Rebecca Haarlow's Sports Broadcasting Camps
Blazers sideline reporter Rebecca Haarlow is running a series of camps this summer for both students and adults who are interested in meeting her breaking into the sports on television business. The camps will be run here in Portland and will take place in the actual television studios the crew uses during the season.
A great opportunity, it would seem, for Blazers diehards and aspiring broadcasters alike.
Ms. Haarlow's camp promises that you will...
- Learn to call and analyze an NBA game
- Learn the keys to a successful sideline report
- Learn to break down anchor copy and make the best choices
- Learn to work and interact with a co-host
- Learn to use a teleprompter while incorporating your personality
For more information, simply visit RebeccaHaarlow.com and click the "Sports Broadcast Camp" tab on the left menu.
On a somewhat related note, due to overwhelming demand, the application period for the Blazers Edge Sports Blogging Training Camp is now closed. Those of you who were selected for this elite program will be notified by email. Please bring your own Red Bull, wireless mouse and Pendergraphing calculator, as well as a bagged lunch. I look forward to meeting all of you!
One final note: the Tony Luftman Broadcasting Camp has been pushed back until after the conclusion of the Slam Ball playoffs. Thanks for your patience.

I wouldn't say her work is lacking
And I gotta appreciate the initiative in making the most of her situation. Who’s to say whose idea this is.
If she has access to studio space, she has associates sharing in this. So, more power to her.

Actually considering Sideline Reporter is kind of a lame job in the first place
I think she does a nice job of it.
She gets injury updates quickly which are the most important thing a sideline reporter does. She has a rapport with the players. And she looks good.
What more do you want from a sideline reporter?

being able to motion control shooting and stealing...
But the lack of Franchise mode, being able to edit players or create custom players (i.e. myself/you), lack of roster updating, and relatively low-quality graphics make me regret the purchases. Bought 09 thinking it was a massive upgrade to 08 due to the online representation; wish I hadn’t wasted the $50
Hopefully it gets better next season but definitely rent it first. And once they come out with the new gyros for the Wii-motes the control should be massively improved (almost impossible to block shots or time rebounds due to horrible sensitivity)

But for host/sideline reporter work, she does a good job. There are always lots of flubs and miscues that we don’t always see from home, and she handles them very well and always keeps it moving. That is harder then it sounds.

Sideline reporting is never “good”, all you can ask is for the reporter to keep things running smooth and pay attention. She seems to take her job seriously, is always prepared, and handles all the constant miscues of the broadcasts.

That is prolly true
I don’t remember specifics about them that stand out, but it wouldn’t surprise me to be true.
I also don’t mean to imply she is the absolute best sideline reporter the world has ever known, but she gets a lot of grief for being a purty gal and her intelligence and worth is often impugned because of her looks. She seems smart to me, takes it seriously, and in the world of local sports broadcasts where everyone is coasting or not even paying attention, she seems to be doing well.
Having a camp for sideline reporting is funny, since it’s such a specialized field that will result in many disappointed souls if that is their specific career choice. If the camp deals more with being a general TV Host, that’d be different, although still very specialized and not real likely to be a good career choice— though I know lots of people trying to be hosts, and I feel bad for ’em, so Haarlow is doing very well to do what she do.
There’s more TV Hosting jobs than NBA jobs, and basketball camp isn’t seen as silly, so I dunno. I think she’s smart to make some coin!

Sexism is sexism
Regardless, I find neither the comments about Batum or Haarlow to be sexist. A lot of people think Batum is hot. A lot of people think Haarlow is hot. People pointing this out in humerous ways doesn’t bother me one bit.
Shoot, most of these things are true.
“So she’s going to teach the next generation how to hit on athletes?”
She really does seem to hit on LMA at times.
“She’s right up there with Erin Andrews. I might have to check this out.”
They are both hot, how is it sexist to say so, but it’s not sexist to point out how hot Batum or Tony Parker are?
“When is the Blazer Dancer Camp?
I’m interested in attending watching.”
Lots of guys like watching chicks dance, this isn’t news. This also isn’t sexist. It’s how our species was made to be.
Now if someone made a comment like “I’d only pay Haarlow 400 bucks to come to my place and (insert whatever here)” then it would be a sketch comment. I’ve yet to see anything like that though.
Taking shots at Haarlow for her looks and sketchy reporting is no different than taking shots at Damon for his weed fiasco, Rodman for his tattoos, Sergio for balding hair, or anything else. We make fun of people based on what they do and how they look. SHOCKER.

