Summer League Game 2: Blazers vs. Rockets Open Thread

BE has landed in Vegas.

I tried to re-enact the airport scene from Bruno and was briefly detained by security.  Thanks to Rip City Project for bailing me out of that jam.

Tonight's game against the Houston Rockets tips at 7PM.  The game will be televised on Comcast Sports Northwest and will be broadcast on 95.5FM The Game.

Time to get settled. Check back for much more later tonight.

Really?

I didn’t know they had HD cameras at the LV league? I’ll try Channel 737 (the Comcast SN HD Channel) but I’m betting its in SD.

either he was kidding

or he doesn’t understand the digital transition. Either of which is fine because god knows “they” made it confusing enough, but digital does not equal HD.

If it’s in HD then it will be on 737. Whether or not road games are in HD or not depends on if CSN wants to lug the HD cameras to away games.

I'm aiming a little lower

I’d take 6 or 7 at 2:1 so long as the number of quasi-assists is still high and he maintains a distributing mindset throughout the game

Other goals for Bayless:
Less than 15 shots at over 50%
At least 3 impressive drives to the hoop (think he has this one covered)
At least one pick and roll play with Pendergraph (is this too much to ask….really?!?)

by MadBlaze on Jul 15, 2009 5:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Pendergraph will have to set his first screen of Summer League for the last-mentioned to occur. I don't reckon that one is on the Rex.

Who cares about A:TO ratio. That’s a dumb stat.

What we want: lots of good passes with not very many bad turnovers.

true enough

there is too much luck involved (ie do your teammates make shots and are your teammates in the right places) to put much stock on ast/to ration from one game. Over a whole season its a good stat, but not for one game.

by jonestr on Jul 15, 2009 5:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Short answer: basketball is art, not science. Good play is in the eye of the beholder, not in some dry ratios on a page.

Long answer: Assists are a bad stat because it overvalues incidental play (the 10 foot pass around the perimeter to a shooter who may or may not make it) and undervalues the truly GREAT passes, which still count as only one assist. The assist is the single most overrated statistic in the game today, I think.

Rebounding and shooting percentage and FT percentage is where it’s at, baby. Assists don’t win games, buckets do.

as far as straights stats go

you could make that same argument about any recorded stat. Over a long period of time though a straight stat will start to tell a story, but game by game they should be taken with a grain of salt.

by jonestr on Jul 15, 2009 6:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree with both of you

A guy who tallies a good amount of assists consistently over time is, generally, a good passer who is unselfish.

Sometimes guys like Iverson or Crawford get good assist numbers, but they are still selfish ballhogs who just happen to have the ball in their hands a lot so they accidentally get assists.

For summer league, the actual assists of Bayless are near-meaningless and just serve to make us feel nice. What really matters is HOW he is passing, whether he is seeing the offense in layers and not straight passes, if he can manage the team on offense, and hit his jumpers.

We know he can penetrate at a good NBA level, and get to the FT line, and score efficiently because of it. What we need to see is the ability to make GOOD passes, and not just get lucky with a nice assist total that is inflated because guys were making their long jumpers.

(Not that you were arguing against that).

Good point.

Like I say, it’s an art, not a science. Watch what you like to watch, stats might point you to trends and answers, but they ultimately don’t win games — unselfish, artistic team play does. Bigs that muck for rebounds and hustle, wings that make their open looks and slash to the rim, snappy passes and uptempo, flowing play.

The worst pseudostat of them all is PER, which attempts to reduce everything to a single number. It’s idiotic to think you can compare Shaq with Yao with Duncan with David Lee with a number on a page. An arbitrary creation of a sports journalist that accomplishes nothing except adding to the fame and income of the journalist.

ehh,

I think there are spots for both guys on this team if they are up to scratch.

Blake/Roy/Batum/Aldridge/Oden

Bayless/Rudy/Webster/Outlaw/Przybilla

Those are all the players currently on our roster, so we have 5 spots for our draft pics and free agent. If we do end up doing a 2 for one (like Blake/outlaw for hinrich), that will leave 6 roster spots.

Bayless

Probably right. They should have plenty of roster spots.

Sergio’s
Frye’s
Shavlik’s
Ruffin’s

So that’s 4 roster spots right there.

If they do any trades that probably won’t cut the number of open roster spots because the purpose of an uneven trade is to get a better player for lesser player or players.

In fact there could even be an additional roster spot opened- for example in that possible trade people were batting around for a while of Blake+Outlaw for Hinrich.

