I don't want to be rude, but there are only thirty starting SG out there.

And he has ten on his list!

How can you not go through each team’s SG one by one. “I thought Roy was a PG.” Then who is the Blazers SG? Do you watch basketball?

Alright Blazer fans!!!! Now, everyone needs to go on and leave the comment, “BRoy is not a point guard.”

by jenstcy on Aug 19, 2009 9:07 AM PDT reply actions

Cool, our quest for a better point guard is over

Now we only need to get one of those great shooting guards on the list.

I was gonna say

why is ray allen even in the top 10 at this point? He has lost a full step and no amount of experience can fully compensate for being slower than rest. He’s a great shooter though.

As always no love for Portland

The funny thing is that we all know that BRoy should be near the top but what is funny to me is that it seems like most people are surprised that his name was not mentioned. We should be used to this by now.

from the day he was drafted

there have been a number of people that are attempting to call him point guard because he can distribute well.

If you’re talking about his function then it could be as accurate as referring to a point forward. if you’re talking about position for defense or who he’ll be up against on offense, then it’s completely inaccurate.

Someone on Bleacher Report last year categorized him as a small forward

He is too flexible for his own good in terms of reputation.

Joe Johnson is WAY OVERRATED..

He had one of the worst all star games in NBA history.
Playoff stats
Joe Johnson PPG 16.4 RPG 4.50 APG 3.5 EFF + 12.27
Brandon Roy PPG 26.7 RPG 4.80 APG 2.8 EFF + 22.67
Dwayne Wade PPG 29.1 RPG 5.00 APG 5.3 EFF + 24.71
Kobe Byant PPG 30.2 RPG 5.30 APG 5.5 EFF + 27.52

Yeah, CLEARLY Joe johnson is better than Brandon.

"ungodly amount of angry comments"

equals one light day from a laid back summer crowd at BEdge. Imagine if he had posted that original list in the middle of the season. The number of angy comments would have crashed the entire internet.
