TRUE PG's...we dont NEED one...but its nice to have

I have been observing, over the month and a half or so i have been apart of Blazersedge (i love it), as people continually call for a PG upgrade, calling for a TRUE pg.

Please read the whole post before voting, or commenting.

Star-divide

There are a lot of problems with the demands of our BE and Blazer fan brethren.  I am going to state only a few.

Firstly, the criterion, as I understand it, that we want our PG to possess

1. Better Defense, to protect our bigs from foul trouble

2. Can create offense to take the load off of Brandon

3. Can hit open 3's

4. Plays well off of Brandon

What is being described here, is an all-star, all time, PG.  That is not a bad thing, because I think that every team wants (and should want) the best player then can get their hands on at every position.  That is how a team SHOULD be run, otherwise you start working against yourself, which sucks as a fan (imagine being a Warriors fan...I live in the Bay Area, so i can relate to that most easily).  However, it is unlikely that we can get our hands on a player like that, especially without giving up substantial pieces.  There are FEW point guards that sufficiently fill those criterion:

Chris Paul (not sure about his off-ball play), Deron Williams (off-ball play?), Kirk Hinrich (does most of these things OK but not great), Mike Bibby (a shell of the former Bibby, hardly counts), Jameer Nelson, Baron Davis (defense on quicker guards?), Gilber Arenas (i dunno that he can guard faster players NOW), and Chauncy Billips.

I left of a substantial number of elite point guards because they really didn't fulfull all four points.  This, I think, illustrates the unlikeliness of grabbing a point guard we want, without severly crippling ourselves at other positions.9

ALSO, this illuminates how little we need an elite point guard.  Of those players listed, Chauncy is the ONLY one that has won a championship.  This is telling because his team is the ONLY one in the last 10 years to win without a star/elite offensive SG or SF (Rip and Tay are good, but offensively are no Dwade or Broy).  This lends itself to the fact that great wings DO NOT NEED (though its nice to have, as you want the best players) elite pg's.  In Fact, when you look back over the past decade at who has won a title, Chauncy Billups and Rajon Rondo are the two best PG's.  Keep in mind that Rajon was much better this year than last and that Chauncy's team was not centered on the traditional superstar composition but had a balanced roster.  I think this evidence supports the idea that Dominant players, mostly big men, win championships, not PG's.  The value of a true, elite pg is overstated, especially when you have dynamic playmakers on the wings.  Kobe has never had a very good PG, but has 4 rings.  The year he arguably had his best, with Gary Payton, he lost to the Pistons and Chauncy.

Now, the Spurs HAVE won with Tony Parker, an excellent pg, but he CANNOT shoot the 3.  Tony was not an elite player when the first won the title.  They were driven by their dominant post players in Duncan and Robinson.  Even Still, they did win two more titles with a very accomplished Parker running the point.  Also, GInobili's season stats don't suggest he is very good, but his substantially higher playoff stats suggest otherwise. SO, it appears he IS a very dynamic wing, especially in the playoffs, so don't start claiming that because of his season avg's he isn't that good.

Recent Cahmpionship teams that have had Elite wings did not need a great PG, because it is a duplication of ability.  The wing will often overshadow the PG for various reasons ie: easier to finish at the rim, easier to get shot off, and other things I cannot fathom.

This brings me towards a discussion of what we REALLY need from the PG position.

1. A point guard that can create for himself, and moderately well for others

2. Knows how to maximize the talents of those around him

3. Decent Defense, to protect our bigs (new rules make this virtually impossible, as no contact allows speedy guards to to watever, unless Rondo is guarding them)

These criterion are far more skewed towards the strengths of Tony Parker (though his defense could very well be a product of Popovich, who masked the flaws of and aged Michael Finely, Matt Bonner, Rasho Nesterovic, and Brent Barry...None of the players can really guard much of anything.  So, as much as I don't want to, I think I will take his defense with a grain of salt.) and not Chris Paul (not saying I don't want him though).  This greatly widens the scope of adequate PG's we can pursue and IF we even need a new one, because more PG's cant score/ create for others/ play decent defense, but can't shoot.

Our PG doesn't really need to know how to "run a team" or "manage a team", that really is Brandon Roy's job, as evidenced by the other elite wings in the league: Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Dwayne Wade.  The list stops there because Brandon IS the fourth best wing player in the league.  All of these players really control the flow of the game for their team.  What is the point of having a PG control the game if the SG or SF has the ball most of the time, and often is the one bringing the ball up and initiating the offense?  In addition, Nate's micromanaging, isolationist offensice style works against a pg helping the team greatly.  Ball and player movement alone would cause opposing defenses to react to all the players on the court not just Brandon.  It's when our offense resorts to "brandon watching" that we have problems.  This WILL NOT be remedied by adding a PG.  What our PG should do is be a threat, hopefully off the dribble as we have ample shooters, to score.  The penetration that our PG has will create another dynamic to our offense that is currently only offered by Brandon.

