Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

It seems we've been forgetting you Greg Oden.

I don’t like the fact that Bynum is opting out of the mini camp. It would delight me if Oden progresses wonderfully this summer, and then proceeded to take Bynum apart piece by piece. Oden and Bynum seem to be a intriguing matchup, and I hope they both take it to a rivalry. Step up, and have something to give Greg a big ol' chip on his shoulder.

That man is 10 fouls and one mean streak away from being a dominate center. Someone just needs to summon the beast. Please Ron Artest, just throw a punch at him.

Seriously though, I have heard all this chatter about Greg and his "A+ Workouts". I am dying to see him in action. If he improves as some expect him to, suddenly the holes we have in our rotation won’t stand out quite as much. I almost wish Greg was playing in the Summer League just to see if he learned to utilize his athleticism, work the pick and roll, keep those hands up, and lose 10-15 lbs.

If he grows faster then the media anticipates, we would be able to have an athletic 35 min a night center. How nice does that sound?

"Well hello there trade deadline, I’m KP and I have a monster amount of cap space. And due to the growth of our roster, we have a legit starting center on the block. He happens to be a great defensive, blocking, and rebounding force. We can change your center position entirely."

"What’s that? Why yes we have a cheap, expiring contract combo forward on our roster, he happens to be a great scorer off the bench. If you want a point guard back in the deal, we have a gritty tough Steve Blake to send over; and yes his contract expires as well."

We have about 8 million of expiring contract to send out, a ton of variable cap space to give, and with Joel’s contract added that is an extra 7 million of cap space. All that cash has to be very valuable to quite a few GMs, and with the quality of the players we are able to send out, that makes our situation at the trade deadline all the more important. That is truly the last chance to add serious talent, and if Oden develops it just makes it so much sweeter.

I guess you get my point; maybe management is hesitant to deal anyone because they want to make sure that the young guns on our team can step up and provide starter level minutes. If that happens along with our cap space we would have quite a few trade chips to offer GMs. More then enough to woo the people who seem to think GMs have a conspiracy against the Blazers.

Just think of how we did last year with Greg’s production. 52 games is awesome considering where we came from. Then think about what we COULD do if Greg became even a marginal force. There is a reason why he was the most hyped player coming out since Lebron. Common trends show that rookies generally get a big bump in production their second year in the NBA. Micro fracture victims get a big bump in production from year 1 to 2. Add to this these talks of great workouts and losing weight, and I am officially hyped up.

Greg Oden,

It is officially time for domination. Go get em’ big man. Ditch that apathetic attitude, and be Jerryd Bayless’ big enforcing basketball bodyguard.

Love,

OdenFanBoy

P.S. Please foul less often.

I'm excited too

Maybe not quite as optimistic as you, but very excited nonetheless. I’m actually really glad that all the talk about Free Agents, trades, etc has left our beloved Greg out of the gaze of the microscope. It should stay that way too. That way, when Greg shows marked improvement next season, we can all say “Hey, look what we’ve got!” instead of “It’s about time!”

I'm going to come up with the best line here ever, something really clever.

I agree it's best for Oden that the spotlight has gone elsewhere

I’m looking for at least 12 and 10 next year, which he’ll get easily if he can stay on the floor

Hoping for 14/10/2something

And this is probably in a paltry 28mpg. He won’t be out of foul trouble enough for 33-34 minutes until year 3, when he should start going 17/12

14/10/2

If the NBA keeps Tim Duncan as a PF on the all-star ballot then Oden could actually be the starting center on the Western Conference all star team. The only legit centers is Andris Biedrins and Andrew Bynum. With the fan votes choosing, Oden will definetly get the votes from china(Because he much more well known in China than Bynum and Biedrins) now that yao opted to have surgery and will miss the whole season.

I think China will just quit following the NBA now!

And Duncan is win/win and lose/lose for us. If he goes back to Center, it frees up a possible spot for LMA. If he stays at PF, it frees up a possible spot for Oden.

If Yao is on the ballot he will be voted in

Even if he doesn’t play a game

He did it! Yes he did!

Doesn't matter

He’d be injured so his spot would be replaced. All that would mean is that Duncan is listed as a PF instead.

I too agree Oden needs out of the spotlight...

…and that worries me about him. Most big-time draft picks that have trouble with pressure, expectations, the spotlight, or criticism, don’t pan out. I’m a Cougar, so I can tell you all about it with Ryan Leaf. You also saw it with Ricky Williams & Vince Young in the NFL, and neither Williams or Vince Young fit the “jerk” stereotype, in fact it’s just as common with the “sensitive” players like Oden. My guess, if Greg struggles this year, his confidence won’t be able to recover and he’ll wash out. Many other players have done it faster than 3 years, and you can already see big cracks in his confidence.

He still has All-Star potential, but he also has a significant risk of being a bust. If I had my way, I’d trade him now while he still has value, the risk is way too high.

in the not forgetting Oden vein

He absolutely dominated Joey Dorsey, summer league 09’ darling, in the 07’ tourney after Dorsey said he was going to eat Oden’s lunch.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

I will talk about DeJuan Blair no more forever

This shows well the many assets KP

KP has built up advantages in the make-up of this team over time. All that potential energy should realize something big for us.

I agree that KP has to jump some way some time before the trade deadline passes. But, no, he ain’t done using that cap space, yet.

Go, Greg, Go!

Can we stop with the trade Steve Blake bit ?

Get over it PBF. Blake is a great running mate to BRoy
and with GO’s improvement, the team defense will get better.
Blake can work on funneling the quick PG’s to the middle.

It's GO time !

Patience is a beautiful thing...

I mean if you look at all this “is KP failing us” chatter around the radio and newspaper, it is pretty clear that the Must Have It NOW media is ruffling feathers just for the sake of headlines. But the truth is exactly what it always has been….

The Portland Trail Blazers have a lot of talent and a lot of Flexibility. That flexibility word is the one that KP and Co. had been hammering into our noggins from day 1 transactions…. maintaining flexibility to get the right deal done at the right time.

As this post says about $8M in two expiring contracts of Outlaw & Blake, plus some cap space of $7.7Million or less depending on what players may be signed to round out the roster. Plus the ability to throw in a player who, after further opportunities, doesn’t fit clearly with the team or is expendable from the team. So it seems highly likely that Portland will maintain its ability to accept a $10M player at some point between now and the trade deadline from a team who decides to start bailing water. Flexibility.

And even though OKC has cap space, the right deal will happen for the Blazers… I have patience.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
