Canzano swings and misses on Blazers fans, shows he really doesn't get us
Canzano's latest column is another loser, talking about how we should all evaluate the Blazers on a year by year basis like they are a business. Well I don't know about you but I've been a Blazers fan from birth and I'll be one until I die. While its more fun to do so when they are winning, I didn't stop cheering when they were losing.
Read more of this article below and at this link (http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/index.ssf/2009/07/how_about_a_oneyear_deal_for_b.html#preview)
Canzano writes:
The Blazers were wonderful on the court last season. And the front office has had a couple of promising years. Things have been improved, and you've rewarded the organization. But then they raised ticket prices and turned stingy with the franchise superstar. Maybe this offseason is just trying to tell you to tread lightly.
I'm certain the Blazers would love to lock you up for a lifetime contract today. They'd love to count on your dollars and sweat forever. And maybe some of you have already decided you're all in. But I heard from a lot of people this week who might feel more comfortable putting the organization on a series of one-year rolling contracts, and I can't say I blame them.
Well, what John is describing is bandwagon fans, not real fans. See, I keep the Blazers accountable, as do all of us here but I don't do it because I won't be a fan of them if they don't do what I want . Instead, I keep them accountable BECAUSE I love them, because they are my team, my first sports love. No matter how much I may root for other teams, in other sports, I realize, especially when they lose because of how badly it hurts, that I am more of a Blazers fan, far more, than I could ever be of any other team. Although I might put on yellow and green for the Ducks, or green and black for the Vikings, or any other colors, at my heart I bleed scarlet and black.
I guess, in the end, Canzano doesn't even really get Blazers fans. I could be wrong but I don't think so? Is your love of this team a series of "One Year Contracts"? Why or why not? I welcome your thoughts.

I love all the comments
Which basically boil down to “You’re dead wrong John, period.”

Must we bash Canzano whenever we're not in 100% agreement with him?
He contributes to the Blazers dialogue in this town and his job requires that he pump out a lot of it. He gets things wrong just like everyone else here – including Dave and Ben. Those two only get a break because they have the power to ban you.
I heard plenty of callers to 95.5 the other day talking about walking away from the Blazers if they didn’t sign Roy. From the quotes posted above, it sounds like he was simply reflecting the feelings of his callers. Most folks here don’t feel that way, but maybe, just maybe, he wasn’t talking about YOU.
Give him a break.

Not on this one
And we’re not walking away from Roy either.
Some columns are so bad they deserve to be mocked. This is one.

The Canzano Sells His Soul fanpost
has 22 Rec’s already. How much mockery is enough?

As much as Canzano decides is enough
If he stops publishing stupid things, I’ll stop making fun of him.

Canzano is one of the faces of Blazer fandom for the rest of the league.
If he spouts out stuff that misrepresents us (like this piece) then I think mocking is how we let everyone else know that he doesn’t speak for us.
Maybe thats a little harsh, but its not pointless.

Wow!
You just insulted any and all true blazer fans. He does NOT reflect “the feelings of his callers” because he either does not know, or does not CARE how we truly feel. He just wants to stir the pot for his own benifit, he just wants the attention in hopes that he will be recognized. He DOES NOT give a flying crap about THIS TEAM, THIS CITY, or US FANS! He is a sefish hack, a joke, a sham! If you have a brain in your head, or a heart in your chest you would not ever defend him. You would accept him for what he is…an unfortunate by product of a passionate fan base that is stuck with sub par journalists because we are just not a big enough draw to procure ourselves any real talent. It’s too bad because we truly deserve better, but hey, we’re at least (most of us) smart enough to call it like we see it.

Canzano sucks
"Both Anthony Carter and Jameer Nelson were downright jubilant in the Magic locker room postgame. Carter said to no one in particular, "Brandon Roy, that man is unstoppable, it's like he's playing NBA Live" and Nelson was cracking on his teammates for not being able to guard Brandon. The kinds of jokes you can make when you win."

