Who to trade? (With Poll)

Now that Turkoglu appears to be signing with Portland. Who do we trade? There obviously aren't enough minutes to go around for all of these guys. And who should we trade for? It's apparent that we could use an upgrade at PG. So, one option would be to trade one or two of these guys plus Blake or Bayless to get said PG.

Some possible targets

Kirk Hinrich

Devin Harris

Rajon Rondo

Andre Miller (Sign and trade with Philadelphia)

Jose Calderon

Mike Conley

Now here's a poll.

Here are some names of big man who KP could "target" with Outlaw's salary

Brian Scalabrine 3,413,793
Steven Hunter 3,696,000
Fabricio Oberto 3,800,000
Brian Cook 3,500,000
Luis Scola 3,284,667
Carl Landry 3,000,000
Marc Gasol 3,240,000
Kurt Thomas 3,800,000
Amir Johnson 3,666,667
Kevin Love 3,401,040
Matt Bonner 3,256,500
Kris Humphries 3,200,000

Keyon Dooling 3,564,000 (backup PG who shot 40% from distance, last year)

Same situation with Kurt Thomas in Milwaukee

I’m not sure if the Bucks would like Travis, but KT is the kind of veteran big man who would be good to have around, playing behind LMA and teaching Pendergraph and Cunningham the ropes

Plus Bibby is probably much more attainable than several players on that list.

MLB2PDX!!! (someday...)

by The Cactus Leaguer on Jul 3, 2009 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bibby's salary

was 19 mil last year

He’s have to agree to 12 then KP could deal Blake, Outlaw and Bayless for MIke

then we’d have worse perimeter defense and no backup PG

Or, they could take Blake or Bayless out of the deal and add Przybilla?

Do you get the picture? Now that the cap-space is gone, you’ll have to lower your “sights” on which players are “attainable”

Keep Blake. He’s the spot-up 3 this team still needs to spread the floor

Bibby plays no D at all

I don’t know how people ignore that. He would slaughtered by every pg we play. I don’t want Miller, Calderon or Nash either for mostly the same reason.

by KitIsh on Jul 3, 2009 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Again, you are ignoring my point...

… which is, Bibby should be on that list as much as the others, although I would personally rather have Hinrich, Harris, or Rondo.

by The Cactus Leaguer on Jul 3, 2009 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't want

Bibby, Miller, Kidd, Conley, Sessions, Calderon, or Nash. Only 3 choices I like are Rondo, Harris, and Hinrich, in that order. All 3 of those are “rumored” to be available, but I don’t think we have what it takes to get Rondo from Boston, so that leaves Harris and Hinrich. Harris might be able to be had for a package of Blake, Outlaw and Bayless +picks and cash if needed, or for a package of Outlaw, Rudy and Bayless + cash and picks if needed. I would do either, but I would rather keep Rudy over keeping Blake.

As for Hinrich I would do Blake and Outlaw for him, and I think they might look at that as a good deal for him, but that is unsure now that Gordon is gone for sure.

by usmcr3049 on Jul 3, 2009 12:28 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think the deal still makes sense for Chicago

The thing that makes Blake and Trout so valuable is that they’re both very solid young players and yet they’re also partially guaranteed expiring deals. So, Chicago might like Hinrich, but his salary is still too much to pay for a back up PG. Better to swap him for a solid back up in Blake, a very good bench scorer in Trout, and the potential for even more cap space in the FA bonanza of 2010 – when Chicago could be a major player because of the desirability of the city.

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

I don't know why everyone is down on Conley

I don’t think he is really available, but you never know with Memphis. Conley played well 2nd half of last year. He shot 40% from 3 for the season, he can D up and he doesn’t need the ball on offense. He’s the right age, and he would fit the culture. Sounds good to me.

by KitIsh on Jul 3, 2009 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The appeal...

of a Kirk for Blake and Outlaw trade before was to clear room to resign BG. Now that the Bulls don’t have a true sg (Salmons is more of a sf) on the roster that trade is pointless. The Blazers would have to include Rudy in a Hinrich deal now. He is apparently unhappy and his mins will most likely be reduced. I know everyone has a man crush on him but why do you need him riding the pine. A Hinrich plus pick for Blake, Rudy, Outlaw or filler makes much more sense from the Bulls point of view.

by ronmexibull on Jul 3, 2009 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Blazers could toss in Claver and/or Freeland and/or picks to sweeten the pot

I don’t think Blake/Trout would require a TON more to land the captain, though. I’d rather just give up a pick or two (even a first next year) and keep the Euros. Toss Koponen in, by all means, if the Blazers don’t renounce his rights to sign Hedo. (The Finn is useless.)

