Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Why not Andre Miller?

With Sergio gone the already tumultuous and now less deep position of point guard seems even more wide open. Blake didn't show up in the playoffs and how much can we count on the drive and shoot first point guard play of a young Bayless? While Miller is at the age of 33 he has started every game over the last two season for Phili and scoring over 16.5 with 6.5 assists and an outstanding 4 boards from the 1 spot over that time span. He does not posses the explosive threat of a Bayless or the Three point dagger of Blake but he is extremely solid and has shot over 47% four out of his last six seasons. While common sense would tell us he is on the decline, he just seems to keep steadying the ship and improving. Even if he does have a drop off next year I don't think any Blazer front office personnel or fan would scoff at 15, 5 and 3. Just something to chew on.

My personal reason

Is that he is not a good enough shooter to play alongside Roy.

Because Roy dominates the ball so much it is critical that the point guard be an outside threat.

And Blake for all his flaws is a good 3 point shooter

I'd agree with that if.

Webster wasn’t back. but we now gain a 3pt threat from the 3 which was sorely needed last season.

Webster isn't back as far as I know

He still isn’t cleared to run.

Roy is versatile

and does not need to dominate the ball.

Also, Miller can get the ball inside to the bigs, allowing Roy to play off the ball more.

Brandon takes a HUGE beating when he is dominating the ball. We need someone to take the pressure off of him in order to keep him healthy and productive. The Houston series showed the Blazers that they need another option. Miller would be a huge help to Brandon.

In our offense.....

Our PG and SG play off of each other. The reason Blake plays so well with Roy is that Blake has the ability to initiate the offense or play a SG sytle off the ball game via his shooting. Depending on what Roy/ Nate call. Miller does not give us this same dimention. His outside shooting is something of legend and i dont mean that in the Larry Bird way, i mean it in the Mark Eaton way. He is a good player overall and is still performing at a very high level but in my opinion his is the worst fit for us at PG simply because of his outside shooting.

by blazerbeliever97504 on Jul 5, 2009 11:20 AM PDT reply actions

Further more....

I personally think thats why Sergio didnt work out and Bayless is still riding the pine. Sergio: great initiator but horrable shooter. Bayless: Great slasher/scorer, suspect jumper and limited PG skills. Blake for all of his defense flaws, is a very good shooter and has a high BBIQ plus knows his place. Good fit on offense for our squad.

by blazerbeliever97504 on Jul 5, 2009 11:23 AM PDT reply actions

Bayless was shot almost 41% from behind the arc in college

I’ve heard that they’re trying to retool his shot (maybe quicker/higher release), so that may be part of the reason for his shooting problems. Given more time and practice, I think he could be a deadeye shot. Heck, at one point, Outlaw couldn’t shoot.

You know I understand all of these legitimate system concerns but,

At this point an upgrade in talent at a fairly limited cost (which a 33 yr old pg would demand) sounds like a pretty damn good deal to me. Someone who can create and dish in the fourth quarter so Roy doesnt ALWYAS have to would be great for the team and I feel like Miller is a system player who can adapt. While his physical tools may limit him, He is heady enough to make things work.

Blazers needs?

The Blazers still need a back up power forward and IMO Antonio McDyess is that player that they need at that spot. And McDyess is a very good Vet.
Mark ‘Dyess’ down for a double-double each night. After re-joining Detroit mid-season, the polite veteran posted a workmanlike 10 points and 10 rebounds per game. McDyess could replace Yao in Houston, where he, coincidentally, has his off-season home. But if KP can Make him an offer and let him know Portland is where he needs to be if he wants a RING. The Blazers need McDyess as their back up power forward/Center. And he won’t cost as much as Lee and IMO you get the same thing from both players. And I like D.Harris better then A.Miller and that just MO

by billyjoejack on Jul 5, 2009 11:58 AM PDT reply actions

I like the idea of Dyess.

