Hedo Turkgolu: 7 Stages of grief (now 14)

When I logged on the morning of  July 1st, after NBA teams could officially open dialogues with free agents, I was greeted wth the headline of "Portland first team to call Hedo's Agent"

1. SHOCK & DENIAL-

I had seen Hedo in the playoffs. He was a defensive liability, with a limited shooting percentage. Wen you looked up "effecient" in the dictionary, his name was not there.

This wasn't really happening. THis was just a rumor circulated by Turk's agent to inflate his value. Cruel, but... no harm, no foul.

He's Brandon Roy dipped in Molasses, covered in carmel, running through mud, but 4 inches taller.

2. PAIN & GUILT-

Who was going to be out now? Outlaw? His name has "out" in it... that seems reasonable. Sergio's gone. So are Frye, Ruff, and Shav. But there aren't enough minutes to go around.

I forgot about Batum! Oh! I am so sorry Nic! And you , Rudy.

This sucks.

3. ANGER & BARGAINING-

How DARE KP do this???? He's Prtch-slapping himSELF!!!!! Rudy is angry!!!!

There's got to be a secondary move to this.

Maybe we'll sign him and trade him....

I HATE THIS!!!!!!

4. "DEPRESSION", REFLECTION, LONELINESS-

Oh Travis... we only knew ye for six semi excruciating years.

What would have been if we'd stayed together?

Is the dream dead?

5. THE UPWARD TURN-

This can't be as bad as it looks.

Didn't Dwight Howard praise how much Hedo helped his offensive game?

Wow! What a youtube clip of highlights!!!

6. RECONSTRUCTION & WORKING THROUGH-

OK. I just checked realgm, bustabucket, O.Live, truehop, bedge, etc. etc. etc. There's lots of people who like this!

Hedo plays "point forward" isn't that pretty much what we were getting at when we on the BEdge wanted a point guard and a backup PF?

Wow! I just saw more clips of him working the pick and roll with Dwight! It would be great for someone to actually pass BACK TO THE PICK SETTER once in a while.

(Nate, KP. Anyone reads this.... Please. Do this. the Pick and Pop must stop.)

7. ACCEPTANCE & HOPE-

Ok. Ok. I think I can see this.

He doesn't shoot a high percentage, but he IS a playmaker. He can take a LOT of pressure off Brandon. Wow.

With him on board, Oden should SKYROCKET!!!

With as many open 3s as Nic and Outlaw got this year, Hedo's % is bound to be good!

No you're not!

can you be in someone else’s stage one? Can someone be your denial that you’re in denial?

Pace Manion?

I just wanted to write a player’s name with a question mark…there haven’t been enough posts employing that gimmick.

Seriously, great post! You summed up the past 3 days for me.

I didn't expirience the upswing.

I’m glad this transaction fell apart. The team seemed well balanced and poised for growth. Bringing in Turkgolu interfered with the playing time of some of the players that I’m most excited to watch next year. There is so much talent on this team that is very young and has only alluded to the potential of coming years. It’s exciting to think about and Turkgolu, although a fine player, wasn’t what I had imagined. I was envisioning minor adjustments here and there but nothing like this. Does anyone have an opinion of Mcdyess? I’m surprised his name hasn’t come up more (veteran, genial, etc.) Battier would seems like the absolute ideal for this team….
Anyway… Sorry. I never progressed past stage 5.

I woke up this morning (okay...it was around 1pm) and saw that hedo to portland was almost a done deal

then I went to a friend’s birthday/july 4 party and told him to wish for a miracle that hedo would somehow end up not in portland.

Came back home and voila.

"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.

"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

Accept

That Shawn Marion has been given a bad rap by the media because he is not the most media savvy guy.

Patience :)

by TheGreatDane17 on Jul 4, 2009 9:24 AM PDT reply actions

Marion values himself way too highly

and he’s chronically unhappy when he’s not getting what he thinks he is worth. I think he would be a big mistake for the blazers unless he somehow had a 180 degree attitude change which I don’t think will happen.

KP forces Toronto to overpay

If Hedo signs twith the Raptors they will have overpayed and limited their options. Meanwhile we have the biggest chunk of change to offer to in lopsided trades, which looks likely for plan B. The only other FA the looks good would be Odom and I have less desire for him than Hedo. I think we’ll see a lopsided trade down the road. Who knows whats available. If Memophis can trade for z-bo, then anything can happen.

by NWfan on Jul 4, 2009 10:32 AM PDT reply actions

I think Odom would be a good next option for us

I hate the guy for all the shenanigans he’s had with the Blazers, but that is actually one of the things I respect about him too. At least he can plan defense. He takes the ball to the hole. However, he is a poor 3-pt shooter.

by RayBourque on Jul 4, 2009 10:44 AM PDT up reply actions

He's essentially a PF, so the 3 point shooting is unimportant.

I don’t see him as the answer.

We should all start thinking trade:

Travis Outlaw ($4M) to team over the cap for _________________________ ($14M).

I’m sure he’s called about Gerald Wallace and Tayshaun Prince.

by Cablinasian on Jul 4, 2009 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

So if you convince yourself that this was all planned by KP in order to get Toronto to blow all of their cap space by overpaying for a 30 year old forward with declining skills (and renouncing half their squad which will now have to be filled by guys making the league minimum), thus getting a key competitor out of the way so the Blazers can get the player(s) they REALLY wanted all along, does that put you in the stage of denial or acceptance?

I’m just asking… for a friend.

Nahhhh, I think that would be a case of Pritchmania-driven denial.

Which, when left untreated, may become a form of insanity.
