What The Blazers MUST Do to get Odom
By award winning columnist John Canzano -------------Not Really
Lamar Odom possesses an incredibly versatile game that would work with the Blazers lineup. He's not the most consistent player but he would make this team better. Getting Odom would also let the Blazers trade other assets for another player.
But if the Blazers want Odom it won't be easy.
Odom wants to live by the beach, he wants to live where the weather's nice. He wants to be able to drive around in his convertible with the top down. Portland doesn't offer much of this. The coast is over an hour away, it rains most of the year. And the Blazers can't forget about Odom's penchant for sweets.
If the Blazers really want to get Odom, they're going to have to pull out all of the stops.
To get Odom Blazers management must take him to the beach on a nice day, they have to show him every candy factory in Portland and prove to him that Portland is viable city for someone with a sweet tooth. If Odom wants sunshine, management needs to let him live where he wants and fly him in for games and practices. If the Blazers fail to do these things they've proved that they can't attract free agents and all hope for a championship disappears.
If the Blazers fail at attracting Odom the fans should stop attending games and let management know that they're not happy.

Only if he changes his name.
Already having an Oden, it would be too confusing adding an Odom. He would have to change his name like some players have to change jersey numbers.
Any suggestions what his new name should be?
Lamary Odominic?
Or how about LO
Or Head butter
Or Roy Knocker
Or Punk
Or we could call him “The final piece”

I heard someone in Cincy doing this...
Didn’t turn out too well.
He could change his name to Lamar Siete, and then have to wear something other than 7 as we already got #7 you know who.

Lamarcus Odun
Because that’s what Rice will call him anyway

lol... there is no beach in Oregon
The beach is warm and you can swim in the water and there are hot girls in bikinis. Oregon doesn’t have beach it is called the coast and you bring a sweater. Maybe the Blazers could hire a bunch of hot women to hand out at a local river or lake and pretend that is what it is always like.
Who cares about beaches in any State??
Portland is about winning NBA Championship (s)….Pay Odom his midlevel exception somewhere else…
I hear you... Odom will never win a NBA championship.

As much as I hate the L*kers
I do believe he just did get a ring. Unless you meant he’ll never win another NBA championship.
Beacon Rock state park
that may be the place to take him, on a 90 degree day

I hate Lamar Odom!
He is one of my top three most hated players in the league…all of pro sports!
There is Kobe, Ricky Davis and Odom. However as a blazer i could come around. but the non-sense of flying him in for games and practices? what a little girl…take his candy, put him on a nutritional program and get him a smart car to drive from L.O. to the Rose Garden.
those are my demands. if he wants to play here, lets get a real player. not just a headcase who will decide if he wants to play tonight or not.
why would you waste your hate
on a crappy player like Ricky Davis? When has that guy earned a hate status? If your gonna hate someone they have to be good or on a winning team (like Bruce Bowen, not very good but on a good team) Ricky Davis is not good, and he has never been on a winning team.
When has that guy earned a hate status?
IIRC Ricky called the baby Blazers “cockroaches” back in 2004-2005

Exactly!!
I have been suprised by all of the pro Odom stuff Ive been seeing. But the fact is that THE GUY IS A THUG! Odom would have fit in better during the Jailblazers era! Him and KGarnett are The Worst bad guys in the league! Keep him away!!!!

I didn't know that search function was available.
I did a search for poop, and surprisingly, Mortimer is listed more frequently than you. I thought you had a monopoly on poop.

Odom Is Overrated
Odom is very inconsistent and won’t play 100% for the Blazers.
I never understood this argument, that he won't play %100
So what? Maybe he just knows his own body and gears it down occasionally. I have seen Rudy take nights off for sure, and I don’t blame him. I would like to see Roy just cruise more often… he probably wouldn’t have looked so worn down in the playoffs. Maybe I am off base here, but Odom brought it all in the playoffs when it counted.
Even 50% effort from Odom would be a big step up from the 25% effort that Outlaw gives us.

