Don't worry about Greg Oden
So some people are worrying about the Health of Greg Oden, and the future of our team. Many of us Blazer fans have started to question the front office in the midst of an ever so slightly bumby summer. There have been calls for huge trades, small trades, FA signings, and, in some extreme cases, for KP to be fired. People have become anxious that Roy and Aldridge won't be back. But we know that they will be here for a long time, so lets relax and move on.
This post is supposed to open the eyes of all the people who are doubting us, especially Greg. This is a theory that popped into my head some time ago and, every time i bring it up, seems very, if not extremely, plausible. Everyone i talk to about it is dumfounded by how relatively prevalent this rule is. It sounds quite loopy and rediculous, but bear with me. SO, here we go.
The reason I say that Greg will be a very good player in this leg, in addition to his exponential potential, size, demeanor, athleticism, and build, is his name: Greg Oden. He has two first names. While Oden is not a HUGELY common first name, it is very easy to conceive it as being one. Here is where I will segway into my theory.
Players with two first names dominate the greats of our sport.
It is not common to meet people with two first names, at least in my 21 years of experience on the earth. However, the NBA, especially this decade, has been overrun with great players with two first names. Here is a short list of players with two first names that immediately come to my mind:
Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, Dwight Howard, Vince Carter, Devin Harris, Brandon Roy, Derrick Rose, Blake Griffin, Eric Gordon, David Lee, Ben Gordon, Tayshaun Prince, Stephen Curry, Monta Ellis, Al Jefferson, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Chris Paul, Tyson Chandler, Carmelo Anthony.
That is kind of a long list, but it only took me 1:30 to come up with those 21 names...All of them are, or are expected to be great players. Specifically, lets revisit this list focusing on the top players in the game right now according to Hollinger's PER (i know some people hate it, but o well)...
1. Lebron James, 2. Dwayne Wade 3. Chris Paul, 4. Dwight Howard, 5. Tim Duncan, 6. Kobe Bryant, 7. Brandon Roy, 8. Tony Parker, 9. Dirk Nowitzki, 10. Al Jefferson.
Those were his top players this year...Now...notice that 9 of those players all have two first names. Al Jeferson and Lebron might be a stretch, but I am going to allow it, since its my argument and, well, I want to. That is pretty accurate right? Now, I am not saying that JUST because you have to first names, you will be a great player. BUT, it seems that if you have two first names, and the necessary physical tools, you have a better chance that someone without two first names.
As I go back to thinking up people with two first names, only focusing on already established players, picking up where we left off, the list grows
Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, Dwight Howard, Vince Carter, Devin Harris, Brandon Roy, Derrick Rose, David Lee, Ben Gordon, Tayshaun Prince, Monta Ellis, Al Jefferson, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Chris Paul, Tyson Chandler, Carmelo Anthony, Josh Smith, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Baron Davis, Rashard Lewis, Jameer Nelson, Gerald Wallace, Jason Terry, and Yao Ming. Now you could debate Yao, because Ming is not a first name. I think it very well could be...I have not had very many escapades to the far east to know. Although I live in a fairly large city on the West Coast, I have not met a Ming, OR a Yao. But regardless, I am counting him.
Talking about the best Chinese player ever, who happens to be a center, brings me back to our Greg Oden. Oden will be the best Old Young Guy ever. As stated by many blogs and writers, "The Curious Case of Greg Oden" is supported by his surprisingly youthful appearance, about a month ago. -- I digress.
Oden has two first names is my point, so don't worry, He will be great. And his two first names is in addition to his once in a generation abilities, that will be showcased in the years to come. He was going to be great before, but this revelation, of biblical proportions (like that eh? Cuzz the Bible has the largest proportions for everything...think Noah's Ark ;) ) (and apologies to anyone offended by using the Bible to make a joke, i guess...I digress, yet again). Therefore, we are in good hands, we have TWO players, one of which is top 3 at his position (and possibly the best, according to these people.) So therefore, I look forward to our team developing into a dynasty, led by Brandon, Roy, Greg, and Oden.

"Curry" is not a first name
Neither is “Oden”
Way to think outside the box, though, I guess
Dictated, not read. The management.
yea
I know two Oden’s, but you’re right, I made a mistake with Curry.
Oden isn't a first name...
besides I don’t trust people with two first names… it just isn’t right. I think Jay John is a big reason I made this conclusion.
you haven't heard of Curry Kirkpatrick?

When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
maybe it's Irish?
or just a nickname…I admit it’s rare…but a lot of Asians like that spicey flavor so knows?

