Next target...Shane Battier? (with poll)

Following the "Turkish defection" at least we have some more insight re: what the Blazers are interested in, because of their "1st" choice (Hedo)

They want a veteran with high BBIQ who can make the players around him better. And we know KP/Nate value good outside shooting. Shane isn't the penetrator and creator that Turk is (few big men are) but he is an excellent perimeter defender (and "another coach on the floor" by all accounts)

Houston also just signed Ariza, so there is some "duplication" of talent between Trevor and Shane, although there's no reason the two of them couldn't start at the SG/SF positions. (Indeed, that's probably Adelman's current plan, now that Artest is gone)

The good news is KP has his cap-space "back" (though it never really left) and he can do an unbalanced trade. Now for the bad news: it's going to cost KP some actual talent to pry Battier away, and there's really no "bad" contacts on the Rocket's ledger (besides TMEC, or course) to use as "leverage"

Would Houston accept Outlaw+Bayless for Battier? Shane has 2 years remaining on his deal [6,864,200; 7,354,500] and the salaries would match, not that it really matters, now. Would Portland consider trading Rudy+capspace for Shane? How about Batum? What about Joel?

As much as I like the "idea" of Battier I'm not sure I could "sign off" on those last 3 options

What about you? Can anyone think of a deal that wouldn't "hurt" too much from a Blazer's perspective that would also "make sense" from Houston's point of view? Or, do you think that Shane is the "wrong" target?

I am a rare type of Blazer fan, apparently...

I am all for letting certain pieces gel/develop instead of winning it all NOW. I believe Bayless and Batum are our future. All we need to add is a PG (Harris, Hinrich). Since NJ is dumping salary to make a run at the King, I think Harris is a definite possibility.

I agree with you mainly

I’m not so sure Harris is available, I would think that if they could only keep one guy it would be him. I do agree that it’s not so desperate to get someone just because others are.

I think by your philosophy

I think if we’re going to add a veteran PG to our ranks while we let Bayless develop, we should throw Kirk in the mix. I would also say we need an SF though. Battier isn’t really a player I would see gelling with the Blazers, but he’s definitely a possibility since we got denied by Hedo.

Lamar Odom

the Lakers signed Artest already they havnt got Odom what if we got him as the versatile all everything man that our team needs. i know he isnt popular in Portland but anything to make the lakers worse would help our chances in the future of winning a championship

The lakers *did not sign Artest already!*

They have an agreement “in principle only,” bc it is impossible to sign anyone till the 8th, we could get him as well!!!

Pssht

He’s definitely more popular than ARIZA, thats for sure. And people are all up in arms about Ariza, so why not? I think Odom would be a great fit in Portland.

Normally I'd dismiss Odom as a possibility

but I remember Nate saying that he was impressed by Lamar’s work ethic during the USA Basketball workouts a few years ago. So maybe there IS a match here (but right now after getting “jilted” by one free agent it’s hard to be optimistic…)

There’s no doubt that Portland can outbid L*A for LO’s services, if they want him bad enough. But will Lamar “want” Portland? He may have some respect for Nate, because of their USA basketball experience, and Odom does feature the size and many of the skills that KP was looking for, in Hedo. Lamar is “better off” when he’s not the 2nd or 3rd “option” on a team—and that’’s a good thing in Portland—because no one would want him to be “the guy”. Just another soldier to help “beat L*A”

The best part of all? Mike Rice will have to learn how to pronounce “Odom” vs “Oden” every night! That in itself will be “worth” all of the inconsistency and “off” nights that seem to frustrate the fans who have followed LO, over the years.

We DO NOT need a SF

I think KP knows that. Lets focus on the teams needs.

by Rick_D on Jul 3, 2009 9:31 PM PDT reply actions

Couldn't agree with you more!

My sentiments exactly. I don’t know why so many people want an upgrade at SF. Batum is only 19 and completely tore it up last season! I have no doubts he’s going to be something pretty special. He won’t develop riding the pine.

by giovanni on Jul 3, 2009 9:33 PM PDT up reply actions

That is just experience vs. inexperience.

Batum is a teenager. Give the man time. He will be amazing.

by giovanni on Jul 3, 2009 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

It was also 70 lbs of muscle beating Batum down...

I love Batum, but Artest gives us a championship level SF next year and we are kidding ourselves if we think Batum at 20 will give us that next year, Artest will be better next June, and if we meet Lebron next June, he’ll be a far better cover on Lebron than Batum

Where is the fire?

I’d rather let everyone develop and win 7 out of the next 10 championships, then win maybe one or two immediately.

We DO NOT need a SF

Well, not just “any” SF, that’s true. But you can’t really say “I think KP knows that” when he was doing everything he could to acquire Hedo this afternoon! (Jason Quick said on Thursday that he has never seen KP and NAte be “so sure” about bringing in a nedw player as they were with Turk)

The last thing I’m advocating is “make a deal just ot make a deal” (I think Battier would be a good fit, we’ve been discussing him for quite awhile, around here.) He may not be the best choice, for the reasons I outlined above. But we do know improving the team’s BBIQ and “going for it” are, in fact, what the Blazers are interested in doing right now. The “Turk pursuit” should’ve made that very clear to everyone

I don’t think that KP is going to shink back like a scolded puppy and sit on the 9 mil of cap-space, just because he got left at the altar by Hedo and his wife. The only question that remains tonight is: who is “plan B”? Is it really a point guard? (Quick said KP wasn’t looking to upgrade that position, but that was “before” the Turkish defection.)

I’m perfectly willing to “focus” on the team’s needs; this morning they thought they needed a better SF. Are you so sure they changed their mind in the last 8 hours?

this was my exact thought

I think we would be a far better team with battier than turkeypoo.

Josh Childress has an opt-out after every season... He was visiting Milwaukee who can only offer the MLE.

Not saying he’s THE guy, but he’s A guy…

He would fulfill the point forward criterion used to argue for Hedo

And he can even do it on defense at least against bigger point guards, as demonstrated by his play in Europe. Problem is he can’t shoot from outside and in Europe had huge problems getting to the basket with his superior but not elite athleticism against zone defenses and often had to settle for mid-range jumpers a la Travis or not shooting enough, but in the NBA with less clogged lanes he could work well.

If you want to trade our spare parts for Devin Harris, I have three quarters I would like to trade for your dollar

A couple of other names we haven't talked about, lately

Tayshaun Prince and Jason Maxiell…now that KP has his cap-space “back” could he possibly make an offer that Joe Dumars can’t refuse? Prince is a “point forward” who is a better defender than Hedo and “everybody loves Maxiell” as a banger to play “behind” LMA. Both have playoff experience

After signing Gordon and Villanueva maybe Detroit would like a little cap relief? I’m not sure which Blazer player(s) they’d be interested in, though…

missing one very important thing

a BIG part of why we wanted Hedo was his ability to be a playmaker, creator, and facilitator, something which we currently have only one of. Ariza, Artest, Battier — none of these guys fit that bill.

Not sure where we go from here, but the 3 years in the making capspace 2009 plan is turning into a big huge disaster

How did you guys win that?

I think I did mention that

Yep

Shane isn’t the penetrator and creator that Turk is (few big men are)

What do you think of Odom? He’s got some handles, and could play the 3/4 like Hedo?

I know Lamar likes the beach, but as we found out with Hedo “money talks” and now that L*A has Artest, I doubt they’d try to outbid the Blazers
