Trade Drawer - Independence Day, Post Hedon't Edition
On this July 4th many of you are celebrating the Blazers' independence from Hedo and his bloated contract. As I was one of the earliest and most ardent supporters of Hedo becoming a Blazer, unfortunately I don't have the luxury of saying, "I never really wanted him here anyway." But regardless of where you stood on the Hedo/Hedon't debate over whether He fit with Portland, its time to get up, dust ourselves off and intrepidly look to the future.
Ever since it became clear that he Hedo is a money-grubbing, duplicitous, douche who can't stand up to his wife....aahheeemm....I mean ever since it became clear that Portland was not the best destination for Hedo and his family, (sorry, it still hurts) I've been trying to fill the void with some genuine hope that KP can come up with a move that makes us all say that this whole episode turned out for the best.
And my mind keeps coming back to something I read from a recent Wendell Maxey post about the Nets being willing to consider offers for Devin Harris.
"Back to Devin Harris real quick: would you like to see him running the break with Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge? Many would. Because he could have been had on draft night. The New Jersey Nets were reportedly shopping him for expiring contracts and draft picks. Not sure if he is still on the market, but it’s worth Kevin Pritchard inquiring about with Rod Thorn." 7/2/09 Beyond the Beat
To me, a move of this magnitude would be just about the only thing that would erase the sting of Hedo leaving us at the alter. So I'm wondering what you think it would take to pull it off. Personally I'd be willing to part with Rudy, Outlaw, and Bayless if it meant getting a young All-Star point guard like Devin Harris. I'll admit that I don't know whether this could be achieved under the trade/salary cap rules. Maybe you can help me out with that. It doesn't work using the trade machine, but I doubt that means it couldn't be done somehow (ie: exceptions).
Anyway, this isn't just focused on Devin Harris. I'd love to hear all ideas for lopsided trades and other moves that KP could consider. As Dave pointed out, "This may be the biggest challenge of KP's career." So lets help our boy out. Thanks.

Monta Ellis
is he a turd for lying to the Warriors about how he broke his anke? sure; but honestly, I probably woulda done the same thing. We need another scorer that can penetrate so when teams like the rockets throw everything at Broy, we can make them pay. We don’t need another jump shooter (although he can shoot, just not from 3), we don’t really need another distributor (the whole team passes exceptionally well and plays an unselfish brand of bball), I think we could flat out use another offensive weapon that is fast as hell.
GS just drafted Steph Curry so I would think they would at least consider losing Ellis, espcially because of his contract (11 mil). But it would prob take a few carrots…
The Blazers as a whole are far more like my wife than like me in the sense of their physicality on defense.

I would rather make a run at Sessions
as he is a good finisher and a good pick and roll pg, and he is the glove compared to Ellis.

Monta's a nice player
Unless he’s an out and out turd like Hedo (couldn’t resist it) he might flourish around our team guys. Do we really need him.

Marvin Williams
I have heard a few grumblings about him, but cannot seem to find out what is up with his contract. is he RFA right now?
storyteller had his qualifying offer at 7,355,166
have they made this offer or is that the minnimum requirement?
anyways if he is a free agent we could offer 4yr/33mil or something around that,
he is a good rebounder, extremely athletic, and can provide another scoring option

we have the cap space to make this happen
but NJ wants someone to take Bobby Simmons so they dont have to pay him this year and that makes for around 19mil in contracts and we have 9mil in cap space, and cannot easily come up with the other 10mil in contracts without giving up something like Pryz, who they probably wont take.
A third team would probably have to come in to make this happen. It would also be nice not to completely gut the bench scoring so hanging onto either Rudy or Outlaw would be nice.

Rondo for Aldridge
in sign and trade for both players. Then go out pick up Milsap or Lee as a free agent.
Both Aldridge and Rondo will be playing the final year of their rookie contracts this coming season.

By the way it makes a lot of sense for both sides.
The Celtics will have an all star caliber player to replace Garnett if he gets hurts or retires. Blazers get the second playmaker they covet and replace Aldridge with a slightly less talented but more physical forward.

Love that idea, but it won't happen.

Don't like it at all
I love Rondo’s game and think he could be great for the Blazers, but given the recent comments about him by Ainge and Rivers, I don’t know that his head is in the right place. If it’s not, he’s not worth the risk, even if we were also able to sign Millsap or Lee.
BTW, I don’t think LMA is close to hitting his ceiling yet, offensively or defensively. I don’t know that he’ll ever reach the Garnett level that Nate has said he’s capable of, but I think he could make it into Chris Bosh range, which is still pretty darn good.

That's not bad
It would be tough to part with Aldridge though. Even for a guy like Lee.

Back to Harris
What if we could pry Sessions from Milwaukee? Sign and trade him and Rudy (seriously, how are we going to keep a potential All-Star happy playing behind a budding super-star?) and say Blake to the Nets. They would have to consider that if they have reasons for shopping Harris, and that gives us some consolidation and also uses some cap space. Then, grab Powe with the rest of the cap space to back up LMA.
Harris/Bayless
Roy/Webster
Batum/Trout
Aldrige/Powe
Oden/Pryz

KP just passed up on a guy with no ACLs. Reportedly Powe is the same, tore ACL in HS and never healed properly/got right surgery. Just in one knee.
If you want to trade our spare parts for Devin Harris, I have three quarters I would like to trade for your dollar

I didn't realize that.
I like his game, but we don’t really need an injury risk. Thanks for the info. You’re the man Norsk.

That would be awesome.
But we’d have to wait until the midseason to do this, b/c you can’t sign a free agent and then trade him right away.

We wouldnt be able to do that trade until
december
cant sign and trade another teams FA

there is a loophole
that i saw in a wendell maxey blog post where if the player you are signing knows about the trade and agrees to it before he signs you are allowed to trade him right away. its a way for teams with no cap space to use teams with cap space to get a free agent that they covet. something for the blazers to potentially think about when disussing potential big trades

is that loophole
that the original team has to sign him and trade him
That is the only way I have seen it gotten around, but then it is a 3 team trade.

Haha.
Hedon’t! I used that yesterday in a txt to my friend around 5:59PM last night.

Devon Harris all the way!
We have too much depth really, it hurts us. More minutes for all, cull the fat!
Trade Bayless+Blake+Outlaw plus draft picks/money/rights to players(Claver?) and get Harris and Boon or Najera for backup PF. Or even Sean Williams if salaries match.

Yeah I would give up anybody not named Roy, Aldridge, or Oden if it means we get Harris
