PrintSo the last Junk Drawer has inspired me to take on the great Debate, I have found that Some people live for the Sword and the Sea While others live for the throwing Star and Hiding in the Shadows, personally I'm a little of Both I like the Sword but don't care much for the sea I'm big on Japan but don't feel the need to hide which is why the Samurai with their discipline and Honor will always win. So of the 3 which Genre do you choose and which is your favorite (Pirate, Ninja, or Samurai) Movie?

yeh, it's like 22.4 miles or something.
I clocked it on sunday afternoon and it only took me 30 minutes, but I was going 60 for most of the way…a couple spots it slowed to 40 for traffic, but it was mostly clear.
I have a feeling it’s suicide if you’re traveling at 8am

My knowledge is out of date...
since I haven’t lived and worked there in a decade or so.
I think the return commute starts somewhere in the 4pm hour, and I think you’ll still have slowdowns in the morning after 9am, but it’ll clear out during that hour.
There’s got to be someone around who’s more practiced than I though.
Monday-Thursday, I’d say that 6-9 and 4-7 are the times of real congestion. Friday, all bets are off.

I have always endeavored to find a suitable domicile close to my bricks and mortar home site, when possible.
I did a two year stint commuting from Oxnard to Santa Monica (53 miles each way). PCH drive is cool once out of traffic, and if on a motorcycle even better, but 53 miles to live in Ventura County? I eventually moved to Santa Monica….so yeah never again. I live and work in Gresham. when I worked in Hillsboro I lived there too…on and on. Commutes are a huge chuck out of one’s life.

At the AAA Home Run Derby at PGE Park tonight, they introduced Canzano and a good portion of the crowd (including me) started booing him, well overwhelming the cheers.

The funny part is that Canzano’s first thought afterward was probably “Woo hoo! They know who I am!”
He looked around shocked that we would boo him

The other cool thing was one of the HS kids (2 got to participate) banked a shot off the front of the MAC balcony, which is sick.

Portland Beavers outfielder Chad Huffman hit five home runs in the final round to defeat Scranton/Wilkes-Barre outfielder Shelley Duncan, who hit one home run in the final round.
But it was recent Sunset High School graduate Kevin Taylor who had the most impressive round of the night. He hit eight out in the first round with virtually each one traveling farther than the previous one. Taylor finished third, bowing out with zero home runs in the second round.
Taylor had three line-drive outs before hitting another home run to right field that measured 398 feet. His fifth hit the top of the scoreboard in right field, covering 406 feet. His sixth went over the right field scoreboard. His seventh went off the Multnomah Athletic Club beyond the scoreboard. And his eighth hit the balcony of the MAC club, drawing a standing ovation.

So bout an hour ago I met a Portland Trail Blazer
at a bowling alley I will leave un-named. I decided to stay after my Monday night league to practice and guess who walked in. Showed him my tattoo and asked for a picture and he was more than happy to give it too me. He just got a brand new tattoo that looks pretty cool. Couldn’t exactly make out what it said though. Someone will say “pics or it didn’t happen” so here!
Btw I bowled 8 games and pretty much killed! 194, 202, 204,206, 223, 230, 231, 250 (Not in that order)

Cunningham – impressed, reminded me of Mbah a Moute on the D end and had a nice 15-18 foot J.
Pendergraph – less impressed, really bad post D. Channing-esque at times.
Bayless – Great except for the turnovers. Showing that he can pass and can score, just needs to figure out when to do each. Flynn, Westbrook, etc. had just as many turnovers, so I’m somewhat pleased.

Didn’t like how he only tool appears to be the 18 foot J.
Pendy was Frye-like on D, Dante was Frye-like on O.
if he’s a really good defender, Mbah a Moute-esque, then I’d be okay with him being just a decent jumpshooter. Heck, Mbah a Moute doesn’t even have that.

I’ve still got mixed feelings on Cunningham, but if he can combine a mid-range game that’s efficient — such as that of Antonio McDyess — with Luc Richard Mbah a Moute esque defense, then he ought to be a decent 12th man.
Still, I wouldn’t’ve picked Cunningham at #33.

