We need to upgrade from Canzano and Quick with a sign and trade
These two clowns are killing me. Quick has been making stuff up all summer and Canzano is starting up his Vulcan crap and tying every piece of news he can to the Brandon Roy contract extension.
Quick picked a fight early last year with Oden and his reports half killed the fan support he had and Canzano is always harping about some rediculous conspiricy theory involving the Vulcans or Paul Allen's finances.
I swear that they would both be happier with the Jail Blazers/Patterson era so they can have some real bad news to report.

OHHHHHHHHH GREAT BLAZER NINJA
You’re wisdom is beyond my years. I wish I could work with someone as wise as you.
I’m sick of hearing about how the Blazers are trying to screw Brandon Roy. They dont call it negotiations because it happens in 10 minutes. If it werent for these idiot reporters, none of us would think this is such a huge deal. Brandon will get his money.

Canzano just interviewed a snowboarder and asked him if he
thinks that the Blazers have screwed up the relationship beyond repair.

Understand.
There’s an ugly current running through this thread.
It’s bigotry.
Bigotry against America’s #1 Sports Columnist.
Bigotry against a highly successful mid-size market sports-radio host.
Can you say, “Jealous much?”
You bet.
And the self-loathing inherent in these pitiful attacks is as obvious as a shiny, beautiful bald head.
Canzano is not a journalist.
He is a columnist. And he brings his opinions hard.
Not everybody likes it. But the man must be respected.
He is, after all, America’s #1 Sports Columnist.

That have earned John Canzano the title of America’s #1 Sports Columnist.

He would often tell me that I was the best radio host AND columnist.
Of course he would then release his Fighting Dog off the Loading Dock and sic it on me using a Trading Card as bait (and ID), see. In that way I gained Traction. Me. I did that.

he brings his opinions hard, huh?
that is the #1 problem with the #1 sports columnist. he’s trying to live up to this facade he has created. like he’s the howard stern of sports radio/writing. when in reality, he is completely tame and average in every aspect of his work and personality.
if he would just simmer down and actually attempt to do his job competently instead of being this wrestlemania action figure sportswriting persona, he’d actually do much better work.
of course, then he’d sacrifice his ratings for truth and accuracy. therein lies the conundrum.
newspapers and sports columnists are a dying breed all over the nation with the advancement of the internet. i honestly can’t even remember the last time i got my news out of an actual newspaper. or from the radio for that matter. they don’t break news anymore because information travels so far and so fast that it is already old news before it hits the page or the airwaves. therefor, these old dinosaurs have to adapt and make their livings being so-called shock jocks and stir the pot in order to keep themselves relevant. they are desperate measures from a desperate breed.
i suggest you keep this in mind when reading your paper or listening to any sort of talk radio. then you’ll just smile and shake your head like i do.
they are all just marionettes here for our amusement.

Off the top of my head
Quick’s whole bit about Travis wishing he could be allowed 20 bad shots a night like ‘mello was supposedly said by Trout tounge in cheek, whereas Quick presented it like he was serious. I think Quick was also one of the major writers ’breaking’ the RUDY IS RAGING ABOUT HEDO story.

They're not that bad
Canzano has a LOT of airtime to fill, and he’s gotta make it interesting enough for people to listen. If you can’t stand him then change the station – and see how much Blazer talk you get somewhere else.
I haven’t forgotten the terrific behind the scenes reporting that Quick gave us all season long, and I respect his opinions.
Yeah! That's exactly right!
Do you think anyone could talk about the Blazers for hours on end day after day and do it in an original, fun, upbeat manner without trying to stir up controversy? Puh-leeze. It’s not like you see Wheels or Antonio putting a show together. BFT is clearly our only option.
"Wheels at Work" is a much better listen
Wheels is actually responsible about his opinions. Obviously, he works for the team and that limits his ability to be critical, but at least he isn’t an attention whore like Clownzano.
Clownzano has this huge platform and could spend his time educating fans about the team and the NBA, but no, he is always about trying to create controversy to drive up his short-term ratings. He does so at the expense of his own long term credibility. Canzano is not a reporter, not a journalist, not even really a columnist. Clownzano is above all an entertainer. Entertainers crave attention.

