B-Roy on KJR in 10

Brandon Roy will be on with Softy in 10 minutes. I'm sure they'll talk about extending his contract. If you're not in Seattle you can listen on kjram.com or I'm sure they'll podcast it. Update: I'm switching gyms to LA fitness

contract question now

Roy asked not to get into much detail about it asked what he can say:

Roy (paraphrased):
exciting, especially because 4 yrs ago on bench at UW. perspective, hard work ive put in. hard to put into word. lot of money, nice to know I can give my kids the advantages i didnt have. its tough, negotiation, sometime tings dont go you wan one day, better the next. be patient. i feel good, just have to wait and know that it will come

there’s days i feel good about it, other days where i feel like it might no happen. its 50/50 at this point. id love to get it over with and move forward, helping out with free agents and stuf.. but i have to trust my agents. its a business

not plaing any role right now in recruiting FAs, since i only have 1 year left. my foucs is on how to secure my future. would like to be more a part of recruiting guys, but can’t do that until our (me and LMA) situation isn’t close to getting done.

lots of typos, and incomplete

but was typing as he was talking, so did the best i could. think i got most of the big points. Tone was the thing you can’t paraphrase. it didn’t at all sound like he thought it was a done deal and they were just haggling over a minor point or two. The “50/50” comment really stuck out, though it was kind of said more in the vein of using a common term than in anything he had put serious thought into, so maybe not good to read too much into that.

Roy was not nearly as sure-sounding as KP about getting this done

no talk of “being a Blazer a long time”, etc. Wants to get it done, but sounds skeptical.

obviously, his agents don’t want him to come out and say “I just wnat to be a Blazer” for negotiating purposes, but still, it didn’t sound like it was that close.

hard not to read too much into it, but I didn’t like what i heard thus far. he certainly left the door open to a deal NOT getting done.

I'm still perplexed to what the hang up could be....

It sounds like they have differences. I mean, a 5-year Max contract shouldn’t be that difficult. Of course, Deron Williams also had some extension issues before he inked it. Once it’s over, no one will care about it again.

by blzrfan on Jul 10, 2009 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

the reported difference are that Roy wants 5 years, Blazers want to only do 4

seems stupid to me. most teams would WANT their franchise player locked up longer. but then again, they cold be counting on the fact that the next CBA could be less kind to players and thus his new contract would go down after 4 years, saving them money in the 5th year.

still – that’s insane. give him the 5th year already

I'm not reacting much.

It’s gonna be a temporary stall. Once it’s done, no one will care that we hit a bit of a snag. I’m fully confident this contract extension will be resolved very soon.

I'm hoping you're right

Of course, I almost always agree with you, blzrfan, but if the Blazers are in any way giving the Roy camp the impression that they’re not willing to pay out max length, max money, they’re being dolts.

As I said below, I think they have to wait for final word on next year’s cap before they can calculate a max deal. I hope that’s all it is and they’re not royally screwing this up.

by sagcat on Jul 10, 2009 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

max deals are signed without final calculations

placeholders are used, and language is inserted about the final numbers being dependant on what the number come in at next year. This is standard operating procedure on max extensions to rookie deals.

fair enough

that makes total sense.

In which case, the only thing holding it up should be how many appearances etc the team expects him to do. I know Brandon felt kind of burned out on that end of things his first two years.

Or something similar, like perks at hotels on the road. Whatever. But years and salary? Those should be obvious to both parties.

Who could blame Roy’s agent for saying “we want five year max deal?” He’s earned it! And we’d be fools not to.

by sagcat on Jul 10, 2009 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, this is completely opposite to all recent max extensions

LBJ, Wade, ’Melo, Deron, CPS – what did all these deals have in common:

The teams offered the max 5 years, the players demanded 4 years with an ETO after 3.

Here we have the opposite – the player actuall WANTS to sign the full 5 years, and we are balking. Unbelievable.

correct me if I'm wrong, but

don’t the Blazers reserve the right to match any contract offers Roy would receive next summer if he doesn’t have an extension? And what would the max be that other teams could offer him? The same max the Blazers would offer?

by JasonT on Jul 10, 2009 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

but it sends a bad message to let it get that far

by axel360 on Jul 10, 2009 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

but the worse case scenario for the Blazers is essentially offering a max contract a year later than now. Either way, Roy can’t go anywhere unless the Blazers don’t want to pay him.