As long as he’s a willing student, he could make leaps over the next few years.

I don't have a problem with Cunningham on the roster, even though I disliked the pick
but that doesn’t change the point that he’s probably not a rotation player.
the Blazers already have a lot of talent in their top ten. No one, with the exception of Blair, would be a rotation player at 33.

provided he can hit that mid range J. He already looks like a better defender (though that’s really not saying much…)

yeh, hard to tell too just balling in summer league. You can see things like court awareness and how he moves, but it's hard to judge quickness and footspeed when he's up against noobs.
Really gotta’ just throw him up against real players to find that out.

So, what's the prevailing opinion on Oden's absence from Summer League?
Is this a bothersome thing? A good thing? Somewhere in between? Is it a sign of a lack of commitment by Oden?
I only ask because of the not-so-subtle shot taken at him tonight about not being at Summer League. Curious if that’s the general viewpoint… it felt like most people thought his offseason break and Ohio training was probably for the best, and Summer League wouldn’t offer much for someone in his role.

but bigs like Robin Lopez and Blake Griffin looked pretty darn good today. I’m not going to question the team’s judgement on how to best use the summer league. It seems to me having Oden and Bayless work together in game action would be a good thing, but I don’t know enough about player development to say whether Vegas is better than working on his own with Bayno.

That conditioning and skill-work with Bayno is better for Oden than summer league, but running a team in game-time situations is better for Bayless.

There’s not a lot he’s going to do in SL that’s going to help him grow that he couldn’t already get working out by himself. There isn’t going to be insane coaching tips he’s going to pick up; there’s no big centers he could get practice with; we don’t have a super point guard who’s magically going to teach him the pick and roll……so I’m guessing we just would rather have him working with Bayno.

I don't think there are really any positives for him to play summer league
Aside from hopefully being in better shape.
It’d be nice to see Bayless and Oden play together, but summer league isn’t good for raw bigs. I’m totally fine with him not being there in Vegas.

I think he has been treated somewhat more harshly, particularly when compared to McGwire, for 3 reasons
1) he broke Aaron’s record, which a lot of people care deeply about
2) he’s a douchebag
3) he’s black
I think #3 is a pretty small part of it in this instance, and is only relevant for a small portion of the population.
I think that, in 20 years or so, the best player of the steroids era— Bonds, Clemens, A-Rod, McGwire, Manny, etc. will be in the HOF and deservedly so… but its going to take that long for people to get to that point.
I don’t think an asterisk is necessary for any of their records because people have already put the asterisk there in their minds.
Bonds was at a game in SF vs. the Dodgers earlier this year and they showed him on the jumbotron

He was just as much of a selfish prima donna as Bonds, he just knew how to play the media (and the Cubs reporters were easy to lather up). Sosa left his last game as a Cub early, so most of the fans hate him for that, not to mention the embarrassing corked bat incident.
His teammates hated him so much when he left they all urinated in his locker and destroyed his stereo system in the clubhouse.

I just think Bonds has been unfairly singled out. Clemens isn’t the nicest guy either, but he’s faded into the shadows.

Bonds from 2001-2004 was the greatest offensive weapon the game has ever seen
In 2004, at age 39, Bonds had an OPS 1.422 and an OPS+ (which is OPS adjusted for home park and normalized so the league average is 100) of 263.
Even before steroids, he was consistently OPS-ing over 1.000, while stealing bases and playing good to great defense.
He belongs in the Hall.

I don’t think that’s quite fair. Travis is an athlete who learned to play basketball… Durant is a natural, plays the game with uncanny grace.
However, he has some glaring flaws. Inability to defend a position and almost nonexistent playmaking ability hold him back from being great.