I mean I would love David Lee but there is no way he would want to back up and there is no way we should spend that kind of money on a guy who WOULD backup.

KP said "no" when texted about Miller

I read that somewhere back on Wedneday-THursday, perhaps it was Ben’s twiiter, can’t remember with all that’s gone on this week

it doesn’t mean KP won’t change his mind and pursue Andre now that Hedo has bolted, but I wouldn’t expect it to happen

David Lee, maybe Lamar Odom, at least that’s what the national reporters are saying

http://ken-berger.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/11838893/15890497?source=rss_blogs_NBA

the Blazers are moving on. They’re expected to make a push for Knicks restricted free agent David Lee, who has not received the anticipated interest from teams with cap space like Memphis (which acquired Zach Randolph), Detroit (which spent its money on Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva), plus Oklahoma City and Sacramento, neither of which is taking an aggressive posture in the first wave of free agency. The Blazers also are expected to focus on a point guard such as Sixers free agent Andre Miller, and some rival executives wonder if GM Kevin Pritchard will make a play for Lakers free agent Lamar Odom.

apparently blazer fans aren't aware

of the 2 point shot.
I really don’t understand all of this to be completely honest. It just seems like in a liberal city of portland blazers fans are fairly conservative when it comes to to change on the blazers roster. I understand “stay the course” when it comes to the core of the young blazers but seriously did the Lakers system warrant Artest or the Cavs Shaq? or the spurs with Jefferson or Magic with VC? At some point talent and production trump all. to get better we need to get BETTER players it is as simple as that. I’m not saying go out and get a team killer like Iverson just a guy who will make the team better. I think our fans are just SO afraid of a second coming of the jailblazers or something that we can’t see the forest through the trees.

Threats at the arc space the floor

And long-range 2pt jumpers are the least efficient way to get points.

by ninjasocks on Jul 5, 2009 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I believe this is how Nate/KP see it, as well

They’d rather have a lay-in or a 3 pointer rather than see Travis dribble once and shoot a 15-20 footer. Can’t say that I blame them

You need shooters to spread the floor, then Oden, LMA and Roy will have room to operate. Sure, I’d love to see another penetrator added to the mix (so would KP, that’s why he went after Hedo) but Andre Miller is not the “best” choice for this team, he’s just the most available one. I think Nate and KP really want to see what kind of penetrating PG they already have in Jerryd Bayless.

So, if any veteran PG is brought in, it might be a guy like Keyon Dooling, who just so happens to be a great 3 point shooter

Our 'style' needs to change before Brandon decides to retire

at the age of 30! :p. He dominates the ball so much because he HAS TO. We need a PG that can penetrate and create thus giving BRoy some open 18-22 foot jumper lovin’ more often.

Makes an excellent point. why is everybody so afraid of Miller? Okay so he doesnt shoot the three. We have enough guys that do, but we don’t have anybody who can give us what miller can. My first choice ( after checking his game logs on nba.com) is Steve Nash though. He’s never won a title, but he is a ferocious competitor and one of the best shooters in the history of the league. With Nash EVERYBODY’S numbers and PER will increase along with our chances to win a championship. Nash, Roy, Batum, Aldridge, Oden OMG!!!!!

by blaze1 on Jul 5, 2009 1:11 PM PDT reply actions

I think

Miller is a good player, but a bad fit. He needs the ball to be effective. That is why Hinrich is a perfect fit for us. He can play off the ball. In Chicago, he sometimes played with Rose. Hinrich is like an improved Steve Blake (who is a PERFECT fit on this team but not really a great individual talent). Too bad Chicago won’t want to give him up now that Gordon is gone to Detroit.

by axel360 on Jul 5, 2009 2:02 PM PDT reply actions

yup

I had the RLEC all lined up and ready to go, and was targeting Kirk last February. But the “cake-bakers” wanted to stand pat