This is why I am advocating for a backcourt of Steve Blak and Jerryd Bayless.  They both offer considerably different styles of play that allows for more versatility in our lineups, offensively and defensively.  Blake "manages" games with the best of them, with the exception of the fast break (but we hardly do THAT anyways).  Bayless adds the attacking mentality that we really lack in any capacity, other than Brandon. This is more of a question of getting more offensive weapons that can score for themselves and relying on unselfish play to make sure that we get everyone involved.  Specifically, we need people to get the ball to the rim, as their style of play, and get us some easier buckets.  This is what Jerryd brings to the table.  He can develop adequate "managing" skills.  I don't think that has ever been questioned.  I think people are looking at if he can be a "True PG" which, frankly in my opinion, we don't need.

(Look at Russell Westbrook, he is regared as a great youg PG, but he really is also just a SG in a PG body.  His 5.3 to 3.3 assist to turnover ration is atrocious...He shot less than 40% from the field and much worse from 3.  However, his attack the rim style is a great compliment to the jumpshooting Durant.  This comparison stretches over to Rondo who cannot shoot worth a lick.  However since his teamates, save Perkins, can shoot, it makes him effective and hides his inability to shoot, and the "true pg" we want HAS to be able to shoot.)

I just want to point out to people that everyone on the floor does not need to be able to do everything well, thats what superstars and allstars do.  Rather, We need to create a team of individuals whose skill sets compliment each other and allows them to play well together.  That does not mean that everyone has to be a dead eye 3 point shooter.  Nor that players who cannot shoot cannot play with Roy.  Having some players that can shoot the three, and we have alot (rudy, webster, roy, blake, outlaw, batum), is great.  However, we need a more balanced offensive attack, so adding bayless to the rotation gives us more of another dynamic that we don't have, people the at attatck the basket.  Of the players on our roster, Roy and Bayless are the only two that can really do this.  Therefore, in the interest of compiling a versatile team, Bayless should get burn at the PG, at least 18 minutes.  I am not saying we should not upgrade, rather that it just is unlikely we get the pg most people want, and that what we have should be sufficient.  Furthermore, don't judge Bayless about his slow PG development, as that will have to come with season experience.  You cannot develop your ability to set up you teammates by yourself...it just doesn't work.

If you don't agree, please say why below.

how about we forget the 3's and go for defense

i small pg that can hit a million 2’s is fine by me, so long as he is a ballhawk.

I was thinking this too

Since Magic the high-assist pgs in the league haven’t won championships (Nash, Kidd, Paul). When you look at some of the teams that have been in the championship mix, you often see an assist tandem. Billups and Rip were usually around 7 and 5. That was similar to Pippen and Jordan. Yeah, Pippen was usually the assists leader on those Championship Bulls teams. Who was the PG? BJ Armstrong/Steve Kerr. Tony Parker is awesome, but he is usually sharing the ball handling/movement with Gnobili. How many “floor generals” are in that mix?

I am fine with emulating this model of having a PG who can knock down the open 3 and play decent defense while sharing some of the ball movement with Roy. The problem is that Blake and Roy are one of the worst defensive backcourts in the league. Those Bulls, Pistons, Spurs teams had excellent defense from the front and back and I think that is the difference here.

I don’t agree with you that EVERYONE on this site is calling for a true point (but you do a good job illustrating why the ones that do are being unrealistic). Sure, about once a week some yahoo posts some scenario where we get Chris Paul or Deron Williams by trading our whole future, but I have also read a lot of sound thinking about what to do about the PG position. Really, we just need to upgrade the defense in the backcourt while not eliminating our ability to shoot open 3s. That seems to be what this team philosophy is looking to do. The shooting need is why we aren’t going hard after Miller or Sessions. Roy might very well become a better defender, but Blake isn’t likely to dramatically improve any aspect of his game at this point.

I think Hinrich fits this bill okay, but if we can’t get him, I am happy to have Blake/Bayless for a year just to see if Bayless looks like he can fit in with the philosophy. He doesn’t have to average 12 assists a game, but he needs to play defense and hit the 3.

The 3

I also think he doesn’t have to be able to shoot the 3 if others on the floor can do that. But if Roy, Batum, Aldridge and Oden are on the floor, I hope the PG isn’t someone like Parker with the 3pt%.

Parker is successful regardless because he has others who can help spread the floor.

yeah

it’s really about needs being filled, not so much about who’s filling the need as an individual but the team filling the needs as a whole.

Yeah, the best player in the NBA hasn't been a PG since Magic

GOOD PLAYERS WIN TITLES!
Jordan was a SG
Shaq was a C
Duncan was a C/PF

If a PG of this skill level was in the entire and had the same supporting cast that MJ or Duncan did, they’d win titles just fine. As it is, the top PGs in the NBA right now have had David West and Carlos Boozer as their number 2 guys. Not exactly a Pippen/Kobe/Parker type player we’re talking about here.

Switch CP3 and Kobe last year and the Lakers still win the title just fine. Switch Lebron and Kobe and they still do. Switch Dwight and Kobe and… it’s a little different because of all the bigs they’d have had. Switch Kobe and Wade and the Lakers still win easily. Switch Kobe and Duncan and we have another maybe due to position issues.

Basically, if you switch Kobe and the best PG, SG, or SF, the Lakers still win the title easily because MVP Caliber player + Best Supporting Cast = Titles.

