The Official I _______ Turkoglu Thread (UPDATED w/Poll)
Alas, it's over. All the debating and hysteria can be put aside, trades will be made to round out our roster, and we will officially have an army to go to war with for the next 5 years.
It's time to embrace our newest Blazer and show him just how supportive our fanbase can be. This is not a post intended to debate whether or not he's a good fit because that is a moot point. We must now move forward with enthusiasm and a positive outlook for our future, one that will help shape us into a formidable title contender for years to come (rest assured, our fans are a huge reason why the youngest active roster in the league won 54 games last year).
Paul Allen showed him the money, now it's time for us to show him the love and what Blazermania is all about. Allow me to begin:
Mr. Turkoglu, welcome to Portland to you and your family. You have come to the right place. You will be admired, respected, and loved thoroughly for all your tenure here and beyond. Once a Blazer, always a Blazer. You have the unique opportunity to finish your remaining playing days in a breathtakingly gorgeous state that desperately wants to quench its thirst for an NBA championship contender. Get to know the town, the culture, and our fans and we won't let you down. Thank you for choosing us; you will not be disappointed.
OK, BEdge, it's your turn!
************************************
Ok, so as oregonlive.com and nba.com have confirmed, Mr. Turkey became unglued from the prospect of becoming a Blazer and has flown the coup to Toronto (?).
As disappointing or elating as this may be for some, feel free to use this thread to vent or to express whether or not you think this was an epic fail for the Blazers.
Personally, I think it's disgraceful that Hedo has apparently wasted a crucial period of our free agency window to turn his back on what seemed at one point like nothing other than a done deal. I realize that things like this happen, but sheesh, if you really didn't think you'd be comfortable in Portland, then why bother? Perhaps to drive up the price of Toronto's offer? Let her rip, and take the poll if so inclined.

Tony Bennett reports that Minnesota and Portland are swapping draft picks -- Roy to Portland, Foye to Minnesota. That's it? That's the trade? None of the ESPN guys seem remotely fazed. I knew Kevin McHale couldn't just pick the best guy in the draft without somehow screwing it up. I would have bet my Ndudi Ebi rookie cards on it.

well I bitched and moaned about overpaying him...
I even wrote a post suggesting he resembles sloth from the goonies…but he’s a blazer now, so I’m on board.
Hedo, Rudy and Broy with LA and GO in the front court = unstoppable offense.
Inside, outside, passing, matchup problems all over the place, shooting, moving without the ball…its all there
The Blazers as a whole are far more like my wife than like me in the sense of their physicality on defense.

from John Hollinger:
That takes us to the other story, Rudy Fernandez’s reported unhappiness with his role and the pursuit of Turkoglu. But actually, a Turkoglu acquisition should be a godsend for Rudy. In a traditional lineup, it was going to be hard for him to see much daylight behind Roy, but in this set-up he could play extended minutes alongside those two provided he can defend quick point guards.

exactly. As long as Rudy can stay in front of PG's he should play quite well with Roy in the backcourt.
by dario argento on Jul 3, 2009 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Is it Rudy who will be defending the one, or would it be Roy?
Serious question, what do you think? Roy has a lot more muscle to defend SGs, but I’m not sure who would have more success trying to stay with the uber-quick PGs. I’m inclined to think that a lot of this will be match-up dependent.
Bayless may be a better option against the water-bug PGs.

Great signing. We're winning 60 this year, and now have a legit shot to advance
in the postseason. People will be eating their words when they see how efficient our offense is going to be with another playmaker out there. Watch Oden and Rudy be the biggest beneficiaries of this move.

Sad Day!
Sad Day If this deal does go through, I will be very disapointed…
The blazers will regret this move within two years. We may win two or three more games this season, and maybe one round in the playoffs. But in the very near future this move will prove to be the set-back that keeps this team from ever competing for the championship.
A very sad day!

Seriously?
Please back-up your thoughs with legit opinions. You will not have an offense if you pursue defensive minded perimeter players. Besides no perimeter defender other than Bryant, Wade, and LeBron can defend consistently with the rules currently in place. The days of Mario Ellie pushing in the backs of our guards is long gone!

yes we will watch and see
As Oden becomes the beast we need him to be if we ever have hopes of winning it all, all thanks to Hedo. He’ll teach Batum the ropes and relinquinsh the starter role in a few seasons. Provides a veteran presence in the locker room for our young guns. This move will prove to be the catalyst to more than one finals appearance.
watch much basketball Rick? Ever wonder how a guy like Dwight Howard scores 20 a night with absolutely zero post moves?

Have you seen his opponents PER when he plays the three, its like 13. Sure he got help from Howard, but its not that bad dude. Plus if they don’t spend this money now it gets absorbed by extension contracts to the guys they have on the roster already. I for one am totally looking forward to fourth quarters with Roy, Rudy, and Hedo on the floor. That’s gonna be sick
by 8volumesthick on Jul 3, 2009 6:03 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hedo did a good job on Pierce on the playoffs, and was no worse on Kobe and LeBron than anyone else
We just say a real test of Turk’s defense. He didn’t exactly ace the test, but rumors of his horrible defense seem somewhat exaggerated.
I certainly see Turk as a net positive. He addresses a lot of needs on the offensive end, and he is better than Trout as a team defender. Nic will be there for certain match-ups
by upper left corner on Jul 3, 2009 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Now that it's done, it's done.
Honestly it was getting to the point where there wasn’t any options out there better than Hedo in free agency. I don’t like the 5 year part, but we might as well have spent the money while we had the chance.
As for his defense, I don’t think he’s going to bring much improvement but he certainly doesn’t make us worse (so long as Batum continues to get time).
In all honesty, the most efficient offense in the NBA just got better, plain and simple.

