Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Junk Drawer 7/17PM and 7/18AM

Well folks, its time for a new JD.

From the sounds of the BEdge basketball game, some of our fellow junkers and posters and lurkers who played may need some motivation to get on with their evening. According to a trustworthy eyewitness, it was a lot of failed shots, questionable defense and wallet thieves were on hand.

So in their honor... let's all give them some motivation.

What are your favorite motivational speeches?

My Personal Fave: "Everything is funny as long as it is happening to somebody else."

Here are some samples that will work...

  1. Bill Paxton in Independence Day -
Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in this history of mankind. Mankind -- that word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps its fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution -- but from annihilation. We're fighting for our right to live, to exist. And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive!" Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!
  2. Al Pacino in Any Given Sunday -
I don't know what to say, really. Three minutes till the biggest battle of our professional lives all comes down to today. Now either we heal as a team or we're gonna crumble, inch by inch, play by play, 'til we're finished. We're in hell right now, gentlemen, believe me. And, we can stay here -- get the $^!$ kicked out of us -- or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb outta hell one inch at a time. Now, I can't do it for you. I'm too old. I look around. I see these young faces, and I think -- I mean -- I made every wrong choice a middle-aged man can make. I, uh, I pissed away all my money, believe it or not. I chased off anyone who's ever loved me. And lately, I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror. You know, when you get old in life things get taken from you. I mean that's...part of life. But, you only learn that when you start losing stuff. You find out life's this game of inches. So is football. Because in either game, life or football, the margin for error is so small -- I mean one-half a step too late, or too early, and you don't quite make it. One-half second too slow, too fast, you don't quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break of the game, every minute, every second. On this team, we fight for that inch. On this team, we tear ourselves and everyone else around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch, because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the #$%@#^ difference between winning and losing! Between livin' and dyin'! I'll tell you this: In any fight, it's the guy who's willing to die who's gonna win that inch. And I know if I'm gonna have any life anymore, it's because I'm still willin' to fight and die for that inch. Because that's what livin' is! The six inches in front of your face!! Now I can't make you do it. You got to look at the guy next to you. Look into his eyes! Now I think you're gonna see a guy who will go that inch with you. You're gonna see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team because he knows, when it comes down to it, you're gonna do the same for him! That's a team, gentleman! And, either we heal, now, as a team, or we will die as individuals. That's football guys. That's all it is. Now, what are you gonna do?
  3. Mel Gibson in Braveheart -
Wallace: Sons of Scotland, I am William Wallace.
Young soldier: William Wallace is 7 feet tall.
Wallace: Yes, I've heard. Kills men by the hundreds, and if he were here he'd consume the English with fireballs from his eyes and bolts of lightning from his arse. I AM William Wallace. And I see a whole army of my countrymen here in defiance of tyranny. You have come to fight as free men, and free men you are. What would you do without freedom? Will you fight?
Veteran soldier: Fight? Against that? No, we will run; and we will live.
Wallace: Aye, fight and you may die. Run and you'll live -- at least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!!!
Wallace and Soldiers: Alba gu bra! (Scotland forever!)

And some visual evidence-

It's funny to me when bizarre facebook groups give status updates. For example:

Hey, where did we go
Days when the rains came ?
Down in the hollow
Playing a new game,
Laughing and a-running, hey, hey,
Skipping and a-jumping
In the misty morning fog with
Our, our hearts a-thumping
And you, my brown-eyed girl,

You, my brown-eyed girl.
Whatever happened
To tuesday and so slow
Going down to the old mine with a
Transistor radio.
Standing in the sunlight laughing
Hide behind a rainbows wall,
Slipping and a-sliding
All along the waterfall
With you, my brown-eyed girl,
You, my brown-eyed girl.

Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah
Just like that
Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah
La dee dah.

So hard to find my way
Now that Im all on my own.
I saw you just the other day,
My, how you have grown!
Cast my memory back there, lord,
Sometime Im overcome thinking about
Making love in the green grass
Behind the stadium
With you, my brown-eyed girl,
You, my brown-eyed girl.

Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah
Laying in the green grass
Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah

Panic! CP3 is not going to be dealt! We have to live with what we have or is on the market!
"In this league, anything can happen," Paul told Pro Basketball News. "I can be dealt. It’s possible. It’s possible."

In response Friday, Hornets President Hugh Weber said the possibility of them trading Paul is zero.

"There is no chance of him getting traded," Weber said sternly. "I don’t know how to say it any stronger, but there is just no deal we would contemplate for Chris. I can’t speak for Chris, but I think he was talking about the nature of the business and the fact that the question was asked the way it was."

Hornets General Manager Jeff Bower said from Las Vegas Friday morning he is investigating many things in regard to free agency and possible trades to improve the roster, but he said trading Paul would not meet any of those objectives.

