In memoriam: Overrated Blazers assets

  1. Raef LaFrentz 2010 "Super-"Expiring Contract: Fiercely debated at the deadline, not used in a deal.
  2. $3 mil trade exception from the Ruffin-Diogu deal: Renounced without fanfare to get under the cap and make an offer to Millsap/Miller. It went away so silently that many fans and even media (Brian Wheeler, Dwight Jaynes, ...) still thought we had it this week.
  3. Trading up in the draft for a package around Sergio: It likely wasn't the best offer KP ever got for him, but 5 spots in the second round was a bit less than most fans expected to get for the flashy young Spaniard (and cash). Similar with Channing. Like players before him he just went away without a deal.
  4. Unguaranteed last contract years for Blake and Outlaw: Fans dreamed up deals that would require the additional cap space, or trading them to a team looking for financial relief that would immediately waive one or both enabling the Blazers to potentially pick them back up later. All possible in theory, yet the team never intended to renounce them.
  5. New hot candidate: Cap holds of unsigned draft picks under contract in Europe (Claver, Freeland, Koponen) come off the cap during regular season, saving ca. $2.5 million in cap space (fits into the idea of actually renouncing them during the offseason). Will this be the key to a lopsided trade later?

1. Became the cap space to sign Miller, so it was useful anyway
2. Same as 1
3. That was KP proving he’s a good guy who cares about his people. Sergio was his personal bet, didn’t pan out because Sergio and Nate are opposites.
4. They are expirings now, and their positions are fairly well covered
5. Not only renounced, but they can also be traded

We can still make a good trade with those assets, getting a Hinrich, a package of Battier + Scola, a Gerald Wallace, who knows, but the assets are still there

Not with those assets

We might be able to make a decent trade but we cannot get Gerald Wallace, Hinrich or Battier/Scola with those assets. I would love to be proven wrong but I just don’t see that happening.

But does confirm Norsktroll’s point, these assets are overrated.

It’s not that they were wasted (the trade exception maybe, it could have been used on draft night when we were still over the cap). Just what great things we could get for them in return was overstated by fans and sometimes even the team, and discussed sheer endlessly. The hot new topic KP brought up in the last two interviews I have seen was the “euro cap holds going away during the regular season”, which also was discussed already here and elsewhere, and probably Tom Penn stressed that topic in discussions with Pritchard. It remains to be seen if that cap space will be used in a trade.

Assets create possibilities

You will never use all the possibilities.

It’s like a grocery store stocking fresh vegetables. In order to have enough variety and supply to meet demand, you are going to have to overstock, and some will go unsold and spoil. That doesn’t mean they didn’t potentially have value to you. A lot of them did have value to you.

It’s the same with evaluating draft picks. You can look at all the “mistakes”, but what about getting Jerome Kersey with a late draft pick? Drexler was one of the top 50 of all time, and he was picked what, sixth I think? And so on.

Back to these assets, you are glad to have them, because they may be what the customer wants, whether it be our new $2 million in cap space after season start, or Euro rights, or whatever. You want to be able to provide things that will part the customer from his money (or in this case, his valuable player). He walks into your store, and if he sees hardly anything on the shelves, he’ll go spend elsewhere. But if he sees a little cap space here, a draft pick there, a Euro over there, a young talent in the corner, whatever, you increase the chance he’ll see what he wants.

When I rule the world, everyone will know how to use Excel.

RT: Drexler was one of the top 50 of all time, and he was picked what, sixth I think?

I want to say 13-14, the Blazers made the playoffs 9 out of 10 years in the ’80s. Other than ’84 they were drafting in the ’teens. Inman-Buckwalter did a nice job of rebuilding on the fly. (Especially considering the Bowie pick and the Vandeweghe trade…)

When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

What is Quick talking about?

Twice in the last couple of days Quick has reported that the Blazers are “waiting” for league approval that would free up the Euro cap dollars after the start of the season. I don’t get that. They come off the cap according the CBA. There isn’t any question about it (that I can find) and there’s no need to “petition the league” for this to happen. So what is Quick talking about? Are the Blazers really petitioning the league for cap space approval on something else (Miles related maybe???), or are they asking for approval to use the cap space now on a deal that wouldn’t be effective until the season starts? Something isn’t right in Quick’s report.

As you can see Norsk ...

… Blazer assets for use in trade proposals are like zombies. You have to shoot them in the head to really kill them.

In anticipation

you should add “nearly every young guy on this team” to the list.

Add Bayless to the list

Pre-summer league 2009 Bayless was very overrated. I’m glad people actually paid attention to how mediocre he was running the offense in summer league. The same reason he could not break into the lineup last season. If we get a good offer for him, we should definitely trade him.

by goblazer1 on Jul 28, 2009 11:37 AM PDT reply actions

Ah, got it

We should wait to point out how overvalued he was until after he is gone. But seriously, how about Sebastian Telfair? At least we tricked Ainge into believing he was as good as we thought he was.

renounce one of them

he just signed a new european contract and kopenan just isn’t the right answer. but whats the point of cap space when you can’t use it, have a plan first KP

by StocktonNEP on Jul 28, 2009 12:37 PM PDT reply actions

My list of renouncing order:

1. Koponen – He’ll probably never be an NBA caliber player.
2. Freeland – He may be good enough to be good backup, after his 5-year deal.
3. Claver – He’s NBA ready right now, it would be great adding him when we can’t find anything useful in a draft and can’t sign free agents over the MLE.

Nicely laid out Norsk.

Blazers fans tend to think that we always have what every team wants. I think we found out this summer that we DO NOT have the upper hand over teams like we used to think. I do think a trade is coming before the deadline though.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
