Around SBN: The Most Dangerous Division in Sports

Tyler Bleszinski aka "Blez" is the founder of Athletics Nations, the first (and probably still largest) blog on SBN. He still serves as founder and editor in the executive management for SB Nation. He commented on the issue below a post he wrote on a mixed martial arts blog on SBN called "Bloody Elbow".

It's pretty much what Dave has always said for why comments aren't editable, but there you have it from the man himself. A few comments below he recommends a simple fix: The preview button :-)

"Editing comments would open things up to all kinds of shenanigans
Where people could bait others then delete it out so no one could see it. It would destroy the natural flow of conversation. I view it sort of like having a conversation in real time. Sometimes you make a mistake and wish you didn’t say something, like Brock Lesnar, but you just come back and apologize for it in the result press confer…I mean comment.

As for the ability to send private messages to others, we’re talking about doing that in our list of tech priorities for sure."

H/T to Sabonis4Ever who came across this.

Where is S4E?

Haven’t seen him since my work slowed down and I could get back here.

There could be a time limit for the "edit" function

I’ve seen this on other forums. You get a couple of minutes to fix typos after htting “submit” but if you edit the comment right away there’s a date stamp at the bottom that reads “message edited 12:30pm, 7-15-09” So it’s clear to everyone that you retracted (or added something to) your original comment

SBN will probably never go this route, but it would be nice if they did

but if you edit the comment right away

should’ve read "but if you don’t edit the comment right away "

you see what I’m talking about? If there was a “quick edit” feature I could’ve easily inserted the word don’t in the above sentence in the original comment without being “time stamped”

I sure wish SBNation would deal with the DOG SLOW plage loads..

not to mention the frequent browser lock ups that I encounter waiting for the page to scroll down. As far as a lots of data or bandwidth issues: I can have a smoothly operating streaming video working without a hitch, so why can the same computer/data link not load a text page with a few avitars ??? Blazersedge stands out as the problem page hanging up my computer over any other, sometimes much more interactive, page.
It is to the point that I really cannot comment in a timely manner because I the page is so hung up trying to just display. It has been this way for way to long. The “turn off updates” did not fix it. The “no graphics” did not fix it. Am I the only one who is really tired of this dysfunctionality? I basically think SBNation, ah, is terminally weak. They just want to rake off the advertising revenue with a minimum of service. It is even overloaded with SUMMER LEAGUE ! At this rate we are dead in the water come regular season games. Things are far from OK going forward. How is this not even mentioned in the “enhancements” we need? Maybe SBN just figures BEdge is just not worth the hassle, since we have noted the anemic participation in varouls other team sites. Summer is the time to make a significant change.
I would love it if we would just dump them for another provider, or write our own. Yeah, that would have its problems, but we could do something about them, and keep the income “in house”. I have felt that way a long time, and SBN has delivered little to change my mind. Just more obnoxious adds to pad their pockets. As far as the name goes, they can have it if we can dump them. The vast majority of readers would follow Dave/Ben to whatever site we come up with. Probably won’t happen, so SBNation can keep laughing all the way to the bank.