"I have not nor will I enter any discussions for him," Bower said. "(Trading Paul) is not going to happen. I think what Chris said just shows his selflessness that he’s not different than anyone else on the team."

You said "groin"

The games I watched it seems like Bayless isn’t running plays as much as running the break then passing to someone else near the top of the key. In real life, he’d be giving it up to Roy.

Good lord, baseball can be boring as hell

Went to the Dodger game tonight, because the wife’s work was having Dodger Night. Neither of us care about baseball (I used to care a LOT, as much as I care about basketball now, but I stopped caring when I stopped playing), her co-workers are super lame, and it takes 2 hours to drive 12 miles to get to Dodger Stadium.

And they got blown out (at least they did when we left; I didn’t care enough to check to see if they got good).

It was so boring I wanted to cry.

by Mortimer on Jul 18, 2009 3:52 AM PDT reply actions

I love going to baseball games

I can’t remember the outcome of most of the games because it didn’t really matter. Baseball is the best sport for not paying attention.

by tominhawaii on Jul 18, 2009 4:14 AM PDT up reply actions

I used to

Being forced to go to these Dodger games and how long it takes to get there is the annoying part. I’d rather do anything else.

I blinked and missed the Dodgers young allstar pitcher, because he gave up 6 runs in 2 innings.

Baseball can be fun to relax and hang out with pals and buddies, but not with her co-workers. A friend of ours and his wife came with but left real early, and the boss gets all pissy if we leave early so we had to stick it out until the 8th inning.

by Mortimer on Jul 18, 2009 4:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

I hate stuff with my wife’s coworkers all they do is talk about work then pretend to care about me for five minutes, then go back to talking about work. She doesn’t like hanging out with my coworkers for the same reason.

by tominhawaii on Jul 18, 2009 4:21 AM PDT up reply actions

These people don't even talk

They are just LAME, and the head people in the firm are awful people. It is nothing but miserable being around them. The wife has tried to find a new job since she got there, but the market for lawyers is dead still.

So, for her, after a long week of being around them for 10-12 hours a day, going to a damn baseball game on a Friday night that takes at LEAST 1.5 hours to get to and hanging around these same awful people is exactly what she wants to do. PSYCH.

by Mortimer on Jul 18, 2009 4:27 AM PDT up reply actions

My wife's work isn't that bad

She has the same hours but hotel people are nuts. Their GM is German and I once saw him take one fork and eat a plum sized dollop of sour cream. One other guy is flaming gay, another is a bitter Australian, and they just fired a Russian guy who was a professional bike racer for the USSR back in the day. Everyone she works with is a little crazy.

The Australian lives with a slacker from Maui who spent the day riding jet ski’s with Marshall Mathers, Andre Young, their kids, and their bodyguards.

Here’s what I don’t like about baseball, although I do enjoying going to a Mariner’s game.

It’s purely statistics. If you take 2 equally matched teams, and look at 2 games played. Team A gets beat 12 to 0 in the first game, and then take the 2nd game 9 to 6.
That’s paramount to the Blazers losing the first game 120 to nothing, and then taking the 2nd game 60 to 90. Not gonna happen. Nope, I just don’t see it.
Baseball is like rolling dice.

please don't

It’s this kind of thinking that has turned the JD into a big chat room…. I don’t like it…. I never thought 92’s record would ever be broken, but I felt TiHa at least deserved a shot at it… what’s the point in trying anymore?

This motivational speech brings me to tears.

One for each other
and all for one
The three brave amigos are we
Brother to brother
and everyone
A brave amigo
Wherever they need us
our destinies lead us
Amigos, we’re always together
Wherever we go
we’re three brave amigos
And will be amigos forever
We are the Three Amigos
And amigos forever
We’ll be

Actually, I think it was the following that brings out my patriotism

And remember: Wherever there
is injustice, you will find us.
Wherever there is suffering,
we’ll be there.
Wherever liberty is threatened,
you will find…The Three Amigos!

My favorite line from that movie.
Lucky: Not so fast, El Guapo!
Or I’ll fill you so full of lead,
you’ll be using your thingy for a pencil.

El Guapo: What do you mean?

Lucky: I don’t know!

El Guapo’s henchman.
- I think he means that if you…
- Shut up!

I think for several months at work eveyone was saying "did you say something"
From the scene where Wilson walks into an almost empty room and somebody was at the fireplace, And he says “did you say something” and the other guy says “no” and he says “when, just now”.

Would you say I have a plethora of piñatas?