I am not a huge Odom fan (probably because he is a L*ker) but his 50% beats Trouts 100% every day of the week.
Love him or Hate him, he gives us another threat, and creates the most dominate Front line in the nba, bar none.

to add to your idea...
Odom gave 110% in the playoffs when it mattered. Part of being a good team is caring less about the season and more about the playoffs. I remember when the Lakers got out to a hot start people were asking Phil Jackson if he thought they could win 70. His response was something along the lines that they were not even going to try to win that many. Something is to be said for saving it for the playoffs. Look at the Blazers they were balls to the walls the last month of the season and for what? to get bounced out in the first round. Not trying to hate just trying to keep it real.
Short of KP coming up with $50M/5 LA is matching, bank on that.
"A bizarre and extremely rare hybrid Blazer/Laker fan, Timbo has always struggled to contain the Beast Within, like Dr. Jekyll, Bruce Banner, or Ted Kennedy." — Miled Animal
I am not sure about this...
but I think that unrestricted free agent means the Lakers wont have a chance to match. Although I guess Odom could take the offer back to the Lakers and use it as leverage.
He could, but
if he can get over the whole (Beach, Sun, Candy) thing, he will probably be too pissed to go back to the Lakers.
One would have to think that he would enjoy playing for the one team that can consistently wreak havoc with the Lakers.
Odom adds 5 wins to our team, and costs the Lakers atleast 5 games. Huge plus for us.
by TrailBlazer4Life on Jul 15, 2009 10:38 AM PDT up reply actions
you’re forgetting Odom WANTS to stay in LA. As the first half of this post is talking about….. he loves the beach/weather/etc.
He is just going to use whatever contract offer he gets from another team to leverage the lakers into giving him the same contract. I dont think he is gonna find one better than 4 years 36 million
obviously he doesn’t want to stay in LA that much if he’s going to reject a 4 year 36 million offer or a 3 year 30 million offer.
I'm fine if he does use it
for Leverage. Still hurts the Lakers, but not as much as stealing him would

Every Blazer fan should read the article on Odom in SI.
There is a link to it in the fanshots.
adreed
the guy has gone through a lot in life, and while in previous years he might have been a jailblazer, now he is probably a pretty good guy, the emotional leader of the lakers, and someone they would not want to loose.
Odom
His good buddy is Artest.
I like his length but only if they can sign Odom for 2/$20.
He’ll be back on the Lakers.
We have a more legitimate shot at millsap or big baby.

some of us got it...
and it was funny but a lot of fans are wound so tight about what
the Blazers are going to do with their cap space that they can’t, or don’t
want to let go of their angst. It’s all good. I don’t see Odom signing here
but it’s fun to talk about what the Blazers would have to offer him.
There won’t be any new FA news until Friday when Utah matches the
Millsap offer. Go Blazers!

Wheels on Courtside the other night
talking to one of his media friends who said Odom was good people, his “favorite player to come through the Clipper organization”
no one is perfect, the most important question is would LO make the Blazer’s team better in the post season?

Certainly would
no doubt about it. But he isnt coming to Portland

if he's already talking about going to Dallas
then there’s no reason KP should hesitate pursuing LO, as well.

ha!
Favorite player to come through the Clipper organization is like the greatest warrior in France.
You mean Napoleon?
He was pretty good, as I recall. Although he has this complex named after him. Also, more of a PG.

its not a must
i won’t be up in arms if we don’t get odom, but i think it would be a smart move and i wish the blazers would make a move, really don’t want to see cap space and expiring contracts go to waste again, after the shareef expiring deal got us nothing
When is the cutoff
for Utah to match? Friday? Saturday? What time?

i believe
it is friday at midnight (eastern i think).

Odom
Everytime I think of him, I picture the time he passed the ball to Vujacic who was on the bench at the time.
"I been ridin' the midnight train, got ice water in my veins." -Bob Dylan
"Sasha? That's a sissy name." -Mike Rice
Phil Jackson just can't run the 6-man play like Nate can
Lakers tried, but Vujacic was not smart enough to step on the court before receiving the ball.
At least he found the open man, unlike Outlaw who just puts his head down and shoots.
I couldn’t count how many times Rudy was wide open for a 3-pointer when Outlaw launched one of his crummy shots last year.

I am even more sold on Odom... he brings the intangibles
like trick plays. Also maybe they will tally a few of Oden’s fouls in Odom’s column so that Greg can stay on the floor longer.
take him to the beach?
Okay, I hope you are joking. If we really want Odom pay him the money he wants. We offered Turk 50 mil. I think Odom is a better overall player than Turk. I don’t think the Blazers really want him though and I don’t think he wants to come here. I say be patient at this point. Someone will be willing to dump salary at the trade deadline and the Blazers will have opportunity there. Plus it gives time to evaluate Bayless, Oden, Batum and Martel’s progress and improvement which will give better insight into what their needs really are.
