Have I mentioned I love Bayless!?
I know it's summer league and all but watching him smash his way to the basket is a thing of beauty. If only real NBA defense was as porous... With all the (upsetting) talk that's been going on this offseason it's finally good to see one of our future stars have his way with some jv competition. Cunningham's looking pretty decent too :)
Obviously it's nothing we can bank on for sure in the future... but DAMN I love basketball! Go Blazers!

well he had a really bad 2nd half

Oden...Aldridge...Roy.....THE REAL BIG THREE
Cunningham was probably more impressive than Bayless.
But Bayless is improving his court vision a bit, which is good.

because Bayless is the man. If only the Milsap thing will go through. Two gym rats with great work ethic on the same team is never a bad thing. Hopefully they will rub off on everyone as well.
i dont think work ethic is an issue with our team
unless we are talking about trouts preseason work out routine.

Bayless
Defense looks ugly. As does his ability to mix passing & distribution. Same problems he had at Arizona. Ugh. Over hyped much?
Patience :)
Are you serious? He has gotten a lot better
at passing but when your teamates dont make shots its hard, and he has restructured his shot and it looks better

Bayless looked awesome in the 1st quarter...
It was practically a flawless performance offensively. That said, his defense is still quite questionable(although I give a pass on that with the lameo refs and the fact his sole concentration is on running the team). 2nd half was ugly. He is improved though, and thats what I was hoping for. All in all I give him a solid B. Still a bit skeptical about him as our 2nd string pg. Injuries happen, and he isn’t ready for big minutes….

If our wings....
…in Las Vegas could make a jumper, JBay’s 7/6 Asst/To ratio would’ve been more like 12/6. That being said, it’s hard to deny his talent for getting to the hole. If his wing players had been making shots, you would’ve seen more of a distributor out there. Let him develop, Chauncy wasn’t Mr. Big Shot over night

Chauncy would make a great adjective, however. Kind of like “chunky”, but in a snooty sort of way.

Chaunce:
chaunce
Definition: The word chaunce is much of an enigma in today’s teenage society, but those who can fully grasp the various meanings and uses of the word will refer to it as such:
1. One who carries himself in a presumptuous manner all the while unknowingly giving off an overall vibe of uncoolness that somehow deters from the well-being of those around
2. One who fails miserably at something after premature boasts of achievement
3. Someone that denies a man what he desires most while not receiving any benefit by doing so; the denial is simply due to a lack of comprehension of the gravity of the ordeal

Umm
Players don’t make 100% of their shots. It’s absurd to say that “player X” should have so many more assists. In the long run, every player will lose the same amount of assists on missed shots.
Sure, in a single game a player can hit 20 open players, only to see them make 7-20. But in another game they might make 18-20. Should we say “Bayless didn’t deserve 18 assists because his players shot too good?”
And yes, Billups was instantly good. His rookie year was awesome, but he got injured in year 2, which stunted his growth for a bit.
EVERYONE QUIT WITH THIS “BILLUPS WAS A SLOW DEVELOPER NONSENSE!”
The Princess of Blazersedge
It took 5 years for him to average over 5.0 assists/game