I think it was from that line that a buddy and I started saying "would you say that I have a veritable plethora", in different situations.
In my speech class we had a lot of discussion and there was this one guy who always tried to talk so no one understood him. Not that I cared, but he obviously made a conscious effort of it.
He made one of his usual comments and I fired back, "Notwithstanding the veritable plethora of ideas you just brought forward, your analysis is incongruous and myopic."
The whole class roared, and I felt really bad for saying it. Then the girl next to me leaned over and said, "I have no idea what you just said, but I really liked it."
He pretty much quit commenting for the rest of the term – I still feel bad about it.

Ideally 100% should vote in a democratic system. We also have the right to freedom… you can’t tell people what they should be doing in every situation. All you can do is educate them and hope they will make the more adequate choice, by my view, which is to vote rather than to abstein. People have the right to believe in other political systems and to not vote in a system they don’t agree with. Just sayin

it is impossible. Truly utopic. There is no right criteria to fix upon, there is no possible way of determining who should be part of which “group”.

That is not an objective criteria!!

That’s what I mean. Your common sense, my common sense, someone else’s? No test, trials etc. would be objective. They’d always be someone’s criteria, never objective.

He couldn’t finish on 2 drives, and it’s not a matter of that he didn’t finish but on both occasions he had a trailer where even a grade schooler had a 95% chance of making the shot whereas his was 50/50 at best. Not to mention, that if you can’t see the floor on a 2 on 2 fast break when there are only 4 guys, how in the world can you see the floor on an offensive set where there are 10 guys vying for postion?
And is it legal to sue someone if they blow your mind?

That's one of the more minor perversions I asked myself about in re TiR's

character but now I feel sort of persona non grata here at the Bedge after having supposedly chased him away. I think he’s still here disguised as yet someone else. The incident left me sort of wary of commenting much anymore and I definitely try to stay away from anything the least controversial. I wish everyone would stick with one screen name. :(

I don’t understand the persona non grata stuff — did people give you a hard time about that? Maybe I missed something. It always made me uncomfortable that a ton of people assumed TiH was the man behind TiR’s tasteless comments, so good riddance IMO.

I don’t mind the occasional switch to another name — I got a kick out of Princess Mercury and bdizzleistheshizle — but the multiple screen names biz has gone a over the top lately. It’s an integrity issue.

pet peeve of the day

i hate when your watching a game or something and they’re interviewing some random guy and they put dead space over at least 1/2 the screen in order to show the guy’s face. ok we don’t need to see his face to get that a interview is going on. Just put the sound over the action that is fine.

that is all

Coming back from a literary excursion. Read one of the top 10 poems ever again. The Panther, by Rilke, 1902

The author wrote all his works in German and later also in French, so it’s terribly hard to translate it into English while keeping the brilliance of wording.

It’s quoted in the film “Awakenings” (DeNiro, Williams) like this, which I assume is a pretty good translation:

His gaze is from the passing of bars
so exhausted, that it doesn’t hold a thing anymore.
For him, it’s as if there were thousands of bars
and behind the thousands of bars no world.

The sure stride of lithe, powerful steps,
that around the smallest of circles turns,
is like a dance of pure energy about a center,
in which a great will stands numbed.

Only occasionally, without a sound,
do the covers of the eyes slide open-. An image rushes in,
goes through the tensed silence of the frame –
only to vanish, forever, in the heart.

Some people tried translating it here http://www.thebeckoning.com/poetry/rilke/rilke3.html
You can see by how many different versions they came up with it’s very hard to capture both the concrete object description (the caged animal in a zoo in Paris) and the transcendent meaning.

The author truly must have been brilliant, he wrote many of his best works at a young age. Became friends with other great artists, especially Cezanne and Rodin. He also wrote love letter so good that rich women invited and supported him for years and years. A very practical skill at the time.

You sometimes have to wonder which current artists will be remembered as brilliant in 100 years. Maybe prolific yet also powerful songwriters like Dylan. But probably not that many “pop” culture artists.

my favorite rilke quote goes something like this

the point of marriage is to be the guardian of each other’s solitude.

I used to be in to Rilke quite a bit (the english translation of sonnets of orpheus). As time has passed I’ve grown away from his work. Although, I’m now really in Rodin’s work which is kind of funny.

Before Trents week 6 (or 5?) concussion, he was arguably playing the best QB in the entire NFL for the first quarter of the season. His QB rating was off the charts.

Sadly for Bills fans he may never be the same. We had a player who was probably going to redefine the position and now it simply looks like a 1st ballot hall of famer.