Someone made an innocent comment about how calling things like this a camp seemed wrong because you aren’t doing the normal activities involved in camping, and I saw the humour in the comment and exploited it. It was harmless. Not everyone will get it, and if you do get it and are still offended by it that’s a personal issue and you shouldn’t read things posted on public forums.

Well I guess I'm sexist.
But not by my definition. Because I believe that there should be absolutely no social distinctions based on gender. I oppose all forms of gender roles, and even gender-specific words and pronouns. I think that what gender someone is should be completely ignored except when you are thinking about sex. That said, I think it’s okay to think about sex any time you want to.
In my perfect world, gender would not exist as a social concept, and people would not identify with being one or the other. There would not be two categories of dressing, etc. (there could be more, or fewer, or just a whole spectrum). There would not be separate sports leagues for men and women, just different leagues based on ability or height or whatever, and if the top leagues tended to be dominated by men no one would care because they wouldn’t think of men and women as two different things.
That’s how I think of them: as the same thing. I have absolutely no opinion on how a person should act or how they should be treated that is based on what gender they are. I don’t think that only men should perform certain roles or that women should have doors held open for them more or that it’s okay to punch a man but not a woman.
But, since I value sex highly and I have noticed that only women can perform that role for me, I am sexist.
Keep in mind that everything I know about basketball I learned on Blazers Edge.

Sexism is not sexism anymore than obscenity is obscenity or racism is racism or , but yea, sure… summing up someone’s profession in the most unthoughtful, simplistic way to pay extra special attention to how they look (and they are actually women infinitely more often than men in this situation) in a dismissive way is what people do.
Doesn’t make it okay, really. And your examples aren’t great.. maybe if someone were to take shots on how unattractive and boring the women in the wnba are it would make a better example.. o yea right

So you seriously think that Haarlow and Erin Andrews are the peak of female sporstcasting? You don’t think that maybe, possibly, that they were put there because of their looks? We made fun of Tony Luftman for being bad at his job as well.
I am just seriously shocked that you think that they are good at their jobs. If you know you wanted to promote female sportscasting, I would probably say something along the lines of:
1) These women are jokes, why aren’t there any women who actually know the game on the tv?
2) There are thousands of female college basketball players who got degrees in journalism that could actually add something to the sideline reporting, as opposed to a Track & Field athlete, and Erin freaking Andrews.
And as an aside, comments have been made by several people here about a certain French basketball player, that have absolutely nothing to do with his on-court performance. And yet now: OMG!!!! THIS IS SOOOOO SEXIST!!!!

I think that saying that rebecca harlowe doesn’t contribute anything to a television broadcast is a more than reasonable statement that isn’t being called out here..
Saying that at least she is good looking
also, why do so many people assume that you can turn a sexist/racist statement on its head and that changes everything? Why does the reality of power differentials throughout history and today, right now throughout our society, get so easily ignored when people from groups with power try and subvert statements to say that it is all the same thing.
I don’t think Sophia ever advocated Batum being a Blazer merely because he is adorable.. the kid can ball. It’s not like these comments are taking Harlowe’s looks as an aside to the question of her sideline reporting prowess… her looks are consistently the only thing that people talk about.. and sometimes disrespectfully so..

its because everyone has already agreed that her reporting isn't up to snuff.
Like I said, we already ripped Luftman a new one for this.
Its doesn’t change everything, its after showing that there are better ways of combating sexism, such as advocating for a woman who, you know, has some expertise in this area (which neither Andrews nor Haarlow have), that calling this out when you do it yourself is hypocritical. Its the whole before you help get a sliver out of your neighbor’s eye, take the log out of your own eye first. Oh and check the comments, long before Batum had even suited up, Blazerfan1 was already professing her adoration of him.
My post was focused on the fact that women in sports should be knowledgeable, not eye candy, and Haarlow and Andrews do not have the background, history, and have not shown in their reporting the knowledge that would provide useful information from the sideline.
Probably a part of it is the questions they are told to ask the teams are “How are you feeling?” and “What are your thoughts on the first half?”. Not exactly top shelf questions, and they serve to insulate them from their lack of knowledge about the sport. That is the power differential, knowledgeable women (and believe me there are plenty) are not being given these jobs because they are not attractive enough. Which is the real BS; people calling out the fact that they are bad at their jobs and merely serve as attractive sounding boards, or that they have these jobs and are in sports media, when women who actually have knowledge of the subject matter are being locked out?

