I Love Portland
Why Would Any NBA player not run to Portland?
When I think of all the places ive been to, I personally rank Portland as the best city in the USA. Why do I say this? Well Ive been to alot of American cities and none seem to compare to Portland. Not only are its citizens happy, healthy and safe, they live in the greenest city in the country as well.
Ive been to both coasts; New York, New York, Trenton and Newark, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Baltimore, Maryland plus many others throughout that whole area. Ive been as far south as Tijuana (LOL), Ive seen most major cities in California and Oregon. Ive been as far as Las Vegas, Nevada and as Far north as Tacoma Washington. My mom and sister live in the dirty south of Alabama, although Ive never been there, it doesnt sound like some place I personally want to go to any time soon. Although, New Orleans would be cool to see. I have alot of friends that live in Oregon from places like Kansas City and Denver Colorado, and what can I say, they moved to Oregon!
It hurts to think that someone would rather play anywhere but here. That we are so back woods, nothing but hippies and rednecks. Cell Phone? Whats a cell phone? That it rains to much or the weather sucks. Or that we have no beaches full of thongs and silicone. That we dont tan we rust. Or that our city is to small and that this market here is smaller than other cities. I get sick of all of that kinda stuff. For me, it makes no sense.
To me, Portland has way more to offer than any other city Ive ever been to in my life. Lets see, where to start? How about music? Every night in PTown is a music extravaganza! On any given night, its hard to decide what show or concert to go to! How about food? Portland offers some of the best cuisine in the world. Being that its a major PORT, it has some of the best seafood in the country! How about biking- Portland and its surrounding areas are ranked in the top ten in the world for biking destinations! Portland is ranked the top green city in our country! Oh do you like beer? Well PTown is the microbrewing capitol of the world! And even though I got it from some wierd McDonalds quote, Portland was ranked Top 5 "Happiest Cities for Families" in America!(LOL). We have everything to offer and more. Oregon is the only state in the Union to have a 2 year budget. While most of our states are in financial crisis or are filing for federal debt relief. There is no sales tax in Oregon, so when you go out and drop 100 G's on a new Escalade and another 10G's on that rock in your ear and another 25 G's on that necklace or a couple million on a house--- you pay not a cent in extra in sales tax! And not only that, speaking about cash, in these finacially unsteady times, if you had a chance to work for the worlds 5th richest man, wouldnt you? Talk about monetary security--Paul Allen signs your checks! I mean, your boss is the 5th richest man on the entire planet, meaning only 4 others have more than him, how do you pass on that? Oh and another most likely bonus -FREE IPODS! With Paul allens loot we have some of the best practice and training facilities in the entire league. Oh you want to go to a contender well good thing we are a playoff contending team again. So you want Endorsements?- dude Nike HQ is a few miles away and dont tell me playing in NY will get you more endorsements. If you are good enough the endorsements come to you! Im pretty sure Nike called Wade not the other way around.
Okay, calm down.
So im biased.
Im from a beautiful small town in Southern Oregon just ten miles from California. Its quiet and peaceful and Its full of rivers, and wildlife. At night, all you can hear is the wind in the trees, no traffic or construction or road work. I actually detest big cities in general because they are dirty, polluting our air, mass consuming our resources and proliferating a corporate lifestyle. But thats not going down in PTown.
Ive personally been to Portland many times. And maybe thats why I hold it above all others. First, I have alot of good friends that live there. My future wife took me to my first real concert I ever went to at the Rose Garden and Ive seen so many other favorite music artists in Portland as well. I actually had my honeymoon in Portland--sounds cheesy but we had the best time ever! I went to my first NBA game ever here at the Rose Garden. We lost. I went to my first NBA playoff game this year-we won!
Portland holds so many good memories for me and my family. It has some of the nicest strangers Ive ever met. Most of the people I see walking around the city are young college hipsters who always have a quick smile for you. Im impressed everytime I go with its culture and its artistic flair. Every suv I see is either a hybrid or a flexfuel or a biodiesel. People here CARE. They are NICE.
In the end, I wonder why a player would think Portland cant offer what they want. Why it cant satisfy some craving they might have. Why its not the place they want to make a go of it at.
I wonder, with everything Portland has to offer why not play here?
Oh well, I guess as long as people think Oregon sucks, maybe those people wont come here and we can keep this little secret a while longer. And I only want a player on my team that wants to be here and fits this culture.

Your average gym rat hasn’t the time to develop beyond jiggling silicone as a cultural selling point. I miss Channing already.
That's a bit harsh, mate
While the substance of your post is technically factual, it overlooks the many contributions made by Blazer players to the Portland community throughout the years.
Zach Randolph, for example, has been widely credited for his work in helping to preserve one of the city’s most enduring cultural and historical institutions:

I love Portland too
But it is missing some things offered by other towns:
A night life that goes all night
Other professional sports teams
Cultural diversity (not that we don’t have any, but the diversity that we do have is smaller than other cities, generally speaking)
Snow (and the ability to deal with it on the rare occasions that it comes)
Proximity to warm beaches, and the bikinis that come with them
Portland is my favorite city also, but I don’t value the things it is missing as much as I value the things it has. I just don’t believe that everyone could or should share my values.

