summer league game 2 review
Another summer league game, another summer league loss. But don't fret my dears, the wins or losses as a team don't mean as much as the progress of the individual players. So lets break down some of these guys.
First off, let me just take my hat off to the Houston Rockets. Its almost scary how this summer league match mirrored the regular season teams performances last season. The Rockets were more aggressive (evidenced by the free throw disparity 40-19) and tougher on the boards (rebounding edge 34-29). We were able to stay in it for most of the game with jump shooting but that ran hot and cold--as it usually does--and Houston edged out a win. Seem familiar to anyone? I know finesse players are nice and all, but having some big nasties up front would be a refreshing change.
I'd also like to acknowledge that Chase Budinger was without a doubt the best player on that court. Not saying he will be the best in 1 month, 1 year, 1 whatever, but tonight he looked fluid. He hit shots from everywhere on the floor, moved the ball well, ran the floor and finished with authority. Basically he made it look easy and even though he only scored 17 points, he did it in less than 20 minutes and was extremely efficient. Trust me, he didn't break a sweat out there.
Ok, enough Rocket love.
I don't think anyone really planned on discussing any of our guys outside the mini-3. Cunningham, Bayless, and Pendergraph. Funny thing happened though, Pooh Jeter went OFF in the second half. All 15 points in the second half? 6 beautiful assits? The guy can shoot and pass, unfortunately he has a lot of trouble finishing at the rim (to be fair, all our guys had trouble tonight when Joey Dorsey was in the game) and missed 2 point blank layups. Not something an NBA player usually does. Still, the effect he had on the team when he was running the point (after Bayless was mercifully moved to the off guard position) was clear in the way he pushed the tempo and got guys easy looks in transition. When you look at Bayless' 2 assists and 6 turnovers, trust me, it wasn't because guys were just missing their shots. He was not getting them the ball in good space or setting them up with easy looks. Jeter, in contrast, found guys like Cunningham over and over and over again off the pick and pop and those two just made it look easy out there. If Jeter doesn't play the point in this game the Blazers lose by double figures.
Speaking of Bayless, I suppose its way to early to decide if he can play the point. However, it does not speak well for him when he turns in a performance like this against inferior competition. He rushed a few posessions, got caught in the air more than once, and his critically acclaimed defense looked less than stellar. He scored comfortably when he controlled the ball and shot off the dribble. Unfortunately, he had trouble knocking down spot up jumpers and clearly needs the ball to be effective. Good at drawing fouls, an excellent foul shooter, he also seems to be a very vocal leader to the guys out there. Again, I just don't know what he's going to be able to do in the regular season. Especially when you look at what he and Batum did last summer and then how they developed afterward.
I owe an apology to Dante Cunningham. I said on draft day that he wouldn't even make the training camp roster. It turns out, he may be my favorite player on this summer league team. Always quick to help a guy up off the floor, he really throws his body around and sells out for his team. Sets SOLID screens and is just a real heady player. He is basically the anti-travis outlaw. Not the most gifted athlete, he compensates with good body control and a solid mid range jumper. Nate has told him that he can be a player in this league is he can show he can consistently hit that mid range jump shot and I think he has shown he can. Plays good help defense, and isn't bad one on one either. Its tough to judge Dante and Pendergraph because they're playing out of position somewhat (although Dante can definitely play the 4 on certain occasions). He's also a very good foul shooter and is adept at drawing contact and getting calls. I just like everything about this guy's game. Led all scores with 22 points although some of that was from sheer volume (8-20).
Jeff Pendergaph looked ok to good playing against the much stronger and more physical Joey Dorsey. For those of you who didn't watch any Memphis games a few years ago, you should know that that guy is an animal. I can't really blame Jeff too much but when I saw him give up 2 straight offense rebounds off of missed FREE THROWS, I got a little upset. Pendy (can I call him Pendy?) compensated by showing soft touch around the rim, range on his jump shot, and smart defense by drawing offensive fouls against the agressive play of Dorsey. I could care less about his 11 points though. My concern is his 5 rebounds. In contrast, Bayless had 6 and some guy named Padgett had 7 in less than 10 minutes. Pendy played just short of 30 minutes. Look, we just let a sweet shooting backup PF who had trouble playing D against physical players and didn't rebound well for his size walk to Phoenix for FREE. Pendy needs to show a bit more toughness without fouling (8 PFs) at a Greg Oden like rate. If he can do that he may carve out some minutes for himself this season.

Padgett hustled an showed a surprisingly soft touch around the rim... Too bad he's not more coordinated, but he's big enough to play pro ball somewhere at least...

what I don't get is why they don't just let padgett start at center
and allow pendy to play his 4 spot and cunningham to be the SF. who cares if the team loses, they’re already losing. let these guys play in the positions they can be most successful at.
The Blazers as a whole are far more like my wife than like me in the sense of their physicality on defense.

