I've liked Kahn's extreme honesty

I wonder if he is making Kahn pay for McHale’s mistakes by hating Kahn so much already.

By my count, he made a seemingly terrific trade of Foye and Miller for Rubio. The day before the draft, that would seem like a way undervalued deal for someone who could have gone 2nd in the draft and maybe become a premiere PG for years. If they can get him over some year soon and Rubio’s body develops, it is a great rad deal.

He traded Telfair and Smith and whoever for cap savings, so who cares if it’s in the form of Quentin or Blount? The cheaper the better. It’s better to have someone you don’t feel like you need to play for a team in their situation, if it isn’t someone you want to develop or keep for the long haul.

I dunno if Kahn is a great talent evaluator or whatever, but he has been honest and accurate with his honesty thus far in my book. He should have a lil’ more honeymoon still.

I agree.

Thus far Kahn has been golden.

Do the T-Wolves want to cohesive roster that can fail at making the playoffs every year, or do they want to get better?

Yeah, the Rubio deal was luck but still a chance he couldn’t pass up when he fell the in the draft. Imagine the Wizards had kept the pick: Rubio backing up Gilbert Arenas, which would be great as injury insurance. Or alternatively they could play Rubio at PG and Arenas at SG. Defensively that’s not amazing, but offensively it would be terror. Nothing against Foye and Miller, but I would like that backcourt for Washington with Young on the bench.

True

I would love to see him on the Wolves and if you can get a star for two average players, it is a no-brainer. The part I agree with the fire david kahn blog is that Rubio’s buyout is steep, which is not helping the situation and neither is his interest in playing for the Timberwolves.

If you read his quotes, he always states that he’s excited to play in the NBA and never mentions the Wolves. I think that is where fire david kahn is ripping Kahn. He didn’t investigate the situation, so he wasn’t aware of the buyout and Rubio’s lack of interest.

BTW: We’re still kicking ourselves for the Roy for Foye.

Don’t feel too bad about Roy for Foye… we traded Chris Paul for Martell Webster and Jarrett Jack.

…and Joel Freeland. And converted Jack and change into Bayless. We win! Yeah, right…

I don't know how ANYONE couldn't be aware of the buyout

It’s all we read about leading up to the draft, regarding Rubio. Ya simply had to draft him there no matter what though, since his value and possible talent level is too high. He still has lots of value in a trade right now, but I think he can be persuaded to come to Minny.

Rubio wants to be a NBA player, he entered the draft early at the risk of ending up on a less than ideal team, and he has to stick with it. Does he hold out hope he can go somewhere else? Perhaps. But Kahn and Friends have time to convince Rubio and Rubio’s handlers that Minnesota will be a great place for him to make his career.

Rubio might be a bust, but right now he has as much potential to be great as anyone in that draft. The buyout was always going to be steep no matter where he was drafted, even if he went #1. It was a crazy dumb contract Rubio was signed to. Since Minny isn’t playing for this season, and is in rebuilding and development mode, if you think you got a great player but have to wait a year or two, it is still a great draft pick.

I agree you maybe coulda got more, or something better, for Telfair and The Rhino, but if management just didn’t think they were part of the future and just wanted to save money, I can’t blame them. Figuring out who you wanna keep from here on out, developing who you like, and scouting for next year’s draft whilst not losing too much money is all you can ask your team to do right now. If they already decided they didn’t want someone, I think it’s okay to just send them off for savings.

Especially since Telfair and The Rhino’s value weren’t too high… though I do think you could have gotten a 2nd round pick at LEAST for the Rhino.

If Rubio doesn’t ever allow himself to come play for Minnesota, than I hope Kahn and Friends realize it early enough in the game where it doesn’t leak out to everyone who is in the know. Because, Rubio still has a lot of value right now, and right now with your franchise at a crossroads it is more than worth the gamble.

In my opinion.

the anti-Kahn sentiment is early, to be sure… but the blog is still humorous to read. It helps remind me that we’ve come a long way from the hate-Patterson era.

That draft was a catastrophe for Minnesota.

Why come?

If Rubio becomes a star (he’s got potential for it) it’s a great draft obviously, and he can be traded for a very nice piece as well. I can’t think of who else they should have drafted… right now, it appears like a very weak draft. Of course, I’m sure there’ll be some surprise players who we didn’t see coming that’ll make the draft seem deeper than it did on draft night, but right now I dunno who else you take with those picks.

For value’s sake, anyways. BPA, and make a move later. Even though both are PGs, I can’t think of anyone else who was good enough to be the better choice, clearly.

Waaaaaay too soon to say it is a catastrophe. 2006 was a horrible draft for them. 2009 might turn out real nice with either player becoming something special or bringing something special back in a trade.

If they had targeted Flynn the whole time, and just took Rubio because he fell, I can’t blame them— ya gotta get whoever has the most talent and value. When you’re rebuilding from scratch especially.

Agree

I like the way you look at the moves. If Rubio becomes great, it is a great deal, but that is a big if. He may not even play for the Wolves which is another big if. If the Wolves have to trade Rubio, they may not get a lot of compensation. I read on this site that the Rockets offered Shane Battier and Aaron Brooks. Wouldn’t that be about the same as keeping Mike Miller and Randy Foye?

The problem is, he isn’t saving a lot of money by trading Telfair or dumping Richardson. I also like his honesty and as a Wolves fan, I’d love to see these moves payoff. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens, but if they get nothing in return for Rubio and if they are unable to sign free agents next year, wouldn’t all these moves be viewed as failures.

by kevin love handles on Aug 19, 2009 8:01 AM PDT reply actions

Are you saying Rubio for Battier & Brooks?

and are you saying Battier & Brooks = Mike Miller & Randy Foye?

I’m going Battier & Brooks >Rubio >= Mike Miller & Randy Foye. I’m not sure why. Battier is the top name in that five-some. I liked Brooks against us. Miller seems like a quality offensive guy, but he is from SoDak and that cannot be washed off. Randy Foye – is he better than Corey Brewer? Rubio gives me the same feeling I had about Jason Williams when he was in Sacramento.

Battier

I was saying that the Rockets offered Battier and Brooks for Rubio. Then I said Battier and Brooks are comparable to Miller and Foye. One could argue for either combo in terms of who is better, but the point I was making is that all four are mediocre NBA players and if that is the deal Kahn is swinging than why did he do all this huffing and puffing for Rubio when he could have saved himself the trouble and just kept Foye and Miller.

By the way, Flip Saunders compaired Rubio to Jason Williams.
