KP? comment on State of Blazers
The article is okay and over a week old , But I notticed a comment from "KP".

Hello to all Blazer fans, and fellow NBA fans.... I usually read these sites, and dont respond ever. But I feel I need to clear the situation regarding Brandons contract. There is no doubt that we want Brandon to be a Blazer for his entire career. Brandon has said he wants to play here for his career. For those of you that know Brandon, it is not about total money. He plays to win, and he wants to win multiple chmapionships, and be a contending team every year. I clearly laid out what that looks like. If we pay him and LaMarcus max dollars for the next five years, they will be using 60% of our cap space. With the assumption that the salary cap goes down further next year, if we sign them to MAX deals this summer, they will be using 70% of our cap space. I walked them through the history of teams that do this and their inability to compete for championships. (Orlando circa 2000 is the perfect example). I can not surround them with 13 complementary players with only 30% of my cap space left. I pointed out the successful teams and how their stars have made some concessions to win. (San Antonio, Detroit, 90's Chicago. At the end of the day, does it really matter if you were paid $160 million during your NBA career, or $150 million? I would challenge you to ask Kevin Garnett, or Ray Allen, or Pau Gasol, anyone who has tasted championship victory. With winning and winning championships comes more exposure and endorsements. I would argue that those dollars outweight the few NBA dollars you sacrifice. Lastly, Brandon Roy is an MVP talent and natural leader. You don't win MVP's overnight as your winning reputation has to build. I am a huge fan of Kobe, and he has been a great great player in our league for years, and you see how much he had to accomplish to win his first (and last) MVP. Just kidding, laker fans, wanted to have fun with a respected rival. I am a huge fan of the NBA and love talking hoops. -KP
That honestly sounds like it really could be KP. Do you agree. Either way, the comment has some very good points that I hope KP is making to Roy about salary sacrifice for winning.

Yeah theres no way.
Why would he post on a website where he could so easily be impersonated

While I am a very big fan of Brandon Roy as he is a legit star who hits game-winning shots BUT he is still below the tier of the truly elite swingmen of the nba such as Dwyane Wade or Kobe or Lebron. He is in the Danny Granger, Kevin Durant, Manu Tier (Manu’s lowered ranking is due to his re-occuring ankle injury)
I’m sorry, I must just be a Blazer homer, but Brandon is in a higher tier than Manu and Granger. I feel like he is in the same tier as Kobe, Lebron and Wade but that’s probably just my homer side speaking. And with this guy saying “Manu’s lowered raning due to blah blah blah” does that mean he was in the same tier with Kobe, Bron, and Wade?

OBVIOUSLY this is not KP
But I do like the point the speaker is trying to make.

It can't be KP.

yeah...
or use the word “kid” or the phrase “he’s a great kid”. :)

No GM would ever post about a contract negotiation.
Plus the impersonator’s argument isn’t even sensible. We will go way over the cap space limit after resigning Rudy, LMA, Greg, and eventually others. The cap limit is not a hard limit in the NBA.

yeah, but there was the news about the Vulcans wanting to "break even"
and who knows where Paul Allen’s health will be, in 5 years?
I agree that this wasn’t KP, but “we” could soon be dealing with an economic reality that Blazer fans haven’t had to think about since the days of Larry Weinberg. The late ‘70s-early ’80s era wasn’t much fun, watching “our” guys leaving town because there wasn’t enough coin to keep them all around

this could also explain
why the team likes to hang onto their rookie PGs for 3 years (Jack, Sergio, now Bayless) until their rookie contracts have expired, even when it doesn’t seem like they’re the right “fit” basketball-wise?
You’ve got to have some affordable contracts down at the bottom of the roster. You also notice that KP likes to draft Euros in the late first round and stash ’em overseas? That has helped keep the payroll down, as well…

Good point
The Blazer rookies that don’t quite work out (break into the top 8 Blazers) can always be cashed in for future draft picks when they come to the end of the rookie contract. Other picks can just be straight up purchased to keep things rolling until one of the rookies do break though. Not a bad strategy as long as you don’t draft total flops. But even then Telfair was turned into Roy by picking up the Cost of Raef’s final year.

Do you thing Sergio had more value?
I certainly don’t. And I don’t buy the argument that he had a high value after his rookie year. He was a late draft pick who showed a little potential. Those guys are a dime a dozen. Just look at this years second round for proof.

Don't you think there must be something more going on with Roy's contract other than
just fighting over whether he gets a 4 year or 5 year guaranteed deal? They offered Turk a 5 year deal. How bad would the PR be if Turk had taken that and then the Klingons tried to stiff Roy out of a 5th year? I gotta think Roy wants a 3rd year opt out or something like that, and that’s what they are fighting about?

probably
and I prefer “Ferengi” as a ST nickname for the Vulcans. Klingons have too much honor to be “doing” Roy like this…he has the heart of a warrior, after all

I've gotta think
that the challenge in negotiations is regarding the later years being player option or team option.
by lurtsman on Jul 29, 2009 12:06 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
To go more in depth
I’d imagine the team is happily offering 5 years at a lower than max deal, and roy is saying that if he plays for less, he needs to know the team will compete, so he wants opt out options after year 3 and year 4 in case he doesn’t like the way the team is being handled.