You get a shiver in the dark
It’s raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie double four time
You feel alright when you hear that music ring
You step inside but you don’t see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Too much competition too many other places
But not too many horns can make that sound
Way on downsouth way on downsouth London town
You check out Guitar George he knows all the chords
Mind he’s strictly rhythm he doesn’t want to make it cry or sing
And an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn’t mind if he doesn’t make the scene
He’s got a daytime job he’s doing alright
He can play honky tonk just like anything
Saving it up for Friday night
With the Sultans with the Sultans of Swing
And a crowd of young boys they’re fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
The don’t give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It ain’t what they call rock and roll
And the Sultans played Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
‘Thank you goodnight now it’s time to go home’
and he makes it fast whith one more thing
’We are the Sultans of Swing

by 92wastheyear on Jul 18, 2009 11:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I seen a girl on a one way corridor
Stealing down a wrong way street
For all the world like an urban toreador
She had wheels on on her feet
Well the cars do the usual dances
Sames old cruise and the kerbside crawl
But the rollergirl shes taking chances
They just love to see her take them all

No fears alone at night shes sailing through the crowd
In her ears the phones are tight and the musics playing loud

Hallelujah here she comes queens rollerball
Enchante what can I say dont care at all
You know she used to have to wait around
She used to be the lonely one
But now that she can skate around town
Shes the only one

No fears alone at night shes sailing through the crowd
In her ears the phones are tight and the musics playing loud

She gets rock n roll a rock n roll station
And a rock n roll dream
Shes making movies on location
She dont know what it means
But the music make her wanna be the story
And the story was whatever was the song what it was
Rollergirl dont worry
D.j. play the movies all night long

She tortures taxi drivers just for fun
She like to read their lips
Says toro toro taxi see ya tomorrow my son
I swear she let a big truck graze her hip
She got her own world in the city
You cant intrude on her
She got her own world in the city
Cos the citys been so rude to her

Come slippin and a slidin
Lifes a rollerball
Slippin and a slidin
Skateaway thats all
Shala shalay hey hey skateaway
Shes singing shala shalay hey hey
Skateaway

What does that mean though?

I argued FOR Durant during the lead up to the draft as a Devil’s advocate, and often defend him. I think he’ll improve his defense.

But he played very very well offensively and they still won low-20s. His scoring does not help his team win, because he and no one else can make plays for others. He’ll keep getting better at offense, maybe be the best in the league at scoring— it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t help anyone else.

by Mortimer on Jul 18, 2009 11:41 PM PDT up reply actions

And it doesn't matter whoever they get at PG, or how Westbrook develops

The ball will be in Durant’ hands, and rightfully so, for forever and a day and if he can’t use his insanely good scoring ability to help others, he won’t win anything… ever.

As a perimeter player, it just doesn’t work that way. Ya gotta help others, even ignoring his defense (which I maintain will improve, as all young guys who never focused on it improve— as long as he wants to).

by Mortimer on Jul 18, 2009 11:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Morty I really respect your opinion

The problem for Durant, in part, was he was playing out of position! You can’t play him at SG and expect the same matchup problems. (That’s why I brought up the Roy point at SF.) He’s a SF who is too quick for PF’s and too tall/long for SF’s to match up with.

That’s the definition of a matchup problem. You’re saying he can’t make his teammates better when he’s 21 years old? I mean, if this is true when he’s 25, I’ll agree.

But cmon, everything you say is ridiculous.

He played SF this recent season

And he did really well. His rookie year was a rookie year and I don’t judge him harshly for it, and he only played out of position that rookie season.

What position is he supposed to play? He played his position this season, if his position is SF.

Roy did very good at SF, for that matter— not that that is the point. Roy is a playmaking scorer, while Durant is a scorer. Having your primary ballhandler be a good playmaker is extremely important. Durant is a bad playmaker, so his points exist in a vacuum.

Every other good perimeter player came into the league a much better playmaker than Durant. Even worse than the defense, his lack of playmaking ability is much below the general allstar level wing.

T-Mac, VC, Kobe, Roy, Joe Johnson (at the lower end of the spectrum), Drexler, Jordan, name any top scoring wing you like in our lifetimes, and they were also playmakers. They all improved at playmaking as they went on, but they didn’t come into the league with no playmaking ability. Durant is starting at a very, very low level of ability there, which means it isn’t a guarantee he’ll improve at it.

I mean, even complete ballhogs like Crawford and Iverson manage to get assists just by having the ball in their hands so much. Durant is young, he will improve, but until he can pass he will only be a scorer. And guys who only score do not win, ever.

And he’s starting at such a bad place, passing wise, that he has a LOOOOOONG way to go. people just focus on the scoring, and believe me— he is an amazing scorer. You can’t ask for a better guy to put the ball in the hoop.

But Brandon Roy is better, and makes his team win… because of playmaking. He is a good scorer, but not great. Durant is GREAT at scoring. For having the ball in his hand every single play, his lack of playmaking is one of the worst in the league out of the stars of the NBA. And he IS a star already.

Kevin Martin has the same problem as Durant. Not a playmaker, but terrific scorer.