You make excellent points
1. I didn’t see your comments called out by BF1, and I don’t think they would be.
2. The system is the problem, not people, and I don’t know why Harlowe deserves comments like BF1 quoted made about her. Snide comments suggesting that her talent is looking sexy and flirting with players.
3. Cheryl Miller and Nancy Lieberman find work based more on their HOF status than anything else. Doesn’t necessarily even mean that I like them as reporters either.
4. I don’t think BF1’s eyes have a log in them. I may need to dig through ancient comments, but I am going to bet that I will not find a genuinely sexist comment made in regards in Batum being worth the sum of his good looks.

I believe in the post where we saw Batum, Ike, (and maybe bayless?) introduced with jerseys
would be the best place to look for number 4.
3) I’m not sure what you want in reporter’s then, I at least prefer people who have intimate knowledge of the sport…
2) I don’t think they’re that snide, I kind of think they’re calling her out, as was done with Luftman “a haircut and a catchphrase” is a nice way to describe him.
1) I don’t think so either, and am not so sure why they are being called out here…

4. I’ll look. 3. Intimate knowledge is great. Lots of really bad male commentators have plenty of intimate knowledge of the game but are horrible at calling the game/commentating. No point here, just an observation that there is maybe more to it 2. Agree to disagree, at least a couple of those quoted comments are pretty snide for this thread. 1. Maybe because this thread got overtaken with people trying to marginalize rebecca merely for being a reasonably attractive sideline reporter?

yea..
I really dislike Harlowe’s work.. no kidding.. I literally will leave the room when she is coming on at times. Sometimes i feel seasick when she comes on. I don’t even know who a great sideline reporter to compare to.. I don’t know if she is lacking skills or knowledge or what.. I just don’t like what she does in her role. I don’t dislike her or want to belittle her career or her efforts to try and educate people on the haarlowe school of sideline reporting.. let alone her looks or such.. but, like i feel about mayonnaise, I would just rather my blazer sandwich didn’t have her on it.
but on a similar note.. i sometimes have to turn the sound off because I cannot remove Rice from Barrett… and I despise him even more because he is always talking.. between rice and haarlowe.. I will occasionally choose tnt over the local broadcast and i don’t like most of the tnt crew either…
but gender and attractiveness are entirely moot points in it. I just feel that their contributions fail to add and occasionally even detract from my game watching experience, which, otherwise, is pure gold.

your two points are not sexist at all
i have the right to say Nic Batum is hot and i adore him. I also can say his 3 point shot is mediocre and his defense proved very effective and crucial in many wins this season.
Rebecca Haarlow is beautiful, in my opinion, and I respect her achievements such as graduating from an Ivy League university and working in a male dominated field. I also admire her genuine adoration of sports. I do not think she is specifically gifted at broadcasting and has several facial ticks which make it hard to focus on what she is saying on camera. She also seems to relay useless information and sometimes wears clothing that I feel is innapropriate.
I find the fact that she is holding a broadcasting camp, at $400 a pop no less, to be a bit ridiculous because I do believe she could use a little training herself. This is why I do not support Rebecca Haarlow’s camp. I would feel the same way about Mike Barrett, Tony Luftman and Mike Rice (although his ‘quirks’ i find endearing).
This, my friend , is a respectful and decent critique of Rebecca Haarlow.

It makes plenty of sense
We make fun of any and everyone who deserves it. Yet when we make fun of Rebecca it’s apparently sexist. That isn’t right.
And before you complain about her being made fun of for looks, I already covered that area.
1. 90% of the people here are guys, naturally the females will have more looks related comments.
2. Most NBA players are too normal looking to be made fun of.
HOWEVER
People make fun of Barkley for being fat
People make fun of Sergio for going bald
People make fun of that one dude who has no eyebrows
People make comments about wanting to sex up Batum, Ariza, Lebron, Rudy, and so on.
I never saw anyone complaining about sexism there.
And to beat a dead horse even more!
PETA does a lot of good stuff. However, they do some stupid stuff like yell at Obama for swatting a fly. So now, all people remember about PETA is the stupid stuff they do, and most of their good work gets ignored. PETA is their own worst enemy.
The exact same thing has been happening with the feminist movement for the last few decades now and the movement doesn’t seem to be figuring this out.