Well written

And frankly spot on with my line of reasoning but I notice a weakness.

Our team has the ability to tear teams up with faster play and more risk taking. We saw that at the end of the season when we had 17+ average wins for the last 10 or 15 games. I believe a point guard that can take advantage of that, at times, would be HIGHLY helpful to the blazers if they can do it without losing serious control. Blake does have a weakness in this area and Bayless is far too green at the concept of giving the ball to others. Seeing this style of play and someone able to bring that ball up the court and take advantage of players NOT Brandon, would greatly help us.

Counterpoint to this is the fact we saw faster movement and a higher paced game at the end of hte season. This may indicate that the current team composition is capable of that play without the upgrade at point. Roy did seem to be pushing for a faster pace and more risk and it looked to be working EXTREMELY well.

Another argument that I have against switching out the point is continuity. EVERY season there’s been a major overhaul of the roster. Every season the blazers start the season rough despite amazing work ethic and good chemistry. After ten or more games they start to get their groove on. I really want to see what this team can do with continuity. If we can start out the season with the same roster I think the blazers can actually open with a really nice record.

My thought, of course, has the flaw of a healthy Martel in it and how that will effect things.

I notice a weakness too.

It was Blake at the point in those 17+ wins you are talking about, where we outran good teams. Blake is very capable of running the break. The team he won the NCAA championship with was a running team. The reason we started outrunning teams at the end of the regular season was due to the play of Lamarcus Aldridge. LA starting running the floor like we always knew he could. He ran to the basket rather than to the elbow. That was the difference. I hope it continues this year. I have lots of confidence in Blake, but am worried about Bayless. I want him to get enough playing time to grow as a player, but not at the cost of wins, as the West will be as contested as always. I hope we pick up another back up PG for insurance. I think the questions about Blake’s defense are way exaggerated. He plays good defense most of the time, but as the original post said, the rules give the advantage to the offensive player, and PGs who can still stay in front without fouling, are very rare. Better team defense is what the Blazers need.

by wingzeta on Jul 22, 2009 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Blake is very capable of running the break

I’ve mentioned this before, but Blake runs an unconventional fast break. Steve’s not a threat to take the outlet pass and go “coast to coast” but he will look up the court and pass a low-trajectory “kick-ahead” lob (usually to LMA, as you said) and this can be just as effective at creating easy baskets (or fouls) as the fancier/quicker PGs who dribble the ball all the way to the rim

Certainly Blake and Bayless have shown a much higher fast break success rate than Jarrett Jack, but you still read Bedgers who are pining for the days of JJ

Correction

We need a PG who can:
Spread the floor with his 3 point shooting
      Play atleast decent defense
Distribute the ball, and create opportunities for our stars.

We dont need a PG that can generate his own shots… this is what Bayless is, and why he is becoming less desirable for our team… He can score all day long, but that isnt the role we need at PG.

I love Blake, but he sufffers with defense, and is only mediocre at creating opportunities for others.

Miller, cant shoot 3’s, but is adequate at defense and distribution. We could get by with Miller and Blake, as combined they have all of the attributes we need, and could be rotated on a situational basis (blake for offense, miller for defense)

However,I dont think this would be ideal, but more or less a band-aid until we can figure something else out.

Correct, if Miller is added and Bayless is traded, the Blazer’s PG position would have to be “revisited” in a few years, either by drafting another PG or making a deal for a younger option, etc

Trading Rudy for Rubio’s draft rights…?

if Rubio becomes one of the NBA’s biggest busts. I dont want anything to do with him at this point

Uhhhhh....

18 years old, just won defensive player of the year in the second best league in the world, has incredible court vision and passing ability and shot over 40% from three.

Why would people not want to have anything to do with a player with these credentials??

Because he has a slow release shot that is inconsistent….at the age of 18. Right.

by MadBlaze on Jul 22, 2009 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't want to deal Rudy for Rubio "at this point" either

I did say “in a few years” in my original comment. The imaginary timeline could go something like this

Blazers sign Miller and trade Bayless. Andre and Steve form a great complementary PG tandem. Blake signs a 3 year contract extension at some point in the next 12 months at a modest rate

During the upcoming 18-24 months, Rudy gets increasingly frustrated with this “lack of progression” and quietly requests to be dealt to a team where he has a chance to play more minutes at the 2. (Along the way t has become clear that neither Fernandez or Roy can adequately defend any position other than SG)

Meanwhile, Rubio plays b-ball overseas and shows no inclination to making his NBA home in Minnesota. His overall game improves to the point that he has surpassed the accolades that Rudy received in 2008—Ricky has developed a reliable jumper and has nothing left to prove in the ACB

So, at some point between February and July 2011, KP and David Kahn agree on a deal that would send Rudy and Joel to the ’Wolves for the rights to Rubio and Kevin Love.

How do you like me, now?

I can guarantee you that

a 32 year old Joel and Rudy will not get you Rubio and Love, ever. At that point, we’d potentially be trading not only the two worst players in the deal (depending on how Rubio develops), but also the two oldest by a significant margin.
