Hedo At PDX

Update: Here's a link to Jason Quick's lengthy rundown of today's events.

Blazers coach Nate McMillan and Pritchard are both convinced that Turkoglu is the right piece to push the young and successful Blazers over the top and into championship contenders. Portland had 54 wins last season but was ousted in the first round of the playoffs by Houston, which suffocated Blazers stars Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge with double teams. With Turkoglu, the Blazers figure they will be a tough team to defend.

McMillan, who dined with Turkoglu on Wednesday night in Orlando, has been emphatic in his endorsement of Turkoglu, urging Pritchard to seal the deal. Pritchard meanwhile said he grew to admire Turkoglu even more this spring while watching him help Orlando reach the NBA Finals.

...

The Blazers' minds are made up. Turkoglu is the one. In the hours remaining until he leaves Saturday, the team must convince Turkoglu the Blazers are the right team for him.

Oregonlive.com has posted the following video from Joel Odom.

The video shows Hedo Turkoglu's arrival to PDX; also shown are the four horsemen -- Kevin Pritchard, Tom Penn, Mike Born, and Chad Buchanan.

Hedo Turkoglu arrives for Portland visit

Here's a rough transcript.

On the Blazers...

"This team is built on a bunch of great young players... if things works out, I'll just be the experienced guy, being in different situations, being in different roles and trying to help those guys make the next step.

Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, they built the team around those guys.... It will be healthy for the future, for the NBA, me being added here would be the piece they've been looking for, the experienced guy on the floor that can help those guys make the next step."

Where are things now...

It's hard for me to say right now about the stiuation, I'm just happy to be here. Just see the situation, what's best for both of us. Hopefully at the end we'll have some agreement."

Is money important...

"Of course money is important. We can't kid ourselves. On the money side you have to look what's best for you basketball wise. Where you stop and then where you can continue to build on. For me coming over here is a chance for me to have that kind of run I've been having for a few years."

When do you expect a resolution...

"The sooner is better. Then I can really schedule myself this summer, where I'm going to be, where I'm going to stay, where I'm going to leave... then I'll have that commitment to get to know my teammates more. Like I said I'm just going to lay it out there and see what's good for both sides."

Poor Greg. Even Hedo brings up his injury woes.

Hopefully Hedo signs. Pritchard has made him his #1 target and that’s good enough for me.

I am still a bit worried

But the more I think about it the more I can see it working out. In KP I trust I suppose. I just hope we don’t give him some obscene contract that ends up hurting us badly in the end

And at this point you do not know that PG will not be addressed.

I think that after Hedo deal is done, KP will be looking to make a PG trade.

by blzrfan1938 on Jul 2, 2009 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes

He would be probably the 2nd or 3rd best player in terms of his role on the team though. I think Roy is first, then it would be Hedo/LMA then Oden.

Roy will be making max contract which is around 16 a year. LMA will be right there at about 12-14 so it makes sense that Hedo should make that much.

in comparison to what the others will be making then maybe its not to bad. I would love a three year deal vs. a 5 year though.

if we want to win a championship, we need Oden to be at least our 3rd best player.

we need Oden to be 2nd best

Neither Hedo nor LMA is good enough to be a #2 on a title team.

by jksnake99 on Jul 2, 2009 5:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'll ignore the obvious LMA baiting there,

The point was that Hedo will at best be the 4th best player on a contending PDX team, behind Roy, Oden, Aldridge (in whatever order you want to place those 3).

by premthegrem on Jul 2, 2009 5:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jksnake99 is 100% correct, though, for Greg Oden must be at least the #2 option on ...

the Portland Trail Blazers for it to be a championship team. Neither LaMarcus Aldridge nor Hidayet Turkoglu are capable of adquately filling that role. So, unless Oden become a two-way force at the pivot, Portland will be stuck with an above average team rather than a great one during the next several years.

by AK1984 on Jul 2, 2009 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bit of a double standard here.

Why can only Oden become the 2nd best player on a championship team. Why can’t Aldridge improve?