20 years old. 23 ppg 48%fg 42%3pt 87%ft 7 free throw attempts per game. Not a whole lot not to like there. The facilitating part of his game will come with maturity and by developing his bbiq. Kid doesnt even turn 21 til the start of training camp next season. Just a baby…

But, at the same age and under similar circumstances, other wings who have been good to great in our lifetime have been better playmakers just by having the ball in their hands. Durant controls the ball that much, but doesn’t create for others.
THAT, to me, is what will doom his chances of being truly GREAT, more than defense will. But I also believe defense is, for the most part, an experienced man’s game and Durant will eventually get past being a guy other team’s target.
But if your main scorer, the primary perimeter ballhandler, can’t get more assists than turnovers and others don’t benefit from his amazing scoring, then the scoring doesn’t mean as much.
His playmaking should improve, along with the rest of his game. It’d be scary if he even becomes an even better shooter. But his playmaking is starting at a sub-bad level, which usually isn’t the case for wings like him. I mean, he has a long ways to go to be as good as VC and McGrady as playmakers, and to be as effective as them in their prime at helping his teammates— which is something all the great wings do.
And while VC and T-Mac were/are good players, no one is getting ready to anoint them as all-time greats, like we’ve been wanting to do for Durant.

that’s insane and buts him in a very elite group of players, filled almost exclusively with HOF-ers.
If he learns to be even an average defender, he’s going to be incredible.
He’s not there yet, as those numbers show, but I’m afraid I think he can get there. However, Durant’s defensive prowess (or lack thereof) definitely needs to be followed closely as it may continue to reveal shortcomings even as praise starts to get showered his way. We’ll see.

if Durant never improves on O and becomes an average defender, you have Danny Granger, I agree
if Durant becomes an average defender, and improves on O (either by learning to make plays, or by becoming an even more efficient scorer— which would be very difficult to do), he’ll be a superstar.

As a big man who was already raw and missed a year, Oden has certainly accessed less of his potential than Durant has been able to access his, but that was always gonna be the case at this stage even if Oden was totally healthy.
I think Durant will be very, very good, but not a guy who helps you win as much as Brandon Roy does. With Roy’s development into a superstar-level talent, and our offense already being very effective, Durant wouldn’t have really give us what we need as much as a big man does. However, Oden hasn’t proven himself to be the “right” pick through his own play, just other events and players developing since that draft.
I do think Oden will clearly be the right choice, and everyone will agree, over time.

There’s a few other exceptions, now that wrestling is recruiting amateur wrestlers more than they used to.
Legend has it that Kurt and Brock had a private amateur match to decide who was best (before a tv taping, with the wrestlers watching) and Kurt won.

Maybe Kurt had MMA training too, not sure, but Lesnar has come a long way from his strictly wrestling days, although it’s still a huge part of his game.

He shoots good from mid-range, and has better inside scoring than Devin Harris where he is highly efficient (.536 eFG%). PER above 20, TS% above .500 despite his outside shot. At age 22 and in season 2, he was better than Harris at age 22 and in season 2, especially regarding passing which also differentiates him from Conley. 10% better assist rate than e.g. Blake. Though I would rather compare him to a young Andre Miller than a young Devin Harris. Very methodical breaking down defenses, best pick and roll point guard in the league after Chris Paul. Gets to the line at the same rate as Bayless. He is a good (not stellar) defender keeping his opponents to below-average PER of 14 using his legs instead of his hands, has size of Blake and Sergio and more strength. He only has problems with his coach yanking his minutes around and throwing him in there with all kinds of changing lineups. Good rebounder for a point guard. Doesn’t turn the ball over more than Steve despite being much more aggressive penetrating the lanes.
The only knock on him is his outside shooting, and that is fixable. He shot close to 40% in college in his last year and over 40% in the few games in his first year and in the DL, all on limited attempts since he knows his outside shot needs work (unlike e.g. Sergio who just continued to take it). Don’t know why it plunged this year, but at least he stopped taking them.
I think he has incredible value at MLE level. At worst you have just bought one of the best backups in the league, at best you have a top 3-5 future point guard battling it out with Bayless. The chance that none of them becomes starter quality for the long term seems very slim to me.