The Mindset of An Average NBA Player
This is not that hard. The average NBA is young, athletic, and rich. If you were young and rich, Portland IS NOT A TOP CHOICE.
it should be
any player should be honored to be apart of the Balzers

Lack of "clubs" and rain.
Two biggest reasons people “who don’t know” don’t like Portland.
For the most part, any player we’ve had that has spent significant time in this city has ended up loving it. Cliff Robinson still has a house here. And Michael Jordan (who was never even a Blazer) maintains a property in L.O.

Where else but in Oregon...
- Can you drive 1 hour west to the Oregon Beaches, Fly a kite, build sandcastles, and find treasures combing the beaches, Drive1 Hour east and have a snowball fight on a mountain in the middle of summer, or chill by one of the many lakes in the forest, Drive 1/2 hour further east and be in the Arid high desert rafting down the Deschutes river, Drive another hour east to another set of mountains…and I haven’t even headed south yet…OR is one of the larger states in the Union..
- As far as clubs….We all know this town is chock full of strip clubs… Other clubs generally close ~2:30a. Any later and they shouldn’t be out anyways..
- It rains here but that’s why we have water during the summer and everything’s green…not Brown. It cleans our air, fills our lakes, makes our mountains breathtakingly beautiful with snow for all the skiers…and Bull Run Resevoir has some of the best drinking tap water around!
- Lack of oppressing humidity during the summer.
- Can 4,000 people spontaneously show up for a 1:00a surprise appearance from a comic and actually gather and disperse peacefully, not to mention blow the comics mind away with something he’s never experienced before.
- Can you live your whole life here and still not see half of what Oregon has to offer..

If you don't have something nice to say
then don’t say it at all. Why put somebody down when their work was met with approval from enough people to garner the prerequisite number of recommendations?
Your comment accomplishes nothing besides snidely denigrating the work of a fellow poster — hundreds of people read this fanpost, and you were the only one who felt the need to slam its content. That’s pretty lame.

AK's online persona
is the blunt assertion delivered with the smug certainty that comes all too easily to those in their early to mid 20s.
That said, his prolific contributions here and the consistency with which he performs his assumed role has made him an integral component of the Blazersedge gestalt. I could not imagine life here without him. Besides, I can’t help but like him; kinda reminds me of me, thirty years ago.
that was a douche comment

…and can’t wait to get back to Portland. Don’t get me wrong, The City is something to be seen and experienced but it lacks the things I call home.
It’s hard to write Portland’s good qualities in a brochure without it sounding lame and cheesy. Friendly casual people will smile and say hi as you walk by. We have a city with plenty of artists to love to share their work; be it flat, sculpted or liquid (mmm… beer). It’s just flat out cleaner in Portland; a sign that it’s citizens love their city to care for it’s smallest details. I’ve had many friends move here from other cities and it takes them no time to feel welcome and invited in.
Hey, I can understand why NBA players don’t want to come here. The winter’s can be rough if you’re ill-prepared for it and listen to the doom and gloom of the local media. We don’t have a marketable amount of cultural diversity but it is certainly there if you wish to find it. It’s not a flashy town. There are never any bylines on TMZ that read PORTLAND, ORE. Portland is also now the farthest NW corner in the league which is likely farther from a players original home and that much more time on an airplane during the season.
Opt of Portland on the merits of the team and it’s offer, not the city. While we may not leap off the page … oh whatever. Here’s the dagger: at least you won’t have to be in Salt Lake City.
How about because we are so small-time that we can't even get soccer and baseball going at the same time?
Things like that. Hey I love the city, been here my whole life. But we are seriously SMALL TIME in our thinking. We were when I was ten years old and we are when I am thirty years old. It just is. Other than the Blazers we will never have anything nice.

Given this fact
along with the city’s primary meteorological attribute, one can’t help but wonder whether the phrase “Make it rain” was originally coined in Portland.
Im certain it was, however, are you also aware that New York gets more rain per anum than Seattle AND Portland?
We get a bad rap for nothin!
Sophia
The Princess of Blazersedge
Not entirely true
I believe New York gets more “precipitation” than Portland. The amount of snow that NYC gets puts them ahead of us. In terms of pure rain I’m pretty sure we have them beat.
I was in NYC in MARCH once, woke up, and there was a foot of snow on the ground. What the crap NYC? I had to traverse crazy amounts of snow just to walk to the Garden and giggle as CP3 manhandled the Knicks by himself.
The Princess of Blazersedge
Wanna know why?
Oregon is one of the few places where full nude strip clubs can serve beer.
Even in Vegas you have to choose.
Full nude OR beer. If you want beer, you have to go to topless only clubs.
The Princess of Blazersedge
Make it rain..
High percentage of strip clubs…Zack Randolph, Quentel Woods, hmmmnn, yes I can definately see how that phrase could’ve started in Portland
If I put on a Spain jersey and dunk in Dwight Howard's face, they give me a "50"- Rudy Fernandez.
Not Familiar
I am not familiar with that phrase …does it has something to do with raining money down on strippers?
Absolutely
Due to recent economic conditions, “making it rain” in clubs is on the downturn and is now looked upon as very wasteful.
If I put on a Spain jersey and dunk in Dwight Howard's face, they give me a "50"- Rudy Fernandez.
Why?
People who can afford to “make it rain” at the clubs are giving the money to people who will no doubt spend it elsewhere and stimulate the economy even more.
Look at it this way. You have 10 million dollars and have been rich for a while. You own almost everything you want, but you still spend 1 million on goods. What do you do with the other 9 million? Invest in things that do not help the local economy! However… if you go and blow 50,000 of that cash at various strip clubs throughout the year, you are putting an extra 50 grand into the hands of people who will spend it, probably locally, on goods and services.
This is why the so called “trickle down effect” is so silly. Someone with 50 million dollars can buy whatever he or she wants. Giving him or her tax breaks will not create increased spending the will “trickle down.” It will simply create increased investing.