Billups was a slow developer!
Chauncey played for 5 teams over his first 5 years and averaged roughly 11 ppg, 3.5 apg, and 37% fg%, while being given 30+ minutes per game, over those years. I’d say he’s come along way. His stats, until he got to Detroit, wouldn’t have made many Blazer fans want him here, but everyone would take him now. His shooting % and distribution was definitely no better that Rex’s early on, and he wasn’t as young coming into the league either.
INJURIES
Look at his rookie year. He was on pace to be real good real quick, until he got hurt.
The Princess of Blazersedge
Not really any better than Rex would have been his rookie year
Overall, his rookie year he averaged roughly 11 ppg, under 4 apg, and a 37% fg%. All while being given about 30 minutes per game to succeed. That’s not that great and if Rex had been given 30 mpg he probably would have had better numbers.
Umm
-First off, Billups STILL shoots at a terrible clip, better than 37%, but still awful.
-Second, you can’t just make magical assumptions that Bayless would be good if he got a chance. He didn’t get a chance because he was worse than Sergio. When he did get a chance, he was still worse than Billups.
-Third, 11/4 isn’t bad for a rookie PG. It’s not Rose level play, but it’s better than a ton of the top tier PGs did their rookie season.
Injuries happen, but saying that Billups was slow to develop is just silly. He was slow to develop DUE TO INJURIES.
You wanna use examples for slow to develop? Stick to guys like Nash or Harris who actually were bad when they came into the league.
The Princess of Blazersedge
Wait
you can’t just make magical assumptions that Bayless would be good if he got a chance
How about magical assumptions like this one you made about Billups:
He was on pace to be real good real quick, until he got hurt.
So … was Billups slow to develop or not? Not sure what you meant by this next section:
Injuries happen, but saying that Billups was slow to develop is just silly. He was slow to develop DUE TO INJURIES.
Billups may have developed faster had he not been injured in his rookie season and even had there been more stability to his early career team-wise, but we will never know. It took him years to develop into the player he is today.
Bayless may have developed faster had he been given more opportunities to play. Well, no he is being given the opportunity. Let’s see how it goes before we make judgements.
The primary reason for the Bayless-Billups comparison is likely the quotes from Bayless saying he was trying to model himself after Billups. It’s a compliment to Billups, after all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If Bayless succeeds — good for Portland.
Umm, I made no magical assumption about Billups
Billups produced his rookie year
Billups got hurt
Eventually, Billups got back to game form and produced again
Are you going to argue that if Billups didn’t get hurt he would have never become good? Or that he still would have taken 5 years to become good? I hope not. My statements are based on fact since… last time I check… Billups was a good player.
The Princess of Blazersedge
Nash was not bad at all.
After watching him at Santa Clara I thought he was underrated. He was just stuck behind players like KJ, Cassell, and Kidd.

If the team had some shooters out there he would have had 10 assist easy
His defense was a little spotty though.
Don't forget...
this was there first game there together and the Raptors third.
Better, but....
Bayless is picking his spots to attack and consistently passing to the open man. Obviously he is more comfortable when attacking than creating, but that will change with experience. Bayless consistently passed to an open big for a mid-range jumper or a wing on the perimeter, he then stops, and stares while that player makes his decision. He is only seeing the play that is happening, he needs to be able to see the NEXT play that will happen and get the ball in the right spot.
"Tough times don't last. Tough people do."
-Chauncey Billups
I hope I'm wrong
but I fear Bayless might be the next Marcus Banks. Same body type and same get in your face, but not very effective defense. The Suns tried desperately to turn Banks into a backup point guard but he is really just a shooting guard in a point guard’s body. He never really figured out the passing thing.

He's gonna be good
Show me the rookie / year 2 player that’s playing amazing NBA defense. And please don’t say Batum. Please.
Blazer Fan
Also,
Westbrook, Mbah a Moute, Courtney Lee, Chalmers, Noah, Horford, Afflalo, Balkman. All were decent to great defenders within two years of being in the league, just looking at the past couple drafts.
Al Horford doesn't belong on that list, although that's in part due to him playing out of position.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.
Swap him out for Lopez
or George Hill, then. Although I still stand by Horford as a capable, if unspectacular defender.
Regardless of Al Horford, you're absolutely right about outstanding defenders being ...
skilled at their craft from the get-go. As it concerns Jerryd Bayless, though, there’s no need for me to rehash my opinion of him. Instead, I’ll post a link that includes my thoughts about the overhyped, overrated Bayless.

i'm excited about the potential and everything too
just not about summer league, last year he was the MVP, but even if he dishes out 10 plus assists I’m not really going to get excited until it translates to regular season games, not trying to be a grumpy guss, i just got so excited about off/preseason stuff last year then we had bayless fighting for a spot with sergio, martell went down, oden went down. I feel it’s better not to get too amped up over one player, or too down if they don’t perform well in SL. Look at batum last year doing nothing in SL and then natural assuming a starting role on the team. You never know who will go down or be replaced, just saying.

