Question. Is It Possible to Use Our Cap Space to...
Give another team cap relief, say by taking a soon to expire contract (soon meaning next two years) of a less desirable player with a too big contract, along with as many first round picks, cash, goodies etc that his team will give us to take him away and give them our cap room? We could sign and trade Frye or Ruffin if need be. I'm no expert on this that's why I posted in the form of a question.
The idea is to forget free agents, and get some high future draft picks. I don't have much interest in overpaying old players with our cap space, when we have a very good team now, but it would be a great asset to be able to reload with good draft picks as we lose some of our talent to free agency over the years, and we could end up back below the cap if we replace departing players with rookies. As long as we have vets like Roy and LA, we can roll with a few rookies as we did last year. Those picks will also have trade value for us if we want. They would be like savings bonds, holding our cap value for the future, when we actually need it. If it works out, we could be a lottery team with a winning record. That would be a real "pritchslap" to the NBA. I'd love to hear ideas of how this could work, if it's even technically possible.

Sure
For example, if Portland has $9.8 million in cap room, they can trade a draft pick to Washington for Mike Miller. Washington would save a lot of money, both in terms of the salary they’d have to pay Miller this year and the money they save by going below the tax threshold. Realistically, this trade could save Washington $19 million in cash. So, yes, Portland might also be able to get a future draft pick out of the Wizards, too. Similar to how Seattle a couple of years ago traded a 2nd round pick to the Suns for Kurt Thomas and two 1st round picks so that Phoenix could save money.
They used a trade exception to acquire Thomas
They were over the cap at the time.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....
But the concept is the same
Whether Portland takes back the player using cap room or a trade exception, taking him back offers significant financial savings for the other team. The price of giving that team that much financial savings is a draft pick or two.
Yeah I know
I was just pointing that out for people who know the difference. I know you already knew that.

Not sure if it would work I would like to trade Darius Miles 9 million dollers contract to a team who could use it to drop off next year in the big free agent pool….we could send a young player (1 to 2 Mil) to go with that and Travis Outlaw (4 mil)…..we trade for somebody with one year left on a big contract like Tracy McGrady his contract will terminate next year we then use 9 million or more to sign a free agent next year….I am probably way off…..not sure just an idea
