Batum Leads France with 15pts, 5 Assists against the Czech Republic
Pretty nice stat line for Nic!
Does anyone have additional info on this game? Like, when was it played?? I started searching for the box score when I saw a story about Parker hurting his ankle against Austria... I was surprised to see that France has played two games and yet no reports from our European Blazer fans.

Here are box scores for the first three of France's games
An even more impressive stat line against Belgium:
by PoliSam on Jul 27, 2009 8:17 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
The line is more impressive.
But it doesn’t read like he is the number one player on the team. He drew no fouls and had only two assists. A very efficient game, but he was playing off of someone it looks like.
In the Czech game his stat line reads like the guy who the game goes through. The team’s star.

So how is that any different from him playing on the Blazers?

I'm not sure that was being addressed at all
However, there’s a difference between a person putting up stats when they’re open and a person putting up stats when covered. If he’s doing that covered, that makes him even more of an impressive player than if he was just hitting wide open shots.
It’s very cool either way.
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

Tony Parker is out with a minor leg and ankle sprain, and he mostly played SG in a backcourt with Nando De Colo
I put most of the reports about that once per day on Twitter and in the JD ;)

the junk drawer?
c’mon! Are you saying Nic is junk? Or, only the junk drawer denizens deserve your knowledge?

I'd say these reports are worthy of being out of the junk drawer
be a fanshot if nothing else.

after all
I really don’t read the JD that much, so why should I and others like me miss out?

Never realize Turiaf was French... can we still get him?
Nice to see Batum doing good. Seems like he might be able to become a Scottie Pippen like player some day…. at least I hope.

Ronny's contract is a little bit more $ than Travis'
4.1 mil versus 3.6 mil
So right now, the can’t be swapped straight up, not without adding Bayless, Rudy or Batum’s contracts to the deal
But when the Euros (Claver, Koponen, Freeland) come off the “books” in September KP will have a little cap-space available to make an Outlaw for Turiaf deal. (Of course, that’s assuming Nelson likes what Travis would bring to his team versus Ronny)
When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

Am I reading that box score right?
It looks like he drew five fouls while only committing two of his own. And five assists in Europe is like ten over here.
And forum favorite Ronny Turiaf? Zero minutes. Hmm.

You are reading it correctly.
Nic’s big problem was actually making those free throws he was given.
After reading through the OP’s play by play link it looks sort of like Batum controlled the game. Sort of like he was on a different level than the rest.

It was a test tournament in Strasbourg last week, against inferior competition
The qualifying phase begins August 5, against Italy and Finland (Petteri) one home and one away game each. Only the winner advances, in a decisive game against the winner of the other group (Belgium whom France already beat, Bosnia Herzegovina, Portugal). The big obstacle is likely Italy, and that’s where the national team coach (who happens to be Nic’s old team coach) trusts Nic to stop the best man. He also tries to put him on the floor at the same time with Diaw, but doesn’t see Diaw as a 4 like many US coaches. He wants to use him mainly as a 3, so there is a slight overlap with Nic. It might change for the qualifier, since the Bulls are not willing to give Noah free for that round so far.

If you know so much,
How did you let me beat you to posting the link? What else do you know that you aren’t telling us???

To recap a few things
- A Frech reporter praised his “polyvalence et d’intelligence de jeu”. Sounds nice. Nic claims he added 8 kilos (17.5 pounds) last year.
- Nicolas: “My role will be to give all on defense and take my responsibility on offense. No witchcraft/sorcery.” (meaning: I do what the coach asks from me, nothing fancy.)
- His coach was satisfied with Nic’s performance, only said once he looked better on offense in training than in the game after the match against Austria. Good physical condition, makes smart choices. Likely in starting 5 for the qualification games.
- In other news, Victor Claver is on the Spanish national team, Sergio is not.
I made a fanshot on Blogabull about the performance of Noah since they don’t get much offseason news. On BE as said above I just sprinkled it in the JD and over Twitter, the real qualifiers will be more interesting.

again...
I have to chide you for keeping your intel in the junk drawer. Some of prefer not to get lost in the junk…

It’s funny, but most topics of Blazer interest get cross-posted or even discussed there. Some good posters keep almost exclusively there from time to time. And many short notes come up. It’s a big one-stop shop. Mixed with junk.

LOTS of junk
and shameless flirtations or worshiping of the bedge females.
Be nice if the good stuff was elsewhere.

This Pietrus is actually the brother of Mikael Pietrus, who doesn’t play due to a wrist injury

Oh haha
Based on the box score I assumed it was the same. Well, if they can qualify for the Euro Championships or whatever is next, won’t Mikael be ready to go?

He might be ready to go again, but it looks like the Magic and Bulls want to keep their players out of it. Some other teams likely too.

Signs Alexis Ajinca (Bobcats) is not that good: He averaged 4 points and 5 minutes in the test games for France
Instead the coach mostly went with Noah, Petro and big men playing in Europe. Also not much to see of Turiaf.
Nic averaged 28 minutes and 13.7 points. Although his focus was at least as much on the defensive end.
by Norsktroll on Jul 27, 2009 12:24 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Oops, Ajinca only played one game, so it’s not really an average