Clearly you can’t win a championship with a 2 guard as your best player, a 4 whos big enough to play the 5 and has a soft touch as your 2nd best player, a multifunctional small forward who can slide to the 4 at times, a long armed defensive wing, and your promising center well under-performing.

Oh wait….

Honestly I don’t understand why some people don’t think Aldridge can’t improve. I will tell you this right now, more than anyone on the team, Aldridge has the potential to be the most well rounded 2 way player. He has the potential to be a good defender and great on offense. The rest of our guys are more focused on one side.

Do people forget that most of our players are still 25 or under?

by Nick Van Excellent on Jul 3, 2009 1:19 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Listen guys. If we are going to win a title Oden is going to have to become the dominant

center we envisioned. Signing Hedo or letting Nic play SF doesn’t change this fact.

Oden has to become a bigtime player if we are going to win a title. That is why it isn’t worth getting so nuts over this Hedo thing. It doesn’t impact the Big 3 on the roster. If anything it will help Greg’s development

you're right

but they are adjoining. It’s like California and Oregon. Northern California is culturally more like Oregon than southern California. They blend together. I’m sure there are places in eastern Europe and western Asia where the cultures become an amalgamation of both.

by twggyy on Jul 3, 2009 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

what I meant was

that I am sure there is a gradient between what we consider European culture and what we consider Asian culture, rather than a sharp line. I believe that Turkey is within that area of change in fact , here is a quote from the wiki on what is called eastern europe
“Turkey may be included into Southeastern Europe, Southern Europe, or Western Asia.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Europe
If you can call Turkey Southeastern Europe or Western Asia then I imagine that is place where Eastern Europe and Asia are blending together, rendering assumptions about both terms and what they represent to Americans moot.

I don’t think most of the anti-Hedo sentiment is based on him as a person/his abilities as a player. It’s all about price tag and the near certainty that at least two of Rudy/ Batum/Martell/Travis will be wearing another jersey next season, because that is too many wing players for this roster. I guess we’ll all have to wait and see…

Ok I may not be the biggest supporter of Hedo, but at this point we should just support it and look at the positive stuff that will come from this. First of all our offensive lineup will be sick and to have a guy at 6’10" who can handle the ball like a PG is a real benefit.

Might as well just unplug the TV/internet for a day or so...

and wait to see. My brain is melting from checking 18 different websites/blogs 87 times a day, listening to 95.5 in the morning/evening commute, Hedo Hedo HEDO!!!

I really don’t know what to think. On the one hand I love the team we have now and there are definite concerns. On the other, it’s not like the Blazer brass are ignorant to the concerns. If we as fans are aware of his limitations and the potential downsides, obviously they are as well.

And at the end of the day, it’s their job to make the tough decisions. It’s ours to love and support the team that they put on the floor.

Who knows, maybe he comes maybe he doesn’t, maybe he’s the missing piece maybe not, as for me, it’s hot, I have tomorrow off, and there’s a cold beer somewhere with my name on it.

yeah they would, Blake. I guess I just don’t see it as impossible, anything could happen and different GM’s could have a different value for certain types of players. You never know what KP might offer if they land Turk. I for one would be against trading Batum. Way too much potential in that kid. He’s one of those you let bake in your own oven.

by Jaedin on Jul 2, 2009 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree that Kirk is unlikely to be dealt

Jaynes and Geoffrey Arnold had a heated discussion on Takin’ Ball tonight re: Hinrich vs Miller. Dwight’s face was getting pretty red! Check it out if Comcast re-airs it later

I was making all kinds of noise re: dealing for Cap’n Kirk at the Feb deadline, but KP held onto the RLEC. Right now I don’t think the Bulls are that interested in trading him. And no, I wouldn’t put Rudy into a deal for Hinrich. The only PGs that I’d deal Rudy for are CP3, D-Will, Parker, DEVIN HARRIS or Ricky Rubio (but I’d make Kahn wait a year or two and squirm, first)

First of all, Dwight started talking about Devin Harris, and Arnold shot him down (“why would NJ do that? blah, blah, blah”)

Then Arnold started talking about MIller as a penetrator, and Dwight said he couldn’t shoot and how Hinrich was a great defender in the playoffs and his parting shot to Arnold was “you couldn’t have been watching the Chicago-Boston series if you don’t think Hinrich is a lock-down defender!”

