2009 Blazers = 2000 Bulls?
This all just feels too familiar. Think back to 2000. The Bulls go in with all kinds of cap space, make a run at Duncan only to see him re-sign with San Antonio. They make a run at Grant Hill and McGrady, only to see them sign with Orlando. They make a run at Eddie Jones, have him verbally agree to a deal, and then back out and sign with Miami. The Bulls were used repeatedly as leverage by free agents looking to increase their value and sign elsewhere. In the end, they felt like they needed to use up their cap space so they spent it on Ron Mercer and Brad Miller.
The Blazers haven't destroyed their entire organization the way that Chicago has, but they are being used in the same manner. And I have a sneaking suspicion that they will continue to be abused in this way. Take David Lee. He is restricted, meaning that if the Blazers offer everything they have, it will be just barely above what the Knicks have already offered and likely a no-brainer for them to match. Aside from being a competitive team, the Blazers don't really have anything to offer Lee--no starting spot, no supermodel girlfriend, no New York nightlife. So KP can make him a big offer outright and tie up the cap space while the Knicks take their time deciding to match, or he can get in line with a dozen other teams trying to work out sign-and-trades.
The Blazers have no real advantage in a sign-and-trade other than the fact that they don't need salaries to match up completely. And make no mistake that in a competitive sign-and-trade field, trades along the line of Steve Blake + Travis Outlaw are not likely to get you David Lee. The Knicks would probably rather let him go for nothing. They're in the LeBron James sweepstakes, and anything they do is going to be aimed at making New York a more desirable destination. I'm not sure The King is going to be drooling over the thought of playing next to Steve Blake.
So given that we have been spurned once and seem likely to be spurned again, what is to be done? I think that the top priority has to be, "do not end up with Ron Mercer". Making a reasonable offer to a guy like Ramon Sessions sounds fine with me. Paying him a large portion of your $9 million because nobody else will take it is not going to be worth it in the long run. Beyond that, it seems as though the Blazers' best remaining options involve trades with those teams that are trying to position themselves for 2010. Cap space and young players with potential are good. If nothing pans out there, trade the cap space for an expiring contract (and picks or other assets) that could be dealt at the deadline (a la Seattle for Kurt Thomas a couple years back)--this will at least allow us to extend LMA and Roy and not completely lose all flexibility. I don't know about you, but I would rather not see those two hit restricted free agency at all.
And if we get to the fall and can't find a deal that makes sense, have the courage to make no deal at all.

I worry Paul Allen is pushing for fireworks
I like Allen, but he can’t go very long without buying some shiny new toy.
I think more and better deals will become available as the economy continues to sink.

The Bulls were coming off a 17-65 season
So that makes it even harder to lure players who want a ring, which is everybody (except apparently Hedo)
Dictated, not read. The management.

What would you think about
Joel and Trout for Kirlenko and NY’s pick, then use our 4 mil in cap space to sign a backup C/PF (Mcdyse, Smith, Nasterovic)
Draft Cole Aldrich 2010

I hope your kidding
about trading martell for Peja
What's the differance of 3-6 mil? oh about 20+ more losses, and the chance to watch the only star leave by the end of the season. Suck it Hedo!
Who is that you ask, well that shell of a man with his junk tucked away I think his name is Hedo. At least he used to be.
Canzano is a joke. When you see him kick him in the BUTT for me!

I'm glad posters don't work for the Blazers !!
Why would we trade Joel for anyone ?? You don’t rip out your
heart to trade it for another finger. That will just make you a six fingered
corpse !
It's GO time !

Whoa hold on a second.
The Knicks offer their players supermodel girlfriends?! Is that even ethical?
by pxilpooshr on Jul 5, 2009 3:10 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
It is neither
And yet inevitable.

Just One Problem
I think Blake and Outaw would be VERY attractive to the Knicks. The reason? BOTH of their contracts expire after the 2009-2010 season.