I'd rather see him score
I’m in the minority here, but I don’t care if his passing improves much this year. He is a scorer, pure and simple. Trying to make him into something he isn’t doesn’t maximize his skllset. The only issue keeping Bayless off the floor last year was his jumpshot, which still didn’t look too fabulous. Consistently sticking the open jumper is the only thing between him and his dreams, not some passing skill or court vision that he will eventually develop, if he can just get minutes.
If he gets an outside shot he might be dangerous
He had some sucess early in the year, but his numbers dropped off because teams learned they didn;t have to worry about his outside shot.
I’d say that scoring wasn’t the only issue with Bayless — he did not look at himself as the 4th option on the team. He should be below Roy,Aldridge and Oden. If he scores it should be because the defense is keying on those three guys.
I think we should trade him now while he still has value — I hate to say it but I think he’s going to fizzle out.
trade Bayless now... agreed
Bayless is not going to be converted into a point guard, it’s just not his game. He has no outside shot, lacks the court vision and awareness to find open teammates and has one penchant— attack the rim. He might get away with that tunnel-vision style in scrummer league occasionally, but last year he got the ball stuffed down his throat time and time again in the real league. When he did pull up for a jumper, the refs had to inspect the rims during breaks for fear his bricks were damaging the cylinders.
Trade Bayless now, before the rest of the league figures out he is just another one dimensional player coaches think they have to mold into something they are not in order to try to salvage something out of what was obviously an over-rated and under-scouted prospect.
I believe that folks that are starving for a trade have Adult Friend Finder accounts and are in relationships It just makes sense. -- TiHa

Bayless will be 21 on August 20.
Give him some time to grow up and learn the NBA game.
Has he not changed his jump shot? Last year it seemed to me that he had a shot put like motion on his shot. Now it looks more like the ball is up, above his head for his shot. That will be easier to get off and less blockable. Now he needs to get comfortable with it.
Give him time.

man Bayless isn't doing too well.
The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.
Kings fan
I'm terrified that he's going to be our backup PG
Bayless is so over rated. What has he done? He’s not a point guard. He can get to the rim but that’s about all I’ve seen from him. He loves to turn the ball over. He can’t play defense. He can’t communicate. He has no court vision. He’s a tiny shooting guard. We need to trade him for his “potential” card before other teams figure out how underwhelming of a player he’ll actually end up being.
Hopefully we get Hinrich and he can remain the third string and we’ll get rid of him before the trade deadline.
There, I said it.
Life is hilarious.

Hard for me to understand the Bayless hate on this board
He has a ways to go to be an NBA starter. He’s 20. He showed last year, in the few games in which he got extended minutes, that he can score at this level. He works real hard. He says the right things. Brandon says he’s excited about his potential.
So it’s hard to understand the level of anti-Bayless comments on this board. The tone of the comments about him is so snarky…people seem so put off by him that they seem to be rooting for him to fail.
Why the negativity? Is it that he comes off as arrogant? Obsessive? If so, he’s just a kid. If an NBA player has to have a personality flaw, those are pretty good ones to have, right? Better a kid who wants it too much than a kid who doesn’t want it enough.
by Hawthorne Wingo on Jul 16, 2009 12:29 PM PDT reply actions 1 recs
Again, nobody wants him to fail
We just can’t see throwing the future of the organization into the hands of someone who could very well fail.
The Princess of Blazersedge
Really?
Read the comments above, and in the other threads about JB. The comments are far more negative in tone than comments about any other player. “He loves to turn the ball over”, They have to fix the rims when he shoots, etc. I’m curious why that is. He was our rookie 11th man last year. At most, he’s the 4th guy off the bench this year. What is it about him that inspires such passionate negativity?
If your concern is really just that you “can’t see throwing the future of the organization” to JB at this point, I agree. I think everyone else from Paul Allen on down agrees, too. I haven’t seen any serious discussion of putting him in the starting lineup, for example.
He’s really young. He’s trying hard. Even the haters have to concede that his speed, strength and leaping ability are very good. Sometimes young guys get better over time. Travis Outlaw was pretty bad as a rookie. So was Jermaine O’Neal. Sometimes they don’t. But since we have the luxury of not having to play JB 40 minutes a night, we can give him some time to develop before we give up on him, can’t we? Why am I wrong about this?
By the way, I don’t think he’s ready to play backup point. Unless you think Rudy is, then we’ve got to get another guy. I think that’s what Nate meant by his comments after Sergio was traded. So I’m not counting on anything from Bayless this year. But I do expect him to generate more sarcastic comments about his arms, face, demeanor and clothes that the rest of the team combined.
by Hawthorne Wingo on Jul 16, 2009 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
You must have never seen a thread about Sergio or Travis
if you think the comments about Bayless are overly negative.
The comments are negative
But none of those comments say “I hope he is a failure of a player.” Every one of those comments say, “He is failing as a player right now.” This is just stating the truth very bluntly.
If you find quotes that say, “I HOPE Bayless continues to turn the ball over and miss shots.” Then I will consider the idea that people want Bayless to fail.
