That article overstates the significance of American Needle
The article is a fascinating read, but it significantly overstates the potential impact of American Needle on professional sports. Munson ignores the inherent bargaining power possessed by the players—their skills are a very scarce resource. He paints a doomsday picture of professional sports leagues run-a-muck with unfettered power. Whether there is an antitrust exemption or not, the ability of players to strike, the unavailability of suitable alternates, and the soaring operating costs of professional stadiums will continue to ensure that the players get a (perhaps more than) fair shake.

baseball has had an antitrust exemption since the early 1900s
it hasnt affected free agency there at all