Very true.
They are UFAs next year.
"SAY NO TO HEDO." Well that campaign FAILed.... Success!

Then again...
Yeah…that thought crossed my mind, too. Then I realized that David Lee would never be on their cap to begin with. Unless they really liked Trout and Blake, why would they bring them in just to pay them for a year, when the alternative is paying nobody for a year?

Baby Bulls repeat
Does anyone remember how the baby bulls where the talk of the league when they made that run to the eastern conference finals & how they made no moves in the off season. How that work out for them…not to well. Don’t look for the knock out punch with one free agent. Lets ad some ROLL PLAYERS. You know guys that know what there roll is and where they belong in the pecking order.

The similarity between us and the Baby Bulls
is we both overvalue our young talent and are reluctant to give any of it up

What does THIS have to do with anything?
Aside from being a competitive team, the Blazers don’t really have anything to offer Lee—no starting spot, no supermodel girlfriend, no New York nightlife.
This blog is getting turned out by the misogynistic trolls and it’s defaming the site in more ways than a curse word is ever able to accomplish.

I'm not sure
it’s much better to call someone a “misogynistic troll”, especially when said person is using a term like “supermodel girlfriend” to illustrate his point, not degrade women. Using a phrase like that is not the product of a bad person or troll, but simply a construct of our sexist society. There’s millions of other guys who would or have used that term, and I’m sure that plenty of them are good men.

what does a girl have to do with anything?
that is the point. and i was not calling the author a troll, rather the ongoing sexist crap that has inundated this site. From questioning Hedo’s manhood because of rumors regarding his wife to this quote about offering supermodel girlfriends… its terribly frustrating

David Lee's Girlfriend
David Lee’s girlfriend is a supermodel. She lives in New York. Staying in New York is a draw in that he would get to live in the same city as his girlfriend. Coming to Portland would not provide that benefit. I suppose I could have left out the word “supermodel”, but it is factual. Sorry if I offended. For the record, I’m totally on board with the “Hedo should listen to his wife” crowd. She’s the one who has to live there while he’s on the road…

I think the problem you are seeing
is because you are getting a “look” behind the Boys club curtain if you will. There is alot of things men will talk about with each other, that are harmless jokes, innuendo, sexual humor, etc… that when talked about between guys is taken at face value, no harm intended. In fact many of the jokes between guys would not be taken well by those same guys wifes or girlfriends if they were to hear them. I know that I find many comic’s very funny, but my wife would find those same comic’s very offensive, so I don’t watch them on TV or go to them with her, I watch them or go to them with my guy friends. It has nothing to do with myself or my guy friends wanting to hate on women, it just a simple matter of taste.
Sex can be very funny, but many women don’t find it that way, they find sexual humor degrading. Calling a man whipped by his wife, is a very very common thing amoung men, it rarely has anything to do with the actualy woman involved, it is more about giving the man some grief just for the fun of it.
The same can be said about New York being a better place to live and play because of the “supermodel” women that live there, it is a guy joking with a guy, but no man really means it unless he is in a committed relationship with a supermodel woman who is already there in New York. You will find very few men who will take a job offer in another city just because of the woman, but you will find many many men who will boast about the fact that their new city has beautiful women to their friends.
However it appears some on this site believe this is their own “boys club” and have started to bring these type of converstations to the site, where it is not appropriate for mass comsumption. For now these comments are not against the site rules, so as mods we can’t remove them, but I hope you can understand the history and reasoning behind them so as not to take offense when they pop up from time to time. Try and blow them off as guy talk, and realize that the poster who made them is not trying to be offensive to women or hate on them in anyway, he is just talkin with his friends.

David Lee is too good to be a back-up on Portland's bench
I’m tired of seeing people get excited about him coming here. The only way that makes sense is if we are trading LA.
I think the idea behind the main post is good – don’t get played, and be patient. There are worse things that could happen then stick with what we have (yes yes, the cap space is only here now . . . .)