Welcome to blazers edge! You will not be crushed when you see Hedo infuriating defenses because he is runnning the side pick and roll with Oden, to get Oden easy buckets.
And you will not be crushed when Roy is double teamed, dishes to Hedo and he has a 4 on 3 with Oden and Lamarcus in the post, and rudy on the wing to decide how he wants to crush the opponent. I was not on board with this decision earlier this week either, but I trust KP, and when you look at what Hedo will bring to us, this move is great I think.
by dario argento on Jul 3, 2009 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think we were all hesitant ...
… but, we also have to trust that the Pau Gasol-esque trade scenarios were not out there to throw exceptions and draft picks at so we could take on a superstar’s contract. If we upgrade at the point and remove the jam at SF through trade, and add a solid veteran with the mid-level or veteran’s minimum, how could we not consider this about as good as we could have expected for an off-season? I think next summer we will look back at this without regret. A lot may happen next summer … or a lot may not. Some teams will get better and some will get worse. The point is … we are in good hands. We have an owner and management who clearly will do what it takes to allow this team to succeed. If this project fails, I don’t expect KP to sit on his hands and say, “Oh, well. We’ll try again in five years.” We have our core. We also have someone in KP who could probably pull a rabbit out of a used condom. We’re fine. Relax and let’s see what we have.

This is just weird
I was against this move from the beginning, hated it, argued against it with anyone who would listen. But then when he “agreed in principle” I felt compelled to get behind him, I thought of all the good things he “could” bring to the team, how tall our starting 5 would be, how he does play decent defense because the numbers say so, even though my eyes say he doesn’t, you know pretty much all of the cup half-full and silver lining on a cloud thoughts I could have.
And now that he renaged, I am less relieved, and more upset that he didn’t sign on as a Blazer, but I have no idea why. I still believe in my heart that the Blazers will be better without him, but I can’t help feeling this way. Maybe it is because KP and Nate were so convincing about how Hedo was the perfect fit for this team, and they have done so much good for this team since they got here, they have almost done everything right. So what if I am wrong, and they were right?
This is the one time that I hope I am smarter than KP…

If it’s the money, then it had better be a lot of money. I did a quick calculation and figured they’d need to pay about $5m extra just to cover the tax spread, and that doesn’t even count the large sales tax in Toronto (versus zero in Portland).
If it’s because of the city, then you (and your wife, since you apparently want to blame it on her) are complete jerks for stringing us along, if only for a day.
Enjoy being on a lottery team next year, and those nice toasty warm winters in Toronto.

Despise Hedo
I can tell you I would have never have circled Portland vs. Toronto as a game in which I found it mandatory to order single game tickets. I plan on sitting 20 deep in the 300 level giving Hedo the “Darius Miles Treatment,” booing him every time he places his greasy Pizza Hut phalanges on the rock. If you suffer from a hearing impairment and cannot hear our boo’s you will notice our crew because we will be wearing " Hedo Turkoglu is an Indian Giver" t-shirts.
Blazers nation we cannot tolerate Hedo’s shenanigans no longer in the Rose Garden. Last year the ugly bank shot to beat us by one, and now he’s playing just like Iran flipping the script on a “democratic” election . How will you recieve Hedo as he steps foot on the court for the first time in the Rose Garden?

Rec'd
If i am able to go to any game this season it will have to be against Toronto. I simply can’t stand it when a player, and a player that IS ON THE DECLINE, signs just for money. I think when Toronto plays every single fan should throw pizza @ this backward fool. FRICK, now I wish we woulda went after Artest, and I hate to say that. Hey here we go. Lets talk to Ron Ron and offer him 3*23/25 I bet that would get him from the L*akers.
What's the differance of 3-6 mil? oh about 20+ more losses, and the chance to watch the only star leave by the end of the season. Suck it Hedo!

Suck it Hedo. You are ugly anyways.
Have fun losing on a Bosh-less craptastic team while we are crushing the opposition and making deep playoff runs. We will laugh at you, and you will say “man I should have signed with Portland.” And we will look down on you in shame. No Hedo, we aren’t angry at you…… just disappointed.

I respect his decision
Agreements in principle are not in any way binding. Sure, it’s a pretty drastic about-face, but NBA players—like it or not—are motivated by self-interest just as much as the rest of us. $6 million is a lot to leave on the table, regardless of your profession.
In response to the comments about being motivated by money, I think it is necessary to point out that Brandon Roy will (likely) soon ask for and receive a maximum contract. Will we then accuse him of being a money-hungry miscreant? I highly doubt it.
The fact of the matter is most athletes want to make as much money as they can. To them it is a matter of prudence; they never know when their assets may become devalued, or when some sort of career-ending injury may eliminate their ability to make a living. Hedo did what the vast majority of NBA players would have done. Only time will tell how that decision will affect both the Blazers and the Raptors.
Go Blazers.
