Odom Leaning Towards Heat
This would be a huge hit for the Lakers, making the gap between us and them that much smaller. This is good news if you are a Blazer fan!

not really. $8-9 million a year in california versus $5-6 million in miami is not as “small” a difference as you might think. just because miami doesn’t have a tax does not mean it can compensate for a $2-3million dollar difference in salary.
and i believe that the player doesn’t have to pay tax only during home games. when the player plays on the road then they have to pay the taxes in that state. so the player, in this case odom, would not have to pay taxes for only 41 games which makes the 2-3 million difference in salary even bigger.
I'm pretty sure
NBA Players don’t pay state income taxes in ~20 states.

The Florida & NBA Tax issue: Will He Be Saving a Ton of Money Because Florida Has No State Tax?
There also seems to be some major confusion by readers about the whole NBA state Tax issue. It truly is not as big of a deal as people would lead you to think – the players are taxed per game at the rates in the states they play. Meaning, when the Heat come and play the Lakers, Wade will get taxed at California rates. When the Lakers go to Dallas, they get taxed at Texas rates. Basically, to play in a state with no income tax impacts only 50% of your checks, and while there are some savings it’s not as dramatic as some lead to believe.
That seems ridiculous to me.
When regular Joe-Schmoe’s go on business trips for their company, they don’t pay different state taxes on their salary for the time they were in a different state. I don’t see why this would be any different.

LA Times sez:
“If opening day is the best day of the year for professional athletes, then April 15 — tax day — is probably the worst. Especially now that 20 of the 24 states with franchises in at least one of the four major pro leagues — the NFL, NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball — have laws that require visiting athletes to pay state income tax for each game they play there.”