(Meanwhile, poor Jim Fasero was stuck in between them while Arnold and Jaynes were leaning over the table and wagging their fingers at each other)

the Bulls are trying to win in 2009-2010

New Jersey is trying to dump salary in preperation for the FA market

I know you’re still holding out hope for Kirk, and last week he said Portland was after him, but that was before Gordon went and signed with the Pistons. To get Cap’n Kirk now will cost KP “extra” because they don’t “need” to deal him. And I’m not going to put Rudy or Batum into that deal to get Chicago to cough him up

Remember, KP and Nate really like Blake…even if Blazer fans are tepid re: his game

if the Bulls were trying to win in 2009-2010, they would have kept Gordon.

There have been rumors that Wade would return to Chicago, his home. I see no reason to believe that they are less likely to dump salary than New Jersey… especially when considering New Jersey has a better player on a cheaper contract.

Still on Nash?

He’d be an improvement, but, PER doesn’t take into account: 1st: Continued descent due to age 2nd: The fact his PER #‘s are inflated by the system he’s in 3rd: We still are weak on perimeter “D,” and this doesn’t help our biggest weakness…

I don’t believe its definately a guarentee to get a ring in the next 2 years either, look at the talent Nash had around him a few years back, and he couldn’t do it then, despite being a better player (due to his youth)

Not saying he’s bad, but to give up too much for him could EASILY turn into Devin for Kidd

Every possible direction is a risk at this point.

Standing pat = risk that they don’t develop to championship caliber.
Signing FA = risk of overpaying for cost / duration.
Making Trade = risk of sending too much talent out.

I just prefer the action rather than stay and pray. I can respect the other opinions though, don’t get me wrong.

And I here you on "everything we do is a risk,"

but the trading of Jefferson to the spurs, Lakers about to sign Artest, trading Shaqu for peanuts, ect., I’d characterize as really, really, low risks…

I’ve just keep thinking KP can do a move like one of these, or at least an “anti-Hedo” move, in the sense that BE readers will be majority-wise “psyched.”

the more I think about it, the more I’d be shocked if KP doesn’t know something more than us on either A.) Bayless’s Development Potential B.) PG trade possibilities out there right now

Nate said Steve's "tough"

but with the cap-space gone (after Turk signs) there’s not enough “extra” salaries to put together to add up to Nash’s 13,125,000

Outlaw+Blake+Bayless = 9,743,080 × 125 +100k = 12,179,850

(And no, I’m not putting Rudy or Nic into that deal to up the ante!)

by Free Bayless on Jul 2, 2009 7:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

no, I asked storyteller about that

the rights to unsigned Euros count as $0 when included in any deal

I don’t think they could sign Pendergraph or Cunningham and deal them right away, either

Nash’s salary is out of reach, unless they leave 1+ mil.in capspace leftover when signing Turk. Much depends on that 2009 NBA salary cap# to be released on 7/7

Next Move?

so once Hedo signs, then what is the next move?
lots of BErs figure blake and trout are gone,
maybe for Haslem from Miami? Solves the backup 4, adds more front line experience (with a ring) and saves over 1.5mil, trade machine says it works, but don’t know if that is really accurate.

