im excited, don't know why

Just thinking about some recent posts….
I don’t care if we don’t make any moves for a while.
I want to see Cunningham/Pendergraph in Frye’s old spot.
This is do or die for some guys on our team I would think, and it will be interesting to see how they respond to the pressure.

He doesn't need to be a creator/distributor

to be a good PG for the Blazers. What he has to do is (1) defend the position and (2) conform his offensive game to work with B Roy. If that happens, he’s the guy

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

life is better as an optimist

by Cablinasian on Jul 18, 2009 8:51 PM PDT reply actions

He's a willing passer

But not an able one.

I mean, I’m all for seeing the glass half-full, but he’s averaging 6.25 turnovers a game over four games, with only 4 assists per. Four games is not a fluke. His teammates are limited, but his turnovers have largely been the result of his own mental mistakes, and playing against more skilled and experienced players in the big league is not likely to yield better results.

Not that it’s an issue. After this summer league, it’s pretty clear Nate is not going to play him at the backup PG spot. Nate hates turnovers more than he loves baskets. He won’t play a point guard who can’t keep his giveaways under control. When Sergio coughed it up, he sat, and that was on a team that had no expectations before this last year, when they were happy just to make the playoffs.

Jerryd may get some run in the pre-season, but unless he miraculously has developed a court sense and the skills to take advantage of it by then, he’ll surely log even fewer minutes this year than last year.

by baduk on Jul 18, 2009 9:22 PM PDT up reply actions

It’ll be rough at first, like it was with Conley. No one’s disputing that… just think it’s worth more down the road, even if it sacrifices a few wins in the short-term.

Kamla is with NBA.TV, not the world wide leader

Here’s what he said about Rex the other night, on Harvey’s show

"Turnovers aren’t a big deal out here [in summer league] Fouls aren’t a big deal out here … if you’re a combo guard who needs to develop his PG skills, go out there and be a PG. Take risks. Make passes that may or may not slip through that traffic to the guy you’re trying to feed. Because if you don’t do it here … Nate McMillian does not want you taking those risks on his watch … I think Jerryd Bayless is a helluva talent … I understand why the Blazers are so reluctant to trade him … he is a bulky guard who can get to the rim at will, and in today’s NBA that is one of the most important skills that a PG or combo guard can have … the ability off the dribble to get to the rim take contact and finish, get to the free throw line … if [he’s] cut off [then] drop off a little pass, here or there … that’s an important skill to have, and he has that skill"

All I know is what I read in the boxscores

I haven’t seen a second of summer league play so my opinion on what’s happened so far is not worth a lick of salt.

That being said, Blair’s 6 for 16 shooting night is one very ugly number. I’m assuming most of them were close in attempts against a less than rugged interior defense.

Hey, it’s only one game I know. But if I were a Spurs fan right now I wouldn’t exactly be gleefully anticipating the day that DeJuan takes over for TD at the four.

by knickfan on Jul 18, 2009 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions

absolutely not… but in the second round, you’re generally drafting for either a big project or a specialist. Blair will be a great rebounding specialist for SA.

by Cablinasian on Jul 18, 2009 9:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I was actually more impressed

with the “longer” Spurs big men tonight, two guys I had never heard of. Blair got 11 rebounds but struggled to get his shot off against Pend or Padgett—that’s not a good sign

Of all the opposing big men that Portland as faced in Vegas, Dorsey (Houston) was the most impressive, by far

When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Jul 18, 2009 11:30 PM PDT up reply actions

summer league stats are much, much less meaningful than college stats

Blair is not going to take over for TD, but he’s going to be a substantially more productive NBA player than any of the Blazer 2nd round picks, provided he is able to stay on the court (which is admittedly far from guaranteed, but in the 2nd round its well worth the risk).

by jksnake99 on Jul 18, 2009 9:08 PM PDT up reply actions

He takes up space

But in the limited amount I saw Pendegraph against him, I was as equally impressed with Pendegraph as I was with Blair. I don’t think this was a slam dunk decision as others make this out to be.

"I saw him in the face" Sergio's quote on the latest alley-oop to Rudy.

by blazermaniac32 on Jul 18, 2009 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

College stats

are actually somewhat misleading as well.

The continuous hemmorhaging of talented underclassmen has seriously diluted the NCAA talent pool. I’d even go so far as suggest that you’ll find more NBA calibre players on a given night in the Summer League than you would in most Division I college games.

Of course, it’s still the summer league and something of a joke. But if tonight is any indication, I’d say that Blair figures to struggle much more on the offensive end in the pro game than he did in school. His size disadavantage will prove much more of a handicap in the NBA than it did in the NCAA.

by knickfan on Jul 18, 2009 9:15 PM PDT up reply actions

college stats are not a very good predictor of NBA success

but “not very good” is still better than “totally irrelevant” which is what summer league stats are. I agree with you on Blair’s offense, but he has an NBA ready skill— rebounding— and I’m not sure Pendergraph does.

by jksnake99 on Jul 18, 2009 9:16 PM PDT up reply actions

so you think the summer league talent

is not as good as college talent? Or is it the temporary teams, not much time together? Pendy looked as good as Blair to me.

by twggyy on Jul 18, 2009 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Pendy played even with Blair tonight. For sure.

Tonight was the first night Pendy got to play his real position… Once Coach P. figured out that Padgett was a legit Center, horizons were opened…

If this Blazer summer league team played 10 more games against all comers, they’d have a winning record.

Something clicked tonight…

Padgett is the new Stephen Hill

no, not really

I think having Dante back really helped, and Prunty put Jeter in the game alongside Bayless so the offense had more rhythm. The baby-Blazers were really getting after it on the defensive end, so maybe the stern words from “Sarge” after the Denver game left their mark?

That was my exact thought

Although I do think he will get his fair share of rebounds. He has a decent motor around the basket.

Really respect Kevin Arnovitz, does a good job of analysis. Was happy to see this note.

Kevin Arnovitz Bayless: desperate to make things happen. It’s not that he’s forcing stuff. With the real Blazers, it would be working.

really?

bounce passes in heavy traffic would work on the blazers against true nba competition?

While it may seem optimistic, Arnovitz is a very smart basketball observer.

Rex will be fine.

Bayless was hitting the wings for wide-open 3 pointers

It’s not Jerryd’s fault if those wing players are shooting <20% from behind the arc

If he was passing the ball to Rudy or Martell instead, Rex would’ve looked a little bit more like…Sergio

There ya go. The question being whether Rex will eventually shoot better than Sergio.

pendy's best game

He look much improved on defense and rebounding this game…and coincidentally he was actually playing in position this game at PF.

Pendergraph’s length seemed to cause Blair issues and he rebounded very well. His rotations and post D looked excellent.

Blair is too small to be sensational in the NBA.

and because he has no knees,

he can’t make up for his height with above the rim athleticism. Think Barkley, without the offensive repertoire or the hops.

’cept Blair actually has a really good vertical leap.

a friend was kind enough to record it

as noted above, Pendergraph’s best game, and we might have seen some weaknesses in Blair’s game beyond his ACL’s: his height will make things difficult for him. He looked stymied by Pendergraph down low, and Pendy is someone who has not impressed me yet with his interior defense.

Bayless showed much better court vision. Forcing passes inside still a problem.

One nice thing about this game was that the Spurs have some NBA talent – Hill, Hairston, Blair – on their squad, two 2nd year players, in fact.