Sounds like 3 first names to me
Curry-Kirk-Patrick
Big D from Blog-A-Bull - "Pritchard is such a genius that teams just give him players for free."
Greg Oden - The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946

brother in law wanted to name his son Oden.
I thought it was awesome. The mom didn’t. Ended up being Evin… not nearly as cool as Oden.
Yao is not his first name
Yao is the family name and his name is Ming. Ming is quite a common “first name” in China.
Thats what I thought
When I wrote this, but I couldn’t find anything to support that. Thanks for the heads up
Asians say their last names first, like...Ha Seung-Jin
maybe it has something to do with their language, did you know that all languages east of the ME read from right to left?
(now I feel like that dorky guy from “National Treasure”)

Family is more important than an individual.
You let people know which family/clan you belong to before you tell them your name. Has nothing to do with we write. Chinese writing actually go from top of the page to the bottom, and from the right side to the left side of the paper.
actually...that's more traditional style
Chinese is one of the few languages that is read from top to bottom, right to left, left to right, and bottom to top.
Newspapers typically are top to bottom and right to left as well as a lot of older books. a lot of older signs are read from right to left. newer prose and some books are left to right top to bottom like in western writing. it’s rare to have top to bottom left to right though. but anyway. streets will write from bottom to top—which is common in a lot of places.

Not all...
Asians read from right to left, not even all Asians east of the ME, whatever that means. I live in an Asian country that does not read from right to left and, in fact, they use the Roman alphabet. Many people in this country only have one name.
In English grammar, Yao’s name should be written as Ming-Yao.But we Chinese call him Yao Ming.
So the first name is Ming, and the last name is Yao.Same is as NYY’s pitcher Chien-Ming Wang if anybody knows him.
But Yao is definitely not a first name in Chinese.

Well, as long as KP doesn't acquire Rudy Gay
not that there’s anything wrong with that…
When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
It's very confusing when announcers start mixing first names and last names
Mike Rice would get crazy over Rudy Gay, Rudy Fernandez, Brandon Roy, and Roy Hibbert.
That's why we can't get Lamarcus Oden. I mean Lamar Odom...

I didn't say that...
But you have to acknowledge that Blake is significantly better than someone of his abilities should be…
Are you sure that Blake
is better than someone who’s as good as him?

Love it.
I am surprised I never noticed the double first name run we are having in the NBA. It is pronounced.
I do think the NBA is winning in this department at the moment. Here’s a link to the NFL all pro team. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/nfl/01/09/all-pro-roster.ap/index.html
Lot’s of problems there. Andre Johnson. Tony Gonzalez, Le’Ron McClain, Michael Roos, Kevin Williams… and others.
baseball has a few of 'em
Nolan Ryan and Jay Bruce come to mind…I’m sure there’s a ton more

from this year's all-star game, not too many options
You have Joe Nathan and Edwin Jackson.
Zach Duke and Ted Lilly sort of count, I guess.
Torii Hunter kinda counts.
Well fwend...
This guy suspects that all of this double-first name shenanigans has somehow been encouraged by the so aptly named World Canadian Bureau (the WGA for short). They’re clearly the ones behind all this, buddy.
I also submit Travis Outlaw
But only because I think Outlaw would make a BA first name
Dictated, not read. The management.
wasn't that
Josey Wales’ first name?

Well, I know what a "Johnson" is. . .

I did get a message at work from Misty Jungels.
????????
I was referencing the Josh Smith listing as a "Double (First Name) Agent.
Was that “whoooosh” the sound of something flying over my head?
Yep most DC comics heroes are the same way.
Counter examples though:
Jarrett Jack
Steve Blake
DeMarcus Nelson
DeAndre Jordan
Chris Douglas-Roberts 3!!!
Mike Taylor
Shavlik Randolph
Randolph Morris
Darrell Arthur
Chris Quinn
Wilson Chandler (he’s Ok)
Malik Allen

Great post
There is a MIng Ming that is pretty good and I don’t think Kobe is a first name so he only has Bryant so he isn’t great.

The kind of analysis that sets the Bedge apart from the others
Rec’d for the following:
Al Jeferson and Lebron might be a stretch, but I am going to allow it, since its my argument and, well, I want to.
Jefferson Davis proves that big Al fits.
I can’t believe some of you guys think Smith isn’t a first name. I met a guy named Smith once, his last name was Wesson.

Interesting theory
I’ve always said about Oden that I was witholding judgement on his post-surgery recovery until this fall – the fall of 2010. I’ve said that because of a previous instance where I jumped the gun on someone coming back from microfracture surgery.
The next summer after he had microfracture surgery, Amare Stoudemire showed up to Summer League. I saw him play and was very surprised to see him play as poorly as he did. This was nearly a year after surgery, but he no longer had the speed, the jumping ability and the explosiveness that I had seen pre-surgery. I promptly told all my friends that his career, although not over, would never again be the same. And was I wrong……
So, as I said, I promised myself when Oden had surgery not to jump the gun again on judgement.
wait a minute
Stoudemire, that’s not a first name!
Is it?