That, of course, leaves the pg really thin with Bayless and Peppermint, unless Rudy is going to be on the floor with BRoy and Turkey for 30 mins…

Next Move after Hedo Signing

We do a sign and Trade with Phili for Miller, give them Blake and Outlaw We then Trade Rudy and the rights to Claver to Mini for Kevin Love

Line Up

Pryz/ Oden
LA/ Love
Turk/ Battum
Roy/ Martell
Miller/ Bayless

Love also plays center so this helps when Pryz leaves

by NBA China on Jul 2, 2009 8:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

KP shot down that rumor

someone texted KP about Andre MIller and KP said “no”

Wrong fit, Roy and Hedo will be the set-up guys, the Blazer’s “PGs” will need to hit the 3

What we all were “hoping for” re: a new playmaking PG is being filled by a Turk

maybe KP will bring in a 3rd PG who can defend and shoot, but either Blake starts at PG or they’ll go with the Roy-Rudy-Turk-LMA-Oden “daddy-long-legs” lineup

Matches up pretty well with L*A’s tall front court (Odom, Gasol, Bynum) eh?

Don’t you see Harris’ poor career 3-pt shooting as a deal-killer for us?

by MiledAnimal on Jul 2, 2009 11:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

absolutely not

a good 3 pt shooter is desirable, but Harris is 26 and an allstar for goodness sakes! If you have a chance to get him, you get him.

by jksnake99 on Jul 2, 2009 11:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think you are exactly correct.

I think in KP’s mind Hedo and Roy mean a top flight PG is unnecessary. We just need a PG who can hit the three and bring the ball upcourt. I really doubt we make any more moves other than maybe bringing in a defensive specialist at either PG or PF.

I really think Hedo will make Oden better, take some of the pressure off of Brandon on the offensive end which will allow him to concentrate on defense a little more. The combo of those two things will make us better.

While not totally in love with this, I completely understand the move and think it will benefit the Blazers.

I don't think many (I'm sure some are) are denying that Hedo is not a quality NBA Vet

It’s the freakin’ 50M offer that is driving me crazy… If this were a three year contract then I actually see great potential in this signing. Those extra two years just sink the team though. It will be the bad contract we have to beg someone to take later.

by Sonic Boom on Jul 2, 2009 6:39 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Didn't Raef just come off our books?

His contract was the same thing. When it was signed it was slightly too high, but then as he got older and couldn’t play his contract literally became a joke around the league (how many times did Bill Simmons mention it?). This contract will be untradable so we’ll be stuck with him. Hedo can’t play defense, which is what we really need. It’s like we’re ignoring everything that happened during the regular season (us needing perimeter D) and looked at what happened in the playoffs and overreacted. Overpaying for the top free agent who doesn’t fix our biggest problem doesn’t seem like a KP move.

Also, in the finals Ariza was able to shut him down and now the l*kers have Artest who will do the same thing. He can be shut down if the refs let a physical defender go at him, which is exactly what happens in the playoffs (especially if he’s wearing yellow and purple). I made the point in another thread that he’s like Blake in a sf body. Next season we’ll be complaining about his fault just like we did this last year with Blake, except he’ll be making $10 mil and expected to be the final piece to the puzzle.

Give it some time and opinions will change

It sure sounds to me like a done deal with Hedo; and I for one couldn’t be happier! For 2 seasons now the Blazers weakest positions were SF and PG. Remember, we’re only a few years out of having Ime Udoka – not even invited to our training camp – yet end up as our year long starter. Ime’s nice, but he barely sniffed any PT in San Antonio, and he’s a reliable 3rd string player on any quality playoff team.

Have we improved there? Travis is still Travis – meaning he seems unable to play the 3, and relies on his athleticism to get his shot off against bigger, slower 4s. He simply isn’t our answer at the SF spot.

Martell? Well, if (and that’s a HUUUGE if) he can come back 100% healthy he still has never really proven anything. Yeah, yeah he has promise, and I’m not counting him out, but I don’t have any faith that he’s the guy to help take us deep into the playoffs…at least not yet.

Batum? We all need to settle down a bit on Nic. Yeah, he was way farther along than many of us thought, but his offensive game is really raw, and while he’s been a great hustle defender, I don’t think he’s really at that “lock down” status quite yet.

Basically, I’d rather have Hedo with Webster and Batum backing him up, than what we got going now.

