Utah Radio Reports Jazz Will Match Millsap

The Utah Jazz will reportedly match the Portland Trail Blazers' offer sheet on Paul Millsap.

Here's your link to SLC Dunk. Original report comes from 1320 KFAN, The Jazz's flagship station.

Update: 4:45PM... Ross Siler of the Salt Lake Tribune confirms.

A day ahead of the deadline to do so, the Jazz decided they will keep Paul Millsap by matching the four-year, $32 million offer sheet the restricted free agent forward signed with Portland, a source close to the team said Thursday.

The Jazz's move was widely expected, although they must make a $10.3 million upfront payment to Millsap under the terms of the offer sheet he signed with the Trail Blazers last Friday.

KP just knocked a domino over, hoping that it would catch something else on the way down. Will more begin to fall? I dunno, I guess we’ll see.

Good analogy.

Milsap better be eternally grateful to the Blazers for this huge pay day.

I think it’s for the best. I didn’t like the thought of two high end PF’s competing for minutes. It was easy to envision someone ending up unhappy.

next domino: Boozer trade

no indications that OKC will facilitate, but Memphis looks ready to jump in again. If that happens, take them off the list of cap space teams.

OKC is still there, just waiting to one-up us with their cap space and unguaranteed contracts.

by Cablinasian on Jul 16, 2009 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah, that's my fear too

if you look at the tally sheet, they have 2 of 3 on us:

1) amount of space – OKC 11, Portland 7.7
2) unguaranteed contracts – OKC
3) young talent on cheap contracts – Portland (Rudy, Batum, Bayless)
4) Expring 2010 contracts – call it a push once you factor out the unguaranteed ones

So the only way we can out-offer them is if we are wiling to part with one of the young three, and the team(s) involved want them.

Yea, but do they want to give long term contract worth $14+ million to Boozer?

Or else they are just spending a lot of money for one season. Maybe if the Jazz trade the NY pick, but then they would have absolutely no future in the next few years.

it's not about OKC taking Boozer

it’s about OKC being the biggest threat we have to being a capspace absorber in any 3-team salary dump deal, whether it be Boozer or someone else later.

not sure about that

OKC has two first round picks. They are a younger team. Cheaper owner. They will improve but don’t have aspirations of being a contender next year. They are a risk. But I think OKC wants to be the last team with real cap space left. I think they would love for Portland to make a move first. Whatever the move.

I think they are in a fantastic position. I think they want the draft picks and the cap space coming into draft night. At the very least they are willing to make a major move at the trade deadline. Portland does not want to have to be in that position.

by oregontrail on Jul 16, 2009 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not sure this precipitates trading Boozer, but it makes it a lot more palatable

Trading Boozer wouldn’t be about the money unless Utah includes PDX or OKC in any deal. Otherwise, it’s just about roster balance and jettisoning a player that no longer wants to be there….

by blacknoiseNW on Jul 16, 2009 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Trading Boozer is absolutely about the money...

Which is why Portland, OKC (Said to be disinterested), Memphis (Doubtful after Z-Bo trade) or Sacramento (Doubtful because of poor revenue) has to be involved.

Tony Bennett reports that Minnesota and Portland are swapping draft picks -- Roy to Portland, Foye to Minnesota. That's it? That's the trade? None of the ESPN guys seem remotely fazed. I knew Kevin McHale couldn't just pick the best guy in the draft without somehow screwing it up. I would have bet my Ndudi Ebi rookie cards on it.

NYC draft pick

Utah has NYC’s first rounder next year. Given how New York looks right now. That thing could be solid gold. If Memphis can help facilitate something and pick up an asset like that its a great move.

Or Chris Wallace does it because he is a dolt.

by oregontrail on Jul 16, 2009 6:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Can they afford to be?

While Memphis does have the capspace, like Sacramento, they have terrible revenue problems. After taking on Z-Bo, involving themselves in this trade would put them near the cap on a team with one of the worst attendances in the NBA and an owner who is not interested in taking huge financial losses.

they would get paid enough cash to offset their involvement

just like they did in the 4-way deal.

