Sick & tired of hearing about Sam-freekin-Bowie?
"Portland drafted Sam Bowie instead of Michael Jordan, Ha Ha, what a bunch of dumb*****"
For all of you that blame the franchise for making that pick in 84', do your reaserch becuase I'd make the same pick at the time of of the draft again!
*Magic/Kareem, Bird/McHale, Kobe/Shaq, Wade/Shaq. The gaurd/Big man have proven that they bring home the gold when all said and done, right?
*The 83' draft we selected a player, one of the 50 greatest, by the name of Clyde Drexler. His playing position was at shooting gaurd. The same as M. Jordan's, right?
*The picking order in the next year was Houston @1, Portland @ 2 and Chicago @ 3. The two best projected big man prospects were Alajuwon and Bowie in the draft. We all know who Houston took and if they didnt we would have taken their pick. Anyways, that left us with are only option at the time, Sam Bowie. This is unless we thought Kevin Willis would take us to the promise land(LMAO) right?
*Please tell me if you really predicted that Michael Jordan was about to become the greatest athlete of all time! Of course the organization would had drafted him had they known that and shipped Drex straight to Houston that same year instead of 12 years later.
*In closing, looking back now, it was a huge mistake. The people that haven't looked into why we drafted the next best center available and are quik to critisize Portland. Please tell them what I just explained. Tell them that Houston could have made the same mistake and we would have two if not more, banners with a Drexler/Alajuwon combo. We were just unfortunate to get the 2nd pick in the 1984 draft!
Oh and by the way, not to add more pressure on Mr. Oden but if he doesnt give us and the nation what everyone thought he would, then that 84' draft looks even worse to everyone around us!
SO GREG, GROW A PAIR AND STEP IT UP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like Sam Bowie. Don’t stop talking about him!

Well. I like Sam too, but I understand (sorta) the poster's point.
It’s like the Red Sox and Bill Buckner. They used to be uttered in the same breath, now it’s no more than an afterthought since their Championship cleanse (well, it took the second one to really wash it away)
I suspect the same will be true of the Blazers once they win it all again. A painful memory turned into nothing more than a picture in the tapestry.
The best part is: when it does happen, when the Blazers win it all again, and we’re all dancing deleriously in the streets, the adversity we’ve all experienced will just make it sweeter.
It’s too bad thew poster added the “Greg grow a pair” thing, I think we all know where that particular discussion leads on the BEdge.

Re grownin' a pair.
I’d like to see droyden and everyone else who so fearlessly toss-out statements like that about a player to say it to the player’s face. Everyone is so brave on the keyboard.
We have a pear tree in the backyard.
Is Oden hungry? I don’t understand.
The cowards never started
The weak died along the way
Only the strong survived
They were the Trailblazers
At the Denver game I had pretty great seats.
And the guys in front of us kept heckling Nene. At one point they stopped play and Nene came over to the sidelines. It was kind of a shocking break of the 4th wall when all of a sudden this giant of a man is towering over all of us, and just glaring down.

Here's what I've long concluded:
1. The Blazers had been getting killed by dominant bigs since Bill Walton went down.
2. If drafting Jordan automatically meant getting six titles (though I’m afraid it’s more complicated than that!), didn’t the Rockets blow a shot at four more?
3. The Blazers were already two deep (and I mean deep) at both guard positions, esp. at the two, with one multiple all-star (Jim Paxson) and a highly gifted second-year guy (the Glide).
4. This is the one that NOBODY (outside of this state) mentions. The Blazers only had the #2 pick because of the Tom Owens trade (the pick originally belonged to the Pacers). In essence, the Pacers blew a shot at landing their future nemesis Michael Jordan because they took a shot at an aging, journeyman (albeit underrated) center. But then, it’s easier just to mock the Blazers rather than do some simple research.

I'm actually more upset at not drafting CP-3 than MJ.
When we failed to draft MJ, it was because we already had Clyde.
When we failed to draft CP-3, it was because we already had… Sebastian Telfair.

true dat.
CP3 might just become the greatest pg in NBA history, and Telfair….won’t. I hope Martell absolutely explodes this year.

THis is the frame of mind that makes me think less of Webster.
We all want him to succeed so the Blazers don’t look so bad. Forget it, he’s a sunk cost and we can’t really look any worse. Right now our best SF is Roy, then Batum, then the two guys who’ve failed to prove themselves starter material for awhile. I like them, but I don’t have any wild fantasies of them having ceiling’s higher than role-players.

Ugh
CP3, yes i know…..i feel the same way…….when we traded out of the spot we had i was like “wtf” I knew, you knew, KP knew we needed one of those elite PGs. UGH!!!!!

"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

In 1986 the Celtics selected Len Bias and the Warriors selected Chris Washburn on #2 and #3
In retrospect, man did they screw that up. One dies two days later on an overdose, and the other one tries to. Of course they wouldn’t do those picks again, with players like Chuck Person and Ron Harper on the board – and much later players like Arvydas Sabonis and Dennis Rodman and Jeff Hornacek and Mark Price and Nate McMillan and Drazen Petrovic.
Of course they would do it differently in retrospect had they known what happened. Like the Blazers if they had known Bowie would suffer from foot injuries all his career.

Why do you feel a need to explain this to US?
It happened a quarter century ago. At this point we’re all probably much more annoyed by comments like: “Greg needs to grow a pair”.
But at least you spelled his name right.
Old story -
Legend has it that Bobby Knight tried to convince Stu Inman to draft Jordan instead of Bowie. When Inman repeatedly told him “But we need a center”, Knight reportedly replied, “So play him at center”.

I'm so confused...
I agree about the Sam Bowie thing… but what does Greg growing a pair have to do with it?
I think most rational fans that are old enough to actually remember the situation understand that at that time, with the roster the Blazers had, Bowie was the logical choice.
L*ker fans and Oden haters on O-live like to say the “Oden=Bowie” stuff (although they invariably spell it wrong) or “Oden is the next Bowie”. The really annoying ones then go on to throw the Durant comparison in there too like he’s the MJ in the situation.
Generally speaking that fluff is thrown out there by people who are looking for confrontation. Either way we can’t change the picks that were or weren’t made in the past. I am just glad to have the guys we have right now…
GO BLAZERS!!! (is it October yet?)
if youre going to have this kind of discussion then...
drexler = roy. Two underrated draft picks turn into two of the best players in the league. Both are completely team-oriented as well, Durant was NOT and is not. Jordan may have been the best player just about ever, certainly the best of his era, but a close second is more than enough to win championships. D wade may not have been better than Kobe (and I would argue he still isn’t) but he won with Shaq. Pippen and other help was what turned Jordan into a champion, including Rodman…
let me explain....
“Grow a pair”?
Trust me, I believe in Greg and his ability to become the double double guy that we need down low.
I should have closed my post with “GREG, PROVE THE FRUSTERATED ONES WRONG”
I hope this offseason has given Greg a chance to relax and get away from all the people like me that were frusterated with the look on his face EVERY game last year. Unmotivated, no rythym and no excitment written in everything he did last year.
Last season is over with and yes, he did show at times what he is capable of doing, so now its time for him to have a clear mind, have fun and join this team and the chemistry that they have built!