As to the PG problem…well, hopefully that will be addressed by KP with a trade. I really don’t feel comfortable with Blake, Bayless, and Patrick Mills as our guys.

BUT, I think we can trade Outlaw and one other piece (maybe Blake) to and get a legitimate starting PG. Sure that puts a lot of pressure on Bayless to step up, and I’m still holding out hope he can be our PG of the future. Bayless (a PG with SG skills) + Roy (a SG with PG skills) just might = a dominant backcourt.

So I say, lock up Hedo, even for 5 years. That makes us contenders right away, and gives us time to see if Martell can stay healthy or Batum can continue to grow and develop. Acquire another PG and hope that he can fill in long enough to see if Bayless can learn the ropes.

Now I'm thinking they won't bring in a new starting PG

for a couple of reasons

1) Hedo and Brandon can handle the ball, add a stud PG and there’s too many guys who need the rock
2) Blake shoots 40% from downtown and can help spread the floor (Steve Kerr, John Paxson, etc)
3) Rudy needs minutes, a lineup of Roy-Rudy-Hedo-LMA-Greg would be long and unguardable
4) They’re still high on Jerryd Bayless

KP will probably add a veteran #3 PG (Lindsay Hunter, etc) and a veteran big man and call it good

Hedo Turkoglu. Oh, and by the way, if McMillan plays Turkoglu extended minutes at power foward like he did with Vladimir Radmanovic back in the day, then I will call for his head. For whatever asinine reason, McMillan enjoys playing soft combo forwards at the 4 — such as Radmanovic, Travis Outlaw, et al. — yet, despite that fatal flaw in his coaching style, countless people still deem him to be a defensive wizard.

Why?

Kevin Pritchard is out smarting himself. We don't need Hedo. Outlaw is the same player only more clutch.

Hedo will average 11 ppg with the Blazers. He’s a declining player.

I had a feeling Portland would rush this and blow everything instead of just letting the team grow. Sending Sergio to a west team now adding a 4th small forward. We don’t need Hedo. We need someone like Artest who actually can play defense.

by BRoyInThe4th on Jul 2, 2009 7:12 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

I would have to disagree, Travis was only good for setting up his shot, Hedo brings a higher BBIQ and setup ability for other players, Travis may be more “clutch” but Hedo uses his skills more fully and can set others up to get the free open shot, Travis rarely brought that if ever. It was few and far between.

Outlaw is a talented player. So many games we won because when Roy was resting Outlaw was making shots.

The best move Pritchard made was clearing space for Bayless to play. Trading him in our conference was stupid. If we traded Outlaw I know it would come back to haunt us. You don’t give talent like that away just because we get Hedo. KP better not.

Blake > Miller

I dont really understand KP’s strategy with bringing in Andre Miller after acquiring Hedo. With Hedo and Roy creating and possibly GO and LA commanding double teams, doesnt the PG position really need to be able to shoot the three?

I think Portland could play Fernandez/Roy/Turk alot together as others have mentioned and this is something that worked in Orlando.

I think a good defending/good three point shooter is all the Blazers need from the PG position now….So Hinrinch fits the bill perfectly. Of course, now that Gordon’s in Detroit, it might take Fernandez to get the deal done..

besides possibly gaining the cap-space next July

Why would the Bulls agree to flip Kirk for Steve and Travis? Kirk fits their backup PG-SG role better than Steve (or even Rudy) would, and they need a “real” PF, not Outlaw (Travis would virtually “duplicate” Thomas and Deng)

I think we’ve been proposing this Hinrich deal for so long now that we just “assume” Chicago loves our role players. But they’ve got their own needs and without cap-space (or RLEC) KP doesn’t really have that much to offer them in exchange for “Cap’n Kirk, playoff hero”

Maybe KP has a deal for Kirk in place that will be announced after the 8th, but haven’t you noticed the HInrich “chatter” has quieted down since the Gordon signing? (everywhere except around here, anyway…)

The Winning Unit

Roy + Rudy + Hedo + Aldridge + Oden = Good luck defending that lineup fool.

