As part of a season-long celebration of the team's 40th anniversary, the Portland Trail Blazers will return to the Memorial Coliseum on October 14, highlighting an eight-game preseason schedule announced today.
For the first time, the Trail Blazers will return to the venue they called home from 1970-95. Portland will host the Phoenix Suns, reuniting the two teams that played in the final NBA game at the Coliseum on Tuesday, May 2, 1995.

Is the regular season starting earlier than usual?
Last exhibition game is Oct. 22. Typically the regular season begins on or around Halloween. I don’t recall there being a week gap between the preseason and reg. season.
You bet. I'll bet. Can you say, "caricature"?
There usually is a week between, or five days ish.
First game this year is on October 27th, a Tuesday, with rumored games being Cleveland and Boston, Portland and Houston, and Lakers versus someone.
Last year we started on October 28th. Usually start on the last Tuesday of October.
I love that building!
But, it needs to be put out of it’s misery…
Why not play all our preseason games there this year before we tear the place down?

Alotta History for Old Guys Like Me...
Home of the 12666 fans… I watched alot of games there back in the day. Great old building with a lot of stories to tell.
I don't feel that old...
But I was around for many of those games too. I think it was 12888 max capacity, but pretty darn close. Anyway, I miss how loud that place used to get back in the late 80’s/early 90’s. Totally agree that although the RG is cool, it has never been quite as loud as the MC used to be. I would say the introductions before this year’s first playoff game was pretty close though, so that’s a good sign.
Proud Blazers Edge lurker since 2007
Original seating capacity for basketball was 12,666
They expanded it to 12,888 in 77 or 78 I think. It’s on the wiki somewhere when they did it
Blazers win!
The MC was a wonderful place to watch basketball in its day.
I much preferred the smaller MC to the Rose Garden when we made the move in 1995. We obviously needed more seats but the intimacy of the MC was gone. I wonder how they are mapping the season ticket holder seat locations from the RG to MC for this one game? Or is the MC pre-season game not part of the season ticket package this year?

I don't hate the Coliseum...
I have some nice memories from the place-Buckaroo hockey games during their hay day, Winter Hawks games, my high school graduation, Blazer season tickets there for 12 years, seeing the Blazers at 50-10 there the night Walton went down, etc. However, I’d be a lot happier if the game that’s scheduled there was a tribute to a building that’s about to be torn down in favor of a shiny and cool new baseball park. The building has had a great run. Let’s get on with building a new ball park in the best possible location-the Coliseum site.
Those of you who like baseball-even those of you who couldn’t care less but want Portland to have as much fun stuff to do as possible-please contact the current mayor and tell him to build the park there. I don’t live in Pdx, I’m in Hillsboro. No body in power in Pdx cares what I think. I hope they care what those of you who live in Pdx think.
I hope the Blazers didn’t have their fingers in sabotaging the plan to put the ballpark on the Coliseum site as has been rumored. If they did, shame on them!!

Hate?
The building is obsolete, for sure, but I have fond memories of watching Blazer games there as a kid. It’s where I became a fan. It’s a great idea to play a preseason game there. If nothing else, it gives people another look at the building and aids in the on-going discussions of what to do with it.

From the Blazers’ press release:
"We are excited to have an opportunity to host a ‘turn-back-the-clock’ game at the Memorial Coliseum," Trail Blazers President Larry Miller said. "It will be very nostalgic for many Trail Blazers fans, and for others a chance to see the team play in its original venue for the first time."
Uh, yeah… right before he added: “… before we blow that thing up and built us a couple lame theme bars and a Fuddruckers.”
Whew!
I was going to be really cranky when you said lame theme bars, but when you said Fuddruckers that made it all better.
Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you've got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.
I'm so going to that game
I only ever went once to a game at the MC, so I want to go just for one last time
Blazers win!
How will that game work for tickets?
Season ticket holders get tickets to preseason games, but there are more season ticket holders than there are seats in the MC. So do STHs get screwed out of one of our preseason games, or just certain ones (300 level), or…….? Because I would be pissed if I didn’t get tickets to one of my games because they moved the game to an arena 500 feet away from the Rose Garden.
I want Greg Oden to tuck me in at night and tell me stories about the old times
I called and they said we dont get them, we have to buy them
M 80- So what does Portland give up? Big D- Nothing, Pritchard is such a genius that teams just give him players for free. (Comments from Blog a Bull on July 9, 2009)
If they throw in the seat and a free swing of the wrecking ball, I’m in.

MC...the "Highlight" of the preseason schedule?
Is that because this is the very last even that is ever going to be held in that dump? I’m with Dwight Jaynes on this one. Rip that rusty old pile down and put a ball park in it’s place!
If I've said it once, I've said it a million times: I heart Portland!!!
Sweet!
I’ll be there Oct. 9th. Any other LA Bedgers coming? That reminds me, Bassy’s gonna be there. Awesome!

seattle ?
I could have sworn I heard several months back that we were going to play an exhibition game in seattle. Wonder what happened with that
How did you guys win that?

I'm wondering
if they got feedback from Seattle that indicated it would NOT be a good thing this year…..

will the game at memorial coliseum
be accompanied by retro jerseys and court design?
bayless leaves over my dead body
I'm not sure the players would go for the retro-shorts though.