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

by KP Corleone on Jul 3, 2009 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am sure

the Bulls would want Rudy, but I don’t think the Blazers would give him up for Hinrich as they would for Harris. Harris is younger and cheaper, signed for longer, and a better player than Hinrich, eventhough I think KP likes them both, and will try to trade for both.

If the Bulls really want to get Wade next year then they won’t want Rudy anyways, especially if the rumor about him complaining about PT is true, (I don’t believe it is) as he will just start complaining after Wade is brought in, (IF he is brought in).

I think the Blazers will have to give up a bit more than just Blake +salary cap relief like it was previously thought, but Blake + Outlaw, would allow the Bulls to move Salmons to the 2, play outlaw at the 4, and have a back up vet and the 1 and 2 in Blake. And with both Blake and Outlaw expiring next summer the Bulls will have the option to bring them back or not if they choose.

Yeah. Those three have about equal salary to Devin Harris. I think NJ would consider that deal because Rudy is young and popular and will become a fan favorite, and Blake and Outlaw are both FA’s next offseason, which will make it easier for them to jump into the Lebron/Bosh/Wade race.

NJ just traded VC for Courtney Lee and drafted Terrence Williams. Plus with CDR back they are pretty set on young wings. I’d give it a less than 1% chance of happening.

Batum has got to go

Too many small forwards

  • Webster is injured and untradeable
  • Outlaw is the glue guy of the team and best friends with just about everyone
  • Batum is just a rookie that was drafted in the 20’s, all Portland has to do to replace him is pay $3 million next draft to some cheap team and draft someone else

by KP Corleone on Jul 3, 2009 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Chicago could get way under the cap

Via Storyteller’s contract info for the Summer of 2010:
Kirk Hinrick 9,000,000
Luol Deng 11,345,000
John Salmons (ETO) 5,808,000
Derrick Rose 5,546,160
Tyrus Thomas (QO) 6,236,806
Joakim Noah 3,128,536
James Johnson 1,428,000
Taj Gibson 931,400
1 round pick: ?

Total: 43,423,902 (+ cost of first round pick)

That alone is enough to add a near max player, but it’s close. However, if Chicago is a destination for free agents, they would certainly be interested in making more room.

Blake + Outlaw for Hinrich drops their total salary to 34,423,902 (+1 first rounder) in 2010.

Not extending the QO to Thomas drops their salary to 28,187,096 in 2010.

John Salmons may figure that he’s worth more than 5.8 million and opt out, dropping their salary to 22,379,096. (+1 rd.) That’s just enough to sign two max free agents to pair with Rose, Noah and Deng.

Find a way out from under Deng in 2010 and they have a mere 11 million (+1 rd.) in salary committed for the biggest free agent market in years. But this last step might be very difficult.

If this is their plan, Hinrich could very well be available right now. That, and in 2009, they field a fairly competitive team with Rose, Salmons, Deng, Thomas, Noah, Miller, Blake and Outlaw. Plus they have opportunity for their new draft picks to grow as well. I think it would work out well for both teams involved.

we might have to sweeten the pot some, but I’d still be SHOCKED if hinrich isn’t traded this year…dude, If I was the Bulls GM, I’d be trying to lose games bc until Wade or a FA signs, you might as well shoot for a higher draft pick…

getting rid of Hinrich would certainly help them lose games

A deal can be made with NJ

that doesn’t include Rudy,

Blake, Outlaw, and Bayless + picks and cash works under the CBA. But who knows if NJ would do that deal, I think they might be interested myself, it gives them more cap room next year, and a good young PG on a rookie deal. It would depend on if they can get a better deal from someone else.

bayless can now get more minutes because either Roy or Hedo can initiate the offense letting Bayless be unleashed. Ou rhtree ballhandlers last year were Blake, Roy and Sergio, this year you can subtract Sergio and add Hedo and let Bayless learn on the job without having fewer than 2 ball handlers on the floor at any one time.

by TrentEdwardsHoF2018 on Jul 3, 2009 1:51 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

In theory I think he still is available and both teams could benefit from it, although the BG trade really reduced that window.

And the Bulls rather need one more SG because Salmons is more of a forward. Hence all the talk of the Bulls fans about Rudy.