I’m ok with that.
Options on offense are incredibly dynamic.
On Defense, this team will have to learn to play good Team D.

Good luck defending that starting lineup. It is the right choice. Even at 5 year 50 mil. With Roy, Aldridge, and eventually Oden being locked up to wrong term contracts. We are going to be handicapped in FA with the long term lockups. This is the one opportunity to grab a key piece in FA.

Make it happen KP. In KP I trust. Don’t listen to the bandwagon haters. They jump off as fast as they jump on. Stay the course. Make the decisions based on your intuition and what makes sense. Not what someone puts on a blog.

Addition Without Subtraction

Addition without subtraction is not a bad thing. Who would they have to give up? [yah, CAP space]

Imagine the screams if this was a trade for [insert your favorite here]? And, no hopeful trade for a point guard is blocked by the signing. Maybe opens ups some options. But, Blake may turn out to be the best fit for this team.

The Blazers require near All-Star or why bother – I see Hedo as borderline. I’ve looked at the free agents suggested and everybody turns out to have shortfalls in some crucial area. You have to realize you are picking humans, after all. Superhumans are drafted, often by luck; trades require flesh.

I wasn’t sold on Turkish Man either because of deficiencies but I understand the Four Horseman. He is a good experience anchor and scoring threat. Yes, I read the numbers, but it is a Bird-like (old type) intangible that I think they see.

I like the pick and role aspect, especially. If he plays small forward his length won’t change as he ages and he doesn’t base his offense on speed, vertical leap or charisma. Somehow, like Roy, he just gets past you. The comment about match-ups against other big 3s is a good one.

Makes a logjam and hard on Nic. If no trade, then my time solution is run, run, run and play pressing D. Take advantage of depth by game and season/playoffs. Injuries happen. Just wear out the other teams.

The Blazers are charting a five year plan so they’ll sign the required term.

Here’s a question: are his ’09 numbers WYSIWYG or can you claim any reasons for an improvement in his efficiency?

IMO

I watched all Magic games last season and have followed Turkoglu closely for a while, being Turkish and all..so take what I say with a grain of bias..

I expect Hedo’s shooting numbers to be much better than last year. His FG and 3PTFG% dropped almost 5%, and its not like the shots he got were much different.

His biggest negative on Orlando I thought was that in middle of games he would go long streches without scoring a basket…but on this talented Portland team, that shouldn’t be an issue.

I expect his points to go down but assists to go up, with overall a more efficient game.

I think Nate/KP saw how Hedo got the ball to Howard on the move (side ‘pick and dive’) and wanted to see some of those dimes heading Greg Oden’s way. If Turk can consistently get Greg the ball near the basket all of Oden’s “problems” will be over and we’ll finally see the player who we expected to get when he was drafted #1

agreed

he will average around 15 point per game, but his FG and 3Pt percentages will both go up a few notches. He’ll net 4-5 assists per game, and probably 5 rebounds.

How did you guys win that?

Somehow, like Roy, he just gets past you

it’s the pump fake and big first step

Pete Newell used to call it “the Kiki move” after Vandeweghe

Chris Mullin had it, too

The thing that seperates Turk is his ability to pass on the move (a taller version of Sergio)

by two4larue on Jul 2, 2009 9:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

3 range, pump fake, and passing

who wants that?

I’m feeling more like, IF they can sign him, he could fit an assigned role and be a nice addition. I don’t think he gets 35 minutes, maybe 28 (his career might last longer – at least for 5 years). I was thinking someone like Odom but I’m guessing he stays in LA and might not fit the locker room as well.

But Turkish Man (son’s nic’) might get a Finals AGAINST Orlando…

Can Toronto outbid us much? Seemed it was around a mill a year.

Thanks for the insights.

