Spears: Brandon Roy Pulls Out Of USA Basketball Minicamp
Marc Spears of the Boston Globe is reporting that Brandon Roy has decided not to participate in next week's Team USA camp in Las Vegas...
Sources tell Globe Big Baby, B Roy, D West, D Lee and A Bynum out of USA camp next week in Vegas, Anthony Randolph in.
Full report here.
Here's a description of what B Roy's missing courtesy of USA Basketball...
The July USA Basketball Men's National Team mini-camp will feature practice sessions on July 23 and July 24 at Valley High School, and the mini-camp will be capped by the USA Basketball Showcase, a Blue-White intra-squad game, on Saturday, July 25, 8 p.m. (PDT) at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of UNLV.
The 5 year 80 million dollar speculative question that will surely be discussed: "Did Brandon pull out because he hasn't signed his extension yet?"
Certainly there's always the risk of injury. A more likely explanation is that the low-key, off-the-radar Roy simply decided the trip wasn't worth the hassle. Roy was the biggest name on the list of invitees and it's unclear what he had to prove or gain from participating. Of the 25 players invited Roy and Danny Granger were the only NBA All-Stars -- and Roy's been there twice.
LaMarcus Aldridge, who also has yet to sign his extension, is still planning on attending. And as I wrote last night, Jerryd Bayless and Greg Oden both still seem eager to participate.
-- Ben (benjamin.golliver@gmail.com)
Update: David West is also a 2 time All Star and is reported by Spears to have pulled out of the camp. For some reason his name wasn't on the list of players that had accepted an invitation to the camp. Not sure what's up with that.

His wife
was upset that he’d be traveling so much. His dog threatened to chew up his favorite shows. his child promised dirty accidents every time daddy gave a hug.
Also, he’s secretly playing wow with channing and the guild threatened to expose him if he missed a couple of weeks of ulduar raids.
I know this because my water bottle and digital camera told me so. They do not have names, but they are my sources.
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

There’s no upside for Brandon. With the possibility of injury, not to mention him being the biggest marquee name on the docket.

wise move
Seems like a really wise move.
LaMarcus ought to consider the same thing.
You could lose half your career earnings if you were unlucky enough to suffer an injury during such an outing occurring before you have a long term contract locked up.

It will be OK for LaMarcus to go and work out with some studs. Let’s let Roy save it for the regular season. – Elgin

Yes sir.
It isn’t the worst idea in the world for Brandon to skip the camp.
I would like to see him on the olympic squad someday. Maybe taking Kobe’s spot when he steps down and Brandon is peaking.
I do respect the USA, but Blazer nation is where i’m from.
Turn Greg, Jerryd, and Lamarcus loose to go take on some stiff competition. I really hope Jerryd gets a bigger chip on his shoulder and activatesJerryd Bayless Destroy Everything All The Time Mode.

Business Decision
That’s all it is. You weigh the gain and you weigh the potential loss. Right now for Brando Roy, the potential loss vastly outweighs the gain.
Playing without an extension is not a smart decision.

I'd speculate that Brandon knows he's a 25 year old player
with a 29 year old’s body. He’s going to have to be pretty selective about how many miles he puts on his body during his off seasons for the rest of his career.