My points, in fact, are just so...
1. Just because it isn’t surprising or rare, doesn’t make it not sexist. In fact, it makes it worse. Why?
2. Statements made by people about people should be understood in context of the societal power system. Huh?
3. It is different for an individual from within a group of traditional power to offhandedly belittle someone else’s (from a group with traditionally less power) profession and humanity than the other way around. It is not right in any way, however, no matter who does it.
4. I don’t mind people thinking someone is hot. I think lots of women are hot, sometimes I’m even short sighted enough to blurt this out. My efforts in addressing my own sexist baggage is to avoid allowing myself to simplify women and their worth by their attractiveness. The fact that society clearly gives certain benefits (at high costs) to more attractive people is just like saying everyone does it. I like to hold humanity to a higher standard.
5. And, to the point, Haarlowe may or may not be a decent sideline reporter.. I certainly do not enjoy what she brings to the Blazer telecasts, and I doubt her own mom could say she is the best. I can also see that many people would find her attractive. LIke you said, these are obvious facts.. to some degree. But why does the need to make rude/witty/comments and these “obvious facts” have to get combined in a way that is clearly dismissive to the professional career of someone who did work to be in the position that she is in?
Final thing to note (from your other comment)! Sumo wrestlers large stature is a sign of great accomplishment and physical discipline,. I would consider it HIGHLY offensive (but not sexist) to dismiss sumo wrestlers as just being fat dudes. That’s basically cultural ignorance.

What do you expect from a sideline reporter?
The idea of a sideline reporter and they questions they ask are lame. Haarlow does nothing different than other sideline reports, but she is criticized for what she does because she is hot. Haarlow is a younger, more attractive Ann Schatz, and this thread turned her into a sex object.

Thank you for these responses, dissenting arguments and agreed sentiments.
First of all I would like to state that my use of “jesus christ” to convey my frustration was clearly uncalled for and hypocritical in that it is equally as offensive to some posters/readers as sexism is to me. I apologize.
Secondly, I would like to clarify that my rant was to note my issues with the moderation. An entire thread was deleted because it had disparaging comments about strippers and was in general innapropriate because it didn’t adhere to Dave’s rule requiring this site to remain suitable reading for every member of the family.
Several comments in this thread mock Rebecca Haarlow and subject her and her achievements to unfair derision based soley upon her sex.
As proof, check out the fair thee well thread to Tony Lufton. 200 comments cracking jokes about his horrid broadcasting skills, not ONE mentioning his outward appearance, good or bad.
Sideline reporters in general play a very limited role and in recent history “attractive” women are becoming prominent fixtures. The fact that they are sometimes there because they have a pretty face is demeaning to women and is sexist in and of itself, however, reducing Rebecca Haarlow to nothing more than a piece of meat is offensive and does not facilitate rational, calm and family-oriented discourse that Dave calls for on this site.
Thank you.

Nice proof.
I bet all the comments were made by men. Of course men are going to talk about women that way and not about men. We expect women to talk about us the same way to balance it out. You’re not doing your part!
I don’t tend to notice men’s looks much. But I am unable to avoid fixating on women’s looks. That doesn’t make me sexist—it makes me sexual.
The analogy I like to use is a toaster. Imagine you have a toaster. Toasters are great because you love toast. In my analogy, people are toasters.
But woman are toasters who are also time machines. They make toast just as well as men, but who cares? They are time machines! If something is both a toaster and a time machine, you’re not going to think of it first as a toaster.
That’s why I think of women first as potential sex partners and second as ordinary people. Not because they are any less of people, not at all. Just because the other part is way more important.
Keep in mind that everything I know about basketball I learned on Blazers Edge.

being physically attracted to the opposite or same sex is not sexist.

90% of the posters are males
Also, Tony is too normal looking. Only hot/ugly people get made fun of for their looks. I will use Fabio again. If Fabio were our halftime reporter, and he got canned, TONS of comments would be made about his looks. Luftman is just too normal for this to happen.

May I say
I dated a very smart lady in the rocket science biz[not kiding] who for a couple of years had been a TV weather"person"in Denver. She freely admited that she didnt know squat about meteorology and the only reason that she got the job was her looks
by southern oregon on Jul 15, 2009 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Huh
Nobody discredits her because of her looks, they discredit her because of the stuff she says. The comments about looks are because looks are a really easy thing to make comments about. I don’t see how this is hard to understand.
PS: If people read these comments and are so offended they never come again… then I don’t think they will be missed.