Yellow hummer, dog fighting, drag racing, metal detectors, Darius miles, Steve Patterson , John Nash, Ruben Patterson, bonzi wells, trading cards, and his favorite catch phrase- jail-blazers. He loves the negative, and to his credit has somehow built a career off of all the worst things that have happened to our team. He is a hack and does not deserve respect as a journalist. The only thing I give him props for is being able to, with very meager writing skills, somehow pull the wool over enough peoples eyes to actually get paid for it.

This is really nothing new...
…I’ve read quite a bit of overheated Blazers coverage over the years. I’m pretty sure Steve Duin (way back during his sportswriting days) had a flair for the overdramatic, and I’m positive Dwight Jaynes could be the same way. For example, I seem to remember that Jaynes, circa ‘92-’95 lamented, as if he was writing a squalid political obituary, that the Drexler-era squad would go down as the Buffalo Bills of the early nineties NBA. They didn’t, and even if they did, who cares? I still loved watching that team and I treasure the memories I have of them. The world kept turning.
I agree things are a bit worse with Canzano, and Quick sometimes gives me the impression that he thinks he’s Bob Woodward. I’ve made this point here before, but I’ve always held the opinion that sportswriting is a shallow occupation, and these guys must realize that. I think that whatever import there is to be derived from sports journalism (and indeed professional sports in the U.S.) has come about almost entirely because of this country’s tortured racial history: the accomplishments of Jack Johnson, Jesse Owens, Joe Louis, Jackie Robinson, and Muhammad Ali (to list the most obvious names that came to mind) were magnified in importance due to the larger civil rights struggle. It was certainly proper to study the careers of these (and countless other) black athletes with seriousness because they were genuinely important political and historical figures.
But beyond that, I couldn’t care less about sports journalism-I read it like I would an entertainment column. If anyone thinks that baseball’s current troubles with PEDs are anything approaching a major scandal in this country at this (or any other) time, they are purely and simply foolish (those gales of laughter you hear are coming from the halls of Goldman Sachs or a thousand other shadowy and dank corners in the republic). Sportswriters often write as if baseball’s troubles (or the various legal problems of NFL players, etc.) are really so terribly important, and Mr. Canzano might be the most conspicuous example of that tendency we’ve yet seen in the Portland press, and I’ve always thought that his ilk realize this, and so they go about making structurally unsound mountains out of various molehills as if to make up for the superficiality of the task at hand. I suspect that the aforementioned Steve Duin, having long since switched to writing about politics (both local and national), human-interest stories, and occasionally touching on art and literature, is much more fulfilled professionally than he was when he had to treat personnel moves or college recruiting like they were acts of badly-needed legislation.

BE did a great piece on JQ after...
Quick skewered GO back in December. It is definately worth a re-read.
http://www.blazersedge.com/2008/12/11/689694/why-quick-matters
As fans, most of us would generally like to hear very positive stories about our favorite team. When someone writes negatively about our favorite team, our initial reaction is to attack.
The biggest problem I see with Quick is that he is predominantly a journalist, but sometimes pens opinion pieces. This can be confusing. Additionally, he is often time the conduit of bogus info from the organization. I am sure he is not thrilled about it, but in this day and age of instant news, Quick has a deadline and needs to print what he hears. Otherwise, he is out of a job and we are filleting some other writer.
My biggest problem w/ JQ was his intention a couple of years ago to leave the Blazer ?Beat at the Oregonian after a particularly bad season. Somehow, the team improved and he stayed. I didn’t follow the details all that closely, but it left a bad taste in my mouth.
Both have a bad track record
Quick makes up for some of his sins by doing really good work sometimes. Canz is completely horrible.

The media is so getting played
By Roy and LMA (who have the same agent). They know they hold all the cards because their fan base will hate them if either is not resigned. They’ll max out.
Proud member of Duck nation!
How much you want to be they don't both max out?
Not gonna happen. And if Roy does get a 5th year it will probably be at our option. The Blazers are moving forward shrewdly with a huge negotiation and I applaud them for it. Most of the people calling for a max amount max duration contract giveaway would drive any business into the ground.

