Why not Roy?
Why can’t our starting 5 look like Roy, Fernandez, Webster, Aldridge, Oden 1-5 in that order and then our bench be Blake, Bayless, Batum, Outlaw, Pryz… I am not going to lie I like our team the way it is, I am not a fan of getting rid of talent not knowing what we have. Oden? Webster? Bayless w/ minutes? I actually just got done posting this as a reply a moment ago, but I was curious what others thought about the rotation so I thought I would post it here. In addition, and not to offend anyone I am tired of hearing about the newest Raptor...

Depends
If Rudy can show that he can consitently handle the ball and set up the offense then that lineup could work. It would have problems defending smaller quick PG but not every team has a player like that.

The trouble is
That someone in that line-up would have to guard the other team’s point, and that Roy might become exhausted too easily running the point for the whole game.

Isn't that the theory...
Isn’t Roy playing the PG position the theory that has been told to us countless amounts of times by those closest to the organization? If thats the case, then I suppose it does make most sense to get a player like Turk (obviously not him anymore…but you know what I mean…). I can see why we are so hot after another scorer/playmaker…

wow, there are so many past posts on this topic . . . .
IMO Roy would spend too much energy bringing up the ball, maintaining possession, and guarding the other teams PG (perhaps not very well). I think he is much more effective picking his spots to run the offense and create his own play.
We already rely on him too much. If he also plays PG and then goes down to injury, what the heck is the team going to do?

About being a fan
One of the many great things about being a fan of the Trail Blazers is that it is 12:40 in the morning and I am able to write about rotations that pop into my head for whatever reason and then throw them out to you all to see what you all think. We have had the same roster for the last 2 years I am positive that this rotation has been out there prior to this point… I also know that there were 15+ articles about why Hedo would or would not be a good fit w/ Portland, and that is just the last week. I enjoy everything about the Blazers… I do think that one of the funnier things that happens on Blazers Edge is “This should be a Fan post, not a fan shot” or “haven’t we discussed this in the past”… Really, NO KIDDING I am a fan, and I will read whatever any other Blazer fan writes regardless of where it is posted, Oh also it is the off season, and the only moves the Blazers have officially made are all minor. Not a whole lot to chat about!

I understand but
it gets tiring when we discuss the same thing over and over and over and it still gets brought up…
I apologize if my BEdge fuse is short but this Hedo thing has me out of whack

It's all good
… because at the end of the day we all want the same thing, Blazer Championships, and lots of them!

yep
If Hedo had agreed to come to PDX he would’ve eaten into Rudy’s PT (by filling up the SF minutes so Nate couldn’t slide Brandon over to the 3, like last year) and so I speculated that maybe the Blazers were thinking of playing a Roy-Rudy backcourt to provide Rudy with 25+mpg.
But that’s not an “ideal” scenario for the reasons RayBourque has mentioned. Rudy will eventually have to be traded because of the “logjam” at SG and the emergence of Batum. It’s inevitable
When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

Why do people keep suggesting this?
If this worked, you’d think Nate McMillan would have already switched to this lineup. This lineup is useful at certain times in a game, but it would wear Roy out if it were full time. And fast PGs like CP3 or Tony Parker would absolutely murder Roy at the defensive end. Roy just doesn’t have the speed and athleticism necessary for a player his size to play the point.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.—Dune

This line-up did not work well last year. That's probably why.
If we would have got Hedo, I’m sure we would have seen this line-up, and long as Rudy was able to stay in front of PG’s. Now, unless we get another point forward, I don’t see this line-up happening consistently.

This would work better with Batum than Webster.
The suggested lineup is to scoring-heavy. It would be more effective to play batum at the three with roy and rudy at the guards. Roy could guard the opposing SF, Rudy could guard the SG, and Batum could guard the PG in most situations. I would still prefer to trade for a guard and bring rudy and webster in as the second unit.

I agree that Roy taking the ball across court every time adds some wear and tear, but
You could start Batum and put him on the opposing team’s point guard. Roy or Rudy could guard the small forward spot.
It’s true that there are disadvantages to this approach, but there are also advantages – not the least of which is having Rudy on the court more consistently.
by ajinoregon on Jul 5, 2009 12:04 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
The other advantage is
being able to better use Bayless’s strengths by playing him at two guard coming off the bench.

Can we trade
Bayless for Jarrett Jack and Brandon Rush? We could erase what in my mind was the only poor move of the KP era.
