Awesome!
Great article. It’s nice to hear that Oden has been working hard for the upcoming season. One thing I know is that hard work usually pays off. Nice read.

This is great!
And bar almost any free agent signing or trade, this will be the most significant item to the Blazers being championship contenders (i.e. Greg developing). Much rather see this than all the other speculation at this point.
"I saw him in the face" Sergio's quote on the latest alley-oop to Rudy.
by blazermaniac32 on Jul 2, 2009 11:12 AM PDT reply actions 2 recs
This is true
All this free agent junk is secondary to Odens development and Websters return. Seriously with Oden having a “break out” year and Webster coming back healthy, that would give us at least 5+ more wins next season. Which would put us in the 60 win range. That’s it, someone has got to find KP and Turk today and tell him thanks, but no thanks. I’m sure one anti-Turk fan interaction while he is being shown around P-town today will be enough to make him not want to come here.
Also I was shocked listening to the BFT yesterday, it seemed like all the callers were so pro Turk and anti Rudy. The callers were all talking smack about Rudy, unbelievable….

GO’s improvement going into his sophomore year (2 yrs from MF)
will be big, but the healthy return of 3M (fingers crossed) will give the
Blazers the athletic, strong wing that can stretch the defense. GO &
Smooth will benefit by having more room to operate with another 3pt
threat.
Don’t discount the improvement that Bayless will make this season
either. He is strong, athletic, aggressive and his killer work ethic will always
help him succeed with continued experience.

I was totally disgusted by Canzano yesterday (nothing unusual there).
What he said about Rudy’s game, is his opinion no matter how nutty it is and I can respect that, but talking about the guy like he did yesterday was absolutely uncalled for. Class and Canzano were never two words that fit together, but he’s continually lowering my expectations, which I didn’t know was possible.

I’m super excited to see Oden’s progress this season. Much of the interest in Hedo is because they want him to interact with Oden the way he did with Howard. I personally don’t feel he’s worth 10 million, but he is going to be a real upgrade.
The thing I don’t get with Rudy, is that he hasn’t really paid his dues in the NBA. He’s got mad skills and if he sticks with it he’ll have a nice career. I wish he would exercise a little patience. He had a fantastic rookie season, but how many rookies land in an ideal situation immediately? Almost none. It takes time. Sure he could be a superstar in the Euroleague, but he consciously took a risk joining the NBA, has only played one season here, and is making public comments about how he’s upset about the possibility of a few less minutes? That’s the game, amigo! He’ll get his minutes, as it is hoped that BRoy’s minutes will decrease some, but they probably won’t be on the floor at the same time much. I love the guy, one of my favorite Blazers for sure, but if he wants to be treated like Dirk Nowitzki, he’s gotta play like Dirk Nowitzki. Patience, Rudy, patience!
And as far your proposed KT/Turk interruption, if you want to meddle in the affairs of Blazers management, I suggest you apply for a job. GM maybe? Go run it across PA. Cause it seems you like obviously know better than they do…

Oden = all star at some point in his career: 90%

I think with a guy with experience in getting big guys the ball down low Oden should get those numbers easy enough, assuming his fouls go down.

You have to like a couple things about this.
First, it’s great to see Brian Grant back with the team and helping out. He’s a smart guy and you could definitely see him on an NBA bench at some point as an assistant coach.
I also really like how the Blazers are handling Greg this offseason. By giving him the freedom to be where he wants to be, they’re helping relax some of that stress that was clearly weighing him down towards the end of last year. At the same time, while they’re letting him spend time in Indy and Columbus, they’re not letting him take time off from working out and getting better. They’re making sure he gets the instruction he needs and the conditioning that will make him that much more effective next season.
And the best part about all of this is that, to a man, everyone involved in these workouts has praised Greg’s work ethic and his effort. This is clearly a man who WANTS to get better and is willing to put the time in to do so.
Yes! Yes! In the face!

This is much bigger news than any trade or free agent signing. Also glad there is a real big man (Grant) working with him in addition to Bayno.

Indeed!
Grant was so great with blocking out and defense. I remember when Brian shut down Malone in our playoff series win against the Jazz. I remember him blocking that dunk. I mean, Malone had the ball over and almost into the cylinder, but Grant just kept his hand on it and rejected it. That was a defining moment. Then Grant went to work on Malone with his baby hook in the lane.
Basically, Grant has so many big man skills. I wonder, is it Oden who is getting Grant ready to come play behind LMA???