If the Bucks retain him, I look forward to seeing him and Jennings. Sessions is incredible at changing speed, Jennings only knows go-go-go so far. True, he plays not all his time against starters, but I don’t get the knock on him that he can’t also learn to be a very good defender. Harris, Rondo, Paul, … all allow more efficient scoring against them than Sessions. Of course they also have 5 to 10 PER points more offensive production.
I’m not saying he will be the best after Paul, but why not take a gamble on a player who COULD be top 5. I like Bayless a lot, but in terms of how to run an team, when to shoot, when to pass, Sessions is at least a year ahead.

who never covered her mouth nor turned her head when coughing. I dreaded if she sat down at my table at lunchtime. I actually started eating my lunch in my car a lot. But another coworker just told her straight out that it was rude and she conformed somewhat. Thing is she coughed every day, all the time, and she’s fairly young. I think she went to see a psychiatrist.

Kurosawa actually won a lawsuit because he wasn’t given credit when they took the story.
Magnificent Seven was good, but it just wasn’t on the same level as the original.
Rashomon and The Hidden Fortress were also Americanized in some way. Not that Kurosawa didn’t get ideas from others, but the stories in his movies tend to make for good cinema.

Anyways, yes, he is 100% better than what we currently got as a backup PF, but he isn’t the best of what we can get with cap space. I would like to have a guy like him normally, but I don’t want to waste the chance to either sign a good player like Millsap or remove our chances of doing a lopsided trade just to sign Bass.
He isn’t worth precluding us from pursuing other avenues to improve the team, is all.

Bass smells funny
I’d be happy to get him, but more happy if we were using the MLE to get him, and not actual cap space.
I think using the rare cap space on him would be disappointing.
I love his scoring game
but his rebounding is a bit overhyped
I would be much happier with Milsap or Lee, but Bass was an absolute steal and I imagine the timing counts for a lot of that, given they had money tied up in Gortat.

If we don’t get Millsap, he plays a position we could use, but either way I hope May can pull it together.

It would be a bit of a downgrade to go from Millsap via not bidding for Bass to May. But whatever, I would take him any day over Ruffin just hoping his knees hold and he can put his natural skills to use.

But the absence of an out n’ out BAD move is good as well, since that happens a lot to teams in our situation.
I like our core enough that I don’t think we’re overvaluing them like the Bulls did. They were co-stars with co-star potential, while we got one co-star who is a Big Man (LMA) and a superstar (Roy, I think his name is) and a guy who can be a star in Oden. Ya can’t overvalue them the same way Deng and Friends got overvalued, since they’re on another level (this isn’t something you said, just in response to the normal Bulls/Blazers comparison).
Going into the season with cap space to still make a move isn’t the worst thing, though it will certainly be pretty damn annoying.
I think Hedo woulda’ helped us, but I doubt we’re gonna lose much sleep as a fanbase over losing him. And if another team won’t cooperate with a lopsided trade just yet, having the continual option to take advantage of another team isn’t the worst thing.
Man, it’ll be annoying till then, and if we start off slow, ooooh boy.

I could see people thinking Batum is overvalued
Martell doesn’t likely have a ton of value right now because of the foot, but Batum and his value is just a question of how sure they feel that he’ll be a really good player. I am fine with them hanging onto him except for a gangbusters trade, if they are that confident in him.
Yeah, Blake seems sorta like a security blanket, because they know it WORKS, and don’t wanna gamble for a more unknown/young PG to play next to our other youngin’s. On one hand, a solid consistent vet at PG serves us well, but we won’t be great with him as our starter most likely— though Oden developing will make Blake seem less porous on defense.
Even if we’re truly overvaluing guys like Batum or Rudy, it’d still be “selling low” to trade them right now after their rookie year. They’re only going to improve and be more valuable. Same for Bayless— trading him now wouldn’t get us as much as next season, unless he’s a total bust.
And if we ain’t planning on totally winning the title this year, it doesn’t hurt to keep holding onto our non-core core youngins, and let them simmer a bit and keep improving. Either they show we only need them, or they become more valuable in a deal while on their rookie deals for a few more years.