Obviously, the alternative makes everyone feel better and would be preferable. But if Roy doesn’t sign in the next week, it doesn’t seem like the doomday scenario that many are portraying it to be.

As much flack as I give GM Kevin Pritchard, I feel this whole debacle falls squarely on the shoulders ...

of Vulcan Inc. Chairman Paul Allen. If Allen is being a stingy, penny-pinching tightwad by instructing some of his underlings (e.g., Vlucan Sports and Entertainment CEO Tod Leiweke) to force Trail Blazers middle management (i.e., the basketball operations department) into hardball negotiation tactics with Brandon Roy, then he’s a doltish imbecile.

I hope KP reads this:

If you don’t sign Brandon Roy to a 5 year contract and he walks, I’m never purchasing a season ticket package again, ever. You’ll be lucky to see me buy single game tickets. I seriously doubt this will happen, and I think Roy gets what he wants in the end, but this is just stupid. Come on now. Literally the only reason the Rose Garden is selling out right now is Brandon Roy. If it’s all a numbers game with $, try imagining this team w/o Roy. Whatever this team could possibly save by giving him a 4 year contract pales in comparison to what we will lose if he walks. It’s not even in the same universe.

Not signing Roy

would be just as bad as the Bowie pick. it would put us right back to where we were before we drafted roy 3 years ago. 21-61. and if roy walks, i doubt LA would want to stay

by axel360 on Jul 10, 2009 1:07 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It would be worst than the Bowie pick.

With the Bowie pick we didn’t know what we’d be losing passing in Jordan. In this instance we know sure well what we’d be losing if we lost Roy.

by tcwoods on Jul 10, 2009 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would argue worse

at least with not drafting Jordan we can say that it’s because we already had Drexler, Paxon (who was a all star the year before) and Kiki at the SF.

now it looks bad but there was no real way to know that Jordan would be MJ.

However not signing Roy is inexcusable.

BRoy recruiting might be a valuable tool. LeBron does it for the Cavs, Howard for the Magic, ...

Of course there is a lot of time left this summer, and even if no deal would get done Roy and LMA would be restricted next offseason once the Blazers make the QO. But it would look pretty bad to let it come that far and potentially create a Ben Gordon situation.

Right now KP can still argue he is focused on other things that are more urgent, but the way this offseason runs at least gets deductions for the artistic merit. It’s a bit lacking tact.

exactly…If the perception from BR is that it is not going well, what does it matter what KP and all say that it is going well?

Forgive me for sounding ignorant...

But who are the Vulcans??

Big D from Blog-A-Bull - "Pritchard is such a genius that teams just give him players for free."

Greg Oden - The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946

Vulcan, Inc. is Paul Allen's investment & management company

It’s the parent company. All of Paul’s businesses — the Blazers, Seahawks, Experience Music Project, real estate projects, etc. — are subsidiaries.

from my other fanpost:

if the signing period started 3 days ago, Roy’s max contract should have been signed sealed delivered 2 days 23hrs and 45min ago.

this is just a no-brainer. he IS the franchise. you do NOT jerk around your franchise player, not even for a few weeks. you just DON’T.

Roy texted Wheels and said...

that he is frustrated by the whole situation and that he is preparing a statement for next week.

KP get your head out of your butt and sign Roy for 5 freaking years. Not only could KP lose Roy, but he could lose a bunch of fans.

I know this has been said like...

1,459,985 times already, but what the heck are they thinking?!!
Did they honestly think that this was gonna turn out ok?

We have some witches to burn!

KP: “I’m not a witch”
Blazerbeliever: Tell me. What do you do with witches?
Bedger 1: Burn them.
Blazerbeliever: And what do you burn, apart from witches?
Bedger 1: More witches.
Bedger 2: Wood.
Blazerbeliever: Good. Now, why do witches burn?
Peasant 2: …because they’re made of… wood?
Blazerbeliever: Good. So how do you tell whether KP is made of wood?
Bedger 1: Build a bridge out of him.
Blazerbeliever: But can you not also build bridges out of stone?
Bedger 1: Oh yeah.
Blazerbeliever: Does wood sink in water?
Bedger 1: No, no, it floats!… It floats! Throw KP into the pond!
Blazerbeliever: No, no. What else floats in water?
Bedger 1: Bread.
Bedger 2: Apples.
Bedger 3: Very small rocks.
Bedger 1: Cider.
Bedger 2: Gravy.
Bedger 3: Cherries.
Bedger 1: Mud.
Bedger 2: Churches.
Bedger 3: Lead! Lead!
Brandon Roy: A Duck.
Blazerbeliever: …Exactly. So, logically…
Bedger 1: If she weighed the same as a duck… she’s made of wood.
Blazerbeliever: And therefore…
Bedger 2: …A witch!

