With no trades, no added free agents...
If nothing happens in the off season so what. Well, sure it would be nice to add that "special right fitting piece". But if the Blazers don't, I'd like to remind everyone that there is more to basketball than championships. And what I'm talking about is every second in between. You have to enjoy those seconds, and enjoy this ride.
I heard it on the radio, I think it was CIP from 95.5, and he was commenting on how the up rise of the Blazers is one of the greatest times to be a fan. And he's right (if it was him), people are excited because every game is fun to watch. People are donning Blazer shirts.
Me personally, I like seeing my boys, and I want them to win a ring together. But its more than the ring, it's watching them win the ring. If all you want are rings, then your missing out on the Journey which is what it's all about. Live in the moment. The fact that radio and Internet is inundated with reports of the blazers off season is a sign of how interested this town is in the Blazers.
I sense a lot of frustration, that will go a way when the season starts. We are going to have great season, and were going to watch players that we are invested in as fans. The development of Oden, will be get better than Joe? Bayless as a PG? Batum? Is Webster healthy, are most exciting season without our starting SF. What are we going to do at SF, at PG? Rookies? We don't need some other teams dirty laundry to make the year interesting. How about LA improving, he's gotten better every year.
What about the Rudy? How is that guy getting it done in a high school teachers body? I think I'd rather see him put on 10 pounds of muscle than see JB develop as a PG .
Take heart, don't get down it's not worth it.
Then again, maybe its easier to worry about the Blazers than how your going make your mortgage payment in this economy.

I like what you're saying...
many of us, me included, often want the quick fix and the adrenaline high. I can’t deny that I want to experience another Blazer championship, but we have a team that’s fun to watch and they compete hard most every night. That ain’t half bad. Instead of wanting to make changes, we probably should be collectively praying that everyone stays healthy this year. I experienced the incredible high in 1977, and the incredible low when Walton went down the very next year when we stood at 50-10 and were rolling over everybody until that happened. I was at that game and you could just feel the air go out of the Coliseum (which, by the way, great memories notwithstanding, should be torn down and a ballpark built in it’s place!!). Sorry, I digress.
Anyway, you made some very good points.
Agree.
I’d rather have a bunch of players that I really enjoy watching than a having a championship with players that I don’t like. Sure, I’d love to see our guys win a championship, but more so I’d like to see these guys having a lot of fun. (I still think that we can win a championship with this particular team as is this year.)
I find it funny
how KP and the PTB brass have strung out trade crazy blazer fans this off-season, as if they had any intention of shaking things up to make certain fans happy. A years experience for the core, Webster coming back, and some nice young draft picks, the PTB are right where they should be— in contention.

I think to be more accurate...
the media has strung us out. It seems some fans believe that everything guys like Calzone and Quick say is REALLY straight form KP’s mouth. You are absolutely right that we are right where we should be. Why do some people seem to forget that the promise of last year is still here… and getting closer to reality?
Don't they know how busy we are
posting this blog day and night. Jeez!
Oden is already better than Joe Prunty