I’m wondering if they will give Patty Mills a roster spot despite his injury. Considering a lot of people pegged him to be a first rounder, seems like it’s worth keeping him and see how he does once his injury has healed.

I think Steve’s game on offense developed pretty well last year, and he had a career season. He didn’t do a TON of creating, but he did a little bit. I don’t like him off the pick and roll, but other than that, he’s a solid offensive point guard.

But the problem on D is that he can’t guard quick PGs OR strong PGs. The quicks he will never get, but he’s a tall dude – why does he weight 170? Can’t he hit the gym, knock down some protein powder, and add 15 lbs. of muscle (focusing on legs and back)? I think it would help.

We should sign Sean May

For the league minimum and put a uniform on him and give Bayless a decent big man to pass inside to.

May is already in Vegas, I see no reason it can’t happen.

DO IT KP.

Guys, let's not get caught up in summer league stats

There’s a bunch of amateurs playing in summer league. Not just players, but referees and scorekeepers. I’m not hanging my hat on any of these stats.

Bayless showed me a couple things in the first game. He made passes off the dribble with his head up. There was a nice alley oop to Pendergraph and a couple of whip passes to the corner. This is important because last year he tended to get caught in the air or the paint without knowing what to do. He was confident, but he ended up pressing in the 2nd half.

There is one problem that was been brought to my attention. Bayless is chasing the ball instead of controlling the ball. You’ll know what I mean when he is trying to dribble around a hedge screen or defender.

I like to see him be in control of the ball. I don’t feel completely safe when the ball is in his hands, similar to how I felt with Jarrett Jack. Hopefully he improves his handle.

Well, he has very nice hands, and a soft touch

It remains to be seen if he was just unlucky with injuries, or if he just isn’t a player. He WAS a good player (at least backup worthy) when he was healthy, which was very rarely.

He has always had weight problems, and has undergone micro and other knee surgeries. If he is in shape, he could be good. if he isn’t, he won’t be.

by Mortimer on Jul 15, 2009 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions

no worries dude

If you look at May’s college numbers they are really impressive and he even put up some nice numbers when he was healthy in the NBA. We might be only one of a few playoff teams that will throw any money at him.

he is definitely a low cost high reward type of guy who could fill the off the bench rebounder/scorer in a Brandon Bass type of role, but possibly with better rebounding.

Pendergraph's going against an NBA level rebounder in Dorsey

and Dorsey has 2 O-rebs. This is one everyone— lots of Houston guards are getting O-rebs and Cunningham allowed a couple also. Pendergraph has not done a good job, but its unfair to single him out.

Nate has players who want to win now, and after winning 54 games last year he’s in agreement with them. They can’t risk a point guard that can’t protect the ball under pressure and doesn’t make good decisions in half-court, even as a backup.

I do agree Bayless needs minutes though, so I hope he spends the whole season in the D-League.

Why

Remember Nic he looked awful in summer league and Bayless was MVP.
Season Bayless hadn’t improved his game in a way to fit into the system gets little playing time all year. Batum worked on Defense and positioning and was able to fit into the system.
Bayless this year is working on thing to improve his game.
If that helps him become a great fit into our team I don’t care how he looks in summer league.

Bayless looked pretty horrible out there as a PG.

He played like Steve Blake without the deadly shooting or the low turnovers.

Just a forgettable game for him. Chalk another game up in the Bayless is not a PG column.

Bayless is fine. Nash couldn't look good in summer league.

Summer league rewards individual play. It’s like spring training for baseball – the trap is believing the .200 player with 0 HR in 160 games is better than the 5-tool #1 draft pick because the sucky guy got on a hot streak against minor league scrubs while the true talent struggled with his timing and adjusting to wood bats.

Developing players takes time. Bayless can get in a zone when you give him the ball and stand back and watch. If you want to control his game, you are going to have to wait till it becomes second nature.

Problem with Bayless is that he has yet to show a bankable skill in the NBA

His drives are hit and miss. The 3-point shooting is broken. His defense is overly aggressive, but not stopping anyone (IE. Sasha Vuijcac). His passing is mediocre.

Bayless is the youngest player on our Roster, younger than now injured Mills.

He is an absoloute physical specimen with a work ethic above most if not all of our roster. There is already clear improvement in his shooting form from last season but it will take months of repitition to improve consistency and accuracy. He is showing a greater will to pass, compared to bulldoze and munch on competition and he isn’t quite as foul happy.

