Why Rudy>>>Hedo

  1. He's cheaper.
  2. He's younger.
  3. He shoots the 3 at a higher %.
  4. He is better off the ball.
  5. He plays with more heart than anyone.

Yeah, I want to hear it from Rudy himself first.

J quick says a lot of things.

i don’t care if Rudy is mad or not. It still holds true. Where did we play Rudy this year when Roy was in the game? What do you think the impact on his minutes/touches is with Hedo in the lineup? I wouldn’t blame Rudy for being pissed-I would be in his situation.

The facts are he flourished as a rookie with limited PT and limited offensive play-running. He is WAY better than that but was paying his dues and not complaining. Now we’re going to sign a has-been diva to a bloated contract to play ahead of him AND batum?

If anything being reported is a load of BS, I pray that its Portland’s interest in Hedo.

I would have listed more than 5 things btw--there are plenty more--but I didn't know how to extend the list.

A lot of people.

I don’t exactly see a lot of “passion” from Rudy when he’s playing defense.

by Nick Van Excellent on Jul 1, 2009 7:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Rudy isn't going anywhere. Hedo can bite the wall. No one is paying him 50 million. He can

go to Toronto if it’s all about money. He can take a reasonable offer from Portland if he is about winning. 3 years/ 27 million

by BRoyInThe4th on Jul 1, 2009 6:41 PM PDT reply actions

Toronto is rumored to have lost interested in running for Hedo.

Everything is all speculation but that leaves us. I don’t want Hedo.

by dpnim on Jul 1, 2009 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

too bad a highlight dunk every other month doesn't equate to wins

Hedo may not be the answer, but the Blazers can’t go another year getting nothing from the starting SF all season (unless the goal is to lose in the first round while players develop, which is fine, but apparently not the plan). The only reason Batum even played last year was because Webster went down and Outlaw had to come off the bench, so they had no choice but to start Batum, but Portland is going nowhere until they get a SF who can hit an open jumper consistently. This is why Portland started slowly so often, especially on the road; they had a starting five with only two above average offensive players.

Nate finally figured this out in Game 6 against Houston, but unfortunately Rudy decided to take that game off so it didn’t work, but I would have started Rudy that entire series.

by explicator on Jul 1, 2009 7:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll give you the first three...

But seriously, “better off the ball”? Running around like a madman is not all that impressive to me, and while Hedo’s shooting stats aren’t the greatest, I think he’s a unique player with a skillset that causes more problems for opponents than Rudy does.

I’m as big a Batum fan as anyone, and don’t understand why we need to trade for another 3, but Hedo’s got game.

by levelhed on Jul 1, 2009 7:20 PM PDT reply actions

you should try running around like that during a basketball game.

it’s a lot more effective than you think.

"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.

"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

that is one way to spin it, but...

I am not a huge Hedo fan, but your list could be better and can be argued against:

1. Rudy is cheaper because he is not as good as Hedo, so I don’t get your point. I grant you that Rudy is better than his current rookie scale salary, but he will never be making the money Hedo is about to sign for, because Rudy cannot create his own shot, and that is what separates the superstars from the role players, and players like CP3 and Tony Parker from the Steve Blakes. The league is full of Tracy Murray’s and Rex Chapman’s who can hit from halfcourt when wide-open, but they need someone else to do all the heavy lifting before passing to them. Of course, all of you will disagree with that, and you are the same people who think Steve Blake should not be traded.
2. This is true.
3. True, but if you look closer, the difference is minimal. Rudy averaged a shade under 2-5 3-point FGs per game last year, while Hedo was 1.7-4.9, a difference of about 24 3-pointers in an 82 game season, or one extra three every third game. Big deal.
4. This is subjective, and I am not sure how you are measuring this, especially considering you have probably watched five games of Hedo in his entire career, but what does it mean in wins and losses? Rudy running around screens for 15 seconds means he is better off the ball when the end result is still a fadeaway 3? This is because he can’t dribble and create his own shot. Hedo can, so if the point is to score each possession, who cares what you can do off the ball, especially in an offense in which Roy is going to penetrate and dish. Based on your logic, because Rudy is better than Roy off the ball, Rudy is better than Roy?
5. Also subjective, and thus irrelevant. Rudy has passion because he does what- screams after a 3 and pumps his fist? So Roy or LMA are disinterested if they score and just run back on defense? Facial expressions and showboating don’t equate to more talent and skill.

I am not sure Hedo is the answer, if KP thinks he is, then I trust him more than you guys.

by explicator on Jul 1, 2009 7:32 PM PDT reply actions   2 recs

Yep.

I feel the same way. Creating our own shot changes everything.

Rudy is assisted on 80% of his jumpshots

Turkoglu is assisted on 47% of his jumpshots.

Batum can sit in the corner and hit open three’s but it doesn’t mean he’s a better shooter than Kobe, even though his % is technically better.

by Nick Van Excellent on Jul 1, 2009 7:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Rudy just played his first year in the NBA. go look at Hedo during his first few years in the NBA.

The difference between their shooting is much bigger, i would imagine, if you took into acount the % of possessions that said player handles the ball. And pace. The Blazers aren’t exactly the 7-seconds or less Suns. So Rudy is scoring more threes while (by my impressions) handling the ball much less, and playing in a very slow methodical offense.

On point 4: rudy running around those screens by Oden/Przybilla tire out the defenders and often disrupt the defense. You have to be kidding when you say its not useful. It was Detroits bread and butter with Rip Hamilton. I didn’t say that was the defining point that made him a better player or that rudy is a better player than hedo straight up contracts/age aside but you can’t compare like that. look at the package. he is younger, cheaper, and a better use of the limited cap space you get in the NBA. He also has a longer future and more room to improve. THAT—combined with the other points—makes Rudy the better play for the Blazers.

who said I don't think Blake should be traded? I find it ironic that you insinuate that I don't watch Hedo considering I live 3 hours from Orlando

and you pigeon-hole Rudy into a 1 dimensional 3point shooter and put him next to Rex Chapman based off 25 mpg x 1 season.

Please, for the love of all that is holy, please stop using the following: "Book it.", "FTW", "Epic" & "Fail".

Rudy is 24.

I would be very surprised if he suddenly learned how to create offense off the dribble and defend.

Not that it couldn’t happen, but it seems unlikely.

by Nick Van Excellent on Jul 1, 2009 8:15 PM PDT up reply actions

He created off the dribble in Spain

He said that is something he was going to do more of next year. So I will wait and see on this point.

Hedo is a year away..

From being completely worthless…

Turk is a slug, that any NBA Forward or Guard can blow by with ease.
He is lazy at heart, and will be fat and injured in a year. (does not take care of his body)
Mark my words…As soon as he gets his next contract, its all down hill.