That's funny, because I don't perceive Gavin and CIP as patient people
In fact, their job is to have knee-jerk reactions to all news. If they are polarizing, all the better, that will keep people listening and calling in. Last I heard them, it sounded like they couldn’t get Jerryd and Travis out of town fast enough. And whenever a name-brand free agent or trade target is rumored, Gavin is all for it.
How about LA improving
I am opposed to this concept, which is why KP should steal Lamar Odom from the L*kers
If you were referring to LaMarcus Aldridge, use an abbreviation (LMA) that can’t be confused with a certain SoCal metropolex that is famous for smog (and yes I know his teammates call him “L-A” but that doesn’t mean it works as a “shortcut” when typing)
These “we should all just be happy watching the players we’ve already got” posts are getting tiresome. Nobody wants to see the roster improve more than Nate and Brandon. Nobody wants to make that happen more than KP. No fan wants to see a deal made “just to make a deal” And while it can be “fun” to watch the team play for 33 years in a row without winning a championship, nobody is relishing the thought of waiting another 33 years until the next title, either.
I keep hearing the “we can’t afford to shorten the championship window by acquiring an older player who won’t be around 3 years from now” sing-song and while it sounds logical, the reality is you’ve got to win one championship before you can even think about going on a run of titles. It’s easy to say “let’s not break up the current mix of players and they’ll be ready to win in 2 years when the L*kers and the Spurs get old” but if you take a look at NBA history you’ll see that some of these successful teams don’t rebuild, they reload. We’ve seen the evidence of this “reloading” process since draft night and especially the first week of July.
There’s a saying that veteran NBA observers use (“if you aren’t moving forward, you’re getting left behind”) and it’s apropos to the 2009 Blazer offseason. It’s not for a lack of trying, KP has been active in his attempts to improve the roster, and he should continue this process until all avenues have been exhausted. The “needs” that were identified at the end of the playoff series (more veterans with experience, adding more toughness, upgrade the PG position) haven’t gone away and aren’t likely to be “filled” by the current players aging 6 months from the end of last season until the beginning of training camp.
The “hope” and “mirage” of getting that “special” fit at or before the trading deadline shouldn’t be relied on, and the memory of the “vanishing RLEC” should remain fresh in the minds of all who wish to sail those waters. Don’t put off until the winter what should have been repaired in the summer, because you can be sure no other NBA team is looking to do Portland any favors, they are all going to look out for their own best interests.
I’m going to watch another summer league game tonight and I’ll try to “enjoy the journey” and “keep everything in perspective” but I’m not going to be sucked into the “we’ll get ’em next year” attitude. If we Blazer fans want to know the satisfaction that L*ker fans are feeling this offseason, then we can’t ease up and let the front office “glide” through the summer and keep the roster static. That’s like telling a shark to stop swimming, if it remains still for long enough it’ll drop to the ocean floor and become food for the scavengers. I don’t want to see the Blazers go through another 33 years of getting their bones picked cleaned because they hesitated to pull the trigger and make a few offseason deals that could of resulted in at least one championship, because they were waiting around for a dynasty

"If you're not moving forward, you're getting left behind"......
meaning……… if you’re not trading/acquiring new big name players, you’re not going to be as good as the teams who do. This has been roundly proven wrong many times, most recently by the Suns trading for Shaq. They were a top contending team before Shaq, and failed to make the playoffs after a full season with one of the best big men of all time.
Slogans don’t win championships. Team chemistry matters and injuries happen.
but that hasn't kept KP from looking for the "right fit" this summer
Again, we’re not talking about an extreme makeover, here…and you naturally picked the most “toxic” example of “keeping up with the arms race in the WC” that you could think of, off the top of your head
Ask yourself, did Brandon Roy say the team needed veteran help, or didn’t he?

that's solid
What is more tiresome? The "we should all just be happy watching the players we’ve already got" posts or the “let’s make a deal” parade of posts that have surfaced ad infinitum? I admit that recurring “Happy with what we got” Drawer is getting a bit stale.
For me, it’s been the latter. It’s hard to figure why the gradual and accelerated improvement in the team has been forgotten in hopes of dreams of World title fancies and ticker tape parties on MLK next June. It used to be teams would take a few years of playing together before they really clicked and became true contenders. Nowadays, if a team doesn’t win it all, it’s time to shake things up. It’s the they didn’t win it all last year so they’ll never win it all unless something drastic is done…now thinking that seems so perplexing.
Oh then there’s the other teams are doing it so shouldn’t we too approach. Yea, like the Spurs getting Jeff by dumping Bowen makes then a notch better. Or the fakers getting Artest and losing Ariza really defines reloading. C’mon. As soon as the Spurs lose Duncan to retirement and kojay wears the cross town uniform, both those teams are going to drop. Same with Boston and their changes, which do little more then keep their bobbing heads above water, but when KG is gone, that ship is going to be the NBA’s version of the Kursk. The difference is the PTB can afford the time to make wise decisions and keep improving without making sacrifices to appease the short-sighted win now at all costs fan base.
The PTB are still one of the youngest, deepest and most talented teams in the league. No matter what miracle trade has been fantasized about, this club is still at least a couple seasons away from SERIOUS contention. So I don’t think anyone is all happy happy joy joy about an uneventful off-season, but there’s a measure of content in knowing what the PTB got works, and why fix it if it ain’t broke.