This is satisfactory to me in terms of improvement.

Our offensive system requires heavy usage of the shooting guard, the point guard often merely swings the ball or sits in the corner waiting. While this is not an ideal use of Bayless’ talents, it nonetheless reduces his usage. Rudy will love the extra ball handling (not that I’m too entusiastic) and the development of key role players will also mask some lackings in his game, if he wants to go all T Rex once in a while and drive aggressively, it will make a change from jump shots, pick and pops and threes.

The system is set up to take advantage of the strengths of the roster and mitigate the weaknesses.

Blake shouldn’t be allowed to try and create shots in the pick and roll very much. Sergio was allowed more freedom because he could play off the dribble and create shots for others. Blake’s bread and butter is controlling the tempo, getting the ball to the right people, minimize mistakes, and hit the open 3.

Bayless doesn’t yet have a bankable skill to be used in an offensive system or we are asking too much of him. He will probably be relegated to a similar role like Jannero Pargo or Bobby Jackson in the future if he is going to be successful. Scoring spark plugs off the bench. The Blazers summer league is trying to see if Bayless can be anything else, but I think the answer is clear.

by blzrfan on Jul 15, 2009 9:23 PM PDT up reply actions

The answer is clear? After two summer leagues, one college season and 19 real games?

If we are tweaking the plays run between second and first units, Bayless’ strength is getting to the hoop and drawing contact, which would contrast nicely with the second unit devoid of anything other than jump shooters. While he won’t dish as well as Sergio, he will still score while Rudy tries to drum up some offense.

Bayless doesn't have a dependable strength in the NBA.

It’s hit or miss when he drives. He could a draw foul, make the shot, turn it over, get blocked, or just plain miss it. Any of those outcomes are probable and that’s not good.

He really needs to improve.

Bayless is young and driven

Unfortunately, he does not have point guard skills right now.

He will not develop them playing under Nate McMillen, because Nate will not play a guy who has 9 assists versus 12 turnovers in summer league on a team with championship aspirations.

The Blazers need to send Jerryd to the D-League for the whole season. Not just a game or two, but from the opening tip to the championship game. They should send a coach to Idaho with him. They should insist he get minutes only at the point guard position. He needs to get some minutes playing the point, getting a feel for how to run an offense, when to pass and when to shoot. That’s not going to happen in Portland, so it’s either get him minutes in the D-League or trade him.

by baduk on Jul 15, 2009 9:32 PM PDT reply actions

Very few teams use the D-league for player development, it seems to me.

If it was a true farm system, like Minor League baseball, it would be much more interesting. The NBA should let teams expand their roster by 3 more players, but 3 players would always have to be rostered with their affiliated D-League team. Seems like the NBA should get serious about utilizing the DL.

Too often it’s marginal guys trying to get into the NBA, instead of young NBA guys getting better with experience.

You don’t need to rely on teammates for batting or fielding. It’s mostly up to the individual player. Basketball is much more dynamic and the roles on the court can change a player’s productivity immensely.

When he’s averaging a 3:1 assist to turnover ratio in the D league in significant minutes, then he can have another shot at backing up the PG spot in Portland. As it stands with his skill set, he’s not capable of doing that even in summer league.

i think we are in a special situation bc of our depth

i’m not a hater (unless im playing devils advocate) but I don’t think the problem is bayless’ skills. he has nba quickness, and a lot of intangibles. i think the d league might be helpful for him to learn the game and make decisions. i’m not sure of what type of offense the stampede run, but even if it isn’t similar to ours, bayless should be there to stay sharp and be exposed to situations so that he can make better decisions.

your overlooking the single most critical transition skill -

the ability to finish. That you consider breaking down the defense a “half court” skill is irrelevant to his ability to either put the ball in the basket or draw the foul. That is THE primary transition skill. Even fast-break guards like Nash are nothing without finishers.

by blacknoiseNW on Jul 15, 2009 10:23 PM PDT up reply actions

a finisher on the fast break needs to be able to do more than finish

finishing is obviously critical but knowing how to run the court on a break is what makes this skill beyond a “half court” skill… transition requires getting the full court game…

If you didn’t know how to transition, you wouldn’t be highly effective at scoring off the break. Rex is just that – an excellent transition offensive talent. If you want to question his ability to “lead” a fast break, you might have an argument. However, taking advantage of the defense is exactly what transition offense is supposed to do, and that is what Rex does best.