Well, I didn't mean it to pick on him

Martin is an awesome scorer, so it was a flattering comparison, I just think a team is at a huge disadvantage if their primary ballhandler doesn’t make plays.

I harp on it a lot and sound like a broken record, but I feel it is usually taken for granted since the primary ballhandler for most teams is, by default, a decent playmaker. Especially on good teams. It just usually goes hand in hand.

I think over time, with Durant, it won’t be ignored. There’s a difference between Kobe, who everyone hates but he creates easy offense for his teammates, and someone everyone likes like Durant, but he doesn’t make life on the court easier.

Ya know?

by pookeyguru on Jul 19, 2009 12:33 AM PDT up reply actions

I really don't mean to belittle Durant with this

I can say it isn’t coming from a place filled with sour grapes, but it will always come off that way for now because I am a Blazer fan.

I put a “primary ballhandler who doesn’t make plays” alongside the “big man who doesn’t play defense” as two things no good team EVER has. The Suns with Amare almost had the big man who doesn’t play defense and go all the way… but they didn’t. And they had Kurt Thomas, who did play defense, during the best times.

It’s just that, just like a big man and defense, there has to be SOME signs of life there to expect an actual improvement that rises to at least serviceable. LMA isn’t a great defender right now, but he tries and he does lots of things well on defense. He shows the propensity to improve at it.

Durant’s only been in the league for 2 years, and only 1 at his real position, but his role has remained the same for both seasons and we’ve seen no signs that he can be a Nowitzki, a Kobe, a Jordan— the types he was supposed to be. He’s more a better version of Granger on offense, which is good but not great. And it isn’t his teammates fault— he has talent around him, guys who can score.

Some skills get better with repetition. Some are just there. Some need to be worked on. I watched a lotta OKC, and from Durant I haven’t seen any effort to try to become a playmaker. Just a scorer. I am not sure they think there is a problem there, because by all accounts he had a terrific season.

He has plenty of time to improve on it, but I can’t recall anyone else ever coming into the league with that much scoring ability and no playmaking ability, and then improving the playmaking. He’s scoring so well, so he must be doing good, right?

Reggie Miller was just a scorer

I think he’s a good person to see how he compares, but I think most people would be bummed if Durant was only similar to Reggie Miller, no matter how fun Miller was to watch.

Was Miller the primary ballhandler, ever? In my head I don’t picture him dribbling much. He was always catching and shooting, and they had Mark Jackson and… crap, who else, when they made their runs to the Finals…

Besides Jermaine, of course.

I’m a big fan of Richmond. McGrady and Martin will be interesting to see.

Gervin topped out at 3.4 a night, and that was in 1982-83.

by pookeyguru on Jul 19, 2009 12:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Okay here we go

Jordan is a no brainer. Tracy McGrady is also interesting, but I’ve never felt he was a top notch scorer. I always thought his defense/play making was his upper echelon abilities and that he focused too hard on being a MJ like player. Reggie Miller once had 4 assists a night, and never approached it again. Mitch Richmond didn’t have high assists playing with Tim Hardaway, but playing without him where he did have the ball all the time, he didn’t have off the charts passing either. (He was not a very good ball handler, and especially in the open court. It’s what kept him from being a truly legendary player like Clyde.)

It’s hardly a surprise Brandon Roy is a better passer. Ditto with Clyde Drexler for that matter. Joe Johnson has better passing #’s than Brandon Roy.

Durant had 2.8 assists last season.

I see your point, and, honestly, I would agree that Durant does need to make those attempts as a player to get his teammates involved. However, I don’t think it’s as simple as saying he has teammates who can really score. I think this year may be a telltale sign of what you say Morty. Good call, sir.

And 2.9 turnovers

That’s another thing… the “more turnovers than assists” stat in a primary ballhandler is a rare thing to find.

Martin dealt with a lot of injuries and stuff this season, so it was a weird year for him and the Kings overall.

by Mortimer on Jul 19, 2009 12:50 AM PDT up reply actions

A weird year is the kindest way to describe it

It was really a whole lot worse than that. I never can remember a team that had strange injuries, strange losses, completely catatonic play at times, and didn’t exactly quit on themselves altogether at the same time. It was weird to say the least. (I do think Kenny Natt cost the Kings AT LEAST 5 games due to his complete ineptitude.)

I don’t really use Summer League as a gauge to judge future talent. It’s a small piece of the puzzle overall to evaluate talent. A very small piece at that.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

by pookeyguru on Jul 19, 2009 12:53 AM PDT up reply actions

But there's plenty to take away from it

Is he finding open teammates? Handling the ball well? Knwoing when to strike and when to pull back? Using his size to his advantage against the smaller PG defenders?