The only team to wear retro shorts in retro lengths was the L*kers vs. the Celtics in 07-08.
Every other team wears current length shorts in the old-school designs

Opening game is also leaked: October 27 at Rose Garden vs. Rockets
I should so show up at the Rose Garden with a Chase Budinger jersey, as well as a sign that reads ...
“Daryl Morey > Kevin Pritchard” on it. Regarding Budinger, the dude should show up at The Moore Theatre on 9/24/2009; he looks stunningly like a taller version of the late, yet nevertheless still great Layne Staley.
I, however, doubt Budinger has the pipes of William DuVall, who looks like a combination of Jimi Hendrix and Lenny Kravitz.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.
the memorial coliseum now stands as a monument
to our beloved city’s lack of vision and foresight, as well as our fondness for mediocrity and red tape. This year we had the golden opportunity to make the rose quarter something more than what it is, a year round destination and we are talking about making it into a velodrome arena? How about a curling facility, or an archery range. Gotta say the Blazers and the city really botched this one. Hate to see what happens if MLS goes out of business.

hard to say if they get a new facility
by Tyler Durrden on Jul 29, 2009 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions
I meant if MLS folds.
The Coliseum is the equivalent of a 4th refrigerator in a hoarder’s house. Only inexplicable sentimentality keeps it around.
yeah I just think if a brand new facility is built out of town, and the team moves, why would they move back and abandon a brand-new facility

+100
Best analogy yet I’ve heard regarding Memorial Coliseum, well played good sir.
I actually think we should just burn down the whole Rose Quarter and move the team to Lents Park because that is a great idea for any sports franchise, and who wants to revitalize a crucial downtown district anyway? The hookers and tweakers have been forced out for way too long in the Rose Quarter, let em have it back!
Actually the velodrome is on hold
Because a vocal lobby of Quidditch players is looking to turn into a full scale Quidditch arena.
We don’t need no water, let the mother burn
I hope I rec'd you...
I love how you put this. The powers that be have managed to sully the history and memory of the Coliseum not by saving it, but by condemning it and the city to to a lousy fate. The place will either continue to stand as a deteriorating dump while the city’s “decision makers” haggle over what not to do with the site, or convert it to a use that’s far less cool than a new ball park would be.
I want to see
forget who he is playing for and lob to Rudy for alley-oop dunk.
Maybe if we can get him to hang out with Damon before the game…

Two takeaways:
1. Memorial Coliseum… dope. I don’t know how they’ll work seating for it, since all the people with ticket packages can’t possibly fit in Memorial coliseum, but still dope.
2. The first preseason game is against Sacramento AGAIN. To me, that translates to an entire season’s worth of Blazer/ Harlem Globtrotter highlight reel material on day 1! Recall from the first preseason game against the Kings last year:
- Rudy Fernandez dishing out the between-the-defender’s-legs bounce pass assist.
- The first of many Greg Oden thunderdunks.
- The inaugural flight of Nic Batum.
- Victory. Frankly, we murdered Sacramento’s season before it even started – they lost by 30 in humiliating fashion and never really recovered.
Watch one of the team’s highlight reels from last season, and half the plays came in the first preseason game against the Kings. So excited.
yeah
I watched that game and thought we were going to have a 90 win season. It was crazy. And then we played LA, half the team left the floor in a body bag and I thought we were going to have a 90 loss season…

Just found this. Read the comments. I can picture so many of these plays. Can’t believe I didn’t think of Rudy’s reverse alley-oop layup.
If I'd known LA would go on to win the title, that would have made me feel a bit better.
Still can’t say that about the Celtics game in Boston and game 1 of the playoffs – the 3 “we are not ready” games.
They could sell first-half and second-half tickets.
It would be fun watching the ushers chase 12,666 people out of the MC and seat another 12,666 during halftime.
Some of those 12.666 had no seat. There were marked locations for standing room tickets.
Anyone remember how many tickets were for standing room?

I want to say
12,800 something…then there were all of the “photographers” who would sneak in and “squat” along the baseline
there used to be (probably still are) bench seats at the top of the center aisle, I sat on one of those to watch the Blazers beat the World Champion NY Knicks (114-96) back in ’70.
My first NBA game…that was a pretty big deal

I'm pretty certain the original 12,666 included the standing room tickets.
I just don’t remember exactly how many standing spots there were around the concourse level of the bowl. They were individually numbered on the wall.
My first time in the MC was in 1960-61 to see my first hockey game. It was the first season of the Portland Buckaroos. I have never forgotten that I actually asked a stranger sitting next to me “how many quarters are there in a hockey game?”. Hey, I was just kid.
I remember in 1970 Harry Glickman set up Blazer/Buckaroos double headers to get Portland hockey fans to come see a Blazer game. One ticket got you into both games. (I don’t remember if those were pre-season or regular season games though.) We’ve come a long way from having to throw-in a free basketball game to get Portland hockey fans to watch the Blazers.

I saw a preseason scrim @ Cleveland last year. The smaller the building, the bigger the players look (even though the thing is a musty dump now). I’d like to see them break out these duds:

it just didn’t make sense that they could give us all tickets for it..
plus.. they usually give us three preseason games if i remember right

just what do you think the RG is?
B-ball and Hockey, plus could use it for indoor soccer, arena football, etc.

MC
The only way that I will be happy with this MC night is if they paint the key white!
I think this is a great idea if they make the setting as if it were 1990.
Great memories for me. I still get chills as I’m heading into the RG and I have to pass the Glass sidding!