Well I can't speak for Prunty
But I suspect they wanted to see how Pend would bang against Dorsey, tonight. Both will likely play PF in the NBA, although it’s not certain who the Rocket’s center will be, next year

unfortunately [Jeter] has a lot of trouble finishing at the rim ... and missed 2 point blank layups. Not something an NBA player usually does
Pooh reminded me of Damon “can’t finish” Stoudamire. Yet another PG under 6’ tall who can penetrate but can’t make a lay-in because they’re either out of control or they’re afraid of getting their shot blocked so they throw the ball up early or try to kiss it high off the glass and it jusst trickles out
There was only one Isiah Thomas (master of the bank shot up high off the glass) and not everyone can squeeze the ball up and in-between all of those arms and kiss it off the backboard and into the basket like Rod Strickland.
A word of advice to all short PGs who are good enough to penetrate but not finish…learn a teardrop. Or keep your passport up to date ‘cause you’re gonna need it

are you talking about damon "rookie of the year" stoudemire???
The guy that averaged 13 and 6 over his 12 year career? 19 and 9 as a rookie? Cause I would take that guy in a heartbeat….

Yeah, I don't really get this retroactive Damon hate
The guy made some serious knucklehead moves near the end of his time as a Blazer, but the guy was a solid player. The Stoudamire-led Raptors were one of the few teams that consistently gave the 72-win Bulls trouble, and they had absolutely no one besides Mighty Mouse.
Especially when you factor in the rule changes that make the NBA tailor-made for him now, if we could time travel the 1997 Stoudamire to the 2009 Blazers, he’d be awesome.

yeah, that guy
Mighty Mouse would drive the lane and throw the ball up off the window and a lot of the time (especially in crucial situations) the ball would trickle out
I’ve never been a fan of short PGs, they’re defensive liabilities. As long as Nate is the coach, I don’t expect to see many <6’ PGs get much PT for Portland
Taurean Green was the exception, and he wasn’t around for long…

Pooh can finish at the rim
he did so a couple of times in the first game, but he just seemed to be forcing it a little bit early on last night. After he settled down he went to work, and showed his tremendous skills in both passing and shooting. He would be a great 3rd string point guard for our team because he gives us a completely different look than Blake or Bayless.

I felt that Jerryd Bayless actually didn't do too bad.
He had some nice passes, but the problem was that the players he passed to missed their shots. The only part that worried me was that he turned the ball over some.

Players will miss shots 53% of the time when you pass it to them.

He needs to learn to run the pick and roll and pick and pop. Seriously, if he could run that better he’d look a ton better out there as a PG.

Summer League is BRUTAL!
to watch. Being a huge Blazers fan, it’s hard not to watch, but man, it’s worse than high school basketball. It’s like a pick-up game with a bunch of talented guys working against each other.
I have a feeling Pat Mills would be in the process of stealing Bayless’s 2nd unit job if he hadn’t broken his foot. I wonder if we could trade Outlaw for Conley, or Curry. Of course we can’t write off Bayless just yet, but we need some insurance, and I don’t think Pooh Jeter actually had that great a game, he was just competent, but next to Bayless looked really solid. I have a feeling Bayless will end up becoming a 2 guard, and then it will look kind of bad that we traded JJack, who is a much better player at SG and PG, away to get him.
Still, J-Bay needs to get some confidence. That will go a long way, but it still might not equal NBA PG, if the understanding of the game isn’t there. We need him to have a clue come the regular season, or Blake is going to be playing 40min a game. The bright alternative is Rudy playing some point. It’s not the optimum solution, but I think it is going to happen. Rudy getting a lot more minutes either playing SG while Blake or Roy are PG, and as PG, while Bayless or Roy are SG. The good news is it will solve the concern of some over where Rudy will get the increased minutes he probably deserves, and put Bayless in a role where he can play off the ball, though he still might not get as much playing time as he would if he were PG. Some have said Rudy can’t play the point, but if Turkoglu can do it, Rudy can do it. I have confidence in Rudy bringing the ball up the floor, and making the right pass, which is basically what Turkoglu does with less ball handling skill than Rudy, albeit in a bigger body. Maybe Mills will show up and give us another legit option.
Cunningham was the bright spot of the games so far. If Martel is healthy, we won’t get to see him much, but it’s good to know if Martel or Batum go down, we have someone serviceable, assuming Travis is being traded. Then again, we may have Travis until the trade deadline, in which case, who knows.
Graph is on the way. I have a feeling he will be one of those journeyman guys who provides solid minutes off the bench on a very good team. If we don’t sign Milsap, we may see quite a bit of him. I like his attitude, and he won’t have as much trouble with Dorsey, if Oden or Pryz are behind him.

Funny to read people's comments saying how great Cunningham is and will be after
hearing everyone say how terrible the pick was