All of those will translate to the real NBA, even though the dominant scoring usually doesn’t.

by Mortimer on Jul 19, 2009 12:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Well he's not Kevin Durant

Passing won’t be his problem because he can pass out of double teams which he will likely create due to his size/length.

He & Donte Greene didn’t mesh well, but honestly Morty, I didn’t watch much. What I did see was him take shots for himself, and not really run a lot of offense.

Easy Reke is 19, and hardly the perfect prospect today. That being said, he’s also not so awful that the Kings can’t mold him into a player that will be worthwhile.

Do I think he did some of the subtle stuff well? Actually, no I didn’t. He didn’t show he could run a team well. He did show he could exploit his matchup’s well though.

The biggest concern I have about Easy Reke is can he be an efficient ball handler in the open court creating shots for himself and others. That wasn’t answered, and I suspect I won’t know that answer for sure until, at the very least, a couple months into the season.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

by pookeyguru on Jul 19, 2009 12:59 AM PDT up reply actions

That was my worry too

He can handle the ball, but he didn’t seem like a real NBA PG yet.

But he’s definitely an athlete with a lot of ability and skill. I think you guys will be really happy with him. I just think it’ll be really rough if he IS the starting PG… but better to develop him over playing someone at PG who isn’t in your future plans.

by Mortimer on Jul 19, 2009 1:01 AM PDT up reply actions

I hope he can become a bonafide PG

Because he will be a beast if he can.

Roy’s rookie year summer league, they played him only at PG to see how it went, and it was okay… but he is better as a SG who can defer the bring-the-ball-up-the-court duty and other basic ballhandling to another. Perhaps Tyreke will be that way as well.

by Mortimer on Jul 19, 2009 1:03 AM PDT up reply actions

Also Morty

The thing that spooked me the most about Easy Reke is that Chad Ford kept comparing him to Jerry Stackhouse, which was a damn good player in his time, but still, that scares me.

Yeah, that'd be worrisome

Even at his BEST, he was really inefficient and doing it on bad teams.

Good as a 6th man instant offense guy, but not as the best player on a team.

Since Tyreke is coming into a situation where there already is a top scorer, I’m sure the orginization will work on his playmaking and team-offense play over his individual scoring game.

I don't ever worry about having a protoypical PG anyway

Mike Bibby wasn’t prototypical, and neither was Terry Porter. The Celtics in the 80’s didn’t exactly have that “pass first” guard between Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge, and I think they did okay.

Magic Johnson might have set up his teammates, but he was anything but prototypical. Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen are hardly prototypes.

That’s what Petrie/Levien/Stirling/Cooper/Reynolds are thinking. Whether they are right time will tell.

by pookeyguru on Jul 19, 2009 1:04 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree

As long as you got a guy who can make plays, you’ll be okay on offense.

The Celtics had Larry Bird, Jordan never needed a playmaking PG, and (not to put us at the same level) we don’t ask our PGs to make plays because of Roy.

Playmaking doesn’t need to come from the PG, just needs to fit the primary ballhandler, whoever that may be.

I think Tyreke can be that primary ballhandler that is a dynamic offensive talent over time.

Nice work

I looked up George Gervin, and aside from Durant’s awesome 3 point shooting, their numbers are similar… great scoring, more turnovers than assists (which is hard to find in a perimeter dude who handles the ball), decent rebounding for their position…

I remember Gervin more as a slasher, but like I said, I was too young to watch him. It’s purely a comparison based on the numbers.

how come portland doesn’t have any interest in odom?

After the Utah Jazz matched the offer Portland gave Paul Millsap, the Trail Blazers have about $8 million to offer another player.

But it appears they don’t have any interest in Odom, and he doesn’t appear to have interest in Portland.

He turned down 9 million from the Lakers for starters

2nd, past issues with pot (Lamar Smok’em), and I’m betting that the Blazers don’t see him as the strong veteran influence they’d wanna bring in.

I personally think he is an amazingly talented player who you absolutely cannot rely upon and I don’t think Roy or Coach Nate have the rep needed to keep a space cadet like Odom in line. He can win a game for you, or have a total lack of focus that just confounds and confuses his supporters.

I think he could have been one of the best players in the league, if he had a different head.

He can be a point forward, and is a good post defender, but I worry about him signing with a team without a dominant personality to keep him in check and him coasting the rest of his career.

Tom Ziller wondering on NBA Fanhouse why the Pistons essentially exchanged Amir Johnson for Chris Wilcox

http://nba.fanhouse.com/2009/07/18/pistons-add-chris-wilcox-to-funky-frontcourt/

I wonder if KP went after the mentioned Bass, and Bass said no because he hoped for more playing time and better championship chances in Orlando. He would have filled our role of a good 4th big man to back up LaMarcus so nicely :-(

I don't see how

Amir is better than Wilcox now, though Wilcox isn’t anywhere close to as good as he could be. Amir didn’t really do much at all though, and we know Wilcox can do what he do and every once in a while have a big game.

