Thoughts about RUDY

I'm curious what everyone thinks about Rudy's ceiling. I think he has the POTENTIAL to be a Manu. Thoughts?

1st off, thanks for making this a fanshot instead of a 75 word fan post

secondly, rudy’s style of play is completly diferent than manu’s. manu is a slasher, rudy works primarily off the ball

I think he meant as the top scoring option off the bench and #2 or 3 in the 4th quarter

In which case I’d say he absolutely does, whether it’s on this team or not is the question. It’ll be tough for the Blazers to extend his contract unless he becomes more adept at the 1 or 3 positions as well so that he can play with Roy without forcing Brandon to play out of position. Roy can do it no problem, but he’s also the kind of player the rest of the team plays around rather than the other way around.

I really like the way Rudy moves without the ball, even when he’s not getting wide open looks from it he’s totally breaking down his defender by forcing him to hustle the entire possession. With Miller on the team now, I kind of look for Rudy to break out a little this year when he’s in the game with Andre. The combination of Miller’s penetration and kick out ability and Rudy’s work off the ball could be deadly in stretches.

Rudy is already signed though 2013, at a very affordable rate

the biggest problem will be finding him enough PT behind Roy to keep him satisfied

When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

Yea, but by then he’ll still be in his prime as a player and if he doesn’t get playing time at either point or SF, he’s going to have a hard time becoming a “manu” type in that sense with the Blazers.

I think about rudy all the time

unfortunately (or fortunately) for you they cant be rehashed on here.

I don't see Rudy ever being able to drive or create off the dribble like Manu can/could

He might produce like Manu scoring wise, but IMHO his game is more similar to Richard Hamilton or Reggie Miller.

For Rudy to be effective he will need guys who can get him the ball in the right place at the right time.

Richard hamilton

certainly does seem an apt comparison

I think Rudy's ceiling is the ultimate roleplayer / scorer / shooter. Not Manu. I don't see Rudy being the nightmare guard that Manu is, and I don't see him being the one guy that will singlehandedly win playoff series like Manu has.

He is not dominant ( so far ) with the ball in his hands, which is needed to be considered for all-star / super-star status. Rudy could surprise me ( and a lot of people on here I suppose ), but he has played his style now for several years. I don’t think we’ll see a huge leap in his skill set, just refinement and more knowledge of the NBA game. That alone should make him a solid starter, a 7-10 million a year player, and a guard any club would love to have, but not the next Manu.

isn't reggie miller a guy that single handedly wins play off series?

I think rudy’s game is more complete than reggie’s, but there is a focus on raw shooting ability that both players share. If Rudy is effective in that sense, he certainly could become the type of player to change series. Certainly not a slasher like Manu, but he can break down the defense without touching the ball until half a second before shooting.

Touche'. There are always exceptions to every rule.

Don’t get me wrong. I think Rudy will be a very good player for a long time. But I don’t think we should expect him to achieve Reggie or Manu like success. So far he’s not very good at getting into the lane, and is relegated to being a catcher of oops, and shooting 3’s. Both Reggie and Manu averaged around 5 free throws per game, whereas Rudy averaged just under 2 a game this year.

I see his ceiling being just a bit lower than Rip Hamilton

well...

I get that he hasn’t been a slasher. Here’s the thought though…He never seemed to have the green light last year to try it…he’s such a smart player with the ball…he’s did magical things in spurts in games…I know he’s unproven…and I don’t know if it could be his game…but i’d like to see him get a chance…I think it will take at least another half season for him to become that comfortable in the NBA….that was one big hiccup I had with Rudy last year (the same goes for just about everyone else on the team) is that they very frequently played VERY passive games…a lotta rambling but I wanted to clear up the idea I had for the post

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