A certain All-Star point guard named Steve Nash

was in his 5th season before he could rack up more than 5 apg or score more than 10ppg. He was in his 9th season before he averaged double digit assists.

Much is made of what a “point guard” is. Turn Bayless loose, and he would be as productive as most 1st or 2nd year point guards. I predict his passing will always be set up by his scoring, but that doesn’t make him a non-point guard.

by blacknoiseNW on Jul 15, 2009 10:39 PM PDT reply actions

All true

But that’s not productive enough for a team that has championship aspirations.

Nate won’t play him with his current skill set, he has players that want to win now, and they can’t do that with Jerryd’s current level of productivity as a backup point guard. If they can’t swing a trade for a starting point guard and move Blake to the backup, look for them to sign a veteran backup point guard for those minutes.

I just got back from my friend's house, who has digital cable and DVR'd the game on CSN earlier tonight.

I’ll keep this short and simple, since I feel no need to expand on this topic.

1. Jerryd Bayless’ pitiful dribble-drive game — which took me-first ballhogging to a whole new level — made me laugh in vindication the entire night.

2. Jeff Pendergraph and Dante Cunningham will form a so-so third-string frontline over the next two seasons, but that’s it. While they both have potential to be solid backups, the time for that isn’t now and for them it’d be best to get some D-League experience this season. I, howeer, will say the Cunningham pick has gone from a D- to a C — at least in my book — during the past few days.

3. Chase Budinger blowing past Bayless near the end of the game — in which the lesser fo the two Arizona guards got blasted on a sweet screen set against him — should quite anybody who believes the diminutive non-point guard is anything but a terrible defender.

Stupid people have stupid ideas.

As a fan of Chase Budinger, I still managed to really enjoy tonight's game.

If Budinger puts out the necessary effort, he could be the next “Thunder” Dan Majerle. Budinger has a first-rate mentor to teach him the ropes, too, with Brent Barry on the Houston Rockets roster.

Budinger’s athleticism on the wing also makes James White expendable, so I definitely expect him to be waived this fall. At this rate, Rick Adelman won’t miss Von Wafer and his antics whatsoever.

Yea, Budinger will be perfect on the Rockets for getting 20ish energy minutes off of the bench this season.

I’d like to even believe that much about Bayless right now.

you're a Budinger fan? really?

is there any American white guy you aren’t a fan of?

Yeah, there's plenty of them.

Troy Murphy, Luke Ridnour, J.J. Redick, Brian Scalabrine, Aaron Gray, Matt Carroll, Chris Mihm Quinn, Travis Diener, Chris Quinn, Jake Voskuhl, Paul Davis, Adam Morrison — although I like him as a unique guy in the NBA — Brian Cardinal, Ryan Bowen, Sean Marks, Mark Madsen, et al.

haha

fair enough. I like Murph and Rid (though I might not if I was a Sonics fan).

Troy Murphy epitomizes both of the two glaring flaws in WoW, while Luke Ridnour ...

bugs me from my years as a Sonic fan. Although I dislike Murphy the most currently, my disdain for Ridnour was strong as titanium back in the day.

With a forward tandem of Troy Murphy and Danny Granger, Jim O'Brien ...

must realize that starting Jeff Foster at center over Roy Hibbert is a necessity.

Dahntay Jones should fit in okay with the Indiana Pacers at shooting guard, but he most likely won’t be any better than Marquis Daniels was this past season.

Brandon Rush must improve, too, for otherwise he’ll be just an average backup at the wing positions. Also, Larry Bird should bite the bullet and offer up Jamaal Tinsley to the Memphis Grizzlies for Marko Jaric.

While Jaric was indeed a shell of his former self last season, he could produce satisfactory numbers if given a defined role. With Jarrett Jack likely headed off to Toronto to join buddy Chris Bosh in the Great White North, Jaric could possibly come right in and fill his spot.

Jaric would be just the fourth win on the depth chart, though, with Travis Diener and A.J. Price fighting for minutes behind T.J. Ford at the point.

Y'all can disregard the accidental use of "Quinn" twice in my above comment.

I was cutting and pasting the names of those guys, so an accident was bound to happen.

From a basketball standpoint, I like Budinger due to his athleticism and versatility ...

on offense. It’s true, though, that Budinger does seem to be a bit lazy and disinterested at times.

Budinger does get some extra props from me, however, as he’s a living and breathing doppelgänger of the late, great Layne Staley. While that’s a fatuously superficial reason to like a bsketball player, it’s still a reason for me nonetheless.
