Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Continues Rampage, New York Wins On Road

Let it bake, just add frosting, don't change the recipe

This post should address the notion of NOT trying to make a "HOME RUN" deal (because as far as free agents go, there isn't one - that includes Turkoglu when he was available) but rather being sensible with our Cap $ and either making some REASONABLE moves to address known weaknesses (playoff experience, tougness, 3rd scoring option, No backup PF) or my preference, make a lop-sided trade for someone who is NOT the "best of whats available" but a specific target that we want in order to address the aforementioned "weaknesses".

The idea of perhaps holding off on Free Agency and using our cap space for trades can be risky for a number of reasons, but unless we can sign 1 or 2 free agents for the MLE who address immediate needs (of which our options at this point are limited) I say be smart, take our time and perhaps hold back for now.

The reason I feel this way is because if you look at our roster as it is now, and are willing BELIEVE in 1) The development of Batum, Bayless, and Oden, and  2) The full recovery of Martell Webster, then the only thing we really need is a backup PF to help out LaMarcus.

If we assume that Bayless can make the jump to starting PG, and Batum will blossom into a future superstar, and Oden becomes a fraction of the player we dreamed about before the knee surgery,  then we already have the making of a championship team right there, and i haven't even mentioned what a healthy Martell could add to the equation!

Its easy to get caught up in the push to try to win a championship right away, but if we keep our current guys (give or take 1 or 2  smart trades) we have the pieces we need to be championship contenters 2-3 years down the road.  The only pieces I would add would be REASONABLE FA contracts now, OR a big trade for a true stud that we could really use.

In short, I'm not saying let our Cap $ go to waste, but rather use it wisely and dont force an addition, but make the SMART choice(s) that wont haunt us for years to come when we are making our championship push or looking to repeat. What do you think?

What's the differance of 3-6 mil? oh about 20+ more losses, and the chance to watch the only star leave by the end of the season. Suck it Hedo!

Fill the hole strategy

vs. best player available.
Holes tough to fill with whats left out there if PG and Good back up PF are what we want
Best available is getting an asset that is available for trade at later time, but needs time and could disrupt chemistry in the mean while.
Fit might work better with this team.

Fill the whole

Joe Smith of the Cavs is the type of player, not the player, the type of player I thought we were going to go for. Someone like Battier…a veteran who influences the flow of the game in subtle ways, who keeps the interpersonal stuff breezy, etc. Would anyone agree with this? Disagree?
Good post

Batum and superstar?

Eh, I have to re-think my definition if that’s the case.

Batum a potential superstar

as the Emporer would say “you lack vision my friend”

by venjance on Jul 4, 2009 6:26 PM PDT reply actions

please call KP with this idea

apparently he’s on the phones with agents looking for homerun-B. I really hope all this david lee talk on ESPN is overblown (given the recent reporting from that site I’d say thats probably pretty likely).

I still trust KP to make good decisions for the franchise though, I’m just not another KP monkey who attacks anyone who questions his all knowing power.

The Blazers as a whole are far more like my wife than like me in the sense of their physicality on defense.

Problems at the PG

In general, I don’t mind waiting and seeing what develops. The only problem I have with this scenario is that it seems to assume Bayless can morph into a starting PG in the NBA—even an upgrade over Blake. That would be great, and I hope it happens, but I haven’t seen Bayless distribute the ball well enough yet. Remember, he hasn’t even shown his ability to be a better PG than Sergio yet, and we just ave him away. Like I said, I hope Bayless can become a solid NBA PG, but expecting that of him in the near future seems uncertain.

by VTDuck on Jul 4, 2009 6:39 PM PDT reply actions

Uncertain...

yes, Bayless and uncertainty go hand in hand, but is there a FA who offers us any certainty in this instance? No! Remeber that Bayless was projected as a top 4 pick in last yrs draft, and if you youtube his highlights you can see that although not necessarliy a “true pg” (whatever that means nowadays) he has ridiculous potential to become a stud, he just needs time and exposure. I can only hope that Nate lets him run the show in the clutch next season, nobody develops without being given a chance, i BELIEVE in Bayless!

lost all credibility with the Batum superstar statement.

+ 1

This has been my constant refrain. Patience ! We have
our young core; talent, chemistry and care for each other.
Team = Championship. By adding the wrong FA pieces,
the excellent balance can be tipped by shot demands, locker room
disension, etc. Let the cake bake & add the RIGHT vet to lead on
defense and toughness (w/ Joel & GO).
Make it the right VET !

It's GO time !

More "Rise with us"?

I agree that things aren’t as dark as they might seem. We aren’t like Chicago of a few years back that was banking on basing their entire rebuild on the ability to attract and sign free agents and rudely discovered how hard that can become.

Yes, we have a young playoff team in place, with great room for improvement to exist from within simply with our current roster and long term our Euro Prospects.

However, it isn’t really the fans that changed the perceived expectations of this off season. With headlines to the affect of Allen says “Upgrade The Roster”…and KP himself saying our timeline for improvement has been moved up, coupled with months and months of talk about our being under the cap and this being the off season we made a move in free agency and/or the trade market. It’s a little late to stave off disappointment in how this off season has unfolded thus far.

Fans I think are never really too patient, but in general I think Blazer fans have been pretty patient. We’ve waited and watched Brandon and LMA develop, we have waited for Oden, we’ve waited for Webster. What else could we do? We’ve watched and enjoyed the “cake” baking. Now was suppose to be the time for the icing….(god I hate this analogy) . Bottom line our cap space is “use it or lose it”, and Paul Allen is evidently commited to improving the roster. The Blazers must approach this off-season and the free agent/trade market looking to improve The Blazer as much as possible.

Yes, good things come to those who wait, but you also have to know when to make a move.

It’s tricky, I also don’t want panic, or chemistry killing moves. For that matter I’d rather NOT see us renounce the rights to Freeland or Kopponen, I like having the European Prospect Pipeline…and between Freeland, Kopponen and now Victor Claver, I’d be willing to bet that in the future at least one of those prospects becomes a valuable asset. When I heard that The Blazer might have to renounce the rights to Freeland and Kopponen to sign Hedo, I had a bad feeling. I’m hoping that won’t have to happen now. That might become the silver lining to this cloud.

Blazers needs? The Blazers still need a back up power forward and IMO Antonio McDyess is that player that they need at that spot. And McDyess is a very good Vet.
Mark ‘Dyess’ down for a double-double each night. After re-joining Detroit mid-season, the polite veteran posted a workmanlike 10 points and 10 rebounds per game. McDyess could replace Yao in Houston, where he, coincidentally, has his off-season home. But if KP can Make him an offer and let him know Portland is where he needs to be if he wants a RING. The Blazers need McDyess as their back up power forward/Center. And he won’t cost as much as Lee and IMO you get the same thing from both players. And I like D.Harris better then A.Miller and that just MO