Sure, the team won 54 games, but then only 2 in post season

Meanwhile, Hinrich had a great series against Boston. I’m not sayin’ KP made a mistake…but between the (reported) Devin Harris deal that didn’t happen in the winter of 2007 and his “let’s just wait until the summer” decision last February, does anyone still believe the roster is going to be better off at the end of this month, than it would have been if KP had acted a little bit sooner? Sometimes patience isn’t a virtue, and he who hesitates lives to reget it

Agree

I Agree 100% in fact I think we would be much improved to sign McDyess in free agency. And trade for Hinrich maybe Outlaw,Cunnigham, and trade exciption. Just don’t know how it would work. I’m not a GM? But would love to be one.

by billyjoejack on Jul 5, 2009 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions

If he were willing to sign for less than the $10M/year he's reportedly asking for...

I’d be tempted to go for it. The problem is that $10M/year, even if it were only for 3 years, is a lot of scratch for a guy who’s right at that age where most players’ physical skills start to decline. And his game is very dependent on his physical tools/ability to get to the basket, since he has no real outside shot to speak of. If we had a crystal ball that could tell us that his productivity will remain high for a few more years, he’d be a great guy to sign. As it is, it would be a big gamble.

He’s even more of a gamble than signing someone like Jason Kidd because Kidd’s physical skills have already declined; you know that up front. And he’s been able to make up for a lot of that decline by becoming a knock-down three point shooter (.406 overall last year, .447 in last year’s playoffs). If I thought Miller were likely to do the same, I might advocate taking the risk, but looking at his three point shooting over his career it doesn’t seem likely. The best percentage he’s ever shot from three over a season is .285, last year, which is only slightly better than Kidd’s worst three point shooting season, .272 as a rookie.

At his age and for the money he’s asking, Miller is just too big a risk.

by MDBlazerfan on Jul 5, 2009 4:05 PM PDT reply actions

why are people claiming he "can't shoot"?

So you’ll take Blake’s 11 points a game but my god he hit 3 THREES YES!!!!! and shooting a sweet 42 percent but you’re all so uninterested in 16 points a game from a guy who has done nothing but shoot over 46 percent his last 6 seasons and averaged over 16? oh only 3 of those 16 came from beyond the arc… I get it?

I understand we need players around the 3pt line to stretch the D but did anyone really give a shit about blake last year? the threes he hit weren’t contested. I don’t see teams game planning for 11 ppg this year, maybe i’m crazy.

by duckyou on Jul 5, 2009 5:32 PM PDT reply actions

tay Prince

People are forgetting about prince. I believe he could be had for the right price. He would be a nice fit. Also the two that intrigue me is marvin williams and Leon powe, who is hurt and would come cheap, but when healty has a lot of potential.

I think I would rather have Powe thne Bass in the long term

by sharp2403 on Jul 5, 2009 6:16 PM PDT reply actions

The thing about Miller's lack of 3 point shooting

Is that he doesn’t TAKE them either. It’s not like Artest, hucking up shots like he’s a 60% shooter. Miller finds the shots he can hit, and he’s very VERY good at getting to spots on the floor where he can score.

I’m not sure he’s the answer, but he’s a big upgrade at PG, don’t doubt that for a second.

by TheThinWhiteDuke on Jul 5, 2009 6:26 PM PDT reply actions

He can Shoot!!

Something like 50 % actually. Who cares Where its from dude is hitting half his shots! I understand spacing and the value of the three point threats and how they open up the floor. With that said though I also understand the value of having another player that can get his own offense. I think that latter is what we need the most! We have a ton of shooters already. Miller is not my first choice but if we can get him on the cheap and for a low amount of years I say yes. I few thoughts to leave everyone with

1. Miller can post up and has a great post game when defended by smaller points. That could be a legitimate option when we are having trouble scoring.

2. “throws the alley-oop as well as anyone who has ever played the game” This is from hollinger so take it for what you want but I like the sound of it! I’m sure Rudy approves!
