Nice Breakdown on Hoopsworld regarding Roy and Aldridge's Contract Extension Situation
Here's a sample:
"The first, and perhaps most important, point is that the contract extensions for Roy and Aldridge should get done this summer, but there is zero need to get them done NOW. "
"The second point is that while it may be true Portland would prefer a four-year deal to a five-year deal, it doesn't make any logical sense from the team's point of view. Signing a shorter term contract is to the player's advantage, not the teams."

“Signing a shorter term contract is to the player’s advantage, not the teams.”
Does this fact change at all if the salary cap is expected to decline in the next few years? If max salary is based on percentage of cap, then if the cap is expected to be down in four years, wouldn’t it be to the teams advantage to sign to a four year deal, and the next negotiation would be less than what the structure could be if it had been a five year deal?
That's a lot to assume
that the cap will be less in 4 or 5 years than it is now. Sure it could, but wouldn’t you think by that time the cap will have increased? Possibly higher than it is even now?
The only thing I could think of is KP is thinking ahead to the next contract. Roy will be 25 in a couple of weeks. If he signs this contract for 4 years, then he will be 30 for the next contract (the remaining year of his rookie contract, plus the 4 year extension). At that point BRoy will still be in his prime and Portland will probably have to offer him another big contract. It’s easier to offer a big contract to a 30 year old versus a 31 year old. I may be way off base…but that is all I can think of.
Quick might be working with KP...
I think Quick’s article painted an overly dramatic view of how poorly KP is supposedly doing, even for Quick.
My guess is that KP asked quick to write this article, or perhaps fed him material to get him to write this article. Regardless of whether Quick was involved or not, my theory is that KP wants Utah to think he’s desperate and ready to throw everything he has at making this supposed “Toxic” offer that Utah can’t match. KP is probably using it as leverage to get Utah’s attention.
To set up the heir of desperation, KP probably leaked the notion that negotiations with Roy and LA weren’t going well. What better way to ensure that Quick’s story got major coverage?
I mean seriously, if the Blazers are having such a horrible time acquiring new talent, why haggle with your existing talent and risk losing them? Were I run the team, if all of the free agent and trade options fell apart on me, the last thing I would want to do, would be to risk losing my two star players by nickel & diming them.
I don’t know whether Quick was a participant or a patsy, but his article looks like further proof that KP is a master illusionist. If you will recall, he got Roy and Bayless by playing similar games.
KP was trying to set up Paris Hilton?
That’s who comes to mind when I read “heir of desperation”.
