That didn't take long.
They can work up a contract for Millsap but cant agree with Roy? Man BRoy has to be fuming right now. Dang, I’m pretty pissed about it too!

It's fine.
He’s not leaving. Jordan had awful contract talks with the Bulls. In the end if he gets what he wants (which he will) it will be water under the bridge.
I’m a little more worried about Aldridge.

Don't worry man
LMA will get his and it will be at a price that is agreeable to the organization and to our future. In the end that is all this is about.
Our front office and their agents do this as part of their job description. If they didn’t negotiate shrewdly and get as many deal points as possible in a win-win scenario, then they would be ineffective negotiatiors, which they clearly are not.
I don’t believe Lamarcus will get the max but he will be signed long term and it will be for at least $45M, possibly as high as $60M if he gets five years.
I would really prefer a four year deal with team options on the fifth year of each contract. Their agents won’t like it but we do have some leverage here. After all, both players desire security in a down economy and don’t want to take the risk of entering next year without a long-term deal or receiving max contracts under a lesser cap next summer. If we didn’t have this leverage in the first place than there would be nothing to negotiate.

I havent seen any
big name players with team options. I would be surprised to see that in his contract.
Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.
I will talk about DeJuan Blair no more forever
Did he really? Thats a little encouraging I guess.

Even though...
the Bulls did just lose Gordon. JR isn’t exactly the best example of how you should run a team.

We have to sign a FA
Before we up Roy’s pay I assume thanks to cap issues.

Nope
LMA and Roy’s extensions have no bearing on our capspace for this summer. Their signings may, however, lead other teams to believe that we are less willing to put out a big offer after having granted two huge contracts to core players. That may also be part of the waiting game.
Furthermore, the longer the negotiations go on, the better price we should get for either player because they will be that much more anxious to secure their future as each passing day increases their risk of a freak debliltating or tragic and career-ending injury.

The issue with Roy is probably one of two things
Roy has the same agent as Lamarcus but Lamarcus is not getting what he wants so they are both holding out. Plus the Blazers might want to have most of their contracts expire in a fashion they are comfortable with for building the team at a later time 4 not 5 years from now for instance. also a less likely issue could be they are concerned about Roy getting a career ending injury and then being stuck with his contract long term, one year extra doesn’t seem long so probably not the real issue.

That’s what I’m thinking too. I bet those two get signed and announced at the same time – partly because of their agents but also to send a message that they are both critical to this franchise’s future (seems like they’ve tried pretty hard to keep the ‘second fiddle’ tag away from LMA).
I also have a gut feeling that we’ll make any trades/FA signing first to show this team will be really, really good, and then extend Roy and Aldridge to show that we’ll be really, really good for a long time. Not for financial reasons but for the message and to gain some momentum this summer.
why would Roy be mad?
wasn’t he the guy who was saying the team needed to get tougher at the end of the Rocker’s series?
Millsap fits the bill. And his offer is better than Hedo’s
When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
He is mad about his contract

Let's get a good late night thread going!
Who’s with me?
First of all, is there anyone that doesn’t see this as incredibly shrewd and aggressive on our part?
I’m telling you, the best thing that could have ever happened for us this summer was a pair of decisions made by Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur, and maybe even Dorkaglu.
Their decision to opt in put the Jazz in a very vulnerable place financially and then KP/Penn saw that weakness and have decided to put the screws to Utah and exploit the situation to our full advantage.
And you thought the Roy negotiations were shark-infested…meh
The absolute worst-case outcome here is that Utah matches our offer and somehow manages to trade Boozer to a Western Conference contender or division rival for cap relief. Obviously, with as little leverage as Utah has at the moment, that will be very difficult to accomplish. Who even has the cap space on the West Coast? OKC and Sac-town? If OKC is unwilling to pay Millsap what we have offered, why on Earth would they do the same for Boozer? The only snag with that line of thought is that Booz will be a fat expiring contract just in time for the most star-studded FA class in history and thus has some redeeming value.
Either way that is a pretty good worst-case scenario for us…kind of a wash. They keep Millsap, keep or trade Boozer to a relative non-contender, and we get to keep our capspace armed and ready to execute a lopsided trade or go after another FA if we please.
Not bad.
Then there are the other possible outcomes. One is the unthinkable for Jazz fans: they simply let Millsap walk. I think that’s all but impossible but if it goes through I would think that is our best-case scenario, even if we don’t decide to keep him (which I think we should), we get the FA BPA and a valuable trading chip in years to come (especially after his bonus has been paid).
The other outcome is perhaps the most likely. Utah uses our capspace to move Boozer in a trade to our liking that allows them to match our offer without paying out the ying-yang. In actuality, this might be the best case scenario since we would only agree to do this if we thought that a) Utah wouldn’t match without our help and b) we stand to do better than just Millsap in a trade. Hinrich has been mentioned but I doubt if that is really the move. Would we really use our cap space just to get Kirk Hinrich? Couldn’t we do that some other way that nets us more than just a modest, albeit necessary, upgrade at PG?
I think the odds are that KP is cooking up something real good in his kitchen but that we don’t end up with Millsap. Utah at this point will do anything to keep him and avoid paying more luxury tax. That gives us the leverage we need to get them to give up some real nice pieces so that we can get something that addresses both of our needs at PG and PF, like Prince/Maxiell or Hinrich/Thomas or even Hinrich/Deng.
I believe our leverage is that much in this situation and that if we truly want Millsap, unless the Jazz can find a way to ditch Boozer without our help (which will afford us a windfall of assets), that HE IS OURS.

Extremely agressive and dirty.... I love it!
It’s really a win-win or break even situation. No way that we really lose. Great idea… I think we can thank Penn for this move!

I'm sure Penn
has been supporting and helping KP throughout all of this terrible drama and adversity he has faced in the last few weeks.
I find it amusing that we as humans will glorify, if not deify, an individual when results are to our liking but then turn around and caustically criticize, if not crucify, said individual when the results are instead frustrating and painful.
KP has gotten too much credit when times are good and too much hate when times are bad. Thanks for mentioning Tom Penn as another member of KP’s staff!
He’s not alone in these decisions people!
