Greg looks quicker...

and he threw down a dunk on McGee without barely even noticing he was there. Pretty much just took McGee’s manhood. Also, Randolph is lucky the refs called a whistle when jostling for position down low with Oden, or he would been ripped apart.

Anyone else notice the helsacious defense Devin Harris was putting on? He was the pg #33 with Oden. It got me dreaming.

Harris, Mayo, Durant, Smith, Oden

I would watch every minute of this team if this was an NBA side or olympic starting 5. I wouldn’t even care if they won it all or not.

He thrives off of it.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

I'll quote him as he has said many times.

“The lesson, as always….I’m an idiot.”

I really don’t think he wants Oden to suck. He’s said as much in a few columns. Here’s hoping he continues to be wrong.

Yes! Yes! In the face!

He sure goes out of his way to bring up Oden a lot then

awesome! thanks for the video link

I can’t say I’m all that impressed though. I didn’t see anything that spectacular honestly. Its so hard to not get excited with all the hype but I just don’t want to fall into the same trap as last year.

The Blazers as a whole are far more like my wife than like me in the sense of their physicality on defense.

He didn't have much competition at the center position besides Lopez

that being said, this is a little different than last offseason when there was video of him working out with coaches or Blake and Frye. This was 5 on 5 with some of the best young up and coming players in the game.

Regardless, he seemed to move quicker than last season. And it provides us die hards with a little something to chew on for the offseason.

very true

Offensively, Oden wasn't the centerpiece,

but that doesn’t matter. It looks like Kevin Durant and OJ Mayo were taking most of the shots on the first team. Greg Oden was mostly doing what we’ve been wanting him to do this past season: staying active, being a defensive force, grabbing boards, altering shots, etc.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

He's doing a few things much better in this video

1. He’s defending the screen and roll pretty well, showing strong and recovering quickly
2. His hands are much improved. Someone must have told him that was his ball
3. He’s not hesitating when getting the ball down low. all about muscles
4. He’s running much faster.

Cautiously optimisitc

I know its just practice, but Greg’s movement looks fluid. It’s hard to tell where is weight is at. I think Nate said he wanted him around 260. I think he played around 285 last year. But he’s talking on defense, making Kevin Love look small, and catching would-be shot attempts. On one hand, it only been 8 weeks since slow-and-sluggish Greg. On the other hand, there’s a chance that next season we could be saying “remember when we were worried about Turkey-loo and Ronnie Milsap not signing?” – and laughing all the way to conteneder status.

by Petro4Three on Jul 23, 2009 7:49 PM PDT reply actions

wow

that is a much different Greg Oden then we saw last season. The quickness, the explosion for rebounds, the push and recovery on the pick and roll/pop. I could get use to seeing this Oden play for the Blazers for a long long time.

by usmcr3049 on Jul 23, 2009 7:51 PM PDT reply actions

Greg looks GREAT

He looks quick and powerful. It’s often forgotten that he couldn’t run, much less play ball, for the entire year prior to last season.

The last two offseasons, he couldn’t do anything. Hard to believe the kid put up a PER over 18 without being able to practice, actually. It will be EXTREMELY interesting to see what he can do with a full summer to play ball.

I am now officially pumped up for next season. Greg can be a dominant player next year. He’s only had 8 weeks so far. Wait until the season actually starts, and the extra weight is gone… watch the &^%$ out.

This team can contend for a championship next season if Greg and Nic both take a major step forward.

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

The dimensions of this vid make him (and everyone) look shorter and stockier

But he also looked really quick too yay!

Dictated, not read. The management.

I saw Greg

jump two pick and rolls (got back well on one and passable on the other) and let a driver pass only to block from behind.

No late jumps, no hip checks. Hooray. Let’s hope it’s a trend.

Brook Lopez looks like he's beefed up quite a bit.

He’s going to be a force if he keeps improving.

Sweet!

I’m looking forward to seeing more from Greg! I really want to see him play some offense next time…some hooks, up and unders, and whatever else he’s added on this summer. Can’t wait!

by Sabasdaman on Jul 23, 2009 11:52 PM PDT reply actions

Impressive Indeed!!!!!!!!

I like how he twice took the defender off the dribble, he kicked it out but could have gotten to the rim off the dribble. He looked substantially quicker and more explosive. He seemed to be snatching every rebound savagely yet with ease. oooooooohhhhhh, Ive been waitin for this. Oden’s ready to dominate this league!!!!!!

by blaze1 on Jul 24, 2009 1:11 AM PDT reply actions

One thing is for sure: Greg looks like he belongs in that group of elite players

Not necessarily on the 2010 world championship team (not many spots left, and I suspect they’ll go with a smaller versatile big man who can throw outlet passes like Love, a wing shooter like Durant to replace Redd/Prince, and Rose or Harris for the last PG spot over Kidd). But in that group of very good NBA players. He’s not looking like a foreign object that moves awkward and shouldn’t be there. He boxed out very well against the big guys like Lopez and Love, elevated well for rebounds, and made it harder for everyone to score by taking up space and quickly trying to break up picks. Encouraging.

On the 2012 Olympics team he and Roy could be in.

by Norsktroll on Jul 24, 2009 2:21 AM PDT reply actions

One problem though

The team last year went with 1 center and 2 PFs. Then just used Bosh at center a lot because the world guys can’t compete with him at Center. If they stick with the “1 true center” mold, then Oden could be SOL.

Now, if Oden becomes a beast, then they might just say “screw it, we’re gonna let Howard/Oden stay in all game and LOL these guys.”

With the distortion of the video

It’s hard to tell who is fatter, stronger, skinnier, etc……..the one thing that was obvious, was that Greg looked quite a bit more fluid and quick.

Based on some of the comments here, there may be some confusion about who is who

Go back and watch the video. Greg was wearing 47, not 52. Durant was wearing 52. I think most people know that, but some of the comments I have seen describe things that Durant was doing.

Very Encouraging...

Greg looked like a Man out there with those guys. He moved well, looked confident, smiled a few times… He also made some smart plays with his feet instead of reaching. Very positive stuff…

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
