KP's assessment of players

Hey everyone,

When I was watching the Jerryd Bayless interview last week, I heard that he mentioned that he was an introvert. Just from that I realized that the whole team is full of introverts for example Brandon Roy (doesnt go out to parties), Lamarcus (guarded by people), Oden (keeps to himself on the team plane), Joel Pryzbilla (very laid back, only vocal when he needs to be), Outlaw (very quiet his early years), and Nate Mcmillan (very pragmatic with his teachings and planning). I figure that KP uses a psychology test to assess an individual player's inate personality such as the Myers-briggs test, I tested to be an ISTJ(introvert-sensing,thinking-judging). From my observations, I think Brandon Roy is an ISTP, they tend to make the best athletes with the best motor of how he percieves things on the court, pretty much a slow thinker that does things methodocal and can be flexible at any giving moment like looking to change the tempo whenever, if you are familiar with the myers-briggs, I want to know what you guys think of the other player's personality are. I'm a psychology major and I'm really into analyzing people's personality types, so excuse me for being nerdy with this lol. I think the only extrovert on the team was Sergio, he tended to do make things happen without thinking, and seem to complain and openly express his opinions all the time, which resulted on why Nate wasn't too fond of him being so unpredictable. Thats why I think KP would never go for an extrovert player (Lebron, Chris PaulKevin Garnett types ), you know the types who want all the attention, who are very aggressive, and big trash talkers, just count how many extroverts were on those jailblazer teams. And besides, the best players are Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Tiger Woods, and Tim Duncan, they were all considered introverts, but the media doesn't perceive these guys to be charismatic speakers, they get recognition of what they are good at. Let me know what you guys think, we definantly have the spurs model in my opinion personality wise.

Travis

I think he serves as an extrovert and locker room “glue-guy” for this team. His role as a positive locker room presence should not be overlooked, teams look for guys like that who can mentor younger players. Travis is still too young himself to do much mentoring, but my take from watching and reading behind the scenes sources is that to a large extent he has the grease that keeps the locker room loose, without negatively affecting discipline or attitude.

I’m not sure what his Meyers-Briggs test result would yield, but his early career introversion was likely at least in part due to being in a locker room full of colorful characters, many of which served as very poor role models. Staying our of their way and beneath their notice was just a prudent decision.

Hmmm - both greasy and gluey, huh? High praise!

Personality Theory is fun

but is limited in it’s usefulness. It can help explain what you are, but it is really not very good at predicting what you’ll do. Myers Briggs is kinda limited, but accepted. Big 5 and Neo Phi are better, more dimensional, as are other ones like the enneagram and elements of socionics. After lengthy study, I am sure you will discover that there are some things that personality theory can indicate and can help spot certain potential conflicts or chemistry issues, but honestly people are just too damn complicated to be summed up by any one metric.

I think that you might like reading the source material, Jung, Edwards, Bandera, Horney, Cattell, Allport, etc etc etc. Don’t put too much stock in the tests and the results.

I understand what you mean

I just have fun with it, it’s my favorite test to do, I like the big 5 also. I learned that we all these traits, just some are more dominant than the others, for example if you were all of a sudden being chased by a dog, those dominant traits will be exposed first, but yeah people are complicated. I always laugh when Ruben Patterson played, it’s like does he ever think when he has the ball in his hands.

I think the MBTI (Myers Briggs) can be helpful for the person who takes the test

I do not think behavior characteristics can be used to type others accurately. One characteristic of society for eons is our need to judge one another. I found the MBTI extremely helpful for myself when I was first exposed to it (more years ago than you are maybe alive? [smile]).

Still it is fun to guess what someone else is indicating and even helpful to partially understand them. I think your assessment of introvert tendencies on the Blazers is intriguing. Do you think that it describes KP?

I wish you well in your studies. It is great that your enthusiasm for it carries over here.

Jeez, I'm a little hesitant to classify people over the internet

Most of the info we have about these people is based on news articles and other second-hand sources. I wouldn’t want to attach a psych label on one of them without spending a few hours shooting the breeze . . .

Totally nothing to do with the Blazers

But I took the “test” you linked to and was determined to be a INTJ which they label the Rational Mastermind personality. I just wanted to be the first to say, that rocks.

Actually it’s just a Mastermind Personality, I misread the header. But apparantly my type is rare comprising only 1% of the population.

INTP here, also 1%

Did the description seem appropriate to you? Mine did.

Same here

INTP’s rule! But we really don’t care about that fact. :D

Although

I just took the test the OP linked to … and came out as INTJ. I’ve always kind of flop-flopped on the J-P part of this test. I find this sort of testing fascinating.

I am an INTJ

I flip-flop on the T-F piece. I really like where I am, balancing the feeling part and helping it to inform my thinking.

By the way, INTJs rule the world. In each our own minds.

there's two kinds of people in the world

those who take a few fries off your plate at a restaurant while you’re looking and don’t even ask.
and those who wait til you’re in the bathroom and drink your whole margarita and then fill the empty glass back up with lime juice.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