Great to see Grant and Oden working together
I think with all Grant has been dealing with this is exactly what he needs to keep himself busy and his mind focused on something. He is doing an important job and I am sure Oden appreciates it… I know Blazer fans do.
I must say people are often too critical of Oden. Sure he looks disinterested and frustrated at times but I think that is more a function of him knowing he can do something (ball and stay out of foul trouble) but it not actually happening. I think as his game returns and improves you will see him having a lot more fun this season. I want Oden to return to the kid that loves to play basketball, not because I am all emotional, just because he will play so much better when he can just go out and play the game free and easy.

That is EXACTLY what we saw last year. He wants so badly to do what he thinks/knows he can do but which the micro-fracture surgery wouldn’t allow him to do. I go through the same sort of thing in my chosen sport: I can see what’s possible, I think I can do it and, when I don’t execute the way I think I can, it’s very frustrating.

lose upper body weight, strengthen legs, work out with a guy known for playing bigger than his size. i like.

I completely agree!
Oden hasn’t shown me any reason to think that he wasn’t worthy of the #1 pick. Centers take time to develop. I’d say that overall his rookie year was a huge success. The only concern that I had this year was the foul trouble, but that’s something that all rookie big men struggle with. Give him another year or two and he’ll be a force to be reckoned with.

The Blazers will play beautiful basketball.
Brandon will shoot the lights out. Blake will run and LMA will finish strong at the hoop. Bayless will play because we’ll be so far ahead in the 4th quarter, giving all the Jerryd fans something to smile about.
But wait, that’s not all. Rudy will go 5 of 5 from distance. Batum will posterize someone. And Channing will NOT lead the team in points.

How about Brook Lopez? Playing 30,5mpg he had 3,1 PF per game. Compare it to Gregs 3,9 in 21,5 minutes.
But don’t get me wrong, i think it was a great season for Greg considering his recovery
by starski on Jul 2, 2009 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Unfortunately, Nate had Greg on a short leash.
A lot of times, players learn the most when they’re able to play through foul trouble rather than be yanked out after they get two quick ones. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how you look at it) we have an extremely capable back up in Przybilla that can give us big minutes when Oden is in trouble. On the flip side, yanking a player, and thus not allowing them to play in foul trouble, tends to only make players play with more hesitation, thereby decreasing their effectiveness. For what it’s worth, Lopez was their main option and was forced to play more minutes.

After working out hard all offseason for the first time in couple years he should be the beast we all want him to be. And when he will play better, he will also look happier, so all the complaints will end. That’s just what i’m waiting for.
Blazers with Greg playing as good as he really can, being faster than all his opposition while still being as big or bigger than them, should be almost unstoppable.

I think he could be a great teacher to Greg. That big body of his should hopefully let him get used to having someone as heavy as he is defending him. Once Greg gets his lateral quickness back, we should really be able to evaluate his game….and I think it will be good.

what would be nice
Would be for Hedo to get together with Greg, Brian and Bayno and work on some side pick and roll plays before training camp. Get their timing and eye-contact down before training camp
That play is going to be a main staple of the Blazer’s offense, looking forward to it
When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

Considering the news recently with Grant...
… this is huge for both Oden AND Grant.
With Grant basically unable to ever play again, I am sure Grant is looking at this as an opportunity to do something before it gets to be too late for him. If you have no idea what I may be talking about, read that article before you read on…
I for one will love sitting back and watching Oden next year to see his newly acquired “Grant-style.” I am sure Grant will be watching even more intently then any of us. I can see/hear it in my head now, game 1, Oden gets a step inside on someone and takes it to the hole only to sprint down to the other end to incorporate a monster rejection a-la “Grant-style”… I can hear it now as Grant turns to a friend “Thats my boy! I taught him that!”
Boom Shakalaka! … Wait, Wheels needs to work on a new one just for him. (Should we start a new thread about this???)
If Oden soaks up all he can from Grant this summer and USES it, watch out. Remember, Grant could guard Shaq (in Shaq’s prime mind you) with the best of them. He battled the L*kers in the trenches in 2000 for 7 games. I need not remind you how that ended, it wasn’t due to him.
Here is my vote to see Oden with a Grant Rasta dew next season.
If your going to go, go all the way big guy. GO all the way!