It was very hard to see since he was very young and came out of college immediately after a pretty mediocre season where he had poor efficiency, a lot of turnovers and a skinny body.
by Norsktroll on Jul 16, 2009 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He can’t possibly have the miles of a 29 year old.
I realize he had some pretty significant college injuries, and I do take that into account, but technically while he was injured he wasn’t exactly going full speed on the court.
Brandon seems to have an artisan’s mastery at body control. He knows exactly what he can get out of himself, and for the most part he is always able to reach down and sky up for that huge dunk, or leap up for an amazing weak-side block.
The ability to know when to go full speed, and the art of body control will save quite a few years for someone who plays as physical as B-Roy does. He has shown he has more of a Kobe Bryant physical wing career path, and no signs of an epic T-Macish decline. I expect his path to continue to stabilize and grow, Brandon Roy’s intensity, leadership, and work ethic will help make his career long and successful.
Hear me out on this one.
Having 4 years of growth in college probably saved his body. He was growing and gaining skills and confidence at a college level, and taking it easy on his body until he was mature enough for the NBA.
Otherwise he would of been an 18 year old getting the crap kicked out of him by Ron Artest. Less college games still developed Roy while taxing his body considerably less. I am cautiously optimistic that Brandon Roy will be able to have a very long and dominating career.
I look forward to taking my future kid to Blazer games and seeing a statue of B-Roy outside with the plaque titled "Brandon Roy: 13 time all-star. NBA finals MVP: 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2021. NBA MVP: 2011, 2014, 2016, 2020. NBA Defensive Player of the Year: 2013, 2014."
(I can dream, especially about the defensive player of the year)
Oh wait, there’s Nic’s statue with 7 defensive player of the year awards, can’t forget about that.)
Seriously though, if we do have a dynasty brewing I want PA to put giant statues of a 7 man core up at the RG. That would be a good feeling anytime I pull up to the RG. It just feels good to ramble out-loud sometimes.

Slightly OT
But Anthony Randolph is officially a beast. Turns out he was a great pick up by Golden State right after Portland’s draft slot last year. I know KP was thrilled to get Bayless, but I wonder if Randolph was on his radar, at all.
This was difficult to see coming, back then, so maybe not. But I would be pretty surprised if Randolph doesn’t develop into an all-star at the 3. He has the potential to be Batum and Durant rolled into one package, with MUCH better playmaking skills than either of them.
(And no, I’m not basing this off summer league alone – it’s just further evidence supporting what he did last year.)
(I’m also not saying my boy B-Rex was a bad draft choice. Love B-Rex. Not sure he’s ever going to be a point guard, though, I have to admit – and Randolph seems to have better playmaking skills at the three than Bayless does at the one. But hindsight is 20/20.)

True enough
I think Randolph will be a superstar in time, but nobody is better at putting handcuffs on young players than Donnie. In fact, once Utah matches on Millsap, I wouldn’t mind if KP makes a run at liberating Brendan Wright.

I heard he's still growing.
Which I’m not sure is good or bad or true.
For starters, the rumors of Anthony Randolph growing to seven feet tall are indeed true, and he has managed to gain 15 pounds of muscle after spending much of his off-season in the weight room

probably good that brandon isn’t gonna be spending the next few summers trying out for a team where he will be the third or fourth best guard. good for the rest because they can improve their game, but focusing on the NBA is good for B Roy

a sound business decision, but..
not the reason he made it however. he announced long ago he had no intention of going. i think for the same reason that he might be hesitant to play for his country one day.
that reason? yao ming.
a perfect example of an elite athlete breaking down from overuse. brandon is going to be relied upon heavily for the next seven to ten years. he needs his rest, especially since he does seem just the slightest bit brittle.
and just as importantly as the rest? time for his family. brandon has clearly stated when he’s in his uniform he is focused on one thing. winning. while at the same time when he has any spare time at all, it belongs to his family. he is obviously a strong, devoted father and husband, you get the feeling he takes that stuff very seriously, that family is time is precious to him.
so, although it is a sound business decision, i believe it is one he made a long time ago and for very different reasons.

B-Rex was a member of the 2006 USA Men's U18 National Team which won the FIBA Americas U18 Championship, and went on to win a bronze medal in the U19 World Championship
One never stops to learn.
Team: Chris Allen, Jerryd Bayless, Michael Beasley, Jonny Flynn, Donte Greene, Spencer Hawes, Taylor King, Stanley Robinson, Kyle Singer. Coach: Lorenzo Romar (see BRoy). A few of those continued and won a silver medal in the next year beaten by Serbia.
No wonder he said this year Flynn was the best point guard.