He’s only 26 still… crazy. He prolly is what he is though.

A month ago I discussed with Ben and a few peeps who the best 5 players from Martell's 2005 high school class could be

It’s awfully thin. Ben thinks Amir is among them, at the moment I don’t think so but it’s not far behind. Awful. Especially when compared e.g. to the class that populated the last two drafts.

as of right now: monta, bynum, amir johnson, martell, julian wright
potential : bynum, monta, terrence williams, amir johnson, martell

but martell could swing up to 3 or maybe even 2.. or he could go completely off the list … he is a wild card.

My list right now would be Monta, Bynum, Lou Williams, Blatche, Martell. With Chalmers, Collison and Hansbrough looming to overtake anyone who screws up even a bit. That’s not really good.

http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/6/8/902535/full-court-press

by Norsktroll on Jul 19, 2009 1:52 AM PDT up reply actions

And the names Ben mentioned looming too. It’s not quite as bad as the 2000 draft, but it’s an argument for not taking guys straight out of high school.

by Norsktroll on Jul 19, 2009 1:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, you don't see how weak it is since it was pretty spread out

I don’t usually keep track of hgih school classes, just draft classes, so I hadn’t really put them all together before.

Monta and Bynum have to top the list, though they have had obvious problems not just injury related. I don’t like Lou Williams very much, Amir Johnson has done nothing to suggest he’ll be more than a role player (though he could be more), Chalmers was great for a rookie PG last year, and I think Julian Wright can become a real good player if he can get away from Byron Scott, who hates him.

I’m a Martell believer, so if he is healthy, I think he can be top 3. Monta is too good of a scorer to think Martell will supplant him, and Bynum as a good big is the most valuable. Collison and Hansbrough should be fine, but just role players.

If none of them ever made an allstar team, I wouldn’t be too surprised. I don’t think Monta ever will, and Martell making it would be a huge jump that I doubt he can make as a Blazer. Only Bynum has a shot.

KP in tonight’s interview seemed fairly happy with what he has assembled with the Blazers.

Not saying that he wouldn’t pull the trigger, but it shows that he’s not in any hurry to make a deal, unless it absolutely fits his criteria. Which I think answers why the offer for Millsap wasn’t slightly larger.

With Millsap I think his offer was right. You don’t want to overpay for a player to the point that he almost automatically becomes a bad contract when you get him. Give or take a million, but I wouldn’t want Millsap running around 20 minutes making 45+ million. That would really make him overpaid and hard to trade down the road since his total stats wouldn’t look all that good in a few years. It’s also why I wouldn’t overpay for Odom just to hurt LA. Their GM should just say “at that high a price, have fun with Lamar”. Or why I don’t want Deng anymore.

by Norsktroll on Jul 19, 2009 1:59 AM PDT up reply actions

I know ya asked Norskie

But I like butting in.

To me, we aren’t going to win a championship this year with anyone we can reasonably add. Seeing how our sophomroes (and, most importantly, Oden) improve and how everyone else keeps developing will enable us to REALLY see what we need.

No one has gotten anyone that I wish we coulda’ got instead. I’d rather see what we got with who we already have, and then make a move. No one’s value will go down, even if someone like Batum has a sophomore slump.

Me too

His ability to run the pick and roll plus the wide open looks he’d get woulda’ been nice.

But, he is old, and very expensive. I can’t see him being worth his contract the last few years of it, and all we could hope is that we’re so good that it doesn’t matter.

I am glad/fine that Toronto outspent us and Hedo liked the city better.

The way I look at is

we really don’t know exactly what we have just yet. YES – let this thing bake a little longer. And if there are any rising stars (Batum, Marty, Bayless, etc.) it should become a little more apparent. Then hopefully, with some of those questions answered, you consolidate your talent at that point.

But if and only if, that right player comes along before hand, you pull the trigger.

I think KP will at least keep trying (the last point would be the 2010 draft day btw, not necessarily the deadline), since it’s the last time to add a player “for free” and put some distance between other young teams developing and closing the gap to the true championship contender teams. Who also will likely always feature a (physically) more dominant player than Roy. So I tried to defend that opinion in Dave’s last piece that we need to have the best overall team if we can’t have the best superstar, but the voices for standing pat are loud too at the moment and call everyone a pessimist who thinks it’s not enough to just let everyone grow. At the next occasion they agree that Blake, Bayless or Travis are not that good, so it doesn’t make real sense to me. Dave chimed in that likely not everyone of our young guys will and even can develop equally well, like trees robbing each other sunlight and space. I would agree with that.

by Norsktroll on Jul 19, 2009 2:31 AM PDT up reply actions

We GOTTA use the space somehow

It would be a horrible waste not to.