Even if Martell doesn’t completely pan out he will still be more valuable when healthy in a year. I also ranked Nic the highest in Dave’s value post followed by Rudy since he is incredibly cheap no matter how long he plays at the moment, but it’s difficult to know with wing players who will truly become good.

Luol was offered up to Minnesota before the 2006 Draft, McHale turned down their offer for KG. And depending how much you really want to believe that Kobe was going to be traded to Chicago, Bryant explicitly said he would invoke his no-trade clause if Deng was not on the team.

The raw stats don’t matter, but whether he is controlling the flow of his team, knowing when to make passes, and hitting open jumpers… those things can translate to real games..

Probably not fair to say whether he’s a bad guy in real life or not. We really haven’t seen much of him away from the court. By default (based on KP’s drafting reputation), he’s probably a great guy in real life, but I really can’t say.
Every pro or anti group thinks the other is more volitile and fanatical.
It’s like mini versions of democrats vs republicans.
Both the pro and the anti Bayless crews are a bit over the top. One side already calls him a bust, the other sometimes think he’s a superstar in the making. Sure, that’s the fringe, but it’s the fringe in both directions.
From the outside (I’m rooting for Bayless but don’t really have a horse in this race), the pro-Bayless got crazy about him (led by their fearless leader), and the anti-Bayless crew ramped up the rhetoric to offset it. So both sides get a bit over-the-top.

Not that organized. But I was surprised how harsh some people reacted to his performance yesterday.
It’s not like summer league is so structured that you can really see who will do what in the regular season. Just some hints. I liked that Bayless hit an outside shot for a change (and bricked another one), and had more passes than last year. That he still has work to do is out of the question, but I didn’t expect to see Chris Paul run up and throw passes to Tyson Chandler and David West. Since Bayless, Pendergraph and Cunningham aren’t that.

It’s 1 game in Summer League. Sports fans/commentators/writers/announcers/etc just overreact to EVERYTHING. Seriously, that is like the number 1 flaw in sports anything. EVERYTHING is a huge deal… when in reality most of what happens means very little in the grand scheme of things.

He already made some good moves last season; most importantly Billups for AI, but there is also a little tidbit on how he managed to make J.R. Smith work together with his coach. Trying to further improve, he just attended a nice intensive negotiation course at Harvard Law School (link, you can learn much of that class material cheaper by book and newsletter/journal though, albeit lectures, hands-on training and feedback are of course always good). He credits Bob Whitsitt – yeah, Trader Bob – with teaching him to put yourself in the situation of your negotiation partner to anticipate his arguments and find common ground, something that was reinforced in that course. He also gives some interesting insight into what made Bob’s situation so difficult:
“One thing that’s lost on everybody is what Bob did in Portland — he had a completely different set of marching orders than anybody ever gets. The window on the Clyde [Drexler] and Terry Porter era was closing, and Bob’s mandate was to get back into the championship window without going to the lottery and without becoming a bad team. Detroit, Boston, Chicago — even the Lakers — they all went to the lottery before they became good again. But when Bob was in Portland we went four or five years staying in the playoffs and then we became conference finalists twice in a row. That takes different thinking. You’ve got to get unconventional to do that.”

They offered 7M, Odom didn’t like that. So the Laker’s owner and GM offered "a little north of 8M (about 8.5M) and Odom didn’t like that. So he upped his offer even more from there, and I guess Odom still doesn’t think its enough
Lakers owner Jerry Buss, who improved on his offer of $8 million a season to Odom, is getting frustrated and is thinking about pulling the deal off the table soon.