I would assume KP targets Miller in a sign & trade. Maybe Sessions, but it seems to be about veterans.

by Norsktroll on Jul 3, 2009 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rudy is too much to pay, I think

I don’t blame the Bulls fans for asking for him, but I doubt that deal would go through. Rudy was arguably better than Hinrich last year – and he’s certainly younger and more athletic, with more potential.

I say Blake/Trout/picks/Euros should do the trick.

With Turk and Roy doing most of the ball handling and creating

Blake’s 3-point shooting is a better fit than ever for this team. If we make a trade for a PG (Harris isn’t coming) he should be as good or better 3-point shooter than Blake and that limits the choices.

by two4larue on Jul 3, 2009 3:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree, Turk will play a lot of PF behind LMA and

also with LMA at center when Nate wants to go “small”. Turk could play 12 minutes at PF when LMA is resting, and maybe another 6 minutes with LMA at center. Then Turk plays about 18 minutes at SF, leaving 30 minutes for Batum (20 min) and Roy (10 min) at SF. That opens up 28-30 minutes for Rudy at SG.

PG – Blake/Bayless 40, Roy 8
SG – Roy 18, Rudy 30
SF – Turk 18, Batum 20, Roy 10
PF – LMA 30, Turk 18
C – Oden/Pryz 42, LMA 6

That’s 36 minutes each for Roy, LMA, and Turk, and 30 for Rudy. Oden gets as many minutes as he can stay on the floor. It’s a good 9-man rotation with time for Bayless and Batum to develop. If Martell comes back (I’m not sure he can) he can use Batum’s minutes to prove himself and establish his value prior to the Feb trade deadline. If we pick up a veteran PF in a trade that makes the standard rotation Turk’s increased time at SF would eat into Batum or Rudy’s time.

by BlazerFanSince1970 on Jul 3, 2009 2:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

you're cutting into Joel and Greg's minutes

And only Oden and Przybilla can cut into their own minutes, by fouling too much

There certainly shouldn’t be any ‘plan’ to play Greg/Joel only 42 mpg combined heading into any ballgame

When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Jul 3, 2009 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

We will have to see how it plays out

but it was my impression that Nate went to a smaller line up with LMA at center for about 5-6 minutes a game last year because he wanted a smaller unit on the floor, not just because of foul trouble. But if Oden improves (with better quickness) this year that may no longer be true. In that case Turk, Batum and Rudy (because he plays when Roy moves to SF) would be fighting over those 6 minutes in my estimate above. Not a big deal if those minutes are spread out about evenly.

I think a problem occurs if Rudy starts getting less than 28 minutes a game. I suspect that would be his discontent threshold next year. I would like to see Rudy another full year to see how he develops after last year’s introduction to the NBA. I expect improved defense because he is fairly quick and defense can be learned. I think he can also shoot a higher percentage on 3’s because he should get more open looks with Trout gone and Turk distributing. I would hope he can create his own shot better and knock down some mid-range jumpers, but that’s a lot more iffy. Ironically, if Rudy only improves his D and ups his 3-point shooting percentage a couple of points, he will probably stay a Blazer for his 3rd year, but if he also shows some moves off the dribble and a better midrange jump shot he may be too good to keep – i.e. he will not be happy as a 28-30 minute 6th man and we may have to trade him for a player that fits better because we won’t be able to get him the minutes he wants and he would become very valuable in a trade.

by BlazerFanSince1970 on Jul 3, 2009 6:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Do we need a devin harris anymore?

Assuming we keep Hedo, it seems like getting a PG that is best creating off the dribble would add too many people who need the ball. Kirk is a good shooter and defender, which was the roll of the SF before we got Hedo. We need one of those types in our offense now more than another person creating off the drive. If we got Devin Harris we would have three of those plus LMA in the starting line up would be wasting talent. In that line up someone is bound to not be getting enough touches. If we can trade Trout and Blake for Kirk our bench is still bayless, rudy, batum/webster, pendergraph, joel. We would have to give up at least one or two of those to get a devin harris or rondo.

Now that we have Hedo, get Kirk

Those are the only two names that are worth mentioning, if they're gonna bring in a starting PG

At this point I think Nate/KP like Blake/Bayless, so this talk could be moot

And to get Rudy enough minutes, I think they are going to have to pair him up with Brandon in the backcourt, for at least 10 mpg

So, Travis may be moving for one more big man, somewhere in the 3.6 mil/year range

When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

trade

Rudy, Steve, Travis and 1st rd. picks the next 2 yrs. for Devin Harris. Pendergraph at backup power forward and we’re set for a title run in 2009-2010.