I am sure we will, in some capacity, sooner or later.

I agree that generally you can’t count on all your youth to all improve, but I think it is reasonable to expect Oden, Rudy, and Batum to have good improvements upon their rookie season. Martell is a question mark because of the lost year, let alone the injury, and Bayless is still learning to be a PG.

But the 3 rookies who played a lot last season all should improve, if you ask me, and I’ll be surprised if they don’t. I am fine counting on them having a 2nd year improvement.

by Mortimer on Jul 19, 2009 2:34 AM PDT up reply actions

I’ve said this a time or two

but for stretches in the playoffs Oden seemed like a completely different player out there. I liked what I saw from him. I really think he said forget the knee, we need this game, and was pumping out the energy on both ends of the court. Take that desire and put it with a little more knowledge and experience and I throw all my chips in the Oden pot. You have 4 rookies in that list. I think the upside is incredible. I’m just not sold on Bayless yet, I haven’t ruled him out just yet. I’m just not sure what we have 2 years from now. I feel a little more secure with Oden, Batum, and Rudy.

by Blazer1342 on Jul 19, 2009 2:45 AM PDT up reply actions

I do too, even though I think it’s rather a requirement to overtake the top teams than an added bonus.

I’m not pessimistic for this team at all. That would be saying LMA is soft, Oden is an injury-prone bust, Bayless is a bad combo guard who will never improve, Rudy is overrated, Nic is average, Travis has no defense and basketball IQ, Blake is crap, and Roy will go down with more injuries. I really don’t think so.

I just feel some people are making it too simple that everything will work out fine just by everyone growing up and ignoring potential/built-in weaknesses. As a good GM, KP should be optimistic, but should also plan to work for contingencies. And I bet with you at some point this off-season Hollinger will write a piece that says last year we overachieved, so 54 wins is not our basis but rather a fluke. That Joel, maybe Blake and someone else from the core had better years than they should have had. And that’s before hoping that Oden breaks out as “the real Oden”.

by Norsktroll on Jul 19, 2009 2:46 AM PDT up reply actions

except for the really stupid teams[insert here]

Everyone knows that it is not in the Blazers best interests to hurry hurry hurry and make a deal untill we see Martell run and jump and we are one of the only cap space players left standing.

by southern oregon on Jul 19, 2009 2:12 AM PDT reply actions

Like I always said

This was a weak-butt FA class, so I was always hoping we’d use the cap space for a trade. Hedo surprised me but when it started looking real I did a good job talking myself into it.

I hope we can make a deal BEFORE the season starts that helps us, so we got training camp and the season to get everyone chemistricalified, but I just want a good deal, not just any deal.

by Mortimer on Jul 19, 2009 2:14 AM PDT up reply actions

Word out of Chicago is that they are high on Hinrich again (the team, not necessarily the fans. He almost splits them). To the point that they knew acquiring Miller and Salmons would likely be the end of Ben Gordon in Chicago, but that it wouldn’t really matter. And that Hinrich was much more amicable to the idea of helping and playing for Rose than Gordon.

As for Miller, the Blazers don’t seem to like the combination of his skills or lacking skills, age and price. Unless he goes down with his asking price a lot, they seem to prefer Blake over that change.

Since I don’t believe in Chris Paul miracles (Cuban has already offered to take their two worst contracts in a deal long ago and they said no), the best I can realistically hope for is some deal to shore up SF before the deadline when a player like Prince or Wallace could come on the market. Or maybe the Blazers willing to move Rudy and Blake should Harris really become available which still seems doubtful from both ends of the deal.

by Norsktroll on Jul 19, 2009 2:22 AM PDT up reply actions

The short sighted bad deal

Is much more damaging then waiting and making no move, for teams in our situation.

Plus, our success at our age and with how many 1st year – 3rd year players we relied on is sorta unprecedented. Plus, the money to keep them all. Plus, we are the Team of Destiny.

As long as we don’t sign Ben Wallace for 90 million bucks for 5 years, I’m happy.

The car-hits-man was some good stunt work.

There was a dummy in some of those.
When I worked in Seattle we were putting up a new building this guy picks up a piece of plywood from the floor and proceeded to walk into the hole it covered and fell about 30 feet. After the building was more put together, another guy drives one of those weird forklifts (small indoor vehicle) where there’s a hole in the top and you can stick your head out while you drive. While going through a doorway, instead of bringing his head down he tilts it to the side where the top of the door promptly took his ear off squeezing his head between the header and the roof of the forklift and also bending the metal header. That’s just the tip of the iceberg for this building.