The Raptors would have to renounce a bunch of players

to outbid Portland for Turk

I don’t think KP and Paul Allen are going to let Hedo out of town without getting a verbal commitment, all of the other FAs are finding homes and the cupboard will be bare if they can’t seal the deal

there’s always lopsided trades, I guess. But once they’ve made their target clear, Kevin and Paul tend to get their man

by two4larue on Jul 2, 2009 10:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

We all need to reserve judgement until we see what this team does next year with Hedo in the lineup.

The facts are these: people loved him in Sacramento, people loved him in Orlando and people are going to love him in Portland. I’m not too sure about this move, but I really liked him when he played for Orlando and I’m sure I’ll love him when he plays for Portland (that’s a lot of love). If he helps the development of this team (especially GO) I’ll be super psyched!! Next year’s starting lineup will look like this:
PG-Blake
SG-Roy
SF-Turkoglu
PF-Aldridge
C-Oden
I believe that makes this Blazer team better.

well

If toronto makes a bigger offer, than it could come down to a choice between a few million more dollars playing for a team that will likely never get out of the first round at best, or a few million less on a team with championship possibilties. It’s not like he’s going to be hurting either way.

I'm still very wary of signing Turkey, especially if he gets 5 years

but one positive is that he had a very nice chemistry offensively with Howard. Roy never seemed to trust Oden last year and rarely looked for him (understandable given Oden’s struggles but still frustrating). Maybe Hedo will look for Oden and get him some confidence, and (maybe better yet) encourage Roy to do the same.

tell me webster cant/wont be traded.

Martell has “negative” trade value right now, due to his foot injury and his contract. If Webster returns to the court and shows he’s completely healed his stock will rise, again

It’s almost certain he’ll be on the fall roster (if healthy) and not be part of any deal until next February, if ever

I’m fine with this. Outlaw and one other player, probably Blake, out the door for an upgrade at PG and we’re set as follows (as you all well know):

PG: ???/Bayless/Roy
SG: Roy/Rudy
SF: Turkoglu/Batum
PF: Aldridge/Pendergraph
C: Oden/Przybilla

Maybe shore up that PF spot if possible, but that lineup there is a playoff team and maybe more, people. And I bet KP is banking on his ability to move Turkoglu three years down the road if he has to.

In the short term, we get an experienced, healthy, good locker-room guy with size, three-point range, and the ability to create his own shot. These are positives and we are better now as a result of this move. Evidently the strategy is to go for it all n the next 2 or at most 3 years. Get on board.

By the way:

I was opposed to this trade at the outset. I’ve come around on it because I have faith in Nate and KP. If you don’t, you need to look at how far they’ve brought us and ask yourself why you’ve got cold feet now that we’re on the doorstep of really mattering in the Western Conference. You’re losing faith now? Really?

Not me. There’s a plan. I’m not a director of player personnel or a pro scout, and neither are you. Our team is not run by retards. This is a blessing. Put down the Chad Ford podcast and give these guys the chance. They just might be right (again).

Hedo is a pretty big upgrade

By all acounts he is sn unselfish team player. He brings a skill set that will readily fit in to starting line up of Roy/???/LMA/Oden/Hedo. No more will teams get away with shading Roy and Aldridge on D. And once Hedo and Oden figure out that side pick and roll/ entry pass…watch out!

by Odenrising on Jul 2, 2009 11:10 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

My only question is

Who can we get at PG for Blake and Outlaw?

by Odenrising on Jul 2, 2009 11:11 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Better Question

Who can we get if we add in Rudy or Batum?

Don’t want to lose them, but it’s worth it for a good point guard, and with Hedo and Martell we have plenty of players.

Keep in mind that everything I know about basketball I learned on Blazers Edge.

by pualo on Jul 2, 2009 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd take Bibby, Miller, or Sessions

But it’d probably take a third player to pull it off, likely Rudy, Jerryd, or Batum. And you Devin Harris dreamers need to check yourselves because I think that’s a looooong shot.

by rivetz on Jul 2, 2009 11:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the Hinrich "hopes" are drying up, as well

Bibby made 19+ mil next year, so unless he’s willing to accept 12 mil or less and then be traded to Portland for Outlaw/Blake/Bayless x 125 + 100k then he’s out of reach (unless Joel’s contract is added)

And of course if you deal Steve and Jerryd there’s no backup for Bibby, and while Mike would be a good shooter to have playing alongside Brandon/Hedo/Oden he’s a worse defender than Blake

So, why not just keep Steve?

