Alternative trade scenario for Milsap

Yesterday, I posted a possible explanation for KP's signing Milsap - A multiple player  trade for an elite guard after December 15. An alternative explanation, also based on KP's desire to attain an additional elite guard, focuses on the tremendous financial pressure that Utah must be feeling.

What if KP's goal is Deron Williams. Yes, I know that Utah has on several occasions identified him as untouchable. For a moment, though, just consider the possibilities.

Utah doesn't want to retain Boozer [too expensive, disloyal, likely to leave next year, Milsap a better, cheaper  fit] but for the same reason, no one else wants him. Also, Utah NEEDS financial relief.

Chicago doesn't want Hinrich [overpaid, far less attractive than Rose] and needs a rugged post presence.

Portland doesn't really want Hinrick [too expensive, not a signifcant upgrade to Blake, stymies exploration of Bayless upside]

No other teams, save of OKC [which seems exhausted] can accept Boozer's  $12 M salary or would be willing to take the risk of signing him next year.

So, here's a 3 team possibility. Utah resigns Milsap after we rescind our offer sheet [with Milsap's consent];  Boozer goes to Chicago for Hinrich and perhaps a draft choice from us to bridge the small salary gap issue. We send Travis, Rudy, Bayless, cash and perhpas a draft choice to Utah for Williams. Given Utah's needs, maybe, we could do it with less.

I take it  to be obvious that the deal would benefit both the Bulls and the Blazers. Chicago gets an all star poewer forward for a decent point guard who will be relegated to the bench. We get an all star point guard who fits both our style of play and our coach's fancy leaving us, assuming Nic develops his potential,  with an  all all star starting line up. What about the Jazz?. They would have. a starting five of  Hinrick, Rudy, Milsap, Okur, and Kirilenko with Travis, Bayless, Korver, Harpring and Miles coming off the bench. Not so bad - maybe even improved. And of course that does not take into consideraton the significant cap relief and cash that they would realize.

Ffor the record, we would be left with Williams, Brandon, Nic, LA and Greg starting primarily backup up by Blake, Martel, and Joel. We would also have our rookies [Pendergarph, Cunnigham and Mills, whatever else Utah had to send over to make the deal work, and space for our European holdovers.

Could this be one of  the possibilites that KP has in mind?

We'd have to give up more than that.

We’d at least have to give up Aldridge in a deal for Williams. (Aldridge, Rudy, Bayless, Outlaw, lots and lots of draft picks is more realistic.) The problem is that it would gut our roster.

Maybe it's just me

My position on these theories is all these chess moves (being two or three steps ahead of the game) don’t seem likely. Maybe it’s my limited foresight, but when you’re playing with a few million dollars, I doubt you’re trying to force another team to call your bluff. At most, they might be looking at it as a win-win situation… IF Toronto signs Turkoglu THEN we’re in a better position for the next deal. IF Utah signs Milsap THEN they’ve spent most of their cap.

But the Blazers primary goal must be to get these players on our team.

Also, I’ll say it now for the first time. If Utah signs Milsap and needs to get rid of Boozer, I’d rather take him for a year than deal with Chicago or whoever.

yuck

I can think of a lot of scenarios (moving LMA over to SF for 6 minutes a half to make room for Millsap, etc) but I have no inclination to even consider Boozer taking up residence on the Blazer’s roster for any amount of time.

Not even for a nanosecond as part of a three-way trade

this could NEVER happen

we have a better chance of trading greg oden straight up for lebron than this..We need to be realisic here Deron Williams is the 2nd best point guard in the nba. He doesnt get traded forTravis Rudy and Bayless period maybe lamarcus with that but he is the brandon roy of that franchise no way they woould trad ehim for some scrubs

Maybe for Williams and NY's 2010 first round pick

If you want to trade our spare parts for Devin Harris, I have three quarters I would like to trade for your dollar

There should be a new rule enforced on trade proposals:

If the blazers are getting the other teams best player, and not including LMA/Roy/Oden, it will never happen. Don’t even bother posting it…

Depends on the team...

I’m sure we could get the best player on the Knicks without trading any of them.

Tony Bennett reports that Minnesota and Portland are swapping draft picks -- Roy to Portland, Foye to Minnesota. That's it? That's the trade? None of the ESPN guys seem remotely fazed. I knew Kevin McHale couldn't just pick the best guy in the draft without somehow screwing it up. I would have bet my Ndudi Ebi rookie cards on it.

Seriously Though.

If we got Williams I could estimate conservatively that we’d win 3 titles in the next 5 years.

I don’t like post. I’m going to be thinking about the possibilities of the Blazers + D. Will. for days, and there’s no chance this will happen!

Derons Williams is

one of the few players I’d give up Aldridge to get. but i cringe at the thought of what we’d have to give up. LA, rudy, bayless, and travis might not even get it done.

.......... you might as well become a Jazz fan at that point, because the roster of the future Jazz would be the roster of the current Blazers.

DWill is a franchise player

He means more to the Jazz ownership and fanbase than his performance on the court. He gives the fans a reason to buy tickets and jerseys and to hope for playoff success. He is there Brandon Roy.

No team will trade a player like that unless (1) he significantly alienates the fanbase and/or (2) they receive an offer for the player far beyond what they are worth (ex: Roy and LMA for CP3). They will be much, much more hesitant to make a deal with a division rival.

There is no value to be had in a trade for a franchise player.

Short of bankruptcy of the Utah franchise, there is no way, no how that Williams is being traded to anybody for anything...

He is the Brandon Roy of the Utah Jazz.

What if KP’s goal is Deron Williams. Yes, I know that Utah has on several occasions identified him as untouchable.

Given Utah's needs, maybe, we could do it with less.

Yeah like not trading Rudy. Everyone else see ya-hello Deron!