What else does Brandon Roy need to do to merit a max contract?
The man is a legit top 10 player in the NBA. If that does not diserve a 5th year I dont know what does.
The max contracts are starting to die out, but Brandon Roy should be the exception.
I ask you this? what young star would you guys want to max out over Brandon Roy? I could not imagine anyone who should get a long term max deal over Brandon.
* Building a Greg Oden Fanboy Treehouse Clubhouse this summer...
It's a negotiation
If you choose to not negotiate with Roy, it is disrespectful to anybody else the organization plays hardball with. If everyone knows that they are going to have a negotiation, no matter how great they do, the expectation is set in advance.
This is bigger than Roy. Roy and his agent know that and they are trying to play “fans of panic” to their advantage by going public with some frustration. The deal will be signed. People need to understand it won’t be easy though.
I heard him say today that since blazers want a four year deal with roy it meant that that Paul Allen was dying and that the blazers are trying to be flexible for a possible move in 5 years, Canzano is a huge spin doctor
I have said it before and I will say it again. Canzano is a Jim Rome wannabe. Talking rude to callers and talking in short sentences with long pauses doesn’t make you cool. His ego is getting out of control. Sorry John, Jim didn’t make a rise by bashing his small market’s team management, having 80 year old fans on the show (and then bashing them), all while moonlights as the teams beat writer. No self respecting sports figure out of our region would ever consider coming on his show because he has no creditably. He needs to go, I hated listening to the LA sports show host, but at least they didn’t try to piss of the organization everyday.
No one in the world can beat me at RBI baseball 3(nes).
I don't disagree with you entirely
But he just had Keyshawn Johnson on the show and pulls some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment on a regular basis. Christ he even got the President!
You can call him a liar and an egoist and be correct but if you deny that he’s EXTREMELY effective at what he does for the sponsors of his employer then you’re really no better than he is. After all, that would be blatant misrepresentation of the truth.
You have to take Canzano and Quick with a healthy shaker of salt grains. Maybe two or three. They are here to entertain us more than to inform and at least they give us something to talk about, right? I think we should be grateful. How boring would it be to have a “normal” beat writer or columnist to talk about?
Trust me. You like it better this way and if you’re like me you probably feel a little guilty about it. : )

Canzano is a big dumb dummy
My buddies mom was talking to him one time and he admitted to her that he hates watching sports and that if it weren’t his job he wouldn’ t do it at all. He was completely serious. His columns are nothing more than the puff piece human interest garbage they have on the local news. He’s a joke. But he’s also America’s #1 Sports Columnist. So I could be wrong. Quick is legit.
I want Greg Oden to tuck me in at night and tell me stories about the old times
I would bet $100
listeners did not vote for him. This was most likely an award from the industry
"Both Anthony Carter and Jameer Nelson were downright jubilant in the Magic locker room postgame. Carter said to no one in particular, "Brandon Roy, that man is unstoppable, it's like he's playing NBA Live" and Nelson was cracking on his teammates for not being able to guard Brandon. Quick is very solid when he sticks to reporting and doesn’t swerve into spin.

I like Quick
His behind the locker room door series was awesome, and his features have really provided a human side to the players in Blazer black and red. He’s not perfect, but he’s probably better than 95% of beat writers out there.
I can’t read Canzano, though, even when he writes about things I care about (rare). His writing style is somewhere between annoying and nails-on-a-chalkboard, and his opinion pieces are shallow fluff; he never seems to peel back any layers in his pieces, it’s all surface stories with him. And, of course, his personality rubs me wrong, especially after growing up reading Terry Pluto, a sports columnist who actually writes about the teams he follows, has sources, and seems to empathize with fans instead of telling them how they should feel.

Devil's Advocate???
I agree. There is a difference between being the Devil’s Advocate, or even a Contrarian, just for arguments sake, and simply making things up and hoping for negativity. They don’t need to carry water for the Blazers and be complete Homers; heck I like hearing the other side of things. But, by them continuing to harp on the Roy negotiations it just muddies the waters. All they need to report is that there discussions and we’ll let you know when there’s a deal. Even a Pritchard interview with some pointed questions is fine, but they need to at least appear to be neutral.
Quick v the other guy
I think Quick is pretty good. He does irritate me at times but it’s like when me and one of my friends gets into an argument – we move on and I still respect him. And I don’t want someone who just parrots management and the players all the time, they need to be challenged. Even the stuff about Oden… he seems like a great guy and I’m glad he’s in Portland but he did go through a stage of frustrating surliness - Quick pointed it out, perhaps excessively so, but at least he wasn’t a mindless suck up.
That other guy should go to another market where they would appreciate his shtick. I have long debated whether to put together a fanpost that hones in on why he should leave this market, why I think his resume is massively exaggerated, etc… but I don’t like hating on people so I’ll leave it to someone else.