As Billy Joel would say
“I don’t know why I go to extremes”
It’s a far cry from “improving the roster” to “it’s time to shake things up. It’s the they didn’t win it all last year so they’ll never win it all unless something drastic is done” but red herrings and straw man arguments always seem to be more popular debating tools than finding common ground, especially on the internet.
“Win at all costs”? No, Blazer fans have already been down that road with Whitsitt. Unfortunately, it seems that whever the idea of adding a veteran player to this young roster is brought up, there will be a series of responses that “those 30 year olds don’t fit our window” and “we’ve already got 3 big men and there won’t be enough PT for a 4th.” And to that I’ll continue to say that it ain’t necessarily so. Every playoff team needs veterans with experience, and if you don’t believe me that the Blazers are immune to this kind of thinking, just go back and read Brandon’s comments following his exit interview last April.
A free agent signing wouldn’t “cost” any of the Blazer’s young talent. A lopsided trade might, especially if you want to add an impact player like Hinrich. KP was talking tonight about maybe doing another deal like “when we had the 4th pick in the draft but were still able to get the 2nd and 6th draft choices to select Roy and Aldridge” Well, you don’t make those kind of deals unless you’re willing to surrender a few “expendable” assets. If that suggestion consitutes “blowing it up” or “making drastic changes” then so be it. I suspect that most Blazer fans will eventually support KP if he chooses to go this route, regardless of their feelings for any of the current players.

Only Talk
You can sign a free agent “if” the agent is free, not restricted. And if you sign that free agent, then he will need to fill a position of need. Now, outside of Hedo, who among the truly free agents was worth $10 million who actually filled a position of need? Answer, none. The most talked about position on this board is PG, but other than Kidd – who has never had any intention of moving to Portland – or Miller, who has an inflated idea of his value and is only a marginal upgrade over Blake – the rest such as Gordon etc., were in the wrong position or no great improvement.
Then, you can talk about restricted “so-called” free agents. But they’re not really free – are they? Odom, Milsap, and Lee – the best of the rest, are not free agents, and none filled a position of real need. Odom has never had any intent save to play in LA, Milsap and Lee were both going to be very expensive backups, and in any case, both Utah and NY were not going to let them go just because we make a bid. All that is really going on here is the agents want someone to “overbid”, so that they can drive a better bargain with the team that has their rights. Which leaves the bidder out in the cold. So what’s the point? Granted, we could “outbid” someone – but that’s a lot of money to commit to a backup.
It’s one thing to claim that we should “sign” a free agent, quite another thing to tell us just "what free agent we should’’ve signed " and whether or not the price was likely to be worth it.
And that’s the calculation that’s generally missing from those who believe that we just “must” do something. After all, they don’t pay the bills, and if it doesn’t work out that well, don’t have to take the flak.
From where I sit, virtually nothing has transpired that causes me any concern whatsoever. Certainly, we have some cap space, but you can’t use it if the player isn’t there – and frankly, the players haven’t really been there – unless we jack up the prices and over-pay for players who occupty positions that don’t reflect our greatest need. And never forget that when you do that, it handicaps you downstream because other teams are not about to pick up that contract – meaning you have to find someway to discount it in order to move it.
We have a strong and young team with 4 sophmores coming back. The history of the NBA is that players improve over their first 3 – 4 years. Meaning, they’ll all be worth more in trades in two years – than they are today.
Portland is “not” San Antonio, Dallas or LA. Our key players are not reaching the last few years of their careers. We do not “have” to make a move today. We have talent, and we can make that move when it clearly benefits us. Our players have 7-9 years in front of them. Much can and will happen.
Over-reaction is many times a greater sin than doing nothing. After all, in the NBA, when you ink that $50 million deal, you have to live with it.

You cant force it
Well said. If a good move becomes available, then do it. But there are a lot more wrong moves than good moves available. A wrong move at this point, these 5 year 50 millian dollar deals, take a way flexibility. I think KP has been being very carefull, and he should.