Burn Him!!

I would guess that teh chances are higher than 50/50

and that Brandon says that because he knows that the fans will be on his side and make this a HUGE deal. so Roy is probably using us to get what he wants…

but to be honest Roy deserves it! and he should get what he wants.

C*mcast sucks!

This is a joke

KP, Vulcans, whoever is driving this bus, get it together now. All this talk of “loyalty, culture, etc.”, we’re not having that discussion woithout Brandon Roy. Any team in the league would be lucky to have this guy, and if the issue is the Blazers are hemming over giving him a 5th year, than this frnachise is run by a cabal of morons who somehow think aging small forwards carry more value than All Stars in thier primes.

That said, I don’t foresee any way Brandon Roy leaves – it would be franchise suicide. Still, the next time I hear KP using his favorite buzzwords for how magical everything he’s put together is, I’m going to remeber this little episode. The cake wasn’t the only lie…

Seriosu answer to your point

There’s nothing to negotiate here. Why tick off your best player when it isn’t necessary at all? And I’m not buying the LMA posturing argument others are advancing – it doesn’t seem like an adequate justification. Offer the max, if Roy wants to know about LMA simply tell him that it’s a different set of circumstances, and if Brandon has some input/reaction beyond that point fine, it’s on him there. But there is no reason to play pointless games like this wiht one of the best players in the league.

Is the sky falling/is Brandon leaving – no. But again, what purpose does all this posturing serve? If anything, it does give me more reason to worry about the front office’s ability to sign FAs – in the recent past we’ve denigrated a player we bid against ourselves for (not entirely undeservedly in D Miles case, but the point still stands), threatened litigation if somebody signed the guy (and in turn, hurt our cap space), and now we’re playing hardball with a top 10 player. If you had your choice of employers as a top FA, all things being equal, would you want to deal with Portland’s management right now? This will pass, but it doesn’t set a good tone for our relationship with Brandon or our perception as a destination spot for players.

KP in meltdown mode?

Why are the wheels suddenly starting to wobble? They havent come off yet, but we’ve definitely lost a lugnut or two. I mean a few things.

1) Roy and Aldridge should be signed. Brandon especially. He is our franchise. Period. Give the man his money, and reserve a space in the rafters for his number.
2) Bayless for a Hinrich/Blake PG combo? We’d mortgaging our future for a small short-term improvement
3) We, uh….kinda suck at free agency.

None of these things, taken alone, would mean much….but from a front office that has been rock solid for the past few years, it’s a bit disconcerting, especially coming off of a special year. Right now, we should be looking forward, not backwards, and instead of staring a our navels contemplating a few relatively minor (In the grand scheme of things. I would love to have Millsap, just FYI) upgrades in Hinrich or Millsap, we should be securing this team’s future as a title contender…and none of this points in that direction.

I like the Hinruch/Blake combo

that would be 48 minutes of steady PG production, every game. Championship-caliber. I’d like to keep Bayless, too. But if it takes Jerryd going to break up this front office inertia, have a good time in Chicago, JB!

I’m wondering if KP will finally take action now that the ____ is about to hit the fan. There’s nothing like making a big splash to divert the fan’s attention and get them back on “your” side.

Next week is going to be a tipping point in Blazer history. The Blazers will be down at summer league and the focus will definitely not be on the summer league games! I hop KP is prepared to “deal with it” Maybe he left PDX at jussst the right time?

When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

No way roy leaves

everyone is overreacting. He is the cornerstone of this franchise and everyone knows it from the fans to the management. He’ll get his money, but I don’t see anything wrong with having negotiations between the team and his agent. Im really not that worried, Broy will be in a blazers jersey for a long time to come

I'm confident he will get re-signed, but come on. It pisses me off that this is even an issue. Pay the man.

If Hell really does freeze over, KP screws this up, and Brandon leaves, I will never be a blazer fan again.
