Top 10 Worst Sports Logos - Blazers #2 - Do You Agree?

Lets take a break in complaining about the new BE logo and talk about the teams logo.  A top 10 list from Askmen.com puts the Portland Trailblazers Logo as the second worst of all sports franchises.  I for one do not agree with the list and like the Blazers logo along with a few others on the list.

What are your thoughts, do you like the logo or feel that the it is stuck in the past and needs to be updates?

Could not disagree more

what about the pacer’s logo? or the warriors thing, whatever that is? how about the lakers? basically any logo that features the first letter of your team’s name sucks.

I agree.

At least the pinwheel is creative. I would rather have a single logo then my team’s nickname inside a basketball.

The specific logo they put

with the box around it isn’t great at all, I’ll agree to that.

But the pinwheel itself (especially the old school one that wasn’t tilted)? I like it. Always have. I don’t see how it’s that bad, really, compared to some of the monstrosities out there.

I Can't Argue

Let’s face it, the Trailblazers’ logo is not that great. It’s an abstract concept that most people don’t get at first glance. The concept is not even to begin with and it has nothing to do with the name itself.

Granted, trailblazers are hard to conceptualize with a graphic but they can do better than the current logo.

The modern tinkerings could use some work. I find it strange because they have a great marketing department and have the money for a top notch agency. The reworkings really need some reworking though…….I’d love to take a bite of that.

Sandstrom Design did the recent rework, and I think it’s great. They kept everything that made it classic, and refined it in a very subtle way.

While we're on the topic

Let’s all hate on our favorite logo to hate on.
(I apologize for posting the logo. I couldn’t find one censored, so I tried to get the smallest one I could find.)

First of all, Lakes aren’t Purple or gold… They’re blue and Green. And a lake, how is that any more intimidating than a Grizzlie, Hurricane, or a Raptor. Looks to be motion in their letters too. I’d rather come across a lake than a frowning Grizzlie Bear, I can swim.

by actwentysix on Jul 8, 2009 10:25 AM PDT reply actions

A laker isnt a lake

its a person that is on a ship on a lake and transports stuff, but that just makes it even less intimidating since people probably die more often from drowning in a lake than at the hands of a laker. But i was definately expecting this to be in their top 5. maybe their biggest membership is in la and they didnt wanna ruin their sales?

Not to argue but...

Based on the linked article from the OP, their criteria is…
#10. Is it a sedate logo that simply reads “Team Name” – Yes
#9. Does it have nothing to do with the team name – Yes
#8. Is the logo too busy – No
#7. Is the logo a letter with pretty trailing lines – Their Alt logo is, so Yes
#6. If you turn it on it’s side, does it look like a ghost – No
#5. Was it a past fad that has no revelence today – Came from Minneapolis, so Yes
#4. Do they represent something intangable and not at all threatening – Not threatening at least
#3. Is it expressionless, representing not much fight in the team – Not really
#2. Not sure what the team name means and slant represents motion – Yes
#1. Do you have to put a jersey on backwards when you go down under – Yes

Isn’t that the point of a logo. Brand recognition. There is a lot of logos out there that don’t really make sense but everyone knows exactly what they represent.

by Balian on Jul 8, 2009 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Errr....disagree.

You make brand equity sound bad. Most companies would DIE to have substantial brand equity.

The NBC Peacock has great brand equity. Is it a lousy logo because it harkens back to the days when TV changed from black and white to color? How about the curving arrow or smile (depending on your point of view) in the Amazon logo?

Logos work when they are instantly recognizable. They, in and of themselves, carry no inherrent meaning. It is the brand experience that creates the meaning which is then transferred to the logo.

The Blazer logo is instantly recognizable…and carries with it the meaning that is brought by each of our collective experiences with the entire Blazer brand.

Who say brand equity is bad? I was simply stating the difference between brand equity and a well designed logos. There is a difference. Brand equity is very important. That’s is why company like Cocoa Cola don’t redesign their logo every year.

The curving arrow in Amazon is a clever concept ….its goes from A to Z which works with the name of the company and what it does …Amazon is big and sells anything from A to Z.

by Balian on Jul 8, 2009 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

There is a difference for BRAND NEW logos...

that have no brand equity. But the brand equity in a logo is substantially more important that whether it is a good design or not.

I take it from your responses that you are a designer. ;-)

Actually...

I’ve always felt that the logo best represented the historical representation of the name Trailblazers which is a reference to pioneers and explorers that converged in the Northwest during America’s early history. If you look at the pinwheel it represents the many paths taken to reach this important place.