Clownzano doesn't get it...
He seems to be much more about sensationalizing than reporting. His comments are inflamatory either by design or through ignorance. This tact by him certainly doesn’t help the Blazers and as a matter of fact his negative spin can actually hurt the team. I too am a Blazer fan for life. There will be no one year contracts from me. It’s a Max Deal… just like Roy will get.

Telling Fans How To Be Fans
What a moron. Do Dodger fans go year to year? Yankee Fans? Red Sox Fans?
They are OUR team thru thick and thin. You can rag about the team, criticize management or anything else your heart desires.
Of course a bay area transplant (who likes to say he was born in Oregon, big deal) who
fell in love with the city of Portland. Great……Get in line. We have a history and you are a guest here.

heyyy
Don’t hate on the bay area. we are real fans too. How often are the WARRIORS good? And we STILL go to the games, cheer louder and more passionately than MOST fans in the league and support our idiotic front office. The 49ers have sucked for sometime, as have the raiders. Don’t rag the Bay area, cuzz we don’t want to claim Clownie either. I’d rather have Bozo than canzano.

That guy is an idiot. He writes like the Blazers are the most important thing ever, and that our lives depend on whether Roy gets his contract next week or next month.
Pretty much the only thing I like about his writing is the fact that it’s about the Blazers.

The most important question.....
Is how did he make himself part of the story?
by tmundal on Jul 11, 2009 10:55 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I think we should actually give him credit
In the two paragraphs quoted he’s cut down to only three I’s/I’ms.
That has to be a record for JC.

How about a real sports columnist for Blazers fans?
It’s a wondrous thing, writing curt paragraphs no longer than two or three sentences. Because, before Canzano, you wonder if such phoniness was possible. Commonly followed by a pathetic, one-line attempt at profundity.
Two lines if especially preachful.
Remembering to add a verb is not required for poignancy. Crazy, isn’t it?
To inform you, today, that John Canzano is actually paid to do this. Because when he’s not complaining about the Blazers, he composes the most saccharine human interest stories imaginable. Dripping with syrup, not only do his subjects deserve more, so does every reader that happens across The Oregonian sports section.
One year of honest writing may be too much too ask.
One year of genuine observations.
One year of not trying to stir the pot, create baseless controversy or contribute to the general butchering of the English language. Should we lose him someday, no worries. I truly believe there is is word processing software programmed with the Canzano paragraph structure allowing for a hint of folksy not to mention boundless indignation.
We understand this is just one writer, a hack no less, working for a paycheck.
We’re the readers, see.
I pray.

If we didn't have Canzano, we'd have to invent him
What a perfect jerk columnist. Self-aggrandizing, thin-skinned, with a shrill yip-dog voice. Revealingly, he always refers to Portland as “your” city, never his own. That’s because he just sees it as a stepping stone. After all, he’s from the Bay Area—a real metropolis. [And no, this isn’t provincial resentment on my part; like lots of Portlanders, I’m from SF and CHOSE to live here.]
Every town must need one of these sports “journalists,” because they all seem to have one. Maybe it’s like the bad-guy wrestler; someone’s gotta play the role. And it’s an easy role to play. You stir the pot in order to get ratings and, hopefully, you get plucked from your podunk stopover in Portland, Sacramento, or wherever and go national.
The ultimate aspiration: becoming the next Stephen A. Smith. Ah, what dizzying heights!

Maybe I'm a huge minority...
…I consider myself a Blazer fan. But I my fandom isn’t stagnate. To me, it cheapens your support if you say, I’ll support this team regardless of what happens!
Oh really? So you don’t care what happens? How bad it could get? Your support is unmoving and stagnate? Well in my opinon anything healthy is growing and changing constantly. That means we need to evaluate it constantly. The contention that we fans need to evaluate on a year to year basis is perfectly fine. Infact, I evaluate every move this team makes constantly, immediately.
I’ve never understood the contention that questioning is being a “bad” fan. While blind devotion regardless of the reality of the product is being a “good” fan.