Memphis can’t/won’t absorb enough contract to allow Utah to take back nothing, but they can absorb up to 3 million and have it completely paid, which would cut 6 million off of Utah’s bill, while still allowing Utah to take back a decent player making 4-6 million.

not saying it's likely

but it is possible. The scenarios for them are essentially either to take back NOTHING and get JUST under the tax line, or take back substantially less than the tax and save some money but still get a player back

Some reports out of Utah are saying that they absolutely want to get SOME talent back for Boozer, and are willing to eat a tax hit for 1 year. If this is the case, then dumping 3-5 million on Memphis and taking back 4-6 million is a possible approach

I agree douglast

The masterful use of the cap space to flog Utah is no failure. This week we are exactly where we were last week but a division rival just got weaker. There may be more such moves ahead as KP forces teams to pay more than they want to keep their RFA’s or FA’s.

Each move makes a rival weaker. Is there any doubt that Toronto is not going to be in the NBA finals with Hedon’t? Then they do not hurt us. Toronto down. Utah down. I don’t know what moves KP has yet to make but this ride is getting more and more interesting. As you say we may go all the way to February and many of us wanted to stand pat all along so even then we will be fine.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the Utah Jazz could be receiving a short-term bank loan to pay for the immediate payments owed to Millsap with his new hefty contract.

My only question is

why did Utah wait so long? They said they were going to, why did it take them five days to make it official? If I were Millsap, I wouldn’t be too happy.

Enough with the epic fail talk. This was a win-win. Even if Utah manages a trade with someone else, that reduces the number of teams left with salary cap. Our trade may not happen until the trade deadline – when some team decides it’s time to cut its losses – but it will happen.

And it will be sweet.

nothing?

-traded Sergio.
-drafted a backup PF, SF, and PG.
-made a competitive offer to Turkoglu
-tried to work a 3 way trade with Chicago & Utah
-signed an offer sheet with Millsap
-put Utah in a tight spot
-tried to work a 3 way trade with Detroit & Utah

yeah, none of it panned out. but KP et al aren’t exactly sitting back and waiting for the deals to come to them.

Here’s some stuff that could’ve happened:
-drafted a guy with a balky knee who never amounts to much in the NBA.
-gave an aging, overrated small forward $12 million to come off the bench two years from now
-gave away a future star (Bayless, Batum, Fernandez) in a desperate attempt to make a trade work.

Sometimes “getting nothing done” is the smart move.

teams ALWAYS wait the full time to match on RFAs

It’s just smart – you tie up a competitor’s money for a week, get plenty of time to consider all ramification of matching or not matching, as well as work the phones for other trades or free agents that may impact your decision to match or not.

Plus, in this case, their was the up front money. May as well hold off as long as possible on having to write that check.

And I don’t think we will be involved in the Boozer deal (most likely Memphis I think), at least we get a while to figure out what we really have. Maybe something will happen at the trade deadline. Whatever, I am happy with the team we have, provided we see improvement out of Greg, Rudy and Batum. Also I think if Bayless doesn’t make enough strides during summer to be point, we just play him to his strengths which would be instant offense off the bench.

we need one more point guard

whether a starting vet, a backup, or a 3rd stringer. Just terrifies me to think of Bayless right now if Blake got hurt, and then giving the backup to someone who doesn’t practice at running the plays

And a PF

To back up LaMarcus (sorry, I don’t trust a rookie).

we could get boozer

and just send him to the d-league. Bring him up if we get into trouble

Send boozer to the D-League?

I am not sure he would go there.

I agree

It would be nice to get at least a third stringer in case of injury. There has to be some aging vet (like Anthony Johnson) who is available.

So I'm thinking (and hoping)

that by the end of next year, nearly all of us will be thankful that none of our suggested (or KP attempted) moves took place. Here’s to hoping that letting the scotch…..I mean the Blazers…mature another year will be just what the doctor ordered.

WE'll still make some moves

But in the very least we locked up Utah from being good for a while.

I still think

Marvin Williams would work. Esp if Atlanta bit the financial bullet and took Outlaw as a partial trade. Marvin comes back to the NW and Trout goes back near home.

Another waste of time

It sure was nice of KP to get Milsap his money up front. How much time and resources
were wasted in this long shot move? Call it a summer after you get Roy and Aldridge
signed.

No not a waste of time

KP kills two birds with one stone and gets the stone back!

Utah is seriously in luxury tax

Utah has to trade Boozer or struggle financially

If Boozer is traded another team will have to eat some cap (not much left)

KP still has his stone.
