Who will be most improved?

We have seen some amazing off season improvement in the past.  I am thinking specifically about Joel two years ago.  He came back in great shape and hitting his free throws.  Blake's off season improvement has always been very good.  I watched Nic a few days ago running the french team in the forth quarter and I was astounded.  On the other hand, Travis seems to enjoy his off season a bit too much.    Who do you think will come to camp most improved?

Hopefully Oden.

Most likely it will be Batumn though.

If healthy...

Then Oden without a doubt should show the most improvement. That’s a big if, but if he doesn’t get hurt then all that raw talent should really grow this year. The surgery is now long recovered, he’s in better shape, and has all those lessons learned in the first year over with, not to mention mentally he should have matured some, which will help a lot.

I think Rudy will be used more this year and with Webster back in the line up, I don’t think Batum will get the minutes to be most improved on our team.

by Coastie07 on Aug 11, 2009 1:45 PM PDT reply actions

Batum will TAKE minutes.

I’m that convinced of his ascendancy.

I see a deadline trade of either Outlaw or Webster (depending on the latter’s health).

You bet. I'll bet. Can you say, "caricature"?

by Calzone on Aug 11, 2009 1:55 PM PDT up reply actions

If Webster is healthy and productive

he almost certainly won’t be traded. If he isn’t, he certainly won’t be traded.

Webster’s health more likely impacts whether Travis is traded or let go at the end of the season. Martell will be a Blazer for all of this season, almost certainly. If productive, he’ll either start or be the perfect backup for Nic. If not productive, no one would take him in a trade.

Martel is the key

to a successful (conference championship) season. I’m assuming Oden will stay in most games and be a powerful defensive force and rebounder. But it is Martel who can easily average 15-20 points per night playing off BROY and Miller who will provide the scoring bursts which will separate us from other teams on multiple nights. He was about to have his best season at the beginning of last year; foot willing, he will help take the Blazers to the top this year.

Oden

He will be one of the best centers in the western conference by the end of the year.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

Rec. Greg will be most improved. It won’t even be close, IMO.

Oden

He seems to be making the right steps mentally and physically. Maybe the improvement won’t be as big as taking a scoring load off Roy and Aldridge, but I’m willing to say that he’ll take Przybilla’s role and then some.

Hopefully Oden.

I have a hard time saying Batum for two reasons: First, most of us have a very high expectation with Batum (not that we don’t with Oden) and it almost seems like a guarantee that he’ll get significantly better in the coming years. Second, and more importantly, Oden, if healthy and out of foul trouble, will have an easier time getting minutes than Batum. With M-Web back, the bottleneck at the 3 will be in full effect.

Rudy and Batum will make significant improvements as well. LMA may surprise us as well with Andre distributing the rock.

thats ballsy, but worth some more play.

If LMA comes out with Dynamite in his Nikes, he could make the All Star team. Between that, and being the second leading scorer on a 60+ win team, he might get some national most improved nods.

I heart taxes.

by everett on Aug 11, 2009 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I got to say Oden...

If he stays in the game, his contribution to the team’s success should be greater than Batum’s (who I’d rank 2nd). It is pretty clear that both players have improved after watching some of the Team USA footage as well as the Euro tourney. However, I don’t see Batum getting a lot more playing time with Webster being back unless a trade is made, injury, or Webster just stinking it up (not likely).

Rudy could be a close 3rd depending on his playing time as well. I think Miller will get him the ball in transition more but overall, I don’t see him ‘improving’ his all-around game. I just don’t think he gets the playing time or freedom with Portland that we saw out of him in the Olympics.

Roy.

He’ll go from being a high level all-star to being a super-star. That’s a big jump.

by tcwoods on Aug 11, 2009 4:25 PM PDT reply actions

ODEN! ODEN! ODEN!

I think the off season and his time with team USA will help his petty fouls that get him in so much trouble. He can only get better at this point. He showed flashes of greatness that I am confident he will show more often this year – especially with Andre at the healm and Roy’s comments about pushing him this year.

The Blazer’s achille’s heal has always been center. He is our one chance to have a dominant offensive threat in the post. You gotta have faith!

by hedgerocket on Aug 11, 2009 4:32 PM PDT reply actions

Always our achilles heel?

I mean, in recent years that’s fair, but Sabonis and Walton have some rebuttals to make.

by austinpwnz on Aug 11, 2009 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Sabonis.... if we had him when we drafted him in, what, '88?

Sabonis in for Duckworth – we would have at least two titles. Too little, too late. And Walton? Well, I was just being born.

Outlaw

He always works hard in the off-season and this year is no exception…

Honestly tho, I vote for Outlaw. He is going to get regular minutes of the bench and is going to maximize the time he gets. I predict Travis is going to show definite improvement in rebounding and perimeter D— he two biggest weaknesses. Travis should know the PTB won’t be happy with bringing just his ability to get off a shot and Cliff Robinson like 3 point spotting.

Isn’t Travis in his final year? I may be wrong. But if so, he cannot afford to plateau this season. Book it.

by austinpwnz on Aug 11, 2009 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions

You may be right

and if Travis improves in rebounding and D, he could be very, very valuable to us.

His passing was somewhat better last year. The year before, the 3 point shot. He seems to improve one or two areas (and only one or two) each year. Someday, he’ll plateau. It may be now, but it sure would be nice if it isn’t.

When I rule the world, everyone will know how to use Excel.

by jscot on Aug 12, 2009 7:37 AM PDT up reply actions

The Team!

It is apparent from the above posts that we have up to eight players to choose from. Here is my most improved list in descending order: Oden, Aldridge, Batum, Roy, Rudy, Bayless, Webster, Outlaw.

The two players I expect to break even on are Joel and Steve. The three players, who are new, and should be expected to help us a lot are: Miller, Cunningham (coach said last night on courtside that DC is improving in leaps and bounds since summer league), and Pendergraph.

I don’t think I am being overly optimistic to say that there should be substantial improvement over last year from a TEAM perspective. Many of these players are on the steep upward incline portions of their growth curves.

Even Andre seemed to have a good year last year; if he holds about even this next year, it will help us a lot. Comparing the four players we gained (I’m including Webster here) to the two rotation players we lost (Fry and Rodriguez) we again have a substantial gain.

Its hard not to be excited about this upcoming season. WE SHOULD BE BETTER!

There is more to an athlete than how fast they can run, they also better be able to see what they are doing and know why they are doing it.

Oden, then Rudy, then Bayless

Odens development is also THE MOST critical thing that needs to happen. If he fulfills his potential, then you have a chance at the ring.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say LaMarcus

Kinda wonder if he’s got a chip on his shoulder since he’s kinda been pushed to the background. Also I think Miller is going to help him a ton. I really really want LaMarcus to become an AllStar.

Batum is key to the Blazers Success

I believe Batum will be huge this season and most improved for sure. He has a sense of urgency like no other on the team, he is our best defender and when he is left open he can shoot 3’s. Playing over the summer in France and being a key for offense will help him be the most improved for 2009/2010.