Miller and Sessions can’t shoot, and someone besides Rudy needs to space the floor so defenders won’t sag in and restrict penetration

So I ask again, why not just keep Blake?

KP and Nate love Steve and really don’t want to move him. Yes, I was frustrated with Blake following the Houston series—but you can see the “remedy” that Nate and KP have come up with—that’s Hedo being the ball-handler along with Roy and the Blazers “PG” position being an outlet shooter like Kerr/Paxson/Hodges were for MJ and Pippen. Or similar to the role Fisher plays for L*A

So, Portland needs a “new” starting PG? You’re going to have to sell me on that concept all over again, because I get the feeling we’ll be seeing a very familiar face in that spot again next fall

It may also shake out that we go into the season with the current roster and wait for someone to get desperate mid-season, though this front-office isn’t a big fan of midseason shakeups.

I do think that there’s a reason they’ve gone after Turkoglu so aggressively, and it’s not because they’re afraid of him bolting to Toronto. They need to know that they’re solid at that position before pursuing another move that will no doubt impact the SF rotation.

His moves up until this year had been pretty close to flawless

Not trading Raef might have been a mistake. Drafting Cunningham over Blake was a mistake. But all in all, he’s been great.

That DeJuan "Blake" is a heckuva offensive rebounder. :)

Aside from “pretty […] flawless,” I’m not sure that Kevin Pritchard is beyond average.

In a few years, I’d bank on Pritchard being John Paxson: Part Deux.

I hope this will be one of a several successful off-season moves...

I have been reading a lot of comments and people are really striking back at Turkoglu, which led me to look at statistics yesterday and this morning. Turk only averaged about 13 shots a game last year. He gets to the free throw line pretty well (almost 5 a game). 07-08 he averaged 14.9 shots per game when he had his 19.5 per. This year, in a contract year, when he should be more selfish, he backed down to 13 a game and towards the second half of the season was actually at 12. This most likely was because he had Alston as his point guard – Alston shoots more and passes less. Turkoglu became more selective with his shots and took on the role of point forward and passed more (his assists went up to 5.1, rebounds to 6.1, and his shooting percentage went up 2% to 43.6). He didn’t say screw the team, I am making dough. In fact he said the opposite and look what happened. There is no way Dwight Howard puts up the numbers he does and the Magic go to the Finals without Turk. End of story. He is much more than just a chucker.

Brandon Roy took 16.9 shots per. Outlaw averaged 10.5 for the year and over 11 shots per game down the stretch. Anybody who has watched a game knows at least half of those were when he didn’t even look at a teammate to pass the ball. There have definitely been stretches of 2+ quarters where I have counted Outlaws passes and it was at zero. I am not exaggerating in the slightest. Aldridge took 15.3 shots per game and 16 per down the stretch. All I am saying is that Turkoglu does not need more shots than the Blazers can allow. Trust me you are going to at least want Turk to occupy the defenses efforts of RJeff, Artest, Ariza, Melo, etc. The West is going to be even tougher next year, not easier for us.

FYI there were individual stretches of 4 games, 5 games, and 6 games when Outlaw didn’t get A SINGLE ASSIST last season. Do not tell me that is good basketball, and do not tell me it would be a mistake to upgrade and lose Outlaw.

Rec'd. Thanks, LiquidForce.

I’ve been thinking there must have been some reason for the drop in Hedo’s points other than the fact that he turned 30 this year, and you explained it well. The guy is in the prime of his career, not nearing the end.

BTW, Ken Berger, who broke the news about Ron Artest signing with the Lakers, was on the Carmichael Dave show last night and he said that Hedo is the best player available in this summer’s free-agent crop.