As far north as Tacoma, eh? You’ve certainly been around.
If you’ve never been to Seattle and Vancouver BC, you can’t say Portland is your favorite city in the world or even the US.You name a bunch of diverse cities. Why not try comparing it straight to what you appear to be looking for?
UNLEGITIMATE!!!!!!
Plus, you’re letting the secret escape that we’re not all of those things and people move here and drive up prices and blah blah blah, so shhh.

Native Oregonian
I’m retired military. Been around the world a few times, shall we say. I remember cheering for the Blazers while living in Denver and Seattle…..
I knew that I would always come back home to Portland. Traveling away from your roots makes you really appretiate how good we have it here.
And the Blazers are a part of that life style. Rip city!!
always look on the bright side of life........
There are a damn lot of snobs in Portland
In my opinion only comparable to San Fransisco in that regard. I love the city & the team, but people think because they drive hybrid’s, that they are better then people who don’t. Nasty looks are a plenty when I maneuver my F-350(For my business, not because I think I am cool) through Portland.
I prefer San Diego myself.
Patience :)
Gee...
For me it’s a sensation of fear that creeps up my spine when I see a f350 come into view. From all those occasions when a pickup flies past me while I’m walking somewhere and the passengers inform me of their opinion as to my sexual preference. Ha! Boy that never gets old let me tell you. Good clean small town fun, that there. Or the memorable time when those drunken fellows poured out of a f350 to knock my friends teeth out for waiting off the curb for a walk sign. I guess it’s easy to mistake fear for snobbery. On the other hand maybe stereotypes are pointless and degrading. Who can say?
You happened to run into the type...
That use that big pickup for play & not work. Thinking they are bad a$$es, no I. But I still get looks of disgust from the thousands of hybrid drivers, even though it is necessary to haul my enormous trailer. Walking across the cross walk at the rate of a turtle, staring. Ugh. Anyways.
Patience :)

Can't blame people for past experiences though
It sucks, but people will have prejudices based on the past. I went to high school with hundreds of Mexicans and my sister’s best friend, also Mexican, lived with us for a while. I have no predjudices against Mexicans.
However, what if I got beat up at school twice a week by said Mexicans. And then what if my sister’s best friend stole my dad’s priceless guitar signed by Elvis himself. I would then hold resentments towards all Mexicans because of these experiences, right or not. (Eventually these would diminish or go away depending on future experiences, but the past never fully dies.)
The Princess of Blazersedge
That's not a majority though
Every city has a lot of snobs. The problem is that the bigger cities are just indifferent to one another.
You see those 20/20 shows that stash a crying kid alone on a corner, only to see hundreds of people walk by. That’s giant city mentality. I seriously doubt anything like that would happen if they tried it in Portland. (Correct me if evidence shows otherwise.)
But, by the same logic… people feel that it is okay to inflict their views upon other people about certain issues.
The Princess of Blazersedge
no seriously
I get looks of derision from thousands of pickup drivers. So easy to project and so hard to empathize…
I haven't been to a majority of NBA towns
so I won’t argue Portland is the best, or even in the top 10, but I would DEFINITELY rather live in pdx than Detroit, Indianapolis, Oklahoma, Sacramento, San Antonio or Houston… and its not even close.
A silver lining for Blazer fans of the Sonics moving, is that OKC will probably always be the last place FAs want to live.
does oregon not have beaches?
apologies, I live in good old Winston-Salem, NC, and I have never been to the great state of Oregon.
Are there no beaches? What does your coastline look like? When you get to the end of the state, does it just like die off and become water?
It is just so hard for me to picture an oceanfront with no beach.
by John Park Williams on Jul 20, 2009 4:49 AM PDT reply actions
There are beachers
But the water is pretty dang cold and the weather isn’t always nice. You can find maybe 40 good days a year to go to the beaches here.
That said, if you go to the beach for the views, shops, and experience… our beachers are some of the best in the country. If you go for the sun and bikinis though… we lose. (Except for maybe Southern Oregon beaches? Not much experience with those.)
