Greg Oden in Terre Haute ...
As many of you may or may not know, Greg went to elementary and middle school in Terre Haute, Ind. I have linked a story from last year to explain why Oden comes back for this event every year. No matter where Greg stands in his progress, this also serves as a reminder to how lucky Portland was to land him on a character level. I was already a fan of Portland's direction before they selected him, but drafting Greg signed the deal for me. I know we are all proud at how the team makes these headlines as compared to ones from previous years. If a story gets posted about his involvement in the event from this week, I will update it with a link.

Greg
I love Greg and think he’s an asset to the team and the city. I’m proud to be a fan.
That said, he showed up, played some golf, and signed some basketballs. During his vacation. I know people who bust their rump at work, then do hours of unpaid, unpleasant volunteer work with sometimes unpleasant, unthankful people. That’s charity.

Caught my eye
and warmed my heart… this would be a real game changer:
“Jimmy Smith said he saw Oden repeatedly drain eight and 10 shots in a row from the 18-foot range during an informal shooting session in Portland about a month ago.”
I think Greg can be great without this, but it is fantastic as another weapon for him. Greg can do a pick ’n pop?
Andre will know how to make it work.
I’m already stoked about Oden but this would be a real nice bonus to keep the opposing bigs honest on the pick ’n roll with Miller.
Greg Oden is the Blazersedge!
That article was 12 months old
and Oden needs to attack the basket and leave the jumpers to LMA and the wings
When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
I didn't realize Greg was from Terre Haute...
I was there spinning microfilm for a day a couple years back…
That’s Gene Debs’ hometown. He ran for President on the Socialist Party ticket in 1900, 1904, 1908. 1912, and 1920 (the last time when he was in federal prison in Atlanta for speaking out in public against World War I).

Socialist?
What this guy has to do with Oden is absolutely zero. All of us have geographical links to someone who made headlines at one time or another – freaks or otherwise.
The fact that it’s posted here, at such a time as this when our President is trying to socialize medicine, is revealing something about your politics, however. Do you really think stealing from others to satisfy your own moral pursuits is cool? That’s socialism.

of other people’s money.”

Don't Bring Up Politics Here
- - This site is about Basketball. I can get my politcal news elsewhere.
- - No matter how smart you are, whatever you have to say politically will get at least 50% of the people who read your stuff to think you’re an idiot.
- - Based on what you wrote, I think you’re an idiot.

so did the rest of the players
except for Joel and maybe Blake
and of course the Euros didn’t participate
(But I agree, this is “junk drawer” material)

Well, he was born in Buffalo but moved to Terre Haute in 4th grade, I believe. He went to Fuqua Elementary and Sarah Scott Middle School. I remember working with one of his coaches who had a team picture from Greg’s 6th grade year, I believe. Greg was the “team manager/water boy.” Amazing how far he progressed in a short amount of time.
I’m sorry for the misfortune of the Terre Haute trip. =) I’m sure you made it to Debs’ house on the Indiana State campus. It’s marked as a point of interest.
Um, this article was from 2008?
Not to rain on the sentiment here, but there’s old news and then there’s year old news.
Well, whatever. It's still a nice story.

Um. I wrote that in the introduction. He was here for the same thing this year. Thus, “If a story gets posted about his involvement in the event from this week, I will update it with a link.” I posted it for those who were unaware of an annual thing Greg did. No article has been published yet this year. Hope that clears up the confusion.
In discussions about Greg Oden it's rarely mentioned
how the death of his best friend may have contributed to his seemingly depressed attitude. Everything was going so well for him until that happened. I don’t know what the timeline was but I bet it seems to Greg that the death of Travis Smith precipitated one bad thing after another and he started feeling like it was too much. They had been friends since 4th grade, I think.

Regardless I hate trying to analyze player's psyches
Today, where we feel like we personally know athletes the whole psychosomatic analysis we preform feels almost like an arrogant extension of this mentality. I just feel like without actually knowing someone it’s hard to know what is really weighing down on an individual. Sometimes it’s hard to doing that with the people we know.

Of course. But I hardly think what ailed Greg was psychosomatic.
Yes, his friend died in January of Greg’s freshman year in college, less than 6 months before he was drafted. That’s about two and a half years ago. I don’t actually feel I personally know any of these guys but by extension I can guess how it might affect Greg. I read somewhere that Travis Smith was on his way to Columbus at the last minute to see one of Greg’s games and they didn’t tell Greg til after the game was over that his friend was dead.

Went to Indiana
Still pissed as hell at Mike Davis that he couldn’t get Greg Oden to come to Indiana, which would also have brought Mike Conley = National Championship
but, I am just ecstatic that he did not turn out to be a Z-bo type guy :)
Man, with this outfield, need to get rid of that Rasmus, no Ankiel, wait no, Rasmus wait...uhhhh