If you let them make you, they'll make you into paper mache.

That said, I don’t disagree. kind of a silly name, but at least it’s unique and not generic. Same as our logo. I think the biggest thing our logo has going for it is that is unique, and it’s not faddish, like many logos with cartoonized mascots or flavor of the month fonts are.

Yeah we should pick something fierce, like a Raptor.

And then make the logo be a big ugly cartoon wearing tennis shoes. That totally works.

yeah, I remember last summer being thouroughly underwhelmed

I mean really, it’s 2008 (then), and you have carte blanche freedom to create an entirely new name, logo, and color scheme from scratch for a major sports franchise. And you come up with “Thunder” in generic lettering, the overused shiled emblem, and the God-aswful orange and powder blue color scheme? Really?

How did you guys win that?

It's a generic logo that could have been used with all registered trademarks

I also see a jumping buffalo/bison, energy, marshall, and wind there :)

Now maybe I'm just being biased,

but I think the pinwheel is the best logo in sports. It has a deeper meaning then just an initial, or a cheap play on words. Tilted or upright, it has more style then any other. I love the pinwheel, and get nervous whenever I hear talk of changeing it….

The Portland Trail Blazers logo is neither good nor bad, but average. Average, however, is exactly what ...

is desired out of a logo, because it’s neither an eyesore nor a distraction. Anyway, here’s the worst logo in the NBA today.

Also, the best logo in the NBA today belongs to the Denver Nuggets.

The team name is clearly represented in bold letters, while the Rocky Mountain skyline beautifully symbolizes its location and gives fans of that region a sense of relationship with the franchise.

Heck, that amazing logo is certainly a far cry from the Nuggets craptastic logo featuring a goofy looking miner from the Larry Brown led ABA squad in the mid- ’70s.

Yeah, that looks like Brian Scalabrine with a beard.

Disagree...

Now that the 76ers have gone back to the old logo, I think they have the second best logo in the NBA (the blazers is the best in my book).

It encompasses everything that the 76ers name is supposed to be by the red, white, and blue colors and the 13 stars of the colonies that became states in 1976 after the signing of the declaration of independence.

But it is also the logo I grew up with.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

From a design perspective

The logo works very well. It’s creative, recognizable, and unique. About half of NBA team logos are a combination of the same clichés: a basketball, typography, and possibly a figure or face of the team name. The Blazers logo is actually an abstract design that represents the sport in a completely unique way. The author of this article completely ignores what a logo is intended to do, which is to be recognizable. Some of the logos on this list are definitely ugly and I’ve never been a fan of the particular Blazers logo inside the box, but to put the Blazers at number two shows a serious lack of forethought.

Love the Blazers logo.

I’m proud we’ve never changed it, just like none of the true big teams haven’t in my lifetime.

It is unique and fits our part of the country.

It wouldn’t be scary except that in the Blazers logo we see the colors of hell? Why?

Anyway, Blazers logo is the best.

Any team logo that has the ball you would use in the sport in the logo is dumb.

Examples – L*kers, OKC, Mavs, Knicks, Nets, Cavs, Pistons, Pacers, Clippers…takes a breathe…Heat, Magic, Suns, Wizards, Warriors….. and don’t even get me started on baseball teams that seem to think that this is an awesome idea as well.

That’s just lazy and unoriginal and it makes the logos look generic. Maybe some teams and their fans don’t seem to care that 30 other teams have the same basic logo only with different colors but I think it sucks.

AND any logo that has the mascot doing anything is horrible. Examples – Miami Dolphins (a dolphin in a football helmet? Come on!) Raptors (a dinosaur bouncing a basketball?), Hornets (an bug eyed insect with a basketball), Celtics (a leprechaun bouncing a basketball?)

I mean I understand trying to draw in moms and kids and families but that’s a frickin cartoon on the uniform, save the cartoons for Saturday morning.

The pinwheel logo is original and it is simple. Can’t go wrong with that.

Love The Blazer Swirl!

I don’t need to analize or debate this very much at all. I’ve always liked The Blazers swirl. I think it looks good. I like that our symbol isn’t a cartoon animal.

The “alternate” Blazer symbol you still see from time to time, I hate ( that flaming thing). Please Blazers don’t mess with the swirl. You tweaked it a few years back, and that was fine. Any thoughts of abandoning the swirl for some other image….please forget them.