I actually had 16 in a row that series. I was having hard time getting lined the 1st game of the series ….then finally got it together and and punched out a 5 bagger to finish that 1st game with a 192 and then started with the 1st eleven in the 2nd game (the 298) for 16 in a row. I don't know what the consensus on Odom is, but
if we get him, he’s more able to play backup center than Milsap….so do we move Joel and play a bigman lineup of Aldridge, Oden and Odom? Do we dare trade Joel away?

well i dont see how you could correlate being a good soldier with secretly being unhappy about coming off the bench. i didn’t watch him much this year, but did he ever show any indication he was unhappy? did his body language say he didn’t like coming off the bench?
also what does it mean by not valuing him? in the playoffs he played the 3rd most minutes just behind kobe and pau. the stats even show it. he got his minutes in the playoffs. aren’t the playoffs what really matters? plus he closed the games as well, so i don’t see where the lakers didn’t value him. its not as if they just stashed him away on the bench and didn’t give him much playing time and it’s not as if they deferred to someone else in the playoffs instead of him.

did odom every blatantly say that he felt phil was undervaluing him, besides during spring training in which he initially didn’t like the idea of coming off the bench? besides that i didn’t read any articles of him saying that he didn’t like it.
all these reporters stink. they take one quote and analyze it to find something that shows players are unhappy, then they recycle the information over and over again until everyone just takes it in as fact which is just absurd and kind of disappointing really.
i know that when he was full time demoted to the bench he privately fumed because Vic lobbied for him for his own well being on the air.. and he wasnt happy with the way phil used him.
now if that lasted all year i dont know, but i will say that him not signing a reasonable offer and not even contacting the lakers for an offer speaks more volumes than anything else..

i just have a feeling that odom and his agent are holding out, hoping that if utah matches the milsap offer then the blazers will be forced to look at odom. if they do they could offer him the 5yrs/50 million much like what they offered hedo before the blazers were “boozered”.

yeah but i think bynum and oden are kind of in the same type of situation. i think there’s much of a chance of bynum having a break out season as there is oden. both are pretty much in the same boat, and bynum is only 21. a lot of people seem to forget that.
and yes they weren’t a great team. i would even go as far to say they weren’t the most talented team in the nba this season. they just had a better basketball iq then the others.

that’s because the lakers succeed even while bynum is mediocre. the lakers fans figure anything good bynum does on the court is just a bonus. for the blazers oden’s production is essential for them to continue to develop and get better.

If Olympiacos wants an undersized American shooting guard to replace Lynn Green, the franchise ...
would be better off signing a young, fairly efficient gunner like C.J. watson — whose skill set is perfect for the Euroleague, particularly on a team with a taller playmaker in Theodoros Papaloukas running the point — than a ballhogging chucker with subpar numbers from downtown like Robinson.

Yeah, I guess that makes a difference.
I should also note that my choice as a player who may be suited for the Euroleague, C.J. Watson, fared rather poorly in the Greek League with PAOK Thessaloniki during the 2006-2007 season.
Asidee from Watson, though, guys like Luther Head and Tyronn Lue would be better options than Nate Robinson for Olympiacos. To me, Robinson seems like he’d be an abject failure overseas.

i think that sign and trade works for both teams. i just dropped the idea over at BaB. everyone wins in that trade

i wouldn’t call myself a “fan,” but i do follow them :)
i dont really read simmons pieces. he loves to bash the clippers and write about how horrible they are, and the next thing you know he’s renewing his season tickets for next season.
also the clippers i think are headed in the right direction. they just need to stay healthy, which never seems to happen for them. they’ve made some good moves.
they got camby for virtually nothing. then they got rid of zach randolph’s huge deal for an expiring contract and a trade exception. im still stunned about this deal because i don’t get it on the grizzlies part. i mean, they gave away pau gasol because they said his contract was too long and pricy. then they proceed to trade for zach’s contract which is about the same price as what they would be paying pau. it just makes no sense to me. but anyways, i don’t mind. the clippers bashing gets old. there’s only so many times you can read a joke or snide remark bashing the clippers before it stops being funny.
and if they can somehow trade kaman they would have a lot of cap space to sign someone in 2010. even with all the cap space they’d still have eric gordon and blake griffin under contract..
